Sharon Sala's Missing Will Keep You Reading All Night!

Ally was already up and setting out the sausages and bacon she’d cooked for breakfast when her father and both brothers came into the kitchen.

“Something smells good,” Porter said, and stole a piece of bacon. “Are we having biscuits?” Danny asked. “Isn’t this Sunday?” Ally teased. Danny grinned. “Yes, it’s Sunday, and yes, I know, we always have biscuits on Sunday. Just thought I’d ask.”

“Scrambled or fried?” Ally asked, referring to the eggs she had yet to cook. “Scrambled works for me,” her father said. Ally gave him a cool glance, then nodded. They had yet to smooth over the rough patch they’d had when she’d gone to Granny Devon’s, and she wasn’t going to be the first one to say “I’m sorry,” because she’d done nothing for which she needed to apologize. She began breaking eggs in the bowl as the men poured coffee, got butter and jelly from the refrigerator, as well as the salt and pepper shakers out of the cabinet, and set them on the table. Within minutes, they were seated with plates of fluffy yellow eggs, scrambled to perfection, at each place.

Gideon looked at each of his children until he had their complete attention; then he bowed his head and blessed the food. He was on the verge of saying amen when he paused and added the words, “Bless the cook that prepared it, amen.”

Ally looked up to find her father’s gaze upon her. She sighed. It was all the apology she was going to get. “Porter, pass Daddy the meat,” she said, then took a biscuit and passed them on.

Gideon worried all through the meal, hoping he hadn’t left his little bit of news too late. It would be horribly embarrassing to have company over after church and not have a meal to offer. He poured himself a second cup of coffee from the pot on the table, then took a third biscuit and buttered it up. “Good bread, daughter,” he said quietly.

“Thank you, Daddy,” Ally said, then glanced at the clock and got up from the table. “I’m going to get a roast out of the freezer and put it on low heat in the oven so it can cook while we’re at church.”

Gideon nodded approvingly, then slapped his knee as if he just remembered something. “Did I tell you we’re having company at noon?” Ally turned. “No, and please tell me it’s not the preacher because I don’t have anything special baked for dessert.” “No, no, nothing like that,” he said. “It’s just Freddie Joe.” She frowned. “Detweiller?” “Yes.” “Is he bringing his children?” “No, I think they’re at their granny’s for the weekend. He mentioned wanting one of my bull calves to raise for a new breeding bull. I told him he’d better come pick it out before I cut ’em all.”

“I’ll put extra vegetables in the roast. It will be fine.” Gideon breathed a quick sigh of relief. It was a lie, but it had served its purpose. The only stock on the Monroe property that Freddie Joe was interested in was his daughter.

Gideon had almost gotten over his guilt at deceiving his daughter when they pulled into the church parking lot. As soon as they got out of the truck, they joined other members of the congregation who were moving toward the doorway. The preacher was standing on the steps, greeting his parishioners, as well as paying special attention to the children who were accompanying their parents. Ally’s focus was on one of her old classmates, who was coming to church with a new baby. While she was happy for her friend’s little family, it only enforced the lack of her own.

She was halfway up the steps when someone suddenly grabbed her by the forearm. “Ally Monroe, is this you?” “Good morning, Granny Devon,” she said. There was a smile on the old woman’s face as she started to answer, then her sightless eyes suddenly rolled back in her head. She moaned, then she spoke.

“There’s a man who’s done evil. There’s a man who’s done bad. There’s a man who comes walkin’. There’s a man who’s so sad.”
The prediction gave Ally the chills. She remembered the previous warning that had come to her the night she’d had supper with Granny Devon. Now it seemed that evil still threatened her family. Before she could move, Gideon wrenched the old woman’s hand from his daughter’s arm and pushed Ally up the steps. When he got even with the preacher, he turned and pointed. “You tell that old woman’s family if she won’t stop witchin’, to keep her at home.” The preacher was taken aback by Gideon’s anger, which embarrassed Ally to no end.

As they moved into the church, Ally pulled away and whispered angrily, “You had no right to talk to Preacher John like that. Granny Devon doesn’t mean any harm, and you know it. Besides, nobody else is bothered by her predictions. I don’t know why you’re always so hateful about her. She’s a sweet old lady.”

“She’s not right,” Gideon muttered. “And I’m not discussing this with you again. Take your seat by your brothers.” Ally sat, but only because to do otherwise would have caused a bigger scene than what her father had done. She was in the house of God and knew how to behave, but she stayed angry with her father, just the same.

When the services were over, she got up and walked out on her own, and was already seated in the truck with the motor running and the air conditioner on high when her father and brothers got in. Gideon took one look at her face and resisted the urge to issue his normal set of orders about wasting fuel just to make cold air. He had bigger fish to fry than saving a few pennies and wisely drove them all home in silence...

 Freddie Joe Detweiller was sitting on the front porch when they pulled up the driveway. Ally’s mind was already on the things that needed to be done before dinner would be served, but to her surprise, Freddie Joe jumped up, took off his hat and opened the front door for her as she came up the steps.

