Crusader: A Catholic Action Horror Novel - St. Tommy N.Y.P.D. Book 5 - by Declan Finn

Kommissar Berger simply stood there, hands in his pockets. A small smile played out on the corner of his lips. “Can anyone join this party? Or is it invite only?” “Depends. You want to play?” I asked. “Or shut us down?” Berger rolled his eyes, reached past us both, and grabbed another shotgun, a sidearm, and went straight to stuffing magazines into his pockets. He took the trunk, slammed it down, and turned towards us. “Are you coming?” I waved him through. “After you.” He racked the gun to feed the magazine. “Danke.” As we made our way back to the manner house, Pearson asked, “What brought you out after us?” Berger spared him a glance. “Right now, there are dozens of politzei tearing apart the local corruption. Once they get someone to break, it will take hours for a tactical team to get together. Even assuming that this group of Jihadi psychopaths hear nothing about their protection system falling apart, they could sacrifice dozens of women between now and the time the politzei get their act together.” Pearson and I exchanged a look behind Berger’s back. “You think that Gaiman was telling the truth about sacrifices?” Berger tossed a glance over his shoulder at me. “I’m certain that Gaiman believes it. It may even be that sacrifices are happening. Do I believe in actual demons? If I did, I’m not sure I could do the job. Though I have faked multiple faiths, depending on who the suspect hates the most.”
We came at the manor house from the side. The woods on that end were thick, and provided plenty of cover, straight to the house itself. But we didn’t want to try for the front door. If someone didn’t have that rigged with a Claymore mine, Berger, Pearson and I would all be surprised. I helped Berger up to the window on the side of the house. He had no problem with opening the window and sliding in. He reached out and helped us in. The first room looked like a small den. Bookcases went clear to the ceiling. There was an office desk up against the windows. My shotgun was up and ready. I cautiously slid up to the door and pressed my ear against it. There were no sounds. I cracked the door open. No one to the right of it. I swung the door open, cleared right, then swung left. There were six armed men casually walking down the brightly lit hallway, chatting amicably. Their fezzes were marked with the Swastika, but the rest of their clothing was casual. Boom went my shotgun. The first two went down without even realizing what happened. I racked and fired again. Ch-ch,boom. I stepped out of the door, charging into them. Ch-ch,boom. Ch-ch,boom. The last man standing barely had his hand on his sidearm when I leaped for him. Driving my elbow into his face. Every door in the hall in front of me opened. Every man who poked his head out held a weapon. Crap. I put my right shoulder up against the wall opposite the den we’d entered and backpedaled, firing at any target I saw. Berger was on one knee in the doorway, firing with his sidearm. Pearson was above him, firing with the AK-47. They covered as I came back and threw myself through the den door. “I think we’re screwed,” Berger said as we closed the door and dropped one of the bookcases to barricade it.
I grabbed my phone and dialed. When I heard the click, I said, “Dreidel dreidel dreidel, that I made out of clay. Dreidel dreidel dreidel, dreidel I shall play.” Berger looked at me like I had lost my mind, singing a children’s tune in the middle of a shootout. I slipped the phone away and said, “Everyone, behind the desk. We’ll need cover.” The door exploded with bullets ripping through it. They kicked open part of the door. Then they shot through the bookcase we dropped in front of it. The three of us returned fire, into the doorway and just on either side of it. Pearson and I used the AK rifles. Berger used the shotgun from time to time, wanting a better shot than just blindly firing into the hall. A grenade rolled into the den. “Grenade!” Berger called. The windows to the side of the den blew in as a shape crashed through. It was long-limbed and spindly. It was built along the line of a department store mannequin but fast and mobile. It scooped up the grenade and spun in one motion, throwing it into the hallway. It exploded, scattering the men outside. Fresh men came in moments later, and smacked right into the shape. It grabbed a gun and bent the barrel back, one-handed. Ripping the gun away, it punched into the man’s throat at the same time. It took the gun and threw it so hard, it embedded itself in another terrorist’s face. Ch-ch. It shot forward and deflected the gun with one hand as it spun backwards, the heel of its foot kicking the Jihadi off of his feet. It came to its feet, grabbed a terrorist, and drove a knee into his stomach. Without resetting the foot, it mule-kicked into an approaching gunman, kicking the gun away. It whirled and hurled the gunman aside, sending him crashing into his backup.
Berger watched the whirlwind of chaos and destruction. “What the fuck was that?” It was why angels had not clamored to our side. God had granted me either a little foresight or a lot of luck. It only occurred to me when I met Adara’s grandfather—a Rabbi of Prague. He had the key to an ancient secret. Back in the hospital room in Prague I had said one word to Adara’s grandfather, Rabbi Weil. He nodded, and I told Lena to tell him how many we needed. “As many as possible.” That word harkened back to a mythology in Jewish folklore. It referred to a protector of the Jewish Ghetto specific to Prague. It was what I said to Berger right now. That word was “Golem.”

I don't know about you, but when I think of horror, immediately I think back to the many horror movies I was scared to watch, but did, on television. At some point, unless I was specifically asked to review a book, I avoided movies after I saw The Exorcist. Until Declan Finn came into my life... Check to the right to see my review of the first book in this series. I wish I had the time to read all that I missed, but maybe some day in the future... In the meantime, I have a few words to say about this book! Supernatural! Religious/ancient myths, demons, Thriller, Living Saint... Wow, Fantastic, Unbelievably realistic...

Finn has been writing many years... So if you enjoy Horror, with a twist of religious beings, do search for "Declan Finn" in the blog search because I've review his first trilogy...and quite a few more...

By the Way, let's start with a phrase that many of you may recognize: "Pray Without Ceasing..." See how it is done in the following fight scene! Our main character has some fantastic God-given skills--unbelievable ones-- but in this book, he needed help... No, Not our Super Hero Iron Man - Just Think - Golem!

