Favorite Author, Lauren Carr, Presents Her Latest - Shadows of the Missing - A Chris Matheson Cold Case Book 5 - A Personal Favorite! With Playlist...

With a heavy sigh, she collapsed into his arms. “What if she pushes one button too many and I end up killing her?” “You can call Elliott and me, and we’ll help you get rid of her body.” She chuckled. “You’d do that for me?” “I vowed for better or for worse.”

Kassie gave a short, humorless laugh. “Always the cop, huh? Even when it’s family.” “Especially when it’s family.” Helen finally met her gaze. “I spent over thirty years wondering why people disappeared on us. I’m not losing you to something stupid like this.”

“How many pitchers of beer did you drink?” Elliott asked with a wicked grin. “Three,” Chris asked. “But Helen and I weren’t driving and—” “But buzzed enough to kill all inhibitions,” Francine giggled. “Let’s just say while this hotel is nice, the walls aren’t that thick,” Elliott said. “I’m in the mood for love,” Doris sang. Helen’s face flushed. “We are married.” Doris held up her hands in surrender. “Hey, I’m glad that you and my son have a sexually happy relationship.” With a sigh, Chris rubbed his flushed face. “Not for the rest of our stay here.”

It's been quite some time since I read a book by Lauren, but I knew that there would be a basic sameness that made me make her one of my favorite authors... First, a dog will always be a member of the family... Indeed, Lauren started out with a family series and has continued the saga down through the years, spotlighting each generation in one way or another... In my mind I might not be able to remember the ancestral lines, but I can still picture the first main character and how he came to be a rich cop! LOL

And, you will always feel like you're in the midst of a family event... Even with the latest, which includes the Geezer book club (the club is a cover for solving mysteries) there is a feeling of kinship, of laughter, of warmth and sharing that also comes along with backgrounds of individuals which makes the pain and hurt even more poignant to read about... If you're looking for a long-time series or a quick read, do check Lauren Carr out, by entering her name in the right column and pulling up book after book that has brought pleasure to thousands if not millions!