“Good day, Ally. Something is sure smellin’ fine inside this house,” he said. “Just roast,” Ally said. “I thank you highly for allowing me to your table.” Ally shrugged. “Thank Daddy. He invited you.” Freddie Joe had an odd expression on his face as he looked at Gideon. Gideon nodded formally, then quickly looked away.

Freddie Joe came to himself in time to jump in front of Ally. He opened the door, then stepped aside, bowing slightly as she passed. As she stepped over the threshold and into the living room, she couldn’t help but notice that his hair was thinning at the crown. Then he smiled at her, and it was all she could do not to recoil from his yellow, tobacco-stained teeth. Still oblivious to the true reason for his presence, she paused to speak to Gideon...

Sala has presented us with a country setting in which  activities are mostly about the community, family and the church... I enjoyed reminiscing about my earlier years in this same environment, especially when she used one of my earlier colloquials of "crick" for creek. Yes, I, too, lived near a crick and had to work hard to change to the correct pronunciation... LOL

Ally's was a woman of 28 and had a birth defect of a crooked leg. She could walk, but it was normally with a drag for one foot.  She lived with her father and two brothers and had essentially taken over housekeeping duties when her mother died. But her father was a kind man and even though he wasn't quite sure how to do it, he wanted to keep his promise to his beloved wife and mother that he would help ensure Ally had a fulfilling life. Problem was, that most men were put off by her disability, fearing that her children would also be lame and they didn't want to risk that...

But when a neighbor proposed that he be allowed to call on Ally, her father, Gideon, thought this might be the answer, since he'd lost his wife and had three children already to take care of. Needless to say, Ally was not happy, especially when she learned her father had acted on her behalf and without talking, first, with her.

Ally, of course, wanted a different life, plus she had a dream early in her life that, one day, a tall dark man would come walking out from the woods surrounding their place and come to her and ask for a drink...

Still, even when it happened just as she had dreamed, she couldn't quite believe it... But, even Grannie Devon had given her hints over the years through her "sight" but lately, it was more about danger as well.

“Look to the family. Look to the heart. Danger around you. Trouble will start.”

Ally frowned. It was the last thing she’d expected to hear, and yet it wasn’t enough to tell her how to prevent it, or save herself and her family from ruin. “How, Granny? How will the trouble start?”

Wes Holden was the man who walked out of the woods... And, indeed, he asked for a drink of water!

But Wes may have been a dream for Ally--maybe even a God Incident. However, he was totally confused and had earlier been in a hospital when he went through a trauma nightmare from which he couldn't wake up. Wes had been doing fairly well upon his return from Afghanistan, but he was still having constant flashbacks that placed him right back into the middle of battle. It was his wife and son who were slowly bringing him back...

Until they were both killed in a domestic terrorist attack at the commissary at which they were shopping. Sometimes, when evil wins a battle, God intervenes and takes what is left of His chosen and helps them to find the way to where someone is now needed... It's not easy to understand, yet, it does show that God cares and loves His people and will provide strength to continue on in a new life.

For surely, there was a new battle to fight for Wes Holden. In the West Virginia Hills where he had wandered into one day. He had been in shock and had no memory of what had happened to his family...

Until he did...

Colonel Wes Holden had been through a lot, but what he now needed was to get out of the hospital--without anybody knowing that he had regained some of his memory. They had found a step-brother who was willing to take him (and his government check!) Wes knew only one thing, this was the way to get him out of the hospital, under medical discharge. He would deal later to get away from the one individual with whom he would never be safe, and planned his escape!

Even from the beginning, Ally could not escape how Wes, in essence, had fulfilled the dream that she'd had all her life. With her mobility problem, she was shy and hesitant to deal with a stranger, but when Wes came knocking, she not only gave him water, a meal...but also a place to stay! She had inherited a small cabin nearby and had Wes moving in that very day. Without ever mentioning it to her family!

While the relationship began between Ally and Wes, there was evil underway by a man who was out to make big money selling drugs... And Ally's two brothers were caught up in what would become a major disaster.

The story builds up from a drama to a point when what is happening is so tense that I, for one, wound up reading through the night to see how the story ended. With more than a touch of horror, Sala shares still another way just how one evil man can turn against anything or anybody that does not fulfill his needs. The villain, a science professional, who is also a sociopath, caring not what he was doing to harm others, was soon confronted by Wes, Ally, and, finally, her brothers, although it came too late for the two men who had hired on to make some quick money, only to begin to understand what was happening.

Of course, the ending was exactly what we wanted to have happen. But just how close disaster had come had included having to call in the DEA, the FBI and even the CDC...

Sala's stories are realistic, yet allow for the goodness of humanity to come through as winning that seemingly constant fight. Thriller Suspense fans will love this one! Highly recommended...

Live and Let Bite by Declan Finn Continues Extraordinary Series

Prologue: Dear Amanda San Francisco, September
Marco Catalano sat down at his laptop and started to compose an email. For a man who had just gone toe-to-toe with a demon with as much worry as the average citizen might have against a mugger, the email terrified him out of all proportion.

