The Great Carp Escape by Irish Beth Maddock - With a Dash of "Where's Waldo!" An Original Inspirational Fish Tale!

An Allegory based on a true story...Beside a house on a large lake, blue-green waves gentle lapped against the shoreline. This was where Beth and her little brother Paul lives. They would play on the sandy beach for hours. When the sun came out, they would swim in the fresh water and splash each other. The warm days of summer were the children's favorite time of year. Paul would take a stick and dig in the wet sand to look for lake clams. Wearing a scuba mask and snorkel, Beth would lie still in the shallow water. If she didn't move, tiny fish called minnows would swim right up to her nose!

The only place the children did not go was near the swampy reeds. Here the weeping willow dipped its long, leafy branches into the lake. If Beth and Paul weren't careful, their feet would get stuck in the mud. But that was not the only reason the children avoided the reeds. Once, while walking along the beach with their dad, Paul found a dead fish on the shoreline. "Ewww!" cried Beth. "Daddy, look! That's the ugliest fish I've ever seen!" Paul poked it with a stick...

The Great Carp Escape

Written by Irish Beth Maddock
Illustrated by Lucent Ouano

I wasn't surprised that this children's book is based upon a true story--one that any family who lives by water... and cares...would do. That is, to set out to save some trapped fish! The story is about a family, with a young boy and girl, together with their parents who live beside a large lake. And have the opportunity to enjoy living with nature day after day and learn about God's creatures! And, while you are reading their story, a special friend of theirs, I named after Waldo, who can be found on almost every single page of the book, so you can play "find Waldo" as you read! There he is on the corner of the front cover!

The book itself is lovely with 24 full-color pictures on 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 high-quality paper. It is an excellent opportunity to teach children about our role in helping to save and protect God's wonderful creatures, even if all of them are not quite so beautiful to look at... and especially if  they get themselves in trouble through no fault of their own...

I appreciated the opportunity to read this paperbook and provide my personal thoughts on the story... you may want to consider it for the upcoming
holidays...

Stella Comes to Tell Children and Adults About Her Trip To Spain!

"My name is Stella. I’m a Cocker Spaniel and I love to play. I wagged my tail and looked at her with sad eyes hoping that she would take me out. “Do you want to go out, Stella?” asked my master. “Bark, bark, bark,” yes please. I responded wagging my tail frantically. “Ok then, let’s go! I was finally outside running after Vilma. She didn’t notice me so I decided to call out to her. “Bark, bark, bark!” Vilma wait for me, I said to her. She turned around and wagged her tail as she saw me running towards her. “Hi Vilma,” I said. Vilma was female like me. She had white fur with a few tan coloured spots on her chest. She had lovely brown eyes. “Hi Stella,” she said. “Hey, do you like my new collar?” Vilma asked me. It was a pink collar with sparkly white stones. “It’s beautiful!” I said. “Oh, I hear my master calling me. I have to go but let’s try to meet again later.” “Ok, I’ll see you later,” said Vilma. My master took me for a walk in the park near our house. The park was full of birds and it was a good place to meet friends..."

¡Hola! ¡Stella!

 (Stella - Lovable

Cocker Spaniel Travels)

By G. R. Calcagni

Is your dog an important part of your family? Do your children love having him or her around--perhaps even to travel with you? Then you just might want them to meet Stella!

When Stella was old enough to start traveling with the family, she decided to write books to share with other children and, hopefully, their own friends! Stella lives in Italy, but their first trip will take them to Spain! She's so excited to be able to tell you about her trip! Oh yes, first... Hola, Stella!

Hi! I'm so happy to visit! I travel with my Master, the pack leader and two pups! These animals walk on just two legs so they are much taller than me, but they always want me close! Especially when we travel... Please be sure you always stay close to your family when you are outside too!

And would you believe we go in a moving house! Yes, the pack leader does what is called driving and my master sits in the navigator seat(? - I'm not sure what that means 'cause most of the time she just sits there and sometimes lets me sit on her lap!)