Jesus Christ protects and defends me with the power of His Holy and Divine Grace. I drove my right fist into the back of the dragon’s head, then stomped on it. Jayden detached her own head, regrew one, and slashed, taking another leg. The Virgin of Nazareth covers me with her sacred and divine mantle, protecting me in all my dolors and afflictions. Instead of regrowing the leg, I fell on Jayen’s back. My right leg wrapped around her throat as my hands ripped the wing from her body and tossed it aside. Her tail whipped around to choke me, but she forgot that the golem mech didn’t need to breathe. And God, with His Divine Mercy and great power, is my defender against the evils and persecutions of my enemies. I shifted the clay in my hands to become like blades. I grabbed the base of her tail and closed in, slamming both blades to meet in her flesh. The fire that poured from the wound burned the hands off and scorched the face plate. Glorious Saint George, in the name of God, extend to me your shield and your powerful arms, defending me with your strength and your greatness— I kneed Jayden in the spine, and I heard a crack. She roared and rolled us both over, flattening trees, paths, fences, fountains, and statues as we pummeled one another. And may my enemies underneath your feet become humble and submissive to you. I punched her in the throat. So Be it in the Power of God— She clawed my mech’s face off. —of Jesus Christ and of the Divine Holy Spirit. I ripped her arm off and clubbed her with it. Amen. I found myself grabbing naked flesh with my own hands and threw Jayden off me. She staggered away in her succubus form, bat wings smaller than before. I was mobile but unsteady on my feet. The clay of the golems once more reformed around me, the armor light but strong. Gauntlets formed over my fists. A helmet formed around my skull. My entire body felt invigorated. The golem clay had reformed into divine powered armor. I suddenly had a quick image of Robert Downey, Junior saying "I! Am! Golem Man!, followed by a Black Sabbath guitar riff," but I pushed it away. I launched myself at Jayden, my fist driving her back, staggering. Her hands ignited with unholy black flame. I shot in, grabbed her wrist, and wrenched it into her own face. She screamed horribly before she put out the fire. Jayden kicked off me and launched into flight, back towards the house. She’s going back to the pit. If she gets the pillar of fire started again, and recharges, then we have to do this all over again. I readied myself to sprint after her, then paused. There was a deliberate gap in the gauntlet. On the finger of my right hand, the Soul Ring was opened and exposed. It’s a weapon, I thought. It had done in the corrupt London cop who tried to kill me, as well as the two British bigwigs who had tried to destroy London. I pointed my fist at Jayden’s back and thought about a laser putting a hole through her wing. The Soul Ring leaped to action. The jewel glowed white for an instant before firing off a quick line of energy, like a Star Wars blaster. It cut right through Jayden’s wing. She screamed in pain, then in fear as the ground raced for her. She hit with a wet thump. She unsteadily rolled to her feet and ran for the mansion. Screw it, I thought. We can catch her. I was already off at a run before my next thought was Who’s We? I was only a few feet behind Jayden as she made a running leap from the front steps of the manor house and into the hole where the main staircase used to be in the front room. I reached the same stairs and made the same leap. Much to my surprise, with the power of the clay armor, I all but flew from the bottom front step into the hole where the concrete stairs used to be. Jayden was only ten feet ahead of me and running for the portal. Without thinking, I fired the Soul Ring from the hip. I put a hole in Jayden’s right hip. She screamed and fell to the floor. She held the wound with her right hand. With her left, she reached out to crawl towards the raised platform, which, much to my surprise, was still there. Also to my surprise was the neat little man in the neat little suit, standing on the platform by the statue of Asmodeus. “Don’t bother, Jayden,” he said calmly. “He’s got you.” Jayden cried out on pain and fear. “No! No!” I stepped forward casually and calmly. Normally, I would consider arresting a perp in her condition. But there would be no way to stop her by human means. I reached down and took her arm. “Let me help you up.” Jayden looked at me in startled confusion. So did the man on the platform. She took my hand, and I raised her to her feet. I grabbed her by both shoulders and carried her so her naked behind could sit on the edge of the platform. My clay-covered hands locked to her wrists as effectively as any handcuffs. “The way I see it,” I told her, “we have two options. We talk to the Vatican, and we keep you in the secret archives next to the Ark of the Covenant—” “That’s at the bottom of the Mediterranean,” the man in the suit corrected me. I gave him a look. He merely shrugged and waited for me to continue. “Or, you get sent back.” Jayden smirked at me and spat in my face mask. “To Hell with you, saint. I would rather spend my last days of existence in the darkest, foulest corners of Hell then let you try to exercise mercy with me.” The man in the suit calmly interjected, “Which is exactly what awaits her.” “I spit on you and all your kind. You! You who were allowed a choice. To serve or to rule. We get to serve, or we are damned. Damn you for your mercy. Damn you for your freedom. Damn you for—” I punched my right fist in her chest and fired the Soul Ring into where her heart should have been. I left a hole big enough to put my arm through. Jayden’s mouth hung open, her eyes wide in shock. She struggled for breath, but couldn’t draw in any. “Go home,” I said gently, then let go of her wrists. Jayden slowly slumped back into the hole she created, and fell into the abyss. Without Jayden as the conduit, the concrete platform rebuilt from the edges, kaleidoscoping shut. There was the gentle sound of applause off to the side. The man in the suit clapped his delicate hands together. “Very well done, she didn’t even see it coming.” I gave him a look and was about to ask him who he was and why he was still unscathed… but then I saw that he was within two circles. One of them was of chalk. The other of them was of salt. The circles went around both him and the statue of Asmodeus. I looked at him and took a step back. “Yes. That’s right. They summoned me a few months ago and had no problem just leaving me here to consult.” “I thought she said that Asmodeus was going to rise within the hour.” The demon Asmodeus shrugged. “She was less literal. I’m not physical yet, Detective Nolan. I’m just … here.” From behind me, a voice called down, “Tommy! Are you all right?” I called over my shoulder, “Right here, Pearson. But I think you’re needed down here. We have to get rid of—” Asmodeus raised his hand. “Ah ah ah! Wait. You can use me, you know. I know things. I know many things. I know who your cult served. I know what’s coming next.”