Dearest Amanda, I have a secret to tell you. Not too surprising, is it? My very smile must appear to be a mask at times. In fact, I have two secrets to tell you. Neither may surprise you. Or both will. Though which would surprise you, or surprise you more, I couldn’t begin to say, or guess. After all, if there’s anyone who knows me better than my father or my confessor, it would be you. I’ve told you before about the night I lost Lily for the first time. Yes, it was before I met you, but I think I told that story vividly enough. It was a mugging. The man held me at knifepoint, and I killed him. I told you the truth in that I did have to kill him. I made a mess of it. What could have been a quick disable or kill turned into a bloody mess in more ways than one. I hurt him. And I kept on hurting him until he stopped moving. What I didn’t tell you is that I liked hurting him. I liked making him suffer. I enjoyed making him bleed and die. In short, Amanda, I am a bit of a monster.
You need blood to live, and you have only killed when you needed to, but I’m the one who enjoys it. I enjoy the stab, the slice, the twist of the knife. However, I’ve been made aware that I might not be quite so insidious and monstrous a human being as I thought. Apparently, my time in prayer and church and confession may not be 100% for naught.
My second secret is at the same time both much more innocent, yet much creepier at the same time, given secret #1.
I love you, Amanda. That is my big secret. It sounds stupid to say it, but I love everything about you. I really do. I love your accent. I love your hair. I love your smile. I love how smart you are. I love how you think. I love your eyes, and the way they sparkle. I like just being around you. And I like who I am when I’m around you. Do you remember what I said to you in the graveyard as we “pretended” to make out and profess our love to each other, so we could bait the other vampires? I wasn’t pretending. Everything I said to you was true. Everything I did, I meant. I honestly can’t imagine what your reaction is going to be to this. You could go either way. The best outcome is if you also meant what you said that night,
and we have both been too dense to identify what was said as truth. The worst case, I cannot begin to contemplate. No matter what, Amanda, I will always love you. Marco

Live and Let Bite

By Declan Finn

Merle was heading back to San Francisco and wanted Marco to go with him, offering him the opportunity to go on with his degree program to become a physician's assistant.

The main reason Marco was considering it was to try to separate himself from Amanda, as he was still unable to believe that he was worthy of her love...

And then, of course, Merle was facing an invasion of vampires with little backup and Marco knew his need was dire... Merle had a magic shop in San Francisco and had several employees there who he thought would probably help him, but that was it. The FBI wanted him to deal with the weird stuff that was happening, but they really didn't want to acknowledge that Merle was FBI...

Merle wanted Marco to slowly become involved, not wanting his staff to believe he was replacing one of their own, who had been killed. So he went on about his studies and met one of the team, who immediately hooked on to Marco. She was a caregiver and immediately tried to take Marco under her wing... And so, the merge began to happen and Marco took part in early battles...

While that was going on, Marco missed Amanda more than he had believed possible and on a lonely night, he wrote her an email, pouring out his heart to her, admitting his great love... and more about him... By then, Marco had been greatly affected by meeting a stranger in the last book, who explained much to him...about how God might be seeing what Marco was doing...

But even though email is very fast...if nobody reads that mail, the time it takes to send it matters little, except to the sender who does not even consider that his mail has not been delivered. Marco slowly began to come apart, thinking that Amanda could not accept what he'd shared with her. He wrote more often, never receiving any response.  And never even considering that Amanda had been too busy working to read any of her email... If you're a fan of Scorpion like me, you'll know how Walter O'Brien gets when he's jealous and depressed...

