Fallingwater: A Love Story by David Taylor Spotlights One of Most Memorable Historical Locations For Me...

“Who designed this house?” Annie asked Danielle.
 “I don’t know and I don’t care. Why don’t
 you ask them?” she replied as she looked
at her parents.
~~~
I wanted to read this book as soon as I saw the title... My first view of Fallingwater was a series of framed pictures that my aunt had when I was still young. I fell in love with the structure and how the building had been built within its wooded environment. I have since visited a number of times and became even more enamored. Of course, this was after the home was opened for tours and was totally empty. So this story brought me into the time period when it was used as a residence and I enjoyed finding some pictures. Until reading Fallingwater: A Love Story, I had been enthralled with the exterior and remember quite well the magical effect of the building interface with the flowing water... Now I enjoyed seeing some of it as it was when lived in...
When Damian arrived at the extraordinary beautiful waterfall house, the first thought that came to his mind was that Fallingwater was the eighth wonder of the world. Perched on a rock on top of a gushing waterfall, the cantilevered home seemed to defy gravity above the flowing water. Fallingwater was located ninety minutes south of Pittsburgh in the idyllic Laurel highlands. The abode consisted of two parts: the main house and the guest house.
Damian saw a picture of the house when it was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in January of 1938. He was fascinated by the structure and learned that the house was owned by his friend Edgar Kaufmann. He called Edgar and asked him why he didn’t tell him about the house. Though Damian was nineteen years younger than him; they shared most of the same interests. They talked about everything; women, cars, art, and music and this was the first project he was doing he kept away from him. Edgar explained that he wanted to keep it as a surprise and nine years later, Damian and his family were walking on the soil of Fallingwater. Damian was a middle aged hotelier and his wife, Ingrid, was an opera singer. He owned a bohemian hotel in Greenwich Village, five blocks from their apartment. He was sincere and outgoing, and around town, his acquaintances knew that he was deeply proud of the fact he had raised his daughter, Danielle, all by himself while his wife’s golden voice was conquering the hearts of thousands in Paris.
What is the name of that song?” he asked.
“Habanera, from Carmen.”
 “And what is the name of the song you sang on the first day?”
 “Un bel di Vedremo, it means ‘one good day, we will see’.”
 “Why don’t you sing that song?”
 The words of that song were so light and pleasant, but deep, however when she thought about the message of hope it spoke of, she could see herself in common with the heroine of the song. She opened her mouth and rose her voice and as she sang he remembered the oath he took on her leaving him again. Amid this moment of beauty, the thought of killing his wife was battling to take full control of his mind and heart.
Fallingwater:
A Love Story
By David Taylor
Reading a book such as Fallingwater is heartbreaking for me. It has spurts of brilliant writing, but it is so totally in need of a complete line edit that most readers will soon become discouraged. From a purely formatting standpoint, the lack of scene breaks is catastrophic in trying to easily follow the story...that, together with the many small proofreading omissions that were not caught makes it even sadder. But the major lack of editing results in an inconsistency in writing that is totally unacceptable to allow a recommendation of the book. Mainly, this is due to the "soap opera" style of writing that results in stilted characters that have not been fully developed to be believable, nor is the story itself, except if you are looking for the melodrama winner of the year...
Basically, the story is that Damian was relegated to the role of parent so that his wife, Ingrid, could tour the world and sing. Their daughter, Danielle, wants nothing to do with her mother, having never felt that she cared enough about her to spend time with her...
“My mother? Are you insane? How many times
do I tell you that this woman is not my mother?
 I’m my own mother. Where was she
when I needed her? Oh, she was in Paris—
sleeping around with every Frenchman she set
her eyes to.”
 Ingrid cast her gaze upon the floor. Damian
 could see that her joy was cut short by her
 daughter’s rudeness. From the expression on
 her face, she felt helpless.
He knew that Ingrid wanted Danielle in her
life more than anything. Realizing that his
wife was hurt, he toyed with her hair and said,
 “Don’t worry, my love. She will get along with
 you with time.”
“I hope so. I’m determined to win her
affection.  I will not rest until I succeed.”
~~~