Finn's creative genius continues to amaze me. His research and exploration of the types of horrible creatures/demons that have been identified by name/type for centuries is comprehensive. I stopped when I first started reading because of a female being in the role of evil--at that time, I wasn't able to read on. Too much had happened to women in America during the last near-decade. But later, remembering that I had already known about the female succubus, I was ready to read on... When you're writing horror, female versus male matters little when you're fighting evil...

So if you have not heard of this writer, let me be clear. His Horror is, for me, better than S. King. Why? Because of his main characters who are always on God's side! And, this writer does an excellent job in ensuring every single sentence is handled in a reverential manner, while exhibiting the magnificent power of God--think "Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20-21."

On a tour bus to Munich, Germany, a young girl, small even for her age, was among those passengers when the bus was stopped. Adara had been in the bathroom and listened as the monsters took control. Would they bypass looking in the bathroom. She pulled herself into the tiniest spot and held her breath, fearing even to breathe. And she waited, but then after it had been quiet for some time, "Click-Thump Click-Thump" and then she heard it stop near her. Suddenly a hand grabbed her ankles and dragged her away!

Back in Tennessee, Tommy had been awakened by his wife, calling that "her water had broken." Actually, he was happy to hear that it was not a call for action into a work situation--no demon to fight! And he proceeded to get up and help the love of his life. He and Jeremy got her to the hospital and started the long wait. Three hours had gone by and then Grace Gabrielle Nolan was born... Thankfully, because he had soon received a call from the Vatican...

And his wife, and son, now enjoying the new addition to the family, simply said, "Go. Be Secret Agent Saint. Come back to us. Got it?”

Now, why he was led away was for a somewhat strange request (at least for we readers). An important witness was dead, cursed by those who can do such a thing... And they wanted Tommy to bring him back to life! Yes, you read that correctly. Did I not say that there is nothing impossible with God? Even Tommy wasn't sure that he could do it--and surely didn't know how to begin to think about doing it! The ADA Carlton had a logical mind and decided that it could be done... Three days later, the witness walked into the courtroom to testify... And, Tommy admitted that all he had to do was pray for an hour, saying Please, Please quite often... You see, when a curse is placed on somebody, as his son spoke knowingly, “God does not let people die from demonic infestation or curses. The only physical harm can be what God wills. If this is a curse, and this man died from it, it’s because God allowed it.” He paused, frowned, and added, “Or he was involved in occult stuff. It left him open to it.” Mariel nodded. “Right.” I should point out that Jeremy considers his father a superhero and loves to explore exactly what powers God has given him...

So, with that miracle taken care of...

Tommy's Vatican contact had already scheduled him on a flight to Munich... Where Adara had been captured and brought as requested...and where we will meet the latest villain that is to be vanquished:

Adara screamed as she was dragged out from under her chair. The kidnapper loomed over her as Adara was raised right off the bus floor. It was a woman. A stunning, darkly beautiful woman with blood-red stiletto boots and hair that looked like it was on fire. “My, aren’t you the tasty looking one?” she said. She licked her lips with her exceptionally long tongue. Adara knew something was wrong, but it didn’t click until the kidnapper licked her lips again. Her tongue was forked. Adara screamed. Her kidnapper rolled her eyes and strode out of the bus, carrying Adara by the ankle in one hand.

People often say, "you can't make these things up..." Yet Declan Finn does it daily...

Tommy is rarely alone, there is often a priest traveling with him, along with vials of holy water and all other weapons that have been blessed for a holy war...of gigantic proportions! At first, it was thought that a ring of human traffickers were at work. That would have been easy to deal with. But the woman, Jayden, was a villain who also had demonic powers which she used to bring about what she wanted most of all: Power... and More Power!

Frankly I enjoy reading fiction in which the good guys always win... And with St. Tommy N.Y.P.D. is involved, there is no doubt that, no matter who--or--what is acting against God's Children. They will not Win! If you agree... This latest is extraordinary in the supernatural aspect when God acts through one of His chosen saints... Enjoy!

Meet Saint Tommy:NYPD in first in series: Hell Spawn: A Catholic Action Horror Novel by Declan Finn -

I can smell evil. I show mercy to the lesser criminals - the desperate. Even those I’ve put behind bars seem to like me. But now there’s a serial killer bringing darkness beyond imagination to my city. I can smell his stench a mile away. But how can I prove it?

How do you do forensics on a killer possessed by a demon?

Odd Saint  - My name is Detective Thomas Nolan, and I am a saint. This is neither boasting nor an exaggeration. I only had an inkling on the morning I chased Anthony Young, purse snatcher…again.  Kid was four years older than my son. Young Anthony (see what I did there?), a 20th time offender, had upgraded to double duty, on this day both snatching the purse as well as the iPhone of Malinda Jones.

Malinda was one of many careless New Yorkers who are so deep into their phones that they barely registered oncoming traffic, to heck with noticing a thief running up on them. My radar was already up after Anthony bumped against me as he brushed past. I didn’t bother checking for theft. I had nothing in the pockets of my tan overcoat, and my pants pockets were out of the reach of even a skilled thief.

I merely continued my morning offering as the Opus Dei had taught me and was about to go into the Our Father. Then Anthony charged forward, sweeping Malinda’s purse from her shoulder, and plucking the iPhone from her hand. It was the latest model, over a thousand dollars’ worth of technology in one easy-to-steal package.

Obviously, Anthony didn’t see the all-caps NYPD emblazoned in gold letters on the front AND back of my policeman-blue baseball cap. To make matters worse—for him—was that he did this in front of the mental health court for Queens, heralded by the black wrought-iron fence about ten feet high, which was serviced by the NYPD as their security. Further down the block was a housing community with its own private security. In short, there was no real way that Anthony was going to get to the end of the (admittedly very long) block. I was still under an obligation to chase the idiot.

“Freeze! Police!” I barked before I took off after him. As expected, it made him run faster, but he obviously heard me, so he had his fair warning. I pounded along the pavement behind Anthony, who was built for speed over anything else. He was short and slight, but he could run. I was bigger, a bit over six foot, and broad in the shoulders. Every big man will tell you one thing—running was just a great way to destroy your ankles and your knees if you do it right. I was a lumbering truck chasing after a motorcycle, but the moment Anthony ran out of gas, the impact would be similar.