He sat at the bar of the club, and wondered if he shouldn't burn the place down. It wasn't a vampire haven, but it was a stalking ground. That wasn't the reason he wanted to burn the place down, but he thought it would be a good idea on general principles. Flashing lights and loudly deafening noises weren't his idea of a good time. He preferred some nice music in the background as he read a book.
Heck, had the music even been something good, like Nightwish or Dragonforce, he might not have minded the volume (okay,
 some Dragonforce songs at maximum volume, would probably lead to bleeding eardrums, but that would still have been preferable).
He chuckled. Not that I'm a snob or anything...
Someone touched him on the arm, and he turned. The blonde was utterly stunning. Marco's face didn't even shift a little, and he made certain to look at her lips. "Hi there."
She gave him a toothy grin. "You're cute."
He leaned into her, almost so that he could put his lips to her ear. "Could you repeat that?" he asked at normal volume.
Unseen by anyone else, his left hand drew out a syringe. The needle was thin enough to be barely felt by most people, but sharp enough to penetrate most clothing. As he spoke in her ear, he stuck her in the belly and injected the contents straight into her abdomen.
The woman stopped blinked, jerked, and tore off for the bathroom.
She never came out.
He sighed, and shook his head.
The bartender looked at him. "You scare off another one? What do you say to them, dude?"
Marco Catalano shrugged, his smile still amused. Fifty CCs of Holy Water into the guts of a vampire. "No idea."
~~~
But soon, all that Marco had been doing in New York had caught up with him in San Fran...and another assassin had been sent to rid the world of this extraordinary human who even vampires did not want to look into his eyes... But this time they'd sent an assassin that was sent to kill other vampires! They called her "The Slayer..." And this time, she had two targets: Marco...and...Amanda!
And Amanda had come to San Francisco! And, no, she hadn't read Marco's emails...but she came to him...
San Francisco Amanda and Marco were still embracing outside the club when they heard a voice in the dark say, “It’s about to get worse.” The two of them turned. Amanda blinked. “Merle?”
Merle Kraft came out of the shadows, his hair a mess and his jacket in tatters. “Listen, it’s not safe here. For either of you. I think there’s been a hit put out on you in the vampire underworld.”
Marco blinked a moment, and then laughed, long and loud and hard. Merle raised a brow. “I was attacked outside of the UN building by a very tall redhead.” Amanda started. Her eyes narrowed. “Redhead? That sounds like the vampire who killed Mikhail the Bear in Brooklyn.” Marco and Amanda exchanged a look. Suddenly, she tensed, and then jumped onto him. “Down!”
Amanda dragged Marco to the ground as a light metal spear sped through the air where they had stood. It impacted against a dumpster and went through, knocking it over. Amanda and Marco rolled apart, the vampire taking a stake from Marco’s jacket, the PA student slipping two from his sleeves. They came to their feet facing the same direction, feet apart, left arm outstretched as a shield, stakes ready to kill. Marco held his with the points toward the thumbs, and Amanda held hers upside down in her hand like a commando.
The next missile came right at Amanda through the shadows. Amanda grabbed it, spun, and used its momentum to toss it back at the attacker. A shape darted out, leaping out at Amanda over the spear. A mop of long red hair framed the face of the most hideous vampire she’d ever seen, and two glowing green viper’s eyes.
Her first move was a swipe at Amanda’s hand. The strike made Amanda’s arm go numb and the stake fly into the wall, where it shattered on impact. Amanda ducked in time for the backhand to soar over her head and punched for her opponent’s stomach…
And into the waiting hand. The vampire grabbed her hand, threw Amanda against the far wall of the alley, and was ready to leap atop Amanda to finish the job.
Marco casually took aim and threw his blade as he dropped forward into a roll. With a blur, the vampire caught the knife and hurled it back at him with deadly accuracy, without looking. Marco would have been dead had he remained standing for even a split second longer. The splinters embedded themselves into the wall.
Marco’s roll brought him to the vampire’s feet, and he jammed both stakes into her flesh, one in her thigh and one in her side. He had two impact-firecrackers taped to the sides, and they went off when they pressed against her flesh, igniting the stakes and setting the vamp aflame.
By that time, Marco had already bounced away, running for Amanda, leaving the vampire for dead… even as she rolled to put the fire out. Marco slid to his knees, stopping at Amanda’s side. He grabbed her shoulders and shook her firmly. Amanda’s eyes snapped open, and she leapt, grabbed him, rolled over him and threw one of his stakes into the vampire’s back.
Marco briefly wondered why she bothered if the other vampire was on fire… then he noticed that the vamp was no longer flaming. The vampire stopped moving and dropped to her staked knee. Both of her hands went for the stake protruding from her heart. Merle made his move, and led with a flying spin kick that knocked her head back and dropped her onto the ground. She blinked, as though she hadn’t even felt it. All of her concentration was focused on the stake as she slowly drew it out of her heart and rolled to her side.
Marco and Amanda looked at each other. “That doesn’t happen, does it?”
“No,” she answered.
“This is bad, then, right?”
“You betcha.”
The vampire turned, ripping both stakes from her lower body. Marco dropped, dragging Amanda with him as the stakes flew overhead, shattering brick and mortar. Merle jumped in again and the vampire tossed him aside, slamming him against a brick wall. Marco reached for the small of his back and drew out a water pistol. The attacking vampire became a cloud of mist, and swooped in under the stream of water, and came up, ripping the pistol from Marco’s hand.
Without blinking, Amanda grabbed Marco, ripping two stakes from the inside of Marco’s jacket
and threw one straight for the assassin.
The vampire smacked it aside and it shattered. The two women were only yards apart when Marco put himself between them, rosary wrapped around one hand, and cross held up in the other. The vampire smiled and stopped two feet away, leveling her glowing green eyes on Marco. “You think just holding those will hurt me?” she hissed in a brogue.
“No.” Marco slammed the fist with the rosary wrapped around it into her nose, a hiss accompanying it, then slapping her with the flat side of the crucifix. “I expect that to hurt.”
The vampire staggered a little, shaken. The center of her face was smoking, and audibly sizzling, and so was the side of her face. It looked like she had been branded by both hits. “I’ll be seeing you,” she snapped before she ran so fast, she might as well have evaporated.
Marco turned, saw Amanda was all right, then looked at Merle, slowly rising to his feet. "Thanks a lot."
Kraft shrugged. “I tried to warn you. I’ve been running from this creature for the last few days, and I’m tired. Besides, I would’ve brought a squirt gun, but those post-9/11 security dweebs at the airport confiscated it. They didn’t find my sharpened stakes, but they took my squirt gun.”
Marco nodded absently. “We need to find the others in case they’re in trouble.”
~~~

Merle had been back doing his own work, since Marco had moved to San Francisco... Why Merle and other even took an exciting trip to Afghanistan--yes, vampires were there too! It was there that he'd discovered materials with the symbol of the United Nations and knew he had to get it out of the country and learn more!

