Welcome to BOOK READERS HEAVEN! Books, Reviews, Short Stories, Authors, Publicity, a little poetry, music to complement...and other stuff including politics, about life... "Books, Cats: Life is Sweet..."
On May 31st, 2015, I announced here that this book, Justice in the Round was going to be featured for the next week... One of the pictures I used was not used as a header for some reason--it was a picture during the Civil Rights Movement...It was still a problem even, as now, it's worse...
Check it out if you haven't read the book--or consider as a review and comparison of today's world... many excerpts
Copyright law was initially designed to strike a balance between rewarding creators for their work and allowing the public to use those works in the long term freely. However, in an age where creative output is more valuable than ever—both culturally and economically—the expiration of copyrights can undermine the very people who brought these works into existence. Making copyrights permanent for creators would ensure that their intellectual property remains theirs forever, safeguarding both their legacy and their livelihood.
At its core, copyright is about recognizing and protecting the moral rights of creators. A painting, novel, song, or film is not just a product—it is an extension of the creator’s identity, skill, and vision.
Permanent ownership respects the principle that a creator’s work is inseparable from their authorship.
Just as physical property rights do not expire after a set number of years, intellectual property should remain under the control of its originator indefinitely.
If we accept that an artist’s work is a part of their personal legacy, then allowing it to fall into the public domain without their consent is akin to stripping them of a piece of themselves.
Creative works often continue to generate revenue long after their initial release. Under current laws, these profits can eventually be claimed by corporations, publishers, or anyone who exploits the work once it enters the public domain—while the creator’s descendants receive nothing.
Permanent copyright ensures that the financial benefits of a work remain with the creator’s family or chosen heirs.
This is especially important for creators who may have struggled financially during their lifetime but whose work gains value after their death.
In other words, the fruits of a creator’s labor should not be redistributed to strangers simply because time has passed.
When works enter the public domain, they can be altered, repurposed, or commercialized in ways that distort the creator’s original vision.
Permanent copyright would give creators (or their estates) the ability to approve or reject derivative works that might misrepresent their intent.
This protects cultural heritage from being diluted or misused for purposes the creator would have opposed.
For example, without such protections, a profoundly personal novel could be turned into a parody or advertisement without any regard for the author’s wishes.
In today’s digital economy, where content can be copied and distributed instantly, creators face unprecedented challenges in protecting their work.
Knowing that their rights will never expire could encourage more people to invest time, money, and effort into producing high-quality, original works.
Permanent copyright would send a clear message: society values and protects the contributions of its artists, inventors, and thinkers for the long haul.
Critics argue that the public domain fosters creativity by enabling others to build upon existing works. While this is true, it does not require stripping creators of their rights.
Licensing systems can allow for creative reinterpretations while still compensating the original creator or their heirs.
This approach strikes a balance between cultural growth and respect for the originator’s ownership.
Permanent copyright is not about stifling culture—it’s about honoring the people who shape it. By granting creators eternal control over their intellectual property, we affirm that their contributions are not disposable commodities but enduring legacies. In a world where creative works can live forever in digital form, it is only fair that the rights of their creators live forever as well.

I wholeheartedly support Michael's proposal and believe that writers should be working together to ensure necessary protection. But there are a few things that I've discovered and want to highlight.
Publishing a book through a publishing company may affect your ownership of the material, once printed. This is a cautionary statement as I don't know the present contract laws. I do know that, within my period working with both publishers and authors, that a writer may actually have to buy long-term ownership back from the publisher. PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK OUT CONTRACT BEFORE YOU PUBLISH.
Of course, self-publishing has helped to some extent, but never depend on anything... I have read many books where an editor was hired who did not do their job. In one case, the books were so bad that I volunteered to proofread them again as part of my work as a reviewer...
In another case, I explained that in my review I would be discussing the poor editing and the author had not even reread the book as published, thinking that it would be done correctly. I volunteered to write up a statement of what I discovered for the writer, who then used it demand a correction/reprint of the book.