As I ran, I mentally recited the Our Father and was on the Hail Mary when the strangeness happened. Suddenly, I could see myself ahead of Anthony… while at the same time, standing in front of him, I saw myself chase behind Anthony. It was a strange, vivid experience, with each view of Anthony as clear as the highest definition television—with almost more clarity than real life. It was odd, but I was also too busy to ponder it. I held out an arm, leaned into it, and Anthony just ran into my arm. He clothes-lined himself so hard, his feet left the ground. I swept back under him as fast as I could, catching him just before his head hit the concrete. It wouldn’t do for him to have brain damage over a stolen purse—it wasn’t like he had little gray cells he could afford to lose. I smiled into his face. “Hi Anthony. Would you like to tell me your rights? We’ve done this dance too often.”

He merely smiled widely and shrugged, even as I hauled him to his feet. “Eh, you win some, you lose some. Still ain’t gonna serve any jail time.” Anthony was a poster boy for juvenile recidivism and a great example for anyone who agitates for prosecuting all criminals as adults. He wasn’t necessarily a bad kid, but he could use an extended stay in Boys Town—or an overnight in Rikers Island to scare him straight.

“It would help if you won any,” I suggested.

“Can I cuff myself this time?” he asked as I took his wrists behind his back and cuffed them. “Guess not.”

I rolled my eyes. “Anthony, have you considered that if you want money, you get a real job?”

He laughed. “You mean work for a living? Hey, that’s racist, yo.” I shook my head and sighed. This kid was going to give me a headache.

“Meet me halfway, find a crime you’re at least good at?”

Malinda caught up to us at long last. She was 48, 4’9”, and 180 pounds, so it took her a while. She looked at the perpetrator and frowned. “Anthony Young! I should have known. Just wait until I tell your gramma! Wait until I tell Father Pawson!” Anthony finally looked concerned.

“Aw, come on, Missus Jones, do you have to? I didn’t know it was you.” Malinda wound up for a smack to the back of his head, and I twisted him around to put myself between them.

“Mrs. Jones, you can’t do that. I’ve got him cuffed already.”

Malinda glowered. “Fine. But you take him right to the station. I’m going to meet you there. Taking my stuff. How dare you, Anthony!” She stormed off ahead of us, not even waiting for me to hand her stuff back. I pocketed her phone and slung the purse over my shoulder—it was big enough to be a satchel, if worse came to worse.

“How’d you get in front of me, anyway?” he asked. “I don’t remember you being that fast.”