But he hurried back, with his investigation leading toward the UN and he'd been attacked by The Slayer! Something big was going on and obviously extra help for the vampires had been called in... He got there just in time to warn Marco and Amanda, but not early enough for them to be able to prepare--any more than they always were, that is...

And with both attacking The Slayer (I thought you might enjoy one of the fight scenes from the book), was defeated and ran... But that was definitely not the end! Be prepared for escalation of the war waged by one woman and her minions, against those who battle for good! Wow, readers will begin to believe that nobody is going to come out alive in this war!

But... Well, you'll just have to read it to believe it! Sure would make an exciting, unbelievably fantastic movie to see the action described. In fact, I wonder whether the action could actually be done since it is sooo farrrr outttt! What a story! I know one thing...I'm not ready to give up on this series until I know exactly who and what Marco Catalano is!

Thinking about the content, it is my opinion, that each book can stand alone as an exciting action novel. Read all three - they are highly recommended...

Let the Dead Sleep
"She was speaking inanely. Anything. She refused to accept
that his life was slipping away. And then...
"Angus Cafferty sat bolt upright, gazing at her. His snow-white
hair was mussed and wild; his sky-blue eyes settled on her
intently.
"Lass, so late, too late! I should have spoken to you about this
so many times, so long ago. I'd thought...I'd thought I'd wait
until you got to the age of thirty, never thinking this could come
so quick upon me. Just a few more years...just a few to leave you
in a normal life, to know innocence--I was a fool, I have let you
down, but you hear me now, Danni, please, hear me now! You
mustn't sell the shop. You must never sell the shop. It's our lot
in life, that's what it is, and one that matters in a manner most
dire.  Ah, girl, what have I done? Wanting all to be safe and
serene for you..." He leaned toward her, gripping her hand so

couldn't cry out...No! Ye canna sell the store! And the book,

heare me, lass, do you hear me? Ah, I love you, Dannie my girl,..
The book...The Book of Truth...

A Cafferty and
 Guinn Novel

By Heather Graham

I read author Heather Graham as often as I can, and I had to laugh when I checked out my last review for Nightwalker, which I then called my favorite from her... You guessed it, I was about to say the same thing for her latest! BUT, instead I'll start by talking about the characters, Cafferty and Guinn--they are certainly worthy of a following! Check out Graham's announcement for the series on her blog!

"He glanced over at Danni. She was pale and quiet
and once again sodden. She had the unique ability
to somehow look beautiful in such a state. Maybe
it was more than beautiful; she had an air about
her that was almost beyond anything carnal. Then
again, he hadn't felt that way when he's watched
her while they were dancing to the voodoo drums.
"He'd felt entirely carnal then.
"He gave himself a mental shake. Yes, indeed, she
was proving herself to be Angus's daughter at
every turn.
"It had just been a hell of a lot easier and more
straightforward to work with Angus..."
~~~
Danni Cafferty has just inherited an antique shop from her father. What she doesn't know is that she's inherited much, much more! There were many such shops in the French Quarter, but this shop was known for "taking/accepting things that could not be offered to others..." And her father had known what to do with them... Danni did not...
east/treasure-hunting-in-new-orleans
So when Michael Quinn shows up there, thinking she would at least know of him and his involvement with her father, he was somewhat shocked to learn that she had never heard of him.
Fortunately, a long-time assistant of her father was able to speak on his behalf!
But they didn't have time to get to know each other now; they had a job! A widow had rushed into the shop and demanded that they come and remove a statue. The statue had already killed her husband and she feared for her own life. Of course, Danni did not understand why she had come there rather than to the police! "Oh, you stupid, stupid girl!" Mrs. Simon had cried. Finally, to calm her, Danni agreed to come see the statue...
But by the time that Danni and Quinn went to visit, they found her dead, hanging by a rope...The searched everywhere, but the statue was gone. They did find where a window had been broken, the statue apparently stolen...
Quinn had once been a cop before he became a private investigator. He had partnered with Jake Larue and he, fortunately, came to the scene... He was also at the scene when they later found the thief of the bust...also now dead...
When Danni returned to the shop and, in particular, her studio, it was then that she knew that something was happening to her... Her last painting of a woman had been envisioned rather than created as a portrait. The woman was Mrs. Simon, a woman she had never seen or met before she had come into the shop that morning!
She began to search on the internet and slowly began to find information... The bust was of Pietro Giovanni Miro who had murdered many people... The bust was beautiful, made of marble in typical Roman style. The eyes were strange, though, seeming to watch you... It had been placed in a New Orleans cemetery to protect others, but had been stolen...
And each time it was stolen, or even touched, the individual died...
"Wait! Natasha said. She slipped a hand
into the pocket of her skirt and brought
forth a handful of medallions on chains...
"Saint Michael," Natasha explained.
"The patron saint of protection. And your
namesake, Quinn. Wear these...In voodoo,
a lot is taken from the Catholic Church,
so you needn't think these are just
tourist souvenirs!"
~~~
"You're already wearing Saint Michael's
medaals. No finer saint with whome to
battle evil!"
"He came back down to them, his gray eyes
serious. "I bless you," he said, "in the
name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Ghost." He drew crosses on their foreheads
and then slipped small crosses into their
hands... Your belief will protect you..."
This is NOT a treasure hunt, although it definitely is a provocative chase that moves swiftly, leaving bodies behind... With Quinn and Cafferty trying to plan ahead how they may be able to find it! And to do this, Billy stayed in the shop to keep watch...but Danni had first gone to Natasha, the voodoo priestess for guidance and then Quinn wanted to visit also. But he didn't seek supernatural guidance, he wanted her help in identifying names they had found in the Simon home--the Priestess was firmly entrenched in the city and probably could help.

