Lauren Carr's Latest Book, Winter Frost, Left Me Breathless! Pre-Order Now Available!

I love being a first reader for best-selling author, Lauren Carr...Months ago I had shared my opinion that I believed she had reached a plateau that placed her along side major authors of today... Her latest, I am thrilled to say, has reached another plateau! What a Happy Dance Event! This book can easily be considered for a fantastic television movie that would showcase both her wonderful story but also a crazy bunch of characters that both drives the story as well as all play important parts in the plot! Including animals and a super computer named Nigel...

Yes, I'm talking about The Geezer Squad! And I can only say that a primary chase scene, with all involved, left me breathless in the magnitude of complexity as well as sheer close, tight maneuvering of the players in working to capture the villains!

Keeping Sterling at his side, Chris and Bruce climbed the stairs to the bank’s main floor. With a quick glance, Chris saw that the woman in the jean jacket was still checking out the brochure case. He put his hand in his jacket pocket to make sure the envelope was still there before they proceeded across the lobby. Chris sensed the woman turning to follow them. Bruce switched his briefcase from one hand to the other to open the door for him and Sterling. 

At the same time, Jacqui, dressed up in a suit, briefcase and all, swept in to grab the same door handle. 

“Thank you very much for your time,” she said over her shoulder while colliding into Bruce. Both briefcases fell to the floor. 

“Oh, I am so sorry! How clumsy of me,” Jacqui said loudly. “I really need to look where I’m going.” 

“No problem, ma’am.” Bruce picked up his briefcase and handed it to her. “Have a nice day.” 

Thanking them, Jacqui shot out the door. Bruce picked up the briefcase she had dropped, and they left the bank. The woman in the jacket rushed ahead of them to see Jacqui climb into the passenger seat of a dark blue Malibu sedan. 

The tires squealed when Doris hit the gas pedal to speed out of the parking lot. Not far behind them, Murphy raced out of the lot on the black motorcycle. Gesturing wildly at the sedan, the woman jumped into the passenger seat of a black SUV and they took off in hot pursuit. 

Burnett and his partner remained in their vehicle while watching the action. The roar of the motorcycle was still fresh in the air when Sterling jerked his leash out of Chris’s hand and galloped to where the woman in the fur coat was climbing into the back of the white limousine. 

An enormous man in a chauffeur's suit held the door open for her and Tristan, who had Spencer on a leash. Barking and yapping joyously, the two dogs circled each other until their leashes became entangled. Tristan fought to part the two dogs. 

“Can you please control your damn dog!” the woman called to Chris, who opened the door of his truck and whistled to the German shepherd from across the lot. “Sterling! Come!” 

Sterling spun around and raced toward the truck. Several feet away, he launched himself to become air-born and landed in the passenger seat. 

“That is no service dog!” the woman complained loudly. “Did he soil my dear princess?” she was asking Tristan when he joined her in the back seat. 

The chauffeur slipped into the driver’s seat and started the engine. He turned left to head for the toll road leading to Washington. 

In the truck, Chris noticed that Burnett and his partner remained in their vehicle—waiting for them to make their next move. 

“Looks like Burnett is sticking with us,” he said into his ear com while turning on the truck. “Tristan, tell me you got it?” Murphy asked over the roar of the motorcycle. 

“Got it,” Tristan said. “I’m going to upload the files to Nigel now.” 

“They never look at the service dog.” 

Bruce reached into the backseat to pat Sterling on the head. Chris was too focused on Burnett in the SUV across from them. 

The two men’s eyes seemed to meet. “He can’t let you go,” Bruce said in a low voice. “You know too much.” 

“Fasten your seat-belt, Bruce. We’re going for a ride.” Chris shifted the truck into drive.

I had to give you a taste of the beginning of the chase scene which goes on and on... By the time you get to what is the most climatic scene of the book, readers know all of the characters and watch as each plays a different part in this crucial, and potential, deadly climatic scene...

But let's not get ahead of the story just because I am so excited about the book, LOL...

Chris and his wife, Blair had separated--well, Blair took a job overseas and left the family to continue her career. None of the remaining family were happy, but had begun to make adjustments, when they learned that she had been killed... Since then, Chris became involved with an earlier love and they are all happily living, with Chris and the girls living with his mother on their farm...

But Blair had not been killed. She had been given a memory card that needed to make its way to Washington. It would not be easy since there were powerful individuals who were after that card...Blair had been given new identification and living off the grid for quite some time. Now she was back...

And accidentally was seen by Chris at Pentagon City. He immediately had flashbacks of what had occurred as Blair had decided to go to Switzerland. Even though he was waiting for his mother and friend, he urgently started after her. He spotted a man, obviously undercover to his eyes, and asked him about seeing a blond...but quickly left after no response...Chris was soon on the train platform and saw a man, holding her close, with a gun held against her body... they were headed for the next train...