I blinked. That was a good question, to which I didn’t have a good answer. I had heard that deja vu was simply a matter of slow communication between two halves of the brain. Perhaps it was serious brain lag? No, that explanation didn’t even work for me at the time, but since I didn’t have a good answer for him, I merely told him the truth: “I haven’t the foggiest notion.”

~~~
You know, it's kinda difficult to think that you're reading a horror novel when you keep smiling and thinking of this as a spoof. You know, something like ghost busters, the theme that kept coming into my mind as I read... But Tommy Nolan, NYPD, was not chasing ghosts--he was a legit New York police officer who walked the streets of New York, and sometimes ran after those who break the law...
The first thing you learn about Tommy is that, while he is running, he is saying prayers, Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee; blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. ...now and at the hour of our death....then starting, the Our Father... Seriously, I kid you not... I had heard of the need to "pray without ceasing..." but I never really had a real notion of how that could happen... But, then, I'm not a Saint-in-training...
Of course, Tommy did not consider himself a saint, nor even one in training, since most saints are named "after" death... But, I've told you too often about God Incidents happening, not to be willing to believe that this man was, indeed, doing God's work! Even if he was a character in a book...lol!
(By the way, I watched a few Hallmark movies over the last few days and several were referred to as Godwink movies. Well, of course, they meant the same as my favorite saying God Incidents...Still, it was fun to see others have realized that there were sometimes things that happened that were too clearly more than coincidence!)
Now, Tommy suddenly had a gift, that wasn't too pleasant...he could smell something that smelled worse than rotten... He could smell evil... And he smelled it when he got back to the station to again arrest young Anthony... As soon as he got there, Tommy smelled something rancid...and he had to find out what it was!
And it led to:
The source was what most civilians would picture as a “typical” junkie—the type who has obviously hit bottom, He was anemic, malnourished, scrawny, and painfully underweight. At 5’8”, he may have weighed all of one hundred pounds. His hair was black, stringy, and greasy, and his eyes were a pale, watery blue. I couldn’t tell if he was about to cry or bite someone’s nose off … or just curl up into a ball and die, since he looked close enough anyway. Sunken cheeks, protruding cheekbones, and he hurt to look at. His hands were cuffed behind his back, but the elbows were so bony, I was concerned he could stab someone with those alone. And he smelled like death, decay, and made the stench of garbage trucks smell sweet in comparison. “Okay, Hayes,” one of the officers told him, “you’re almost done. You can be in your cell in a bit.” As I approached Hayes, he started, his back becoming ramrod straight. He turned to look at me. His face went from being passive and wishy-washy to a mask of rage.  He roared loud enough to hurt my ears and make the cops around him flinch. With a loud crack, his arms shot forward. He’d dislocated his left thumb to get out of the cuffs. He grabbed the nearest policeman, hurling him across the room with maniacal strength. The cop slammed into a desk, then smashed through a window. The cop behind him grabbed on, and the perp whirled, smacking him aside. He grabbed the cop’s nightstick, and cut the leg out from under the officer... Hayes whirled on me, bellowing, “Era uoy tahw wonk I!” Then he lunged.
And that's when Tommy met his first...demon... A chase like no other begins when the demon moves from body to body to outrun Saint Tommy!
My first read by Finn, A Pius Man, took readers into the Vatican and I thoroughly enjoyed those novels by this author... He has become a prolific novelist and moves from one genre to another without any trouble. Using the Catholic Church often, he places those with deep faith into fantastically, sometimes supernatural, action. Indeed Tommy Nolan will learn of God's gifts to him as he tackles a demon who can live in and move from one person to another... And the only way to track him was by Tommy's ability to identify evil...by its smell! Imagine trying to write up a report on each of those attempted arrests! Seriously it's fun to watch as God gives chase through humans!
Do check out others reviews for Finn's books here at Book Readers Heaven... Use his name for a search and you'll have a list going back to 2013 with his Pius Series! Finn includes his own opinions re the abortion issue, so if you cannot deal with a different opinion from your own, pass this one by...rather than give it a low rating as some have done.
Fortunately I don't have to choose, but I have to admit that the hint of humor in meeting the Saint Tommy Character has shown just how Declan's writing has soared into big time in the last decade! I loved this first book and already have the second one! And, whether or not you already know that God CAN move mountains, the climax of this story will give you a great way to consider just how His miracles could work...if you were a saint...in...training... Do check this one out!
God Bless,
Gabbie
Live and Let Bite by Declan Finn Continues Extraordinary Series
Prologue: Dear Amanda San Francisco, September
Marco Catalano sat down at his laptop and started to compose an email. For a man who had just gone toe-to-toe with a demon with as much worry as the average citizen might have against a mugger, the email terrified him out of all proportion.
Dearest Amanda, I have a secret to tell you. Not too surprising, is it? My very smile must appear to be a mask at times. In fact, I have two secrets to tell you. Neither may surprise you. Or both will. Though which would surprise you, or surprise you more, I couldn’t begin to say, or guess. After all, if there’s anyone who knows me better than my father or my confessor, it would be you. I’ve told you before about the night I lost Lily for the first time. Yes, it was before I met you, but I think I told that story vividly enough. It was a mugging. The man held me at knifepoint, and I killed him. I told you the truth in that I did have to kill him. I made a mess of it. What could have been a quick disable or kill turned into a bloody mess in more ways than one. I hurt him. And I kept on hurting him until he stopped moving. What I didn’t tell you is that I liked hurting him. I liked making him suffer. I enjoyed making him bleed and die. In short, Amanda, I am a bit of a monster.
You need blood to live, and you have only killed when you needed to, but I’m the one who enjoys it. I enjoy the stab, the slice, the twist of the knife. However, I’ve been made aware that I might not be quite so insidious and monstrous a human being as I thought. Apparently, my time in prayer and church and confession may not be 100% for naught.
My second secret is at the same time both much more innocent, yet much creepier at the same time, given secret #1.
I love you, Amanda. That is my big secret. It sounds stupid to say it, but I love everything about you. I really do. I love your accent. I love your hair. I love your smile. I love how smart you are. I love how you think. I love your eyes, and the way they sparkle. I like just being around you. And I like who I am when I’m around you. Do you remember what I said to you in the graveyard as we “pretended” to make out and profess our love to each other, so we could bait the other vampires? I wasn’t pretending. Everything I said to you was true. Everything I did, I meant. I honestly can’t imagine what your reaction is going to be to this. You could go either way. The best outcome is if you also meant what you said that night,
and we have both been too dense to identify what was said as truth. The worst case, I cannot begin to contemplate. No matter what, Amanda, I will always love you. Marco
Live and Let Bite
By Declan Finn
Merle was heading back to San Francisco and wanted Marco to go with him, offering him the opportunity to go on with his degree program to become a physician's assistant.
The main reason Marco was considering it was to try to separate himself from Amanda, as he was still unable to believe that he was worthy of her love...
And then, of course, Merle was facing an invasion of vampires with little backup and Marco knew his need was dire... Merle had a magic shop in San Francisco and had several employees there who he thought would probably help him, but that was it. The FBI wanted him to deal with the weird stuff that was happening, but they really didn't want to acknowledge that Merle was FBI...
Merle wanted Marco to slowly become involved, not wanting his staff to believe he was replacing one of their own, who had been killed. So he went on about his studies and met one of the team, who immediately hooked on to Marco. She was a caregiver and immediately tried to take Marco under her wing... And so, the merge began to happen and Marco took part in early battles...
While that was going on, Marco missed Amanda more than he had believed possible and on a lonely night, he wrote her an email, pouring out his heart to her, admitting his great love... and more about him... By then, Marco had been greatly affected by meeting a stranger in the last book, who explained much to him...about how God might be seeing what Marco was doing...
But even though email is very fast...if nobody reads that mail, the time it takes to send it matters little, except to the sender who does not even consider that his mail has not been delivered. Marco slowly began to come apart, thinking that Amanda could not accept what he'd shared with her. He wrote more often, never receiving any response.  And never even considering that Amanda had been too busy working to read any of her email... If you're a fan of Scorpion like me, you'll know how Walter O'Brien gets when he's jealous and depressed...
He sat at the bar of the club, and wondered if he shouldn't burn the place down. It wasn't a vampire haven, but it was a stalking ground. That wasn't the reason he wanted to burn the place down, but he thought it would be a good idea on general principles. Flashing lights and loudly deafening noises weren't his idea of a good time. He preferred some nice music in the background as he read a book.
Heck, had the music even been something good, like Nightwish or Dragonforce, he might not have minded the volume (okay,
 some Dragonforce songs at maximum volume, would probably lead to bleeding eardrums, but that would still have been preferable).
He chuckled. Not that I'm a snob or anything...
Someone touched him on the arm, and he turned. The blonde was utterly stunning. Marco's face didn't even shift a little, and he made certain to look at her lips. "Hi there."
She gave him a toothy grin. "You're cute."
He leaned into her, almost so that he could put his lips to her ear. "Could you repeat that?" he asked at normal volume.
Unseen by anyone else, his left hand drew out a syringe. The needle was thin enough to be barely felt by most people, but sharp enough to penetrate most clothing. As he spoke in her ear, he stuck her in the belly and injected the contents straight into her abdomen.
The woman stopped blinked, jerked, and tore off for the bathroom.
She never came out.
He sighed, and shook his head.
The bartender looked at him. "You scare off another one? What do you say to them, dude?"
Marco Catalano shrugged, his smile still amused. Fifty CCs of Holy Water into the guts of a vampire. "No idea."
~~~

But soon, all that Marco had been doing in New York had caught up with him in San Fran...and another assassin had been sent to rid the world of this extraordinary human who even vampires did not want to look into his eyes... But this time they'd sent an assassin that was sent to kill other vampires! They called her "The Slayer..." And this time, she had two targets: Marco...and...Amanda!