Once we got there, the pups pulled out a lot of cloth and strings and stuff and I was amazed to see what happened to it! Pretty Soon, there was a little house, called a tent, and we went in to take a nap!

The older puppy was telling the younger one what to do. “Ali, pull the sheet so that we open it up and lay it flat on the ground,” she said. “Ok, now extend one of the sticks so that we can slide it through one of the slits in the sheet,” she continued.
I watched as they extended all three sticks and then slid them through the first sheet. “Ok, now we need to each take one end of each stick and place it in the ring at the edge of the sheet,” she explained. Soon they had the ends of each of the three sticks inserted into the rings. The tent was up. I went closer to get a better look.
“Stella, watch out. We’re not finished yet,” said the older puppy. I sat and continued to watch them. They took some of the metal pegs and with another tool they called hammer, they hit the metals peg into the ground. Then they opened the second sheet and placed it on top of the tent. This sheet had strings attached which they pulled and fastened to the ground with more metal pegs. They stood back and looked. “That wasn’t too bad,” said Megan.
The tent was long and tall. Meg grabbed an end of the tent and opened the mouth. She stepped inside. Ali then stepped inside and I followed. Wow! It was big inside. Meg, who was a tall puppy, could stand inside. She went to one side and opened the mouth which lead to another room. “Ali, now we need to get the mattresses and inflate them,” Meg said. Ali went outside and I followed her to see what this mattress was. Ali walked back to the big white box and pulled out two boxes and another strange looking stick. She took these back to the tent and they pulled out from each box other sheets. They then connected the stick to a little hole on each sheet. Then as they held the stick upright, they kept it from moving with their feet and pulled the stick up. Then they pushed it down.
Then they pushed it up again and then down. They did this several times and all of a sudden the sheet was taking another form. It was growing. I couldn’t explain what was happening but the sheet became bigger and bigger. It was almost as tall as me!
When they finished with the first sheet they did the same with the second sheet. Then they each took one of these mattresses and brought them into the tent. “Ah, now we can relax,” Meg said laughing as she and Ali threw themselves down on these sheets. I moved closer and as I was within reach of Ali, she grabbed me and said, “Amore, come and try Ali’s bed.” Soon they were fast asleep. I closed my eyes and listened to the noises outside.
~~~
We were now in Barcellona at a
 place called La Rambla and
 there were so many strange
and wonderful smells! And I even
got to eat some of them!
Anyway, off we went! I have a lot of friends who I talk about in my book; but this time I have too much to tell you about where we went and, oh, my, was I scared one time when I heard barking but all I could see was a great big box! It was spooky! A lot of animals around me were laughing like they do, but, I did not feel like laughing, I can tell you!
That was probably one of the highlights of my trip, 'cause you know it's fun to be scared, especially when you're with your family!
There are so many other things I was setting along with my family that I had never seen before. Some were so big that I couldn't even see the whole thing...like La Sagrada Familia. My master and her pups would go inside some of these places while the pack leader stay outside with me. I guess he wanted them to see the most stuff and wanted them to enjoy what they called a vacation...
And it was really great fun...but, honestly, I was quite glad to be home again...
But don't forget that I've told you alllllllll about our trip--practically every little thing we did, including how the pups washed dishes after we ate!
So, I'm so happy to have the opportunity to visit here at Book Reader's Heaven. I hope you liked my stories enough to want to know more, 'cause we'll be traveling again soon!
Oh, yes, I'm supposed to tell you that my book is BRH recommended for children and their families too!
Alert! Start Playing Beethoven ASAP To Keep Seirens Calm...
I just had to give you some type of warning! My computer started slowing down as soon as I started to read this book...I just know that it's been taken over because "they" don't want you to know about what's happened in Orphea! I learned from reading it, though, that if you play Grosse Fuge by the great master Beethoven, that the seirens can be subdued...at least long enough to read my review!   ...I hope...
Fortunately, for me, I've been a fan of classical and most other types of music as far back as I remember but classical is still there at the top when I thing of music genres... Warren L. Woodruff, however, has seen the evolution of our music as the young are pulled in to dark, loud, angry shouting and screaming, that has deaden the beauty and joy that great music can bring. And brought us Dr. Fuddle...