Another time, I was working with a writer who was ready to publish and after reviewing the proofreading the book, I agreed. However, she had NO IDEA of the publishing process. She started talking to other publishers, and really got the whole situation screwed up... Can't remember the details, but just know that the author MUST take full responsibility for each and every book. There is no ability to blame anybody else because the author is required to sign off on each phase... A sad finish, I agreed to review a book that had a beautiful cover and title. I was anxious to start reading. It was so bad that I knew it had not been checked in any way for grammar or errors. I notified her directly rather than through her site and explained. She asked me not to review the book. I still have the book, however, and every once in a while, I pick it up and point out a few more errors that need to be corrected for a complete reprint...
These are just a few. People claim they are editors, but never read the book, instead using grammar and spellcheck... If you do not know that these are tools, not correctors the computer does automatically, then you will get a lousy editing... Only content--actually reading the book being edited--can ensure all errors are discovered and corrected. Everybody makes mistakes, but it is the writer who gets the "credit." I still, when I refer people to a previous review, reread and verify everything is still in good shape. I've removed videos, etc. and updated...
You see, I decided, for this blog, that I wanted each writer to be able to actually use my reviews as needed for marketing. At the bottom of this blog, I have a statement that while this is copyrighted for the purposes of saving the blog in my name, any materials can be copied as long as a reference is made back to the blog... This is the basis upon which I now use, with the author's permission, material that is worthy to be shared further, including across the world here at Book Readers Heaven...
A final note, I do not support AI for writing. It creates a difference in the skills, creativity, and enjoyment of books, especially fiction. I guarantee you that it will be at least a thousand years before a computer can adequately create a thriller in words... It also may ultimately create a financial edge which, in my opinion, will be a problem for every writer who works carefully to ensure that every single word moves the story that he/she is creating forward...NOT anything artificial...
And, then, of course, there is the issue of ghostwriting. When one man can claim he wrote a book(s) written by somebody else, and never reads... But that's on another page...
Thank You, Michael, for placing this important issue before the writing and publishing world!
We have heard it ad nauseum: Democrats and Biden have destroyed our energy independence and seriously damaged the oil industry. Donald claimed that President Biden has a “plan to abolish the entire U.S. oil industry”. Sen. John Kennedy accused President Joe Biden of leading “a frontal assault on oil and gas.” Sen. Shelley Moore Capito bemoaned Biden’s “backwards, America-last energy policies.” Per usual, these MAGA Republicans provide no evidence to back their spurious claims.
Here are some pertinent facts for those few Republicans and many Democrats and Independents who rely on facts and logic to make their judgements.
US oil output is now projected to rise to an average of 12.8 million barrels per day this year FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. To put this in perspective, that’s about half a million barrels PER DAY more than the prior annual record set in 2019… by Donald. It’s also more oil than any other country on the planet produces. It works out to be a 16% increase since January 2021 when Biden took office from Donald.
In summary, in terms of our energy independence, President Biden has improved it since he took office. In addition to increasing oil production (by 16%!), he has also opened the door for more green energy. Hence, we are far more energy independent than we ever were when the pathological liar, Donald, controlled the White House.
~~~
It’s not just Donald. MAGA Republicans follow his example and often put out false claims as truth. For example, they often use the term “Biden Crime Family”… even though there is no substantiated proof of any crimes.
Oh, of course, there are the horrible crimes committed by Hunter Biden. After over four years of investigation Weiss, the Republican Donald-appointed attorney to investigate Hunter, found only one crime--Hunter was guilty of fibbing on his income tax. It’s important to point out that many Republicans have also committed that very same crime including Donald. That is the extent of proof for the criminality of the “Biden Crime Family”.
Oh, but MAGA Republicans insist Hunter’s “crimes” MUST be far worse. His nefarious crimes would have been found out if the DOJ had not thwarted the investigation of Hunter Biden. Well, there is no proof of the DOJ restricting Weiss. But… but… but AG Garland refused to make Weiss a special prosecutor. AG Garland testified that Weiss had never asked for such a status. Weiss himself admitted that he was given wide latitude for investigating Hunter.
After the plea deal fell through, Weiss did ask for special prosecutor status so that he could prosecute Hunter in different venues. Well, guess what? The MAGA Republicans are still crying foul. They want a different special prosecutor. Why? Because Weiss has said a number of times that, after 4 years, there simply are no serious crimes committed by Hunter. Well, we can’t have that, can we? Hunter has to be the punching bag of the ultra-right. And, if Weiss can’t do it right, then get an attorney who can. Someone who will scream “Biden Crime Family.”