In the midst of all that they were doing, Quinn also contacted a local priest of the Catholic Church...And it was the five of them that planned how they could infiltrate a ceremony that was to be held...where they learned that the Statue would be found...

Paranormal evil finds the humans necessary to take on all that he
wants...Watch what happens as a statue travels from place to place, seeking those with whom he can...commune...

Spooky with great adventure for this new couple who are
struggling to understand their new relationship and still fight evil!
Scary good! Highly recommended!

D. L. Havlin Provides Recommended "Must-Read"!

Check out Havlin's  Blog!

"McKenney took a deep breath. "I was talking to Dawes.
He said he's coming back to paint the cross on top of the
steeple every five years. I want to do something like that
for you. What can I do? What would you really want of me?
"Reverend Hurley sat down in the chair next to the bed.
He sighed. "You're determined?
"Yes, with all my spirit."
"After remaining silent for several seconds, the reverend
said, "I'm going to ask something that may be very hard
for you to do, Lieutenant."
When Hurley hesitated, McKenney prompted, "I'll do
anything."
"Marcus' sad smile spoke as definitely as his words.
"Some things that may seem very easy can become very
hard, and I fear I'm going to ask one of those from you.
You are a fine man, Lieutenant. You're honest, high-
minded, and honorable. So, what I'm going to ask you
may trouble you. This war is over. The Confederate
leaders haven't acknowledged that, I don't know if
they realize it or not, but it is. I see the death of more
men, the foolish destruction of property, the
prolonging of the southern people's agony, when the
South can no longer win, as sins. I will ask that you
no longer lead men in battle, that you'll never kill
another man. No matter what the situation, no matter
whether you perceive your honor will be lost, no matter
how threatened you or those around you are--that may
be very hard."...
"I asked you what you would require of me, and what
you have asked, I will do..."
The Cross on
  Cotton Creek

By. D. L. Havlin

This powerful story has more to offer than the historical perspective...perhaps when a cross is involved, miracles seem to happen? Or perhaps many individuals can never understand that time when Americans turned against each other in war? For those like me, we can't understand such hatred--perhaps that's why a story of such love in the midst of that war creates the impact that this story will have--if you only believe...

The story begins in the 50s, in a small town you probably never heard of. Away from the town with lots of land around it, a country church was once built. During the Civil War, something terrible happened their--so terrible that it would never be forgotten by the town folks and those who were related to those who died that day.

Landry Dawes is the storyteller--I won't go into which one because there will always be one who would pass on the story, learning more each time somebody went back...

To paint the Cross...

For during the war, one of the Landry Dawes was a confederate soldier who had been the last man available to finish an important mission--to deliver supplies, which included gold, further south. But they never got further than when they had first been attacked. Hiding the gold, the men were soon gone, but Landry Dawes was injured and wound up at the church on Cotton Creek.

Soon Eli McKenney joined him there with a leg wound that was treated by a vet but would never heal properly. Reverend and Mrs. Hurley, who had once bought six slaves, only to give them their freedom, still had two of those individuals, who had decided to stay, helping them with their church activities.

Now they were risking their lives to hide and help the two confederate soldiers. The two soldiers were so grateful that they wanted to do something to repay the Reverend. Landry agreed to his request to repaint the cross before he left. Dawes' response was that he would not only paint it then, but he and his family would return every five years to repaint it and keep it bright and shining and maintained... But what he next asked of Eli McKenney was much harder--never to kill another man...

And then later, the Reverend had asked Landry to also not kill. He made the same promise; however, Landry recognized his short temper, and he knew he would never keep his word if the Yanks came again. So he decided to leave and head back home.

That decision saved his life...