And so it was in Orphea, the land of music and beauty, that loud, weird music was being played and the land was starting to die...
Children were being taken and were led into a land where everything beautiful was gone, and watched by creatures called Seirens--picture big cats with wings... The land was being taken over, led by Jedermann, who had stolen  the Gold Baton!
"Dr. Fuddle instructed Antonio to beat a measure
of three counts in preparation and they began to
play. By the third measure both creatures were
purring.
"Now it's time to bring out one of the fiercest
examples of counterpoint every conceived," Dr.
Fuddle said, placing another musical score onto
the stands. "This is called the Grosse Fugue
by Beethoven from his string Quartet in B-flat
Major."
"
Brace yourselves," Einstein said.
Dr. Fuddle motioned for Kathy to play her
viola and Leonard his cello. Then he brought
two other string players, with violins to join
them.
The moment Christina stepped forward to watch,
the creatures began to shriek.
"Ready?" Dr. Fuddle said. "Play!"
That baton was now as black as Jefermann and all his seirens...
Now he was looking to steal ancient magical instruments that were being held...for the messengers! There had been a prophecy that Messengers of Music would come.
One day, Tyler Harrington decided to investigate an old, supposedly haunted, house near his home. He had always been warned by his mother to stay away before she died. But now, he was twelve and thinking that he was old enough now to explore, beginning by looking into a window.
Amazingly, Dr. Fuddle was sitting and playing a grand piano! Of course, Tyler didn't know who he was at the time, for he was so shocked that he ran... But he called a friend, who called two other friends, and Tyler took his sister, so that five children entered that old house that day...
And wound up choosing to enter the gold door...
Each had a talent that came along with one of those special musical instruments...
But there was magic and all things evil working against them to prevent them from helping to bring the joy of music back...
With a taste of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," "Harry Potter", and another much older story that has been shared over and over in many different ways of one who brought the spirit to fight evil, Warren L. Woodruff has given us the world where musicians live forever!
Meet Beethoven, Liszt, Mozart, et. al., plus all of the thousands of others who have played beautiful music that brings us joy and laughter--beauty and happiness. This literary musical masterpiece is a delightful way to introduce great music to our children and all those older...
And check online material to continue sharing that music! This is a brilliant masterpiece written by a man sharing his love in both word and his programs... And, by the way, you don't have to have a musical background to enjoy this... You might have to deal with Jederman and his seirens, though, a little longer... If you still hear them coming, I encourage you to play Beethoven's Choral Fantasy because Dr. Fuddle  is "proud to say with utter assurance to everyone within the sound of my voice: the light of harmony has destroyed our enemy."  Hey! Celebrate! Celebrate...Listen to the Music!
Turning Back to Yesterdays...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Gang
A King in a Court of Fools
By Larry Enright
Do you remember "Our Gang"? Or maybe you are a fan of  "A Christmas Story" and, like my sister, watch it over and over every year? Yes, I'm one of those individuals who believe that the past was a happier, more friendly time.  We weren't afraid to go off on our own to explore the surrounding neighborhood or the woods nearby. Even better, our parents thought nothing of allowing us to go!
Larry Enright has done an amazing job in capturing all those early moments for us to remember as he introduces the Caswell Gang to us. Interestingly, he presents the story from the youngest member of the Gang:
"...That leaves you with me to piece this together. You have to keep in mind that I was only in first grade at the time, so my reading skills were limited. Simple chapter books were easy, but not six grade Tom-ese...How did we get our hands on Tom's secret journal?..."
Of course most of the group are siblings, with the oldest boy the leader; but it is apparent that, just as we remember it, our friends were just like family members and we cherished that bond. If you are a Baby Boomer, you will find yourself remembering. Another plus for me was that the setting is nearby Pittsburgh, where memories of the steel mills as we traveled still are clear in my mind.
If you are younger and have at least once heard, "Oh, the good ole days..." and never quite believed it...then I highly recommend you consider this story. It pulls you in and I read it in a day, while spending a little time remembering as well!