“I’ve made absolutely no headway,” Doris told Helen as she took a seat across from her. “But I’m going to crack this case. All the book club has to do is identify her, then we can find out who killed her and stuffed her in a barrel.” A group of retired law enforcement investigators, the Geezer Squad pretended to be a book club—because they were afraid of what their families would do if they knew that instead of reading crime fiction, their parents and grandparents investigated true crime. Their latest case was The Lady in the Barrel. “Mom is obsessed.” Chris refilled his glass of lemonade and joined them at the kitchen table. “Aren’t you going to take a shower?” Doris asked. “You’re sweaty.” “I’ll take a shower before dinner. I just want to rest for a few minutes.” He reached across the table and slid his mother’s copy of the folder containing the details of that month’s cold case.
“Can you imagine contracting to have your deck rebuilt and finding a dead body encased in a barrel that has been there for decades?” “How do you not notice a fifty-five-gallon barrel under your deck?” Helen picked up the copy of the forensics report of the barrel’s contents. “Do you know what’s under our porch?” Doris asked with a wicked grin. “Our house is a hundred years old. There’s no telling what secrets the Matheson family has hidden inside these walls or under our floors.” “The key is the barrel.” Chris pointed a finger at the picture of the rusty barrel on the report Helen was scanning. “How many people have fifty-five-gallon barrels lying around? It isn’t something you just pick up at the local hardware store. If we contact the company that made the barrel, they may steer us toward the killer.” “That combined with the used motor oil they found inside with the lady,” Helen said, “That’s a lot of used motor oil. We’re talking about a service garage.” “So, the killer has to have some connection to automotive.” Chris picked up the picture of the composite sketch of the Lady. “What details has the forensic pathologist given us to narrow down our search of the missing persons database?” “He believes she was in her late twenties to early thirties,” Doris said. “Female. She had long blond hair. She was a bleached blonde. Five feet four inches tall. Weighed approximately one hundred and fifteen pounds. She had given birth at some point.” The three of them passed around the picture of a young woman with long blond hair. She was a pretty woman. “What was the cause of death?” Helen asked. “I doubt if she crawled into that barrel to die of natural causes.” “The investigators said she died of asphyxiation,” Doris said. “She’d been strangled.” “Strangling someone with your bare hands is up close and personal,” Chris said. “Whoever did this went to a lot of trouble to hide the body. The killer got the barrel, sealed it, and concealed it in a location he knew would remain undiscovered for a considerable period.” “The homeowner had lived in that house for three years,” Doris said. “Law enforcement completely cleared him. Law enforcement has accounted for every woman in his life. Francine researched every homeowner from the time the house was built forty years ago to the present and discovered no potential victims. One of her sources told me that law enforcement has done the same. There’s no missing woman connected to anyone who lived in or had any connection to the crime scene.” “Did they find anything else in the barrel besides the body and dirty motor oil?” Helen asked. “The victim wore white jean shorts and a blue and white striped shirt with shoulder pads,” Doris said, “Now the shoulder pads tell me that this murder must have taken place in the 80s. Shoulder pads were a big thing then.” Chris mentioned the house was built in ‘83. “Forensics determined the clothes were all upscale designer brands,” Doris said. “Even her underwear was expensive. We’re not talking about Rodeo Drive. But we are talking about Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s. The type of woman that people would notice if she had disappeared.” “That points to our victim having an expensive taste in clothes,” Helen said. “I’d say,” Doris said. “Not only was she wearing designer clothes, but jewelry, too. She also had diamond sand dollar earrings. We're looking at a woman with means.” “Someone has to have reported her missing,” Helen said. “We just haven’t found the report yet.” “Did they find any other jewelry?” Chris asked. “Wedding ring?” “Nothing. No purse or wallet or driver’s license giving her name,” Doris replied. “That’d be too easy,” Helen said while giving Sterling a cracker with a slice of cheddar cheese on it. “No hit with her DNA in the national database?” “Or familial DNA.” “You said she had given birth,” Helen cast a glance at Chris sitting next to her. “That means she’s someone’s mother. She’s got family out there looking for her.” “We’ll find her. The Geezer Squad is on the case.” Doris gathered the reports and cleared the table for dinner.
“How did your helpers do?” The sly grin on her face revealed she knew the answer to her question. Chris let out a sigh filled with exhaustion. He laid his head in his arms on the table. “The highlight was the last hour when Katelyn got a splinter in her finger. While Sierra, Victor, and Buck administered first aid, Nikki and I collected the last two truckloads of hay and hauled them to the barn.” “Three people to remove one splinter?” Helen asked with a laugh. “Katelyn takes after her grandma,” Chris said. “I never needed a splinter to wrap a man around my little finger.” Doris winked at Helen. “All I needed was to turn on my irresistible charm.” “Why didn’t you use your irresistible charm on Elliott to get him to help me bale hay?” Chris asked in a sleepy tone. “He would have, but he had to go help that friend of his down in Georgia. Do you know where you made your mistake?” Doris shook the case file at him. “You should have had a bigger family. When I was growing up on our farm down in southern West Virginia, hay season was a big thing. All our aunts and uncles and cousins would come out. The women would cook all day and make desserts while the men would be out baling and hauling in the hay. Then afterwards, we’d be eating and gathering around the bonfire and shooting off firecrackers.” She continued to recount stories about her childhood in rural Appalachia as she put away her research and prepared dinner. Their voices lowered to a very dull roar in Chris’s ears as he drifted off to sleep. “Who’s that?” His mother’s question crashed through his slumber.

Whoa, did you notice that the setting for at least part of this latest case is centered on West Virginia and Morgantown, where I used to live, as part of the search area? Carr is known for her novels being set in this particular area, but tapping into Morgantown was a bit more closer home for me. Made me connect more right from the beginning!

Before we go any further, this book starts out as a specific cold case, but becomes so much more that you will boggle at the complexity of your story line... So be prepared!