Chris could see the man's face and knew him! He panicked because he was very well known as an international assassin! He had to get to Blair... Was he only to learn that Blair was still alive, to see her murdered? Chris was separated as the train moved into the station and the crowd moved to enter.

Blair had seen Chris but now there was nothing she could do. Chris moved into position and pulled out the small handgun from his ankle holster and fired into the air to get the crowd out of the way. Blair had been pulled into the train as the crowd panicked and, for the moment, was separated from the assassin.

Mancini's gun had been thrown away as the crowd jostled him, but he didn't need it anymore. Chris had shot him in the head; he was dead... He looked for Blair who was on the train, and she cried out "Chris, I wish we had more time."

Readers, I have just shared about the first chapter...only... If you are saying, wow! You are right! WOW! This book is sensational. Even in that first chapter, you will have learned about villains, and government officials, who will be involved throughout the book...

But nothing interests me more than having The Geezer Squad go into action. For those who haven't previously read their entry into this series, this is a group of retired professionals, from various agencies, who have formed a "book club." Yes, they meet to study true crime...which are actually cold or, in this case, recent crimes. They are amazing as they use their professional skills, expertise, and contacts, to move each case forward to completion...

And then there is Tristan and Nigel, Nigel is a powerful networked computer that Tristan built. Nigel has visited far more "friendly" computers than any hacker...by friendly I mean that he enters other machines so carefully they don't mind (or don't realize) having Nigel visit... But was he good enough to save Tristan when their home was bombed?

From the first chapter to the end, the excitement, the scares, the surprises...and the wonderful characters, simply blew my mind...This is Carr's absolute best, in my opinion. Her move into espionage, terrorism, which reaches all the way into Congress, with one man having enough money to have bought many individual's support... And is willing to kill when needed...

Carr's creativity to expand beyond where she has been before and this book proves her continued growth, in already being a best-seller author. It's amazing to have watched and read her from her very first book, to the one she has coming out next week! I couldn't wait to share how great it is!

I highly recommend you pre-order right now. Fans of Carr will be as delighted as I was... And, if you haven't read her books yet...let me just say she writes multi-genre books that include suspense, action, thrills...and a whole lot of humor, including cute as well as trained professional animals,  that somehow fit in as complementary character activities that just makes her books so much more special. 

Obviously, she's a top favorite for me and this book has to be placed at the top of my personal favorites!

...A gratefully quiet evening in a busy life had been in pleasant predictable bloom. But it was shaken by twenty-three seconds of airtime, inadvertently captured from a local channel, as Clayton surfed while he waited on the soft white foam of his beer to fizzle itself into oblivion. Sealed indictments had been opened and implicated a local commissioner in a bribery scandal. A land developer had donated forty-five thousand dollars to the commissioner's election campaign following his own failed attempt at pushing a housing development plan past the Regional Resource Impact Committee. Weeks later, with the freshly minted commissioner at the helm of the impact study appeal, the decision was reversed and chainsaws began immediately biting into cypress trees that had provided shade and relief for peoples as widespread as the Seminole Indians, Spanish conquistadors marching inland from sandy beaches, migrant workers, citrus growers, and tourists of six decades. Seven seconds of video showed the site with a voiceover describing the incalculable damage...In the background, a mountain of two hundred year old cypress scrub pine, and oak, choked with brush, burned violently as it raced to consume the evidence. The fire triggered a reminder in Clayton of the flame of Wyatt's Torch and he knew--as an epiphany--that it was time for Atlas to shrug again...

...By the time the news loop broke into its new cycle with a new painted face, a straightforward plan had emerged from the yellow pad. Clayton re-read his work, made the last of his simple choices for the night, and put the pad aside.

"To those whom much is given, much is expected. Something like that," Clayton said stiffly as he stood and stretched an ache which had settled into his back compliments of the awkward dangling leg. "Yes, much is expected, you sonofabitch," he poignantly directed while the mumbling television went quiet as though it had committed the crime and had not simply been the messenger. "And tomorrow comes the accounting..."

"Time for payback," he said to both the note pad and his keyboard. He adjusted his monitor slightly, though he was alone in his home, and absently and foolishly leaned to the side to see for certain if the monitor filter was in place. At the extent of his lean the screen went to black then he turned his fingers loose...

I have enjoyed reading this author since his novel, Cherokee Talisman was published. then enjoyed an anthology The Cats of Savone:  8 Short Novels for Busy People. But nothing could have prepared me for his two-book novel The New Illuminati. I have a great respect for this author's work. It challenges, excites but presents such a wonderful literary tale that you can't help but become completely involved with his story. The first book, which is covered today, is devastatingly awesome! I mean--as I place it on my personal favorite list for 2016, I must declare it the top of that list!