Enright certainly has a wonderful memory...or maybe we all would if we stopped to remember more about our early life. Curiously, you wonder how much is fiction or how much is from his own story. Perhaps that is not important, because it is so well written that you think he might have been keeping a journal, as is included in the story...and just pulled that journal out one day and molded it into a novel...Realistic and memorably full of yesterdays...I thoroughly enjoyed the day he provided.
And, in addition, a mystery is even included! And just as the characters did, I pictured being Nancy Drew or working with the Hardy Boys to solve the mystery surrounding "The Pink Lady" whose car the Gang found in the woods, together with the clothes and even the wallet of the owner. What had happened to her? The Caswell Gang is on the trail--but then the car is gone! But that doesn't stop them. In fact, it gets them further into action, meeting and making friends with a veteran neighbor and stopping to help him with the chores that he could no longer handle himself...
But they persist until the crime has been totally solved!
This is a wonderful book for children--but I have to say that many adults will be the ones that truly will be thankful for the time spent enjoying their youth once again...I loved it!
Acclaimed Author Geraldine McCaughrean Provides Another Winner!
Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and Becky Thatch...Image via WikipediaThe Glorious Adventures of the
Sunshine Queen
Geraldine McCaughrean
Reminiscent of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, the children you'll meet in Sunshine Queen are just as curious, brave and adventurous. But in the Sunshine Queen, you'll also get to meet quite a number of similar adults as well! In fact, you'll meet the entire tour group of singers, dancers, a dog act...even a preacher that ultimately made up Bright Lights!
When diphtheria spread through their hometown, Cissy Sissney, Kookie and Tibbie Boden, were sent out of town to ensure their good health. Chaperoned my Miss May March, they were on their way to stay with their former teacher who was now part of the Bright Lights. Cissy parents had met with some very unnatural trouble, so there really was no choice in her relocation. Tibbie who had planned on staying with Cissy, of course, now had to go and Kookie refused to be left behind!
The Glorious Adventures of the Sunshine Queen
Starting out with little direction, they finally arrived in Salvation, at the temporary home of  Miss Loucien, now married and with her family--on a large paddle steamer that had gone through a flood and stranded in a field. They had already faced the first hurdle--finding that Mr. Curlitz (Curly) one of the actors had been imprisoned for profanity. He had been quoting from Shakespeare...
Miss March had had just about enough. Here's what happened:
"Miss May March had harangued the shieriff of Salvation so hard that he had shortened Curly's sentence by four days and released him, just to get her off his doorstep. On and on she had raged about 'sacred English literature,' 'small-minded, small-town busybodies,' and 'wilful ignorance.' Even Curly had been unable to poke a quotation in edgeways. As a result he was on his way home to the bosom of the Bright Lights Theater Company."
And all the adventure that was to come!
Soon, rain poured into that place and the large boat started to move. They quickly started worrying about the fact that the boat had been snagged and would be open for the water to pour in. And as they searched, that's when they saw the alligator... who turned out to be a man, the engineer...and so much more...
As the boat was now moving, thought quickly turned to "what about having a floating theatre?" Plans moved quickly and auditions began. The three children were doing the hiring. Miss Loucien declared that if the children liked the acts, then everybody would! And after so much damage from high waters, the people on the river needed them:
"What the Sunshine Queen delivered to the neighborhood was the possibility of being happy again--not just dry or back to normal, but happy with the prospect of something coming around the river bend better than a flash flood..."
I thoroughly enjoyed all of the unique characters, but especially enjoyed the thinking of the preacher who carried a gun. For not everybody was happy to see that group of strangers. "They'll be back presently," said Elder Slater grimly. "Sure as the Four Horsemen of the Appollyclips. Fulla death and pestilence." McCaughrean successfully takes readers back into the period with adventures, concerns, and problems that were prevalent at that time. Then she adds the flavor of the circus, the theatre, a showboat, and the life along the river to arrive at a totally entertaining package of delight, wit and excitement. High recommended for children and adults alike!