Ingrid glanced at her daughter and said,
 “Isn’t this house the loveliest thing
you’ve ever seen?”
 “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
Feeling vexed, Ingrid quickly hid her
 disappointment with a weak smile.
“I’m glad that my daughter is
 a wise young woman,” she said as
 she tenderly placed her hand on Danielle’s
 shoulder. Danielle rolled her eyes
and took her mother’s hand
 off her shoulder. Danielle neither liked nor
 respected her mother, who she had
barely known while growing up.
Ingrid had finally decided to
settle down with her family after her
voice had deteriorated and no
opera houses would hire her.
Damian welcomed her with open arms,
but, the same thing could not be
said about Danielle;
even though Ingrid had given her
 all the attention a mother could
 give to her child.
~~~
Now Danielle was having none of the attempts to reunite with her mother and act as if she'd been there for her. Ingrid's voice had been affected by its long use and she's come home, wanting to take her place as mother and wife... Damian happily tried to help pull the family back together and asks his friend to share Fallingwater for their reunion... {and I was thrilled to see the living room as it was then...}
There was constant friction...until a man shows up...and Danielle immediately falls in love with him and he with her...The man was a good friend of her father's...and an old enemy of her mother's! The soap opera melodrama
begins...
She started humming a song that she used to sing years ago when she was alone in her room, hoping for the return of her mother. The song’s name was ‘Caruso’ by the Italian singer Lucio Dalla. Her voice wasn’t perfect and her Italian was basic. She had learned a little bit of Italian from her best friend Claudia, because she was Italian American. She was aware of the dual imperfections at her attempt to sing the difficult song, but she didn’t really care. All that mattered was the wonderful experience she obtained from singing the song. The powerful ballad always brought comfort to her heart and helped her to be less afraid of the future...
~~~

“HELP, HELP, HELP!” She screamed even though she knew that she might be the only person in the woods. She tripped over a rock and fell right next to a large tree. Closing her eyes, she housed her head with her hands, waiting for her end. A horrible feeling replaced the fear and suspense in her heart. It was a foreign feeling. She was afraid of dying. Then suddenly, she heard the cry of one of the coyotes. It was a panting cry. She moved her hands and slowly opened her eyes. She saw a man standing in the middle of the coyotes, menacing them with his rifle. He was around the same age as her father. The wild animals were intimidated by the man’s imposing figure, but still, they were determined to bring down their enemy.

Please note that I picked this up as a free book...I did see the book on Amazon with a wide range of reviews...a number referring to the same issues I have noted above. As of this morning I was no longer able to access the book there. Make your own conclusions...I have no answers...

But I did want to share my love for Fallingwater and the famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, with my readers. I hope this provides you with an example of what Amazon is working on to deal with all the free books that are floating around... Be careful...

Guest Blogger Cindy McDonald... Thoroughbreds...My Backdrop!

THOROUGHBREDS: MY BACKDROP

Over the past twenty years or so, my life has been marinated in horses. I live near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on a forty-five acre Thoroughbred farm. My daughters and I spend many years showing horses on the Quarter Horse circuit, traveling all summer long from one horse show to the next, including the All American Quarter Horse Congress that is held each year in the fall in Columbus, Ohio.

My husband feeds his hobby by racing our Thoroughbreds at Mountaineer Racetrack and Presque Isle Downs. Ahhh, the backside of a racetrack—now that’s where you will find a collection of characters that is an author’s dream! It is a lifestyle that few witness and even fewer understand.

Charlatan and Salty Silver Sally
The backside (the stable area) is a community. Believe me, everyone knows everyone’s business and if you’re a newbie, it won’t be long until they know everything about you—they make it their business. The people of the backside are always waiting for that one special horse that will send them over the top to some fantasy of fortunes that is always one length, or one race beyond their reach. Likewise, there are those who have the means and the horses that keep them head and shoulders above the rest, putting them on a higher social ladder than those who do not. However, the two groups meet on a nightly basis at the starting gate, and that is where it becomes Unbridled.

Fly Maggie - Fav racer
 My husband and I don’t make our living with the horses. They are a hobby, a habit, an addiction—whatever you’d like to call it. That said I’ve spent a lot of time on the backside with the exercise riders, jockeys, and fellow trainers. I’ve watched them diligently for years. The deals, the lies, the scandals, and yes the drugs. My husband calls those who use the drugs “cheaters” and rightly so. Some of the cheaters are more cunning than others.