Many of you will have "suffered" through the politics for this election year... Hopefully, you may have seen the segment on Sixty Minutes this week where a group of "average voters" were polled. If you didn't, click on the top link if you want to grasp the tone of this new book...

And the tone of the feelings for many of us, including myself... Got to admit right up front...Loved this book! It feels like it was written for me...for many of us who are tired of the corruption, the loss of a reliable justice system, as well as the pure bureaucratic nonsense we routinely see, without being able to do anything. One politician follows another term after term, without change to the underlying problems... it has reached a crisis stage...

That's when and how the New Illuminati arose... There have been other historical groups with the name Illuminati, but I found the inclusion of the Boston Tea party in the book to be a better reference for most of us to remember and understand from American history... Have we reached the point for another tea party? Read this book...

Before very long, all who had been involved with a recent decision to destroy decades old cypress to clear a space for development, which had been approved through financial bribes, were not only indicted, but all of the money involved and more, was gone.

A top computer genius, who created software for the government as well as private corporations, along with three child-hood friends, had learned a shortened version of a scripture from a local newspaper salesman (and numbers bookie, which is now run as the lottery) and had taught it to his son and friends when they were young. They all had accepted those words as a slogan for their lives. Now, each of them, in their own lives were looking around and seeing what was happening with government corruption, bribes of political officials, and so much more. It was the genius who first decided to act... and we see how he uses his computer expertise to bring a certain commissioner and those who worked with him to justice...

The New Illuminati had been born... He started with the eye on our dollar bill and soon developed the symbol that he would use to let people know... We are watching and your actions have been discovered...

The second member of The New Illuminati became my favorite character. He had been taught by the Army to maim and kill and had served in Special Forces without any type of identity or recognition. Then when his automatic reflexes through training resulted in him roughing up a guy at a local bar, he was promptly kicked out and ignored...hidden as a soldier who, on paper, had had just a regular time in service, with no special contributions... How cruel the armed services can be after soldiers can no longer efficiently comply with directives...

Sam had seen what had happened to the commission, et.al., and recognized the symbol and words that had been left... Without any words necessary, he talked to Clay and they both knew he would become the muscle behind what would happen next...

A mayor and a senator were the next to be targeted by the watching eye...

Let's face it. We want to read a book that gives us the justice, the vigilantis we believe are needed...since nothing else seems to be working...

David-Michael Harding gives us just that in Book 1! By the time the book is moving toward the end, people all over the country are taking action. I had to broadly smile when a citizen kicked a certain politician in a place he loves to display...

"Have you read the Constitution lately?" Clayton asked.

"Not lately. Why?"

"How about the Declaration of Independence?

"Same."

"You know the part, 'When in the course of human events...' and so on and so forth?"

"Sounds familiar," Raphael answered with measured hesitation as though being lured into a trap.

"A few lines below that there's a sentence that's stuck in my head. 'That when any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.' Do you know that part?"

"It doesn't mean what you're making it out to mean. It means alter--change--as in voting them out or making amendments, provisions, guarantees."

"Vote them out?"

"Yes."

"You're the one who's being naive. You can't get them out. It clearly says 'abolish.' Politicians are like ticks--they sink their teeth om the public tit and you can't get rid of them unless you kill them."

"So, that's how this ends, Clay? You kill everyone?"

"That's not the end. "That's the beginning..."

"What we do in genetic engineering is to take a gene from the DNA of one species and insert it into the DNA of a completely different species. This is a type of breeding that could never occur in nature. For example, the first genetically engineered crop was a tomato that could stand cold weather without freezing. We took a gene from a fish that lived in cold waters, and inserted it into the DNA of the tomato. The result was a freeze proof tomato.”

“So, genes of a fish go into genes of a tomato?”

 “Yes.” 

“What is the danger in that?”

 “The danger is that we don’t really know all the consequences of what could happen. Did you ever see the movie ‘The Fly’?”

 “Yes.”

 “In ‘The Fly,’ when the scientist tested his teleporter by using himself as the test subject, his genes were “spliced” with the genes of a fly that was in the teleporter with him, and all kinds of unexpected things began happening to his body and he eventually turned into a monster. 

When we splice a gene from an animal or a bacteria into the gene of a plant, we don’t really know everything that will happen. Evolution has had millions of years to work with the present species that we know on earth. Because of the genetic engineering process, which is very new at the moment, the GMO plant we make today could produce toxins or even viruses that we have never seen before, and we may not be able to control them. The government says that if the genetically engineered food looks like conventional food, then it is safe. But that ignores what is happening on a cellular level.”

“So you are saying that, even if the food looks the same, the dangers are hidden inside?”