And Amanda had come to San Francisco! And, no, she hadn't read Marco's emails...but she came to him...

San Francisco Amanda and Marco were still embracing outside the club when they heard a voice in the dark say, “It’s about to get worse.” The two of them turned. Amanda blinked. “Merle?”
Merle Kraft came out of the shadows, his hair a mess and his jacket in tatters. “Listen, it’s not safe here. For either of you. I think there’s been a hit put out on you in the vampire underworld.”

Marco blinked a moment, and then laughed, long and loud and hard. Merle raised a brow. “I was attacked outside of the UN building by a very tall redhead.” Amanda started. Her eyes narrowed. “Redhead? That sounds like the vampire who killed Mikhail the Bear in Brooklyn.” Marco and Amanda exchanged a look. Suddenly, she tensed, and then jumped onto him. “Down!”
Amanda dragged Marco to the ground as a light metal spear sped through the air where they had stood. It impacted against a dumpster and went through, knocking it over. Amanda and Marco rolled apart, the vampire taking a stake from Marco’s jacket, the PA student slipping two from his sleeves. They came to their feet facing the same direction, feet apart, left arm outstretched as a shield, stakes ready to kill. Marco held his with the points toward the thumbs, and Amanda held hers upside down in her hand like a commando.
The next missile came right at Amanda through the shadows. Amanda grabbed it, spun, and used its momentum to toss it back at the attacker. A shape darted out, leaping out at Amanda over the spear. A mop of long red hair framed the face of the most hideous vampire she’d ever seen, and two glowing green viper’s eyes.

Her first move was a swipe at Amanda’s hand. The strike made Amanda’s arm go numb and the stake fly into the wall, where it shattered on impact. Amanda ducked in time for the backhand to soar over her head and punched for her opponent’s stomach…
And into the waiting hand. The vampire grabbed her hand, threw Amanda against the far wall of the alley, and was ready to leap atop Amanda to finish the job.
Marco casually took aim and threw his blade as he dropped forward into a roll. With a blur, the vampire caught the knife and hurled it back at him with deadly accuracy, without looking. Marco would have been dead had he remained standing for even a split second longer. The splinters embedded themselves into the wall.
Marco’s roll brought him to the vampire’s feet, and he jammed both stakes into her flesh, one in her thigh and one in her side. He had two impact-firecrackers taped to the sides, and they went off when they pressed against her flesh, igniting the stakes and setting the vamp aflame.
By that time, Marco had already bounced away, running for Amanda, leaving the vampire for dead… even as she rolled to put the fire out. Marco slid to his knees, stopping at Amanda’s side. He grabbed her shoulders and shook her firmly. Amanda’s eyes snapped open, and she leapt, grabbed him, rolled over him and threw one of his stakes into the vampire’s back.
Marco briefly wondered why she bothered if the other vampire was on fire… then he noticed that the vamp was no longer flaming. The vampire stopped moving and dropped to her staked knee. Both of her hands went for the stake protruding from her heart. Merle made his move, and led with a flying spin kick that knocked her head back and dropped her onto the ground. She blinked, as though she hadn’t even felt it. All of her concentration was focused on the stake as she slowly drew it out of her heart and rolled to her side.
Marco and Amanda looked at each other. “That doesn’t happen, does it?”
“No,” she answered.
“This is bad, then, right?”
“You betcha.”
The vampire turned, ripping both stakes from her lower body. Marco dropped, dragging Amanda with him as the stakes flew overhead, shattering brick and mortar. Merle jumped in again and the vampire tossed him aside, slamming him against a brick wall. Marco reached for the small of his back and drew out a water pistol. The attacking vampire became a cloud of mist, and swooped in under the stream of water, and came up, ripping the pistol from Marco’s hand.
Without blinking, Amanda grabbed Marco, ripping two stakes from the inside of Marco’s jacket
and threw one straight for the assassin.
The vampire smacked it aside and it shattered. The two women were only yards apart when Marco put himself between them, rosary wrapped around one hand, and cross held up in the other. The vampire smiled and stopped two feet away, leveling her glowing green eyes on Marco. “You think just holding those will hurt me?” she hissed in a brogue.
“No.” Marco slammed the fist with the rosary wrapped around it into her nose, a hiss accompanying it, then slapping her with the flat side of the crucifix. “I expect that to hurt.”
The vampire staggered a little, shaken. The center of her face was smoking, and audibly sizzling, and so was the side of her face. It looked like she had been branded by both hits. “I’ll be seeing you,” she snapped before she ran so fast, she might as well have evaporated.
Marco turned, saw Amanda was all right, then looked at Merle, slowly rising to his feet. "Thanks a lot."
Kraft shrugged. “I tried to warn you. I’ve been running from this creature for the last few days, and I’m tired. Besides, I would’ve brought a squirt gun, but those post-9/11 security dweebs at the airport confiscated it. They didn’t find my sharpened stakes, but they took my squirt gun.”
Marco nodded absently. “We need to find the others in case they’re in trouble.”

Merle had been back doing his own work, since Marco had moved to San Francisco... Why Merle and other even took an exciting trip to Afghanistan--yes, vampires were there too! It was there that he'd discovered materials with the symbol of the United Nations and knew he had to get it out of the country and learn more!

But he hurried back, with his investigation leading toward the UN and he'd been attacked by The Slayer! Something big was going on and obviously extra help for the vampires had been called in... He got there just in time to warn Marco and Amanda, but not early enough for them to be able to prepare--any more than they always were, that is...

And with both attacking The Slayer (I thought you might enjoy one of the fight scenes from the book), was defeated and ran... But that was definitely not the end! Be prepared for escalation of the war waged by one woman and her minions, against those who battle for good! Wow, readers will begin to believe that nobody is going to come out alive in this war!