Granddaughter Kiersten and George

George is the inspiration for the children's book
that is will release this spring George the Boss--
I will be writing this children's series under the pen
--CS McDonald

Magnum will be appearing at the
All American Youth Show in Columbus,
OH in May--and at the World Champion
Palomino show in Missouri in July--
isn't he gorgeous!
In 2005 I sat down at my computer and began writing a TV drama call Unbridled. I wanted to bring this lifestyle to the forefront because there was nothing on television quite like it. But I knew that horses and horse racing was a mystery to most of the public. People may not be interested in watching something that they know nothing about. So what is it that television viewers know all about? You got it--murder, suspense, and relationships.

So with the racetrack and a beautiful sprawling Thoroughbred farm called Westwood as my backdrop, the Unbridled scripts took form.

I created a family known as the Wests who were the proprietors of Westwood. The Wests are wealthy, but they are fair and decent people. I was tired of the shows where there were no redeeming qualities in the characters. No, this ain’t Little House on the Prairie folks, and my characters are far from perfect, but at the end of each show there was a message.

Hokay, it was a bust, but the book series has picked up where the TV show left off: Each of the Unbridled books feature graceful Thoroughbreds—they are not always the main part of the story, but they are always ever present. And yes, some of the situations that the characters get into are actual events that we have experienced at the racetrack—greatly exaggerated upon of course. For example, I’ve never been murdered.

The first book of the Unbridled Series, DEADLY.COM introduces the West family, and the farm, and the fact that online romances can be a real killer!

DANGEROUS DECEPTION is about betrayal. An aged jockey is asked to take an easier position at Westwood. He becomes enraged and entangled in a kidnapping scheme that turns deadly. This book features a secondary storyline with a Quarter Horse rather than a Thoroughbred.

AGAINST the ROPES features the West’s good-hearted farm manager, Punch. When Punch helps a down-on-his-luck fighter, he begins to question his good intentions, especially when the fighter puts the people that Punch loves against the ropes, and at the very edge of disaster.

And the latest installment, SHADY DEALS—the Unbridled readers finally get to see Holden’s and Kate’s relationship blossom into…into…what else? A hot romance that becomes shaded by lies and murder!
So there you have it, a book series filled with murder, suspense, relationships, and graceful Thoroughbreds as they dash hell-bent-for-leather across the finish line—hey, what else could you ask for?
Twiggams and her foal!

Turning Back to Yesterdays...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Gang
A King in a Court of Fools

By Larry Enright

Do you remember "Our Gang"? Or maybe you are a fan of  "A Christmas Story" and, like my sister, watch it over and over every year? Yes, I'm one of those individuals who believe that the past was a happier, more friendly time.  We weren't afraid to go off on our own to explore the surrounding neighborhood or the woods nearby. Even better, our parents thought nothing of allowing us to go!

Larry Enright has done an amazing job in capturing all those early moments for us to remember as he introduces the Caswell Gang to us. Interestingly, he presents the story from the youngest member of the Gang:
"...That leaves you with me to piece this together. You have to keep in mind that I was only in first grade at the time, so my reading skills were limited. Simple chapter books were easy, but not six grade Tom-ese...How did we get our hands on Tom's secret journal?..."
Of course most of the group are siblings, with the oldest boy the leader; but it is apparent that, just as we remember it, our friends were just like family members and we cherished that bond. If you are a Baby Boomer, you will find yourself remembering. Another plus for me was that the setting is nearby Pittsburgh, where memories of the steel mills as we traveled still are clear in my mind.

If you are younger and have at least once heard, "Oh, the good ole days..." and never quite believed it...then I highly recommend you consider this story. It pulls you in and I read it in a day, while spending a little time remembering as well!

Enright certainly has a wonderful memory...or maybe we all would if we stopped to remember more about our early life. Curiously, you wonder how much is fiction or how much is from his own story. Perhaps that is not important, because it is so well written that you think he might have been keeping a journal, as is included in the story...and just pulled that journal out one day and molded it into a novel...Realistic and memorably full of yesterdays...I thoroughly enjoyed the day he provided.