“Exactly. The government reports that I obtained from my company say that the project I was working on, for example, produces a food which is not safe for human consumption, but it has been approved anyway. We were taking a gene from the DNA of a bacteria that is a natural insecticide that makes the stomach of an insect explode, and planting it into the DNA of a corn crop. That way the corn will produce its own insecticide and when insects eat it, they will die. The problem is that the corn produces a poison which is far more potent than the bacteria found naturally. In the process, we also use a potent plant virus, which is similar to the AIDS virus, to stimulate the production of the toxin, which could lie dormant and reactivate later, or produce an even different virus that we have never seen before. And we use antibiotic resistant genes in the process, which could cause resistance to very common antibiotics, leaving us open to all kinds of bacterial diseases.” 

“Toxins, viruses, antibiotic resistance – that doesn’t sound like safe things to be putting into our food.”

“Exactly. That is what the reports from the United States government say, and my company, Germinat, has succeeded in burying those reports from public view.” 

“It’s a good thing that these foods are not yet on the market.”

“But they are – they have already been approved and are in 70% of the processed foods eaten in America, and almost all animal feeds.”

“So that’s why you left the States and are afraid of prosecution, because you have these government reports that they don’t want to make public...”

An Involuntary Spy

It's a literary fiction thriller, but is it? Sure, you can read it with the same action and "rush" you may get from other thrillers, but by the time you get to the back of the book where the author has provided page after page of Author's Notes supporting the primary issue on which the story is created--GMO--Genetically Modified Organisms...it turns into more of a horror than The Fly movie, which is used to help demonstrate what happens with GMO...

The novel starts off when Seth Rogan has already been discovered for what he has done. Some call him a whistleblower. Personally, I like the word because it identifies somebody who is willing to speak out when they see wrong being done. So, if I had to choose between traitor, spy or even terrorist--words that are thrown around more today than ever before--I'd gladly accept him as a very efficient, effective and, indeed, brilliant whistleblower!

And so is the author! 

Then the story moves into the period within the company, Germinat, where he worked and to the time when he was asked to perform an independent internal study to support their activities. Readers get the opportunity to learn what was behind GMO, at least for this company... It was to secure continued use of their main product--the bottom line was all that mattered! 

“Hello, this is Pavel Kargin reporting from
Moscow with an exclusive interview with
 Seth Rogan, an ex Germinat scientist who
 has fled the United States and sought refuge
 here in Russia. Good to have you here, Seth.”
 “Good to be here, Pavel.”
“Tell our audience please, why you have
 selected Russia and why you thought
it was dangerous
 for you to remain in America?”
 “I chose Russia not because I’m a traitor,
but because there was no way I could tell
 this story unless I kept my freedom.
While I was working at Germinat,
 I came across some government documents
 that prove that the U.S. government
 knew that our genetically engineered
foods are unsafe.

Seth Rogan was merely acting on the behalf of all people in working to expose what he had already proved by test results, which had been immediately hidden. He continued even after his lab at work was vandalized and the people who had been working with him had gone back to their previous work... He also continued after his home was invaded and vandalized... And he knew if he was ever going to be able to do something about what he'd discovered, he'd need more proof and, yes, decided it was worth some criminal activities to gain that evidence. And what he learned was that government officials at the top ranks were either involved or turning blind eyes to the problems being created!

He knew he'd have to get out of the country and chose Russia since there was no signed agreement between the countries that those seeking asylum would be returned... Rogan was immediately given a visa to enter the country and additional work would begin to formally grant asylum...

But those back in the U.S. would not be satisfied until Rogan was...gone...

Rogan was given a different name and a job teaching English. He had a Russian handler and things went well until there was evidence that he was being followed...Both the CIA and FBI were after him...just when he was close to falling in love...

Seth kept rolling around in the little hotel bed. He couldn’t possibly sleep. He kept thinking, 

staring up at the ceiling, then closing his eyes to try to force himself to sleep. He turned to one side, then another. It seemed like every part of his body itched. He scratched, then turned to the other side. 

Ridiculous lyrics to the same song, Heard it through the Grapevine, bounced around in his brain, refusing to be evicted. 

Finally, he called Dave. “Dave, it’s George.” 

“George, how are you?” 

“I’m good – look, I’m sorry it’s late, but we have to talk...”

I wish I could just say that this novel was fascinating and intriguing in its possibility. But all you need to do is a search, such as the referenced site above, to find that actions regarding GMO foods are routinely dealt with--with potential harm to people across the world! Do take the time to read and understand the early part of the story, when Rogan is first caught in the realization of criminal actions against consumers of the food being produced by Germinat. It is scary to realize that crops are routinely changed in order, for instance, to act as their own insecticide!

The action-packed chase is a major highlight of the book and will have readers turning pages to see who can be trusted, who will be killed next, and whether Rogan even escapes...A final interaction between Rogan and his beloved leaves readers to believe there is a follow-up story, but the climax was really what happened as Rogan's protectors started dropping around him! Great ending! Excellent response to the critical problem this novel identifies! You've got to call this a must-read in my opinion...