For that church was soon surrounded by soldiers. McKenney had been hidden up in a high tree away from the church. He had tied himself to the limb so he wouldn't fall off and even then,  as far up as he'd been pulled, he couldn't get down. So, by straining to turn his head, he had to watch all that happened, until most of the church had been destroyed, except for the cross...

Only one had not been there of the families who died that day. But she had heard of what was happening but arrived too late except to save McKenney. And soon, there was nobody in the community that could tell what had happened...

Except the ghosts who remained and led to "some" of the miracles that started to happen when somebody bowed there in front of the cross to pray...

Perhaps there have been even more miracles that have happened since those that were recorded in his novel. One thing I do believe is that if that cross still stands near the remains of that church,  a "Landry Dawes" will be coming back to paint it every five years...

And what I also believe is that D. L. Havlin has provided us with a wonderful Civil War Novel  that includes an unusual side of that time when men of faith asked that the killing stop and that the promises of men may continue through the decades and hundreds of years when they are asked to give their word... A truly outstanding tale of wonder, ghosts...and...love.  I offer this one to you as a must-read!

Alert! Start Playing Beethoven ASAP To Keep Seirens Calm...

I just had to give you some type of warning! My computer started slowing down as soon as I started to read this book...I just know that it's been taken over because "they" don't want you to know about what's happened in Orphea! I learned from reading it, though, that if you play Grosse Fuge by the great master Beethoven, that the seirens can be subdued...at least long enough to read my review!   ...I hope...

Fortunately, for me, I've been a fan of classical and most other types of music as far back as I remember but classical is still there at the top when I thing of music genres... Warren L. Woodruff, however, has seen the evolution of our music as the young are pulled in to dark, loud, angry shouting and screaming, that has deaden the beauty and joy that great music can bring. And brought us Dr. Fuddle...

And so it was in Orphea, the land of music and beauty, that loud, weird music was being played and the land was starting to die...

Children were being taken and were led into a land where everything beautiful was gone, and watched by creatures called Seirens--picture big cats with wings... The land was being taken over, led by Jedermann, who had stolen  the Gold Baton!

"Dr. Fuddle instructed Antonio to beat a measure
of three counts in preparation and they began to
play. By the third measure both creatures were
purring.
"Now it's time to bring out one of the fiercest
examples of counterpoint every conceived," Dr.
Fuddle said, placing another musical score onto
the stands. "This is called the Grosse Fugue
by Beethoven from his string Quartet in B-flat
Major."
"
Brace yourselves," Einstein said.
Dr. Fuddle motioned for Kathy to play her
viola and Leonard his cello. Then he brought
two other string players, with violins to join
them.
The moment Christina stepped forward to watch,
the creatures began to shriek.
"Ready?" Dr. Fuddle said. "Play!"
That baton was now as black as Jefermann and all his seirens...

Now he was looking to steal ancient magical instruments that were being held...for the messengers! There had been a prophecy that Messengers of Music would come.

One day, Tyler Harrington decided to investigate an old, supposedly haunted, house near his home. He had always been warned by his mother to stay away before she died. But now, he was twelve and thinking that he was old enough now to explore, beginning by looking into a window.

Amazingly, Dr. Fuddle was sitting and playing a grand piano! Of course, Tyler didn't know who he was at the time, for he was so shocked that he ran... But he called a friend, who called two other friends, and Tyler took his sister, so that five children entered that old house that day...

And wound up choosing to enter the gold door...

Each had a talent that came along with one of those special musical instruments...

But there was magic and all things evil working against them to prevent them from helping to bring the joy of music back...

With a taste of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," "Harry Potter", and another much older story that has been shared over and over in many different ways of one who brought the spirit to fight evil, Warren L. Woodruff has given us the world where musicians live forever!

Meet Beethoven, Liszt, Mozart, et. al., plus all of the thousands of others who have played beautiful music that brings us joy and laughter--beauty and happiness. This literary musical masterpiece is a delightful way to introduce great music to our children and all those older...

And check online material to continue sharing that music! This is a brilliant masterpiece written by a man sharing his love in both word and his programs... And, by the way, you don't have to have a musical background to enjoy this... You might have to deal with Jederman and his seirens, though, a little longer... If you still hear them coming, I encourage you to play Beethoven's Choral Fantasy because Dr. Fuddle  is "proud to say with utter assurance to everyone within the sound of my voice: the light of harmony has destroyed our enemy."  Hey! Celebrate! Celebrate...Listen to the Music!

Bitten Twice Blog Tour Back For Review of Marked! Welcome!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092319/
Marked

By Bitten Twice

Start by reading First Stop of Tour to BRH if you missed it and Meet Bitten Twice!

If I were a writer, Marked would be something like I would write...I love cats, cat shape-shifter movies have been favorites, and, of course, I loved the TV show "Beauty and the Beast." Most importantly, the main character is the King of the Cats! How cool!