But... Well, you'll just have to read it to believe it! Sure would make an exciting, unbelievably fantastic movie to see the action described. In fact, I wonder whether the action could actually be done since it is sooo farrrr outttt! What a story! I know one thing...I'm not ready to give up on this series until I know exactly who and what Marco Catalano is!

Thinking about the content, it is my opinion, that each book can stand alone as an exciting action novel. Read all three - they are highly recommended...

Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong...
Murphy's Law

April 16th, 2: 15AM. Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY
Amanda Colt was dead, and Marco Catalano looked like he had been through a war. Both were technically true. The battle for Mount Olivet and for Greenpoint had been surprisingly quick affairs, but had left hundreds if not thousands dead on the streets of New York City. It helped with the cleanup that most of those who died had already been dead – namely, vampires.

“I go to mass.”
“And?”
“Since I mentioned that our physical character is related to our spiritual character, I go frequently. I think I may qualify as a mystic, but I’m not sure, I haven’t asked my confessor about this. Technically, that makes me stronger, so I can go without real
blood for a week or two.”

“And?”

“I get most of my blood from the Sacred Blood in the chalice at mass. I’m usually the last one up, so I finish the cup.”

Merle studied Marco a moment.
 Despite being beaten, bruised,
 and broken, he still had the
 distinct impression that he would,
 indeed, hunt down anyone who
 took an action against Amanda.
 He would protect her,
anywhere, anytime,
no matter his condition.

Amanda Colt was a vampire, and thus already dead – but she looked more dead than usual when she came flying back through the air, impacting on the Brooklyn street with a sick sound that was a cross between a splat and a crunch.
Marco, despite having had his left leg and his right arm broken by Mikhail the Bear in single combat, tried to move towards her fallen form. After a brief effort, he growled deep in his throat.
“Damnit. Merle, check her pulse.” The Eurasian government agent still had his weapon up, but whatever it was had vanished.
“Pulse?” he asked, confused.
Marco felt his pulse spike. There wasn’t time to explain this! Amanda bounced off the ground, her face a mask of rage and fangs, shouting in rage at the rooftop. “The suki tossed me! That… I’ll get you for this!”
Merle raised a brow and holstered his gun. “She’s too far to hear you.”
“I can hear gun fire from the Bronx. Trust me, she hears.”
She turned to Marco, and carefully rolled him over onto his back. She cradled his head in her lap. Marco closed his eyes, and just enjoyed the feel of her body heat through her jeans. Before I met her, If someone had told me that body temp was the perfect surface to rest on, I would have told them they were mad.
“I think we can heal this,” Amanda said, in her cute Russian accent. “But I’ll need to set the bone, okay?”
Marco gave it a moment’s thought. The microbes in her bite would help him heal the breaks in a matter of days, if not hours, but it was still going to hurt like a bastard. “Sure, why not?”
The door to the brownstone opened, and Marco’s father, Doctor Robert Catalano, came out, with the Vatican Ninja and sniper, Ibrahim Javaherian, at his side. “I’ll do the setting,” Robert said, “if you don’t mind.”
Merle sighed. The government agent who specialized in odd seemed impatient. “Whatever. Well, it looks like my lead is dead, in more ways than one. Marco, why did you want me to check Amanda for a pulse? Habit?”
Amanda smiled brightly – Damn, Marco thought, I would kill for that smile – and she said, “Nyet. I have a pulse. I also have a fully-working metabolism. My body doesn’t need to pump blood, but I have it do so, mainly to keep everything working. I may want to have children some day.”
Merle gave a smirk.
Marco tried to read it, but couldn’t. “You need food?”
Amanda: “At least blood. I don’t know why, but we need it. I tried going without, it’s not a pretty sight.”
Marco nodded, completely ignoring his father examining his broken leg. “I think it’s a version of porphyria, mixed with a touch of inverse progeria.”
Merle arched a brow. “In English?”
“Progeria is a disease that makes someone age at four times the normal rate of speed; ten-year-olds looking like they’re forty, and physically, they are.” With a quick pull from Doctor Catalano, Marco screamed. It was almost more of a surprise than anything else. He had been so focused on the conversation, he felt more an echo of pain than anything else. Marco gritted his teeth. “Porphyria is what King George III had, driving him insane— a cure for that is the ingestion of human blood, which is where part of the myth of vampirism comes from. We figure that the microbial symbiotes that are responsible for vampirism somehow feed off of fresh, living blood, like porphyria.”
“However, there’s her ability to elongate her teeth,” Marco added. “It really irritates me, because she always has an unfair advantage at bobbing for apples.”
The vampire brushed a strand of hair from his forehead. “I do not know what you’re talking about. I would never use them for such a thing.”
“Then how come you always need to floss out your canines for the next week afterwards?” he objected. His father had his arm and pulled. Marco screamed again. “I suck out the filling from some of the chocolates,” Amanda continued, as though Marco had just had his back cracked by a masseuse, not his bones set. “It is either that, or I eat diabetics for dessert, and you remember what happened to old Tiberius when he drank from too many.”
“Yeah, his teeth rotted out. He should’ve known better than to drink people with too high a blood sugar without brushing.” Doctor Catalano gave a quick pull at Marco’s arm, setting the break. Marco grimaced and gritted his teeth this time, despite the pain. “Just because he’s dead doesn’t mean he can forgo the basics.”
Merle snickered at the surrealism of it all. “So, Amanda, since you are who you eat, whom do you generally eat?”
Marco and Amanda looked at each other for a moment. “I sometimes give donations,” he explained. “The rest of the time… you can answer it...”
Merle looked out over at the gang members, the Mafia, the cops, and the Vatican ninjas, who all seemed interested in making certain no one had been eaten during the fracas. “What about them? I can assume they didn’t know about your girlfriend before now, did they?”
“I’ll talk to them,” Marco said, eyes cold. “If any of them decide to do something unwise, I will know, and they will answer to me.”
Merle studied Marco a moment. Despite being beaten, bruised, and broken, he still had the distinct impression that he would, indeed, hunt down anyone who took an action against Amanda. He would protect her, anywhere, anytime, no matter his condition. “Fair enough.” He glanced at the ground where Mikhail used to be. “I guess this is all over then.”
Marco let out a sharp, sudden laugh. “You’re kidding right?”
Merle motioned to the street littered with empty clothes and dusted vampires. “You call this… what?” Marco tried to sit up, but Amanda pressed down on his shoulders to hold him in place. “Do not move.” Marco sighed, then looked at Merle. “I call this a retaliatory strike. This isn’t over. Obviously, Mikhail didn’t like us messing up his most ambitious nesting plans, slowing him down and cutting into his personnel. He went after the FBI, and when we made a move on him, he struck back.”
 “Yes,” Merle concluded, “but if he was being slowed down, that means that he was building up to something.”
Marco smiled. “Give the man a cigar. Whatever they were doing at the United Nations, whatever you were looking into, Mikhail was in charge of manpower.”
“What?” Amanda cut in.
“We just killed the head of human resources. We have no idea who that redhead was that killed Mikhail just when he was about to talk.”
Merle’s mouth twitched. “Aw hell. You’re saying this is just starting.”
“You’re not the one in pieces on the ground,” Marco muttered. “Now, if you don’t mind, I think Amanda and I can use some alone time.”
Merle arched a brow. So did Doctor Catalano, and so did Ibrahim Javaherian. Marco frowned and looked at all of them. “Get your minds out of the gutter. If she bites me, I get a hit of her virus. The first time she bit me, I could throw manhole covers. We can see if this will fix me up.”
Amanda carefully moved, then picked up Marco as though he weighed about twenty pounds. “Do not worry. I will be happy to bite you.”

