We All Must Walk Our Own Road...

Country RoadImage via Wikipedia
Ghellow Road

A literary diary of
a young girl's
journey

By T. H. Waters

There's no doubt that we each must walk our own life roads. For many, the roads run parallel to those walked by our family, our peers and while unique, we never learn the full story of that journey. The road traveled by T. H. Waters was not similar to ours. "Compelled to write this book based upon the unique experiences of her youth, she is grateful for the privilege of finally being able to live out loud." (p. 291)

Ghellow Road
Ghellow Road is Theresa's story, written in novel form. It flows from the time she was a child, happy with her mother and father and older brother. Her father was a teacher at a local school and spent much time with his children, sharing and exploring.

She was 5 when the first trauma occurred--finding her mother sobbing, her mother starting to withdraw from the family and their activities, spending most of her time in bed. However, when her mother needed to be hospitalized, it started a change of life for the entire family.

For a few times when her mother went to the hospital, her father's mother came to stay with them and take care that the children's life remain fairly stable. But a time came when that wasn't possible and both children were placed in foster care--the worst kind--where the parents were in it for the money and did little to actually care for the children.

Even when her mother came home, she was not the same woman. In fact, she had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and would never be the same again. "My mother...forever the delicate rose of spring, the youthful flower caught in a late, unexpected frost before she ever had the chance to unfurl her velvety petals and become the beauty she was meant to be. She remained eternally lost in the prison of her own mind...she remained eternally lost to me." (p. 263)

Fortunately for a number of years, their father was able to hold the family together. But then he lost his job, taking any job he could find to keep them going, but he also became despondent. He started spending all his time in the basement, forbidding anybody to invade the area where he said he was building a boat. Theresa one day coaxed her brother to go see the boat while their father was out. When he came back unexpectedly, Theresa childishly blamed their invasion on her brother. He was beaten horribly and soon left home, never to return.

And then Theresa's father committed suicide..."It is disturbing how the emotion from a single event, frozen in time, can conquer you so completely. It gnaws at your innards like a starved coyote, always wanting more than you have to give. We all became victims of Daddy's assault upon himself that day... A crucial piece of myself remained back in the bloody aftermath...slashing a wound that the hands of time would never be able to mend..." (P. 114)

And thereafter began a nomadic life for Theresa as she was shuffled from family to family or to friends' homes, rarely to have a location she could call her "home."

Readers will see a young woman who grew strong, yet defiant. One who was brave, yet afraid of what was going to happen next. Her story takes us through those traumatic teen years where finding and having friends to her meant the only family environments in which she was welcomed. Her mother had moved and left one grandmother behind, moving to live with and then near her parents. While her grandfather was wonderful, her new grandmother was not interested in developing a loving relationship with Theresa... And then her mother started dating and finally remarried. But that did not result in a new, loving home...

T. H. Waters writes her losses, her life, in beautiful words that compell readers to continue reading. However, this is not a heartwarming story even though there are parts that will touch your heart. This is a story of the spirit of children, of hope, of endurance... There is much you can learn from Ghellow Road if you open your heart and mind. Perhaps the most important being "to live out loud..." Highly recommended.

Start Children Drawing - Introduce Them to Stew!

Blitz IImage via Wikipedia
God Bless You, Stew
Just Line Around

Kinsy McVay

"A great way to teach young, creative minds one of the most basic, yet important elements of art and design while emphasizing the importance of positive self-esteem." (Intro) What's amazing about this book is that, in my opinion, the author has done just what he set out to do! Just Line Around...

First the play on words for the title is great. So while you're spending time with your child, why not introduce him to Stew. Stew is a line--a straight line____________________________. Yes, that kind of a line. Stew was just fine being a line____________________________________, until, one day,
Just Line Around
He hiccuped!

When I saw the above sample of lines I immediately thought that Stew Sneezed? What do you think?

The simplicity of this book is what makes it so exceptional. The concept of starting with just a line and moving, bumping, hopping, with that line, surely will be an easily accepted concept by which young children will begin to see...the potential...

How Cool is That?!

The book goes through a number of graphic line "glitches" but then goes on to draw a tree and even a masterpiece.

Stew even swirled around and around...until he was probably dizzy!

For somebody who has absolutely no talent, except maybe to draw stick figures,  I could see quickly that by starting with just Stew as he...drew... was a delightful way to develop creativity and solidify imagination.

Since I spent quite a lengthy period of my life in facilities management with lots of line drawings, it was quite natural for me to realize that Just Line Around could even lead to professional careers--engineering, graphic arts, architects!

Certainly, if your child has shown an interest in any type of artistic endeavors you will see the potential impact of their meeting Stew!

Highly recommended for consideration by the right parents! You'll know who you are just by spending creative play time with your children.