~~~
While Donald has to explain and, most probably, lie about over 90 indictments, MAGA Republicans keep yammering about the “Biden Crime Family”. So, let’s set the record straight. First, there is nothing illegal about any American getting money from foreign sources. So, just because Hunter Biden got money from Urkrain or China or any country is not evidence of a crime. Nor is having “shell” companies a crime. What would be a crime is a government official gaining money from a foreign source or even American source for services rendered due to his position.
Now, MAGA spouts about $20 million in payments to the "Biden Crime Family"... Comer and other Republicans invoke this figure often. A close reading of the memos, however, finds that only about $7 million can be directly attributed to Biden family members and most of that money went to Hunter. The rest went to business associates of Hunter. There is zero evidence that any of that money went to Joe Biden. Nor is there any evidence that Joe Biden rendered any services for the aforementioned businesses.
So, there is no evidence of any crime. None. Further, there is no evidence that Joe Biden accepted any money from any of Hunter’s enterprises or did any services for any of Hunter’s enterprises. The only fact in all this Hunter Biden Distraction is that Hunter got about $7 million probably taking advantage of his familial connection to Joe Biden. There was no crime.

A COMMENT ABOUT CENSORSHIP - By the Author - These are scary days in which to raise teenagers. I know. I’ve had four of them. Part of the problem is that we have a generation that has been exposed to unprecedented amounts of sexual behavior in the media and on the Internet. They see it, they talk about it, their hormones react, and a lot of kids wind up in painful situations.
Literature is the safe and traditional vehicle through which we learn about the world and pass on values from one generation to the next. Books save lives. Contemporary young adult literature surprises some people, because it is an accurate reflection of the way today’s teenagers talk, think, and behave. But these books must be honest in order to connect to the teen reader. America’s teens are desperate for responsible, trustworthy adults to create situations in which they can discuss the issues that are of the highest concern for them. Reading and discussing books is one of the most effective ways to get teens to think through and learn about the challenges of adolescence. Most of the censorship I see is fear-driven. I respect that. The world is a very scary place. It is a terrifying place in which to raise children, and in particular, teenagers. It is human nature to nurture and protect children as they grow into adulthood. But censoring books that deal with difficult, adolescent issues does not protect anybody. Quite the opposite. It leaves kids in darkness and makes them vulnerable. Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance. Our children cannot afford to have the truth of the world withheld from them. They need us to be brave enough to give them great books so they can learn how to grow up into the men and women we want them to be.--Included in the book, Speak (along with discussion guide, sexual assault survivor kit resources.
U.S. Department of Justice, 44 percent of rape victims are under the age of 18 and 46 percent of those victims are between the ages of 12–15. It makes adults uncomfortable to acknowledge this, but our inability to speak clearly and openly about sexual issues endangers our children. It is immoral not to discuss this with them.
Whenever I get a chance, I watch Velshi's Banned Book Club, hosted on MSNBC. This morning it discussed The Lord of the Flies, but I was more interested and had bought the last book discussed which was Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. The book was originally published in 2011, has sold over 2.5M copies, has received awards, made into a movie, and has now been featured in The Philadelphia Citizen. An interesting interview should be heard first, as the author laments that her book(s) continue to be viewed as worthy of being...banned...
As I've mentioned before, the right of choice, for me, is always immediately associated with rape/incest... Thus the actions of the Supreme Court, whose members are now controlled by the far-right republicans, as well as republican leaders all over the United States are quickly now being responded to by action by women and men all over the country, who are working to ensure these rights that were arbitrarily lost by, we all know, purely by political actions, are to be reinstated.
Statements like, "Don't Say Gay," are similar in intent to incite fear and/or anger, just as much as those who are presently running for congress who claim that they will force abortion to be banned across the nation. And, further, and most important, that they will make no exceptions! Not for the mother's life, not for rape...and not for incest! Even the elimination of birth control is being discussed...