Let me start by sharing this beautifully written opening paragraph of the Prologue:
Since the beginning of time, the invitation for dusk was pre-empted by a glorious display of the sun’s magnificence. The light, in a breathtaking array of reds, oranges, and yellows, kissed the mountains, rocks, trees and grasses, in a promise of tomorrow’s possibilities before being consumed by darkness.
It is there in Africa that King Zor met the human woman he had marked. And later, she bore him three cubs but died during their birth. King Zor took them to the Queen of his pride and there Zan, Ari, and Ova lived until Zan was old enough. Zan was now King of the Cats!

Marked In New York City, the head of the Knights of Templar had called a special meeting. The future held even more dangers than the past and a council of agencies had been formed to provide safety and security. The United Nations, Interpol, FBI, CIA, et.al., were joined with representatives from those animals who could change into human form--the cats and wolves.

It was on his way to this meeting that Zan met Catherine... Catherine was the administrative assistant to the Council's chairman.(my own imagination led me to believe that this Catherine is the great-great-great granddaughter of Catherine, who bore Vincent his child, in the television show...LOL You'll see why when you see some of the things that the younger Catherine does. Actually, since they weren't explained, I'm hoping that there is going to be at least one sequel to Marked.)

Mutual attraction which quickly drew Catherine and Zan into a hot and heavy interlude led to the beginning of Catherine's being marked as Zan's...

However, just as the meeting was to begin, Ari, Zan's sister notified him that his palace was being surrounded leading to an attack--by Templar Knights! It was soon realized that what surrounded them was not even human and Ari led a defensive fight that soon defeated the invaders.

But the Council realized that this was probably just the beginning and immediately assignments were made to the various groups attending.

Preparing to leave, Zan first made sure that Catherine was safe. But the guards were unsuccessful and she was abducted, only to be quietly whisked away by Ova, Zan's sister. Ova is a character you will enjoy getting to know and, especially, watch as she comes into her own magical powers.

Thinking she was taking Catherine to safety, she took her to their home where large cats roamed, guarding the palace. Finally she went to sleep--to wake up next to Zan--As King of the Cats! Can't you just imagine her face as she awakens to long golden fur surrounding her...

It was an underlord of Hell who had found portals into our world and was stirring up trouble this time in a classic good versus evil action adventure. This is an exciting complement to the instinctive "mating" of Catherine and Zan. To add even more spice, Ari becomes interested in none other than the leader of the wolves...

If you love fantasy, this book is definitely for you. It is fun to imagine the catacombs that run under New York City, to see what sophisticated computer and electronic tools are used along with ancient magical swords, and to see the writer's creative shape shifts in the middle of life-threatening activities. Bitten Twice certainly knows fantasy and is able to provide a flawlessly created world into which readers willingly tumble. Highly recommended for your enjoyment.

Glenn Thater

Creatures of all kinds came to claim Midgaard...

The Gateway:

The Harbinger of Doom Saga

By Glenn G. Thater

In olden days in the world of man called Midgaard in the kingdom of Lomion, there was a gathering... Lord Aradon Eotrus was missing. His oldest son, Brother Claradon Eotrus, a Caradonian Knight had pulled together a band to find him. But just as it had been when Lord Aradon had gone, when the night came, a great wailing began...and the mist would descend... for what came was not of this world...

No matter what, when you begin to read Thater, you will immediately see his expertise in writing Olde and Middle  English. In fact, for more than twenty-five years, Glenn G. Thater has written works of fiction and historical fiction focusing on the genres of heroic fantasy and sword and sorcery. The Gateway is first in his saga and certainly sets the stage for upcoming exciting adventurous battles! One thing I appreciated from this author was an extensive list of names, people, places and all things important for the Saga. It makes an easy reference and provides effective documentation and definition for the fantasy world that was created.

The Gateway: (Harbinger of Doom)

And so it was, that on the first day Claradon's men reached a dark barren circle and they began to search for his father and his men.

Nothing was found except a number of gold coins...

But when the night came, the wailing began...and the mist descended.

However, the men were ready. Each man had been provided a magical sword or dagger and they drew together row after row and started forward!

Until they came to a huge dark building--a building that had not been there during the day!

And they also found remnants of Lord Aradon, but no man lived or was even left of their bodies...

But this group had prepared, bringing magical weapons as well as those men or creatures that could use magic against the enemy, for surely the enemy came from none other than the realm of the chaos lords! And when they did, they were grotesque, loathsome creatures that immediately began to tear the soldiers apart...

Two men stood out in the ensuing battle: Sir Gabriel Garn, House Weapons Master and close friend and mentor to Claradon, and Lord Angle Theta, a knight-errant and nobleman from a far-off land. In fact, he was a stranger to most and was not fully appreciated as a peer--until he began to share his great magic and slice through the creatures like butter...

In the constant fight between good and evil, The Gateway takes you into one both mystical and bloody. Be prepared, ye readers, lest you be attacked by one of the creatures coming through to Midgaard... Thater writes with a realism like no other; fantasy lovers of sword and sorcery--check out this short first battle and be ready for the entire saga awaiting you!