Author John Hohn Shares Loss of Friend With Us...

1 Lazy persian catImage by Magnus BrĂ¥th via Flickr

Eulogy for Nickie

My wife knew why
I walked over to the chair
By the dining room window
That faced the morning sun.
“I brushed away all the hair from the seat,”
She said.
So gone
Was any trace
Of your final, enfeebled days.
We could lay aside our concerns
About your deafness –
You watched our shoes
Whenever we approached --
And how your eyes teared,
Pupils wide in daylight
Like curtains pulled aside
On a vacant room.
You were content
Only when we held you
Swaddled,
Or when you napped
On the needle point cushion
Of the sunny chair--
Your handsome Persian profile
Calling to mind your vigorous days
Among the leaves
In a back yard wind,
Or nestled
At the base of the embracing oak

When days passed without a scolding
For our tardiness with your dish,
We knew
You were only wandering out a reluctance--
So many soft, careful steps--
As if to let us know,
You, too, felt the burden,
Impending departures always bring,
Of leaving us to ourselves alone--
And of the grief that would seep
Into simple daily tasks
In a home
Echoing with raw fresh emptiness
.
It was the right thing to do,
We both knew,
And when she returned,
From the Vet’s,
My wife looked me right in the eye
And said, “I can still feel his warmth
On the bottom of the box.”
I took the carton from her,
Accepting the last of your dearness
Faintly into my palms,
And I bowed down over you
Clenching my grief
In my teeth.

Forensic Entomologist "Bug Man" Series Gains New Fan!

A blow fly (Sarcophaga sp)Image via Wikipedia
Forensic entomologist Nick Polchak lives
in a world of maggots and blow flies
 and decomposing bodies.
No wonder he’s still single.
But Nick has finally found a woman
 as strange as he is—
dog trainer Alena Savard,
a woman who can seemingly talk to animals,
a person so odd and reclusive
that some think she must be a witch.
It was a match made in heaven.

Nick of Time:
A Bug Man Novel

By Tim Downs

One of the ways you could tell if I personally enjoyed a new book and author is to check if I buy more of his books... I just added all of the Bug Man series to my shopping cart! I'm a forensics science fan from years back...

Nick of Time has a surprise ending, for both readers...and for some of the characters! How cool is that! I knew I wanted to go back and read more about the bug man! Ok, for those who will wonder, yes, he reminds me of Grissolm. For me that is a good thing since we lost Grissolm on TV, so you, also, might want to meet Nick Polchak...

Nick of Time (A Bug Man Novel)
Nick Polchak is going to be married. To Alena Savard. Alena trains dogs but also saves them from being destroyed. She lives on a mountain alone with those dogs, and has been there since she was 10, having only the local minister and his wife as caregivers. Not a witch; she's definitely a dog whisperer...

She's perfect for Nick...

And for Nick that decision, once made, is no longer taking up much thinking time. So when he is specifically requested by one of his friends to attend the next Vidocq meeting, a group of forensics professionals who would meet to solve cold cases or special cases presented to them by local police offices, he sees no problem in going even though their wedding is scheduled for that coming Saturday. Nick's friend was working on a cold case and had explained that he needed a bug man to help figure the final details out.

Nick promises to call Alena at 9:00 PM, setting a specific time because Alena must come down off of her mountain to be able to use her new cell phone. Problems begin when:

Nick's friend doesn't show up at the Vidocq meeting and he decides to visit his home. There he discovers that he has been murdered... Sooooo, Nick "later" enters the home, even though there is no admittance through crime tape, and is soon arrested.

Thus, he is not able to call Alena as promised...

Once Nick gets out of jail, he decides he must investigate his friend's murder. He believed it was likely that the cold case he had been working on was what led to his murder, so naturally he started working on that case... The trail leads him into the Poconos. One contact is made by Nick, to the minister, so that Alena at least becomes aware of where he is--in the Poconos, where they are supposed to go Saturday--but on their honeymoon! You're right, on the second night gone, he also cannot place a call at 9:00!

So while Nick is doing a great job of investigating, Alena is fuming, but then begins to doubt Nick's love and commitment. Will he be there for the wedding Saturday? Well, she wasn't going to wait to find out. She chose three dogs--a tracker, a cadaver dog, and one for protection--and got in her truck and headed for the Poconos!

There is an underlying wit in Downs' writing that is contagious. And when you have Nick and Alena together as a couple, you just cannot thoroughly enjoy the similarities, yet many differences, that forged their relationship. Let's just say that the bug man knows insects much better than women. Until, perhaps, it is too late?

A little humor, a great story, murder mysteries, wonderful human and animal characters, and a chance to learn more about forensic science and entomology in particular... What more could you want? Highly recommended!