I am a Christian; I do not condone abortion as a means of birth control, which many often claim is the "primary" way abortion is being used. However, I very much believe that child birth is known to be a dangerous situation, and I believe that the health care before, during, and after birth is a period during which many choices might need to be made, for valid, personal reasons. To return to a point where we no longer can feel secure in proper and effective medical care during pregnancies is totally unacceptable... and, to show a parallel of its importance. Consider the Afghan women who are now being forced to wear the full-body clothing, as well as having loss of loss of their rights to education! Forced upon them by tyrannical, domineering men!
It appears that Trump has ultimately incited...and indeed allowed misogyny to break free to those men who do not feel a need to have a "partner" in their relationships. Rather, they prefer to be the dominating individual in any relationship. This certainly is not based upon God's love, yet it is being puched down our throats by those republicans now in office who have started what is being considered a catastrophe by the majority of women...and many men... in our country.
CODE BREAKING
Hairwoman has been buying new earrings. One pair hangs all the way down to her shoulders. Another has bells in them like the pair Heather gave me at Christmas. I guess I can’t wear mine anymore. There should be a law.
It’s Nathaniel Hawthorne Month in English. Poor Nathaniel. Does he know what they’ve done to him? We are reading The Scarlet Letter one sentence at a time, tearing it up and chewing on its bones.
It’s all about SYMBOLISM, says Hairwoman. Every word chosen by Nathaniel, every comma, every paragraph break—these were all done on purpose. To get a decent grade in her class, we have to figure out what he was really trying to say. Why couldn’t he just say what he meant? Would they pin scarlet letters on his chest? B for blunt, S for straightforward? I can’t whine too much. Some of it is fun. It’s like a code, breaking into his head and finding the key to his secrets.
Like the whole guilt thing. Of course you know the minister feels guilty and Hester feels guilty, but Nathaniel wants us to know this is a big deal. If he kept repeating, “She felt guilty, she felt guilty, she felt guilty,” it would be a boring book and no one would buy it. So he planted SYMBOLS, like the weather, and the whole light and dark thing, to show us how poor Hester feels. I wonder if Hester tried to say no. She’s kind of quiet. We would get along. I can see us, living in the woods, her wearing that A, me with an S maybe, S for silent, for stupid, for scared. S for silly. For shame. So the code-breaking part was fun for the first lesson, but a little of it goes a long way.
Hairwoman is hammering it to death. Hairwoman: “The description of the house with bits of glass embedded in the walls—what does it mean?” Utter silence from the class. A fly left over from fall buzzes against the cold window. A locker slams in the hall. Hairwoman answers her own question. “Think of what that would look like, a wall with glass embedded in it. It would … reflect? Sparkle? Shine on sunny days maybe. Come on, people, I shouldn’t have to do this by myself. Glass in the wall. We use that on top of prison walls nowadays. Hawthorne is showing us that the house is a prison, or a dangerous place maybe. It is hurtful. Now, I asked you to find some examples of the use of color. Who can list a few pages where color is described?”
The fly buzzes a farewell buzz and dies.

Note from Gabby: If I had Hairwoman for a teacher,
I'd be saying the same as Melinda! Boooring...
Melinda is the main character of Speak. The book is written somewhat like a diary--as if, she writes there only when she has something important to say... Such as when her English teacher forces the entire class to explore, analyze, and discuss the selected book for this year,.. and determines that it should be read and digested...one sentence at a time... Can you even imagine this? No wonder Melinda had flashes of being a good student...and then, just ignoring the whole class topic scene...
Of course, after she was raped, at age 13, and didn't tell anybody, she had a lot to think about besides school, parents, and friends. Like, how she really hated the fact that she didn't scream and get him off of her... how she didn't know how to share this, after, when she came back to the beach party, crying, her best friend slapped her in the face for calling the cops... And, especially, just how did she think she could ever tell her parents, especially since they didn't know she had been at a party, drank enough beer to be considered drunk, and that, at first, thought it was cool that a senior thought her cute enough to ask her to go for a walk with him... And that, when he asked, she didn't realize what he was asking and by the time she did and started speaking, that he held his hand over her mouth and proceeded...