And, in addition, a mystery is even included! And just as the characters did, I pictured being Nancy Drew or working with the Hardy Boys to solve the mystery surrounding "The Pink Lady" whose car the Gang found in the woods, together with the clothes and even the wallet of the owner. What had happened to her? The Caswell Gang is on the trail--but then the car is gone! But that doesn't stop them. In fact, it gets them further into action, meeting and making friends with a veteran neighbor and stopping to help him with the chores that he could no longer handle himself...

But they persist until the crime has been totally solved!

This is a wonderful book for children--but I have to say that many adults will be the ones that truly will be thankful for the time spent enjoying their youth once again...I loved it!

Lovin' Doo Wop...with Little Anthony and the Imperials

NEW YORK - OCTOBER 29: Little Anthony and the...Image by Getty Images via @daylife

Doo Wop!

Perhaps every generation best loves the music that was popular during their teens and early 20s...at least it is true for me... Every once in awhile a Doo Wop program comes on WQED, Pittsburgh and I find it happening, while flipping through the channels... I rarely plan to watch certain programs since I don't like to "plan" too many things as I've gotten older.

I caught a little of the program publicizing the October 8th Benedum Center program in Pittsburgh, starring Little Anthony and the Imperials as well as several other acts, including The Coasters. Traveling these days, especially at night, is not something I consider much, due to my concern about driving at night in areas where I don't know where I'm going and have to consider night vision issues...

But I'm quite content watching and listening on Television! And I love watching the performers from my early life, still performing, either for special events, or, some of them, still giving ongoing performances. This group is still very active - Check out their web site!

Little Anthony is someone special, don't you think? I sat there being amazed at the breath control and the power of his voice--funny how I notice these things now that I'm older...LOL You might also notice that I included vids with them being the same age as me...like, right now... Quite Good Looking Guys!

Let's Listen! Hurt So Bad...In the TV program, Little Anthony indicated that this was his favorite song. I've listened to both a tape from when he was younger and this one...his mature voice is soooo much better! I find that this one song keeps playing through my mind...if Anthony has not been hurt in his personal life, then I am quite mistaken and he is even more of a wonderful performer than I've thought! We are able to see his feelings so intimate, so hurt...and when he says Go...we know that it is because he can no longer stand the pain...His favorite might very well also be his "signature" song because nobody can think of Anthony and the Imperials without thinking of Hurt So Bad...

...Shimmy Shimmy Ko Ko Bop...Such Fun!

Goin' Out of My Head..all from the TV performance... and you can find lots more online! I just had to share a few of the greatest here with you. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I!

This is a Wild Card!   Let me know what you think!

It's Entertainment! Presented by Celtic Thunder And... The Glee Project!

Now Running on PBS, WQED, Pittsburgh...

And recently I caught it! Admittedly, I was not prepared for the music to be what it was...I had seen the group before and most songs were more traditionally from their home land... After the shock, however, I was quite pleased with the songs!

After you listen to Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, you'll see choices for other selections: Standing on the Corner, a Surfer Medley, Just Like Jesse James, That's a Woman and Puppy Love...

Early in the program, I recognized one of the singers from another place! Damian McGinty

Here's the announcement on their home site

Celtic Thunder's, Damian McGinty has been selected as one of the top 12 finalists out of 40,000 contestants who competed for a coveted spot on "The Glee Project". The winner of the show will be cast in a seven-episode guest role in season three of hit show “Glee” on Fox. “The Glee Project”

Have you been watching this show? I have! It is on Sunday nights...and has only one or two shows left so the winner might have been named. by the time this is scheduled to run. Damian is now in the final four and has greatly matured during the time he's been working with the Glee Project. The selected individual will be placed on the television show, Glee--surely you've at least seen one of that show, right? Any show that includes singing normally gets at least checked out by me. As usual, I have mixed feelings about who might be selected, but I don't think they could lose if they pick Damian...

One other item on Celtic Thunder, WQED is now announcing an upcoming concert in Pittsburgh on November 1st, starring Paul Byrom who has such a fantastic voice!

This has been a Wild Card selection! Let me know what you think!