Town Destroyed by...Green Goop and Slime!

goopImage by zen via Flickr
Green goop and slime
destroyed everything in its path...

Shades of Green

By Ian Woodhead

I made an exception for this book--I normally don't review books with many errors, but because I was unable to read due to a period of vertigo which prevented my reading and contacting the author earlier, I made a special effort to overlook the typos, which didn't disturb the reading too badly. The major issue is the lack of scene differentiation and the lack of highlighting dream sequences. Only one dream in the entire novel was in italics, followed by the character waking up...which worked really well. Others have already gone into these issues in their reviews, so I'll just close with,,,

I found it difficult not to keep reading if you first make the decision to not be critical of errors as you read. The book was good enough for a full 5 ranking, but got a 4 because... I hope the author considers a new edition because horror fans are bound to enjoy this book.

Deep in the woods near a small country village, there was a hole in the ground which led to a room that had been there for thousands of years. But what was there in that room was disturbed, and awoke, one day...

Two older boys were chasing younger boys. The older boys called it fun...The younger boys were afraid! And when one of the boys fell into that hole during the chase, he was hurt and his blood flowed out...awakening that which was there...

The other young boy was traumatized and was immediately changed. In order to appease that which now controlled him, he pushed his mother down that hole... He left town, but had been kept in a drug-induced coma for many years.

The next time--three small boys were involved; two were killed and one had been found alive in a bag, never to be the same again. He, too, had changed. His name was Alan and he lived in a small home with his mother and younger brother Damien. It was a loving family, but Damien definitely felt the change since his older brother had been such a wonderful friend, as well, in the past.

And then the body of one of the boys was found...

As if the earth could no longer accept all that had happened in that little town's wooded area, it had regurgitated the body...and the corruption began to spread... Ernest, the boy in the coma was soon back in town...

Dreams of what was happening started for both Alan and Damien and oftentimes readers will feel like a scene is repeating, while the dream is foretelling of what is coming...

It began with mushrooms growing and spilling spores into the air, trees taking on aggressive actions, using limbs to capture flying creatures and their trunks to hold captives like they were glued. Then people started to be infected or bitten and spider eggs laid in bodies while others were turned into monsters who preyed on other humans, becoming cannibals..

All living plants and insects were infected. Soon the wood of buildings began to deteriorate as blood became slime and slowly merged into green goop that destroyed everything in its path... What didn't die became a ravenous monster.

This book is not about the characters. It is almost continuously one horror scene after another, either through a dream, as as it actually happens...Because every dream that Damien had is coming true...and he's running for his life! Not for light stomachs and I recommend you don't read at night! LOL This is scary good as the Chiller channel says...A horror lover's delight!

Get Those Dogs Out of Our Home!
Dog Tails:
Three Humorous
Short Stories for Dog Lovers

By Tara Chevrestt

Spending a little time with dogs is difficult in my home. My Cats don't tolerate dogs visiting, so I was glad to have the opportunity to read about them--or should I say to meet them and hear their stories? For each of the three dogs share their story personally to readers. No editing by owners either, I could tell, because each had a different view of that human with whom he lived!

Take for instance, Lola, who is a Pekingese.
Dog Tails: Three Humorous Short Stories for Dog LoversOr at least she once was until her disgruntled mother got it into her head to "wish" to trade places with Lola for a day...I don't know which was funnier, but if I'm made to choose, I think the human female trying to walk on four legs and not being able to talk was the winner.

After all, Lola was very intelligent and even if she awoke alongside her human father, and had quite a different body, she seemed to grasp what had happened much more quickly and get to the most important thing first...having as many dog biscuits as she wanted for breakfast...

Mommy's husband was not too thrilled with the available food though...

"Thank Dog it’s Friday" is the story of the strangest experience Lola ever had!

But then there is "Pugnacious" who is not quite happy when she is called Pudgy, which happens to be her given name, declaring that she is not fat! Her person is quite nice, though, especially since she bakes dog cookies and has Pudgy as her first taster.

Pudgy won me over with her adventure story about saving the day when a dog and his owner visited the bakery and attempted a robbery. She didn't mind the green stuff that was demanded, but when all the cookies were to be bagged up as well, Pudgy knew she had to act quickly!

But I think my heart went to Jazzy, a Japanese Chin, who on her way (unwillingly) to the groomer for a haircut, decided to run for it...but wound up saving an old blind lady! Now you have to admit, that's the top tail, right?

Readers, this is the type of book you buy just to have it for those days when you want to pick up something to read to take your mind away from something unpleasant. You know those days, right? I promise that by the time you finish reading even one or all of the stories, you will be smiling and feeling better! What more could you ask!

But...please, don't tell any of my cats the book is here in my cabin...I lose more books to those cats' claws! Ahhh...just kidding... Bring some fun into your life with Dog Tails!