Melinda decided that, since she didn't immediately speak to the police and parents, that she just wouldn't say anything...And she began to not "speak" any more than she had to. Her parents at one point even took her to a doctor, with whom she wouldn't speak, of course. Little by little she began to return to her usual activities, most of the time being alone. She even had discovered a rarely used closet at school, where she smuggled in a blanket and had several books and pictures, one of Maya Angelou (which the librarian had to take down, because one of her books was being banned), and others which she was creating herself in the one class, Art, for which she had some personal connection. Fortunately the teacher was empathetic and chose to spend a little more time in clarifying what the meaning of art could mean to her personally.
But then, her supposed friend--the one that had slapped her on the night of her rape and had spoiled the party calling the cops, began to date the senior who had raped her... She felt she had to tell her, but could she?
Since Anderson has written the books, thousands of teens have contacted her sharing how much her book meant to her. She was gratified that it included boys, and so she wrote a book, Twisted, hoping she could have sufficient knowledge and empathy to have it respond to boys needs... Apparently it has... Yet many continue to call for a banning of her books!
I found myself reliving my early "me too" situations--ones that I've never shared. Thankfully, none led to rape, but, even so, they were of incestuous actions which were traumatic in a different way from that of a rape by a stranger, I think, but just as destructive of a young girl's ability to...trust...
If I had a daughter, I would make an effort to share with her. As the author clearly states, it is immoral not to...
Too bad, many men do not see anything wrong with rape, including incest... If they only knew--and took the time to learn about their potential girlfriends before they even think about having sex... One of the results would have been that a court case would never had been needed to determine that a girl/ woman always must have complete control of her own body.
Make sure you get the latest edition of this book, including the additional supporting materials... Get it for yourself...and then another copy for any young teen that you love and have enough concern about her future to initiate a discussion on this very important subject...
I have to admit that I thought I was running as fast as I can, metaphorically, that is. The urgency is high, but I have to realize that I can't possibly become aware of all the things that are affecting our daily lives, in these days of chaos... Still, when I happened to turn on a program, Velshi on MSNBC, I felt a sense of panic again. At this time, I've at least calmed down in recognizing that I can only do as much as I can...and it is UP TO YOU MY READERS, to decide whether you become as concerned as I was...
On the way to a video regarding the first book author who was a guest on Velshi this morning, I saw this video about Rob Reiner's increasing concern. He speaks as an activist, far more involved than I could ever be... So I decided to begin with sharing his words...
Velshi has been running a series on Banned Books, ever since the Republican Party started their crusade against just about anything other than...say, the Bible, and even that book had The Book of Solomon identified NOT to be read by fragile white children. You know, those who apparently are never to be exposed to the idea of sexuality--until the day when their innate curiosity and biological urges are more important to them than what their banned books parents have been willing to help them understand and learn in a safe way...
A Democracy Relies on Informed Citizens...
Banning Books Imperial Society...
If Our Government Leaders Have No Empathy for All of its citizens, then there can be no democracy
My Apologies to Those With Whom I've been working on special projects.
Some things just can be ignored...
Because that's what The Authoritatarian Republican Party (Fascist?) Wants !?1
But the introduction of today's two books, I admit, threw me into a spiral into turmoil, anger, and, even worse, an overwhelming feeling of being... overwhelmed... What in the world is going on? How much worse can it get in America (and in other parts of the world).
The first book was by a history professor, and things were moving too fast, that I finally landed on the word Lucid, to ensure I could do the appropriate searches for her. Lucid, by the way, is a subscription to various methods of learning about being Lucid in today's world. As of now, I've subscribed just for the free material to see what it will be covering.
Author Ruth Ben-Ghiat's book follows the leaders of fascism through history up through and including Trump and Putin... all purported to follow a specific pattern(s) by which they have succeeded in moving to, or creating, an authoritarian fascist country. I had learned, already, that Trump's actions were Fascist... Ironically, he became almost outraged about the people who identified as ANTIFA Learn more at, for example, a news coverage.... at https://www.cbsnews.com/news/what-is-antifa/
Yes, it is really not an organization, but a philosophy that many have seen that Trump's actions leaning toward fascism...
Now we learn of the new book, STRONGMEN: MUSSOLINI to the Present by Ruth Ben-Ghiat. I have not read the book, but, I, along with all of you, hopefully, plan to listen carefully to her discussion as presented in the following video.
Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present - One of the actions pinpointed by the author was the routine practice to keep having elections, which implied to the country's residents, that there was a free election of their leader. At the same time, the mechanics (hacking is the only way I can think of explaining) of the equipment used for elections would be done "under cover" so that the authoritarian leader would always win!
It wasn't hard for me to immediately think about recent breaking news by Politico about the RNC's plan for future elections! It's Going to be An Army! If you have not already heard about the latest shenanigans of republicans, the link is provided, noting that they will have an "army" to challenge anything and everything related to elections! UNBELIEVABLE! And yet, IT IS QUITE BELIEVABLE GIVEN WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING BY THAT PARTY. WHICH IS NOW ALREADY BEING IDENTIFIED AS THE AUTHORARIAN PARTY OF AMERICA...
The Second Book hits anybody who has been horrified by the Texas school shooting, et.al., that have happened Every Day for about a month. Most of us are acquainted with SWAT, as a result of a television program. SWAT is a supposedly highly trained group of individuals who are used to handle high danger situations. You guessed it, they are the only ones that use the high-power, multi-bullet, fast-kill guns (my descriptive words).
Apparently (not researched to confirm) more and more police are establishing SWAT Teams. The thing is that, since, hopefully, in most areas, there is not sufficient incidents at which SWAT would be required.
Consider, as was discussed, that the group who first arrived in Texas. Say, for instance, that in Uvalde, Texas, was SWAT. Would that be good or bad? My first thought was that it could have been good, but then, it is now well known, that the head of the first responders not only did not carry his radio, but that he kept his officers from entering the school, assuming that there were no children now alive, even if shots were still going off... And even while 911 calls from children within the school, continued to be received (but not communicated to the police leader).We all will be watching to see what the formal investigation by the federal government will actually reveal...
But, for now, let's consider that even small towns would be "equipped" as SWAT... Yet, because they have few really dangerous situations, they would still be fully "loaded" to take care of, for instance, domestic disturbances, a story robbery, or a drug bust... Being trained to shoot first, apparently, has already resulted in, in my memory, the death of a woman whose apartment was taken by police for drugs...only to later find that the police were not at the right address!
Yikes! I would never not want to be without police support. On the other hand, I will never forget the young 17-year-old boy who took his gun, purchased for him by somebody else, who crossed state lines, pretending to be there only to help if medical assistance was needed... Yet, was followed by a photographer, had announced on a social site that he would be going...and, who, carried a deadly weapon...for his own protection... Yet he was the one who murdered that night...was not charged for those deaths...and was supported and praised by the RNC at a national meeting, even implying he was needed for jobs in the future... Scary is the only word that comes to mind about that situation and the potential of so many others...
I don't know what is going to happen in the future. All I can do is share my devastation that, with the placement of, in my opinion, a criminal, guilty mostly for the insurrection of January 6th...plus all the damage he'd done to eliminate restrictions such as safety for workers, while allowing rich owners to get even richer... via, especially, with a tax cut that wound up only serving the rich! What I do know, is that I can feel the danger in the air...It is toxic! It is insidious, and almost overwhelming in even allowing and speaking of what they plan to do. You, who are republicans... I don't even know how to talk to any of you any more. I'm am scared to death of where the future seems to be heading...
Yet I feel compelled to point out, again... that, even though the Evangelical Christians, have apparently merged their future into the plan of action for this Political Party, I do not believe that God supports what is happening. Violence, deception, hate, prejudice, seeking power for its sake, seeking money through criminal activities...just...cannot...be...ordained...as...part...of...MY God's plan...
And by the way, talking about criminal actions...have you heard that Trump's son-in-law, as they were leaving office, managed to make a deal for handling of billions of the Prince's money... Again, things are coming out so fast, I'm not sure of details, other than the WHO involved and the WHEN it happened.
Finally, I've been trying to provide a little lighter discussions and spotlights on my sister blog, Just My Personal Opinion, Of course. I can guarantee only one thing...You'll never know what topics will be covered...and I'll be trying to have a little fun in sharing my opinions... Why not bookmark it right now! Or link will always appear at top right on Book Readers Heaven Blog...