Murphy's Law of Vampires

By Declan Finn

For whatever reason, vampires have remained a magical creature that has remained popular in literature. I had given up on the topic for many years, but I must say that I've totally enjoyed the Love at First Bite Series by Declan Finn.

There is none of the usual about Finn's books. They are unique, exciting, and mystical, with all types of strange and weird happenings that can't help but capture readers' attention.

For instance, the main character, Marco Catalano is a student studying to become a physician's assistant. To date, readers are stilllll not sure exactly what type of superior being he is, but he seems to be indestructible, or rather, self-healing... His intellect is at the genius level and his logic combined with his ethics create a formidable enemy against all things evil...

Note that I didn't say all who are vampires...

You see, vampires are not all evil, including the main female character, Amanda Colt is a vampire who is good, spends much time in church, and depends upon the Holy Communion--the blood of Christ--as a major source of her food.

Marco and Amanda have become close friends since they combined their efforts in ridding their city of bad vampires.

Amanda looked at him… strangely, was the only word he had for it, as though she were searching for something in his eyes.
“I can stay longer, if you want me to.” Would it be possible for her to be interested in him? Personally? Emotionally? Though she was about his age on a physical level, chronologically, she was old enough to be his grandmother. But his mother had never looked that good.
He smiled. “I’d like that… and if I time it right, our sleep patterns will match up.” He slid his other arm around her back, hugging her to him by the waist. They started walking towards his dorm. “So, what are you going to do when you go back to New York?”
~~~
Yes, there is much action and thrills during these endeavors. In fact, there are a number of super-bad monsters and this dynamic duo takes them on, winning every battle...so far...but not without damage, especially to Marco...
So, when this happens, Amanda delivers a little bite to him, sharing her powerful saliva to not only heal but give him a boost in the physical power he already has...
One of the key things about the book is the underlying sense of humor...yes, perhaps surprising in what is normally thought of as a horror novel. But the author has such a sense of humor, apparently, that it comes out in the oddest places and, instead of feeling horror, readers wind up smiling or laughing at what is happening--which is tearing limbs from bodies, and all those things monsters do during their killing activities... It feels almost like a farce, but you can't deny the true horror of the actual events... Quite an achievement, in my opinion...
Clearly the book is character driven as we meet an FBI agent who deals with weird--think Fox Mulder. His speed seems to be a super gift, or he's just practiced magic and appears out of the blue, a lot... Then there is the Catholic Priest who supports good, even vampires, and has a special team of Vatican ninjas and sniper who joins the fight when needed... Yikes, Marco has even made friends with all the street gangs and they support him to rid the streets of the vampires, who are their enemies too!
Another fighter, who plays just as an important warrior in their battles is Holy Water... I'm pretty sure that the Priest must provide his blessings over water barrels to keep enough of it available!😇 Seriously, the ingenuity in the plotting of the demise of a monster has been tediously presented in such fine detail that readers are caught up in the mastery of the thought processes attributed to the character Marco. I was impressed!
Speaking of monsters, one, Mikhail, had just been annihilated when another appeared, to finish off Marco and Amanda, in particular. And another shows up!
But there is another monster, one who has declared himself... Marco believes, because he loves destroying evil vampires, that he is also a monster. And that's important, because he has strong feelings for Amanda who, even though a vampire, is a very good person who only kills when she must. While Amanda believes...
Marco knew what was in his head. He was someone who enjoyed killing. He was a monster. A predator. Yes, even though Marco had a deep faith, and a deeper prayer life, both served to keep the creature within him in check. In the end, one of two things drove Mikhail from his mind. One was the prayer and his faith. But Marco knew, deep in his heart, that his dark side had driven Mikhail out of his head and saved his life. It was a part of him he was comfortable with, that he enjoyed, and that he didn’t want to give up. It was something that he couldn’t tell anyone about. It was why he couldn’t be with Amanda. She killed human beings for food. He did it for fun.
~~~

Well you get the picture. These two are in love, but continuously fight it off because of their love for the other... Actually, it's quite fun to watch and what could be better than a little strange, weird romance in a vampire novel?

I loved all the characters in the book, even the bad monsters... The book is fast-paced, full of action, a true page turner, with a laugh or two to lighten the blood-curdling events that just...don't...stop! A break in reality that won't give you nightmares...Cool! With one surprise character that leads toward the climax! Into vampires? You really need to check out this series!