Christ Matheson is the ancestral main character; however, his wife, Helen, and her sister really set the stage for the entire book. You see, quite recently his wife's sister, Kassie, contacted her. The two sisters have been estranged in recent years... The girls lost both their parents at early ages. They both disappeared. Helen had been adopted and had a better life than Kassie who had been in several different homes during her childhood. But Kassie had come to realize that she needed to find some place--somebody--to be a part of a family for the rest of her life. She started with finding Helen and asking her to work with her to find out what had happened to her parents... And once that decision was made, of course, the entire Geezer group became part of the search. These individuals, by the way, all have some type of background that provides them a special expertise by which they can help in a formal criminal investigation. And when they started working a case, the pace, I must say, is much faster than any normal police procedural book you will ever read! LOL!

Once a plan has been made, they start the investigation, which almost immediately, led to the discovery of a body. It was not the girls mother, but the body did still wear costly jewelry, which could be identified and allow moving on to the next step in the search. In fact, each action that was discovered, soon resulted in the discovery of more bodies!

Just not the girls parents!

Staring out at the historic downtown buildings and the distant silhouette of Halliehurst Mansion against the forested ridge, Helen nodded. “Or maybe we just got bigger.” Her voice was quiet, laced with the weight of questions they’d carried for decades. They were here to uncover the truth about their parents, and in this quiet Appalachian town—gateway to endless trails yet rooted in its own stubborn history—that truth felt closer, and more daunting, than ever. Kassie turned at a light to take an exit ramp off the freeway leading into Elkins. “You can be the bad cop. You’re good at that.” Shooting a sideways glance at her sister, Helen ignored the dig.

“I used to entertain you kids by singing Dolly Parton songs.” “And play the guitar,” Helen said. “That was me.” Dani did a deep bow at the waist. “I perform most weekends at the local saloons.”

But soon they were traveling back to where the family clan was still living. Helen visited first and was immediately welcomed back with their pet name for her--this would be important as the search gets more tense! But an interesting event they discovered was that their mother had become involved with a group of call girls called the Suzy Qs, but she was known for her helping them with the business management rather than actually being involved... And all the SuzyQs that were still in town praised what their mother had taught them to be able to get out on their own and made a better life...

“Suzi Q was a class operation,” Dani said. “Didn’t any of you feel you were being exploited as sex workers?” Helen asked. “Nobody grows up saying they want to become a sex worker.” Trudy shrugged her shoulders. “In my case, I was being sexually abused by my stepfather. I ran away at sixteen–to Abby’s house. We had been best friends forever. I happened upon what Abby’s mother did for a living. I thought, why not charge for it? At least I could support myself. Your mother tried to talk me out of it.” “My grandmother was a prostitute.” Kassie stared at her uneaten slice of pizza. “My mother was a madam. My father came from a family of thieves.” “Oh, so you know about that,” Dani said in a matter-of-fact tone. “Do you ever regret taking up that line of work?” Helen asked. “I did what I had to do to survive,” Trudy said. “When it was time to turn the page on that chapter, I turned it and never looked back.” She leaned toward them. “Your mother wasn’t proud of what your grandmother did. She tried to get her out of that work. But just when she thought she was making headway, your grandmother would slide right back into it. She made good money, and she needed it to support her bad habits.” “Being level-headed, Abby could see things more clearly than any of us,” Stephanie said. “We all had baggage. Mostly low self-esteem. Abby knew we needed someone with a steady hand to guide and encourage us to look toward a future beyond Suzi Q.” “Use Suzi Q as a stepping stone to something better,” Helen said.

As with most stories these days, we soon are introduced to the fact that Helen and Kassie had come from the wrong side of town and had been frowned upon by those with money or power--and there is both. I really don't know whether it is on purpose, or whether every rich family acts like many political families or their rich neighbors, but we certainly have them in this book...

And that leads me to a point I especially wanted to mention about Lauren's books...Readers will be totally involved in "life..." with every facit... One minute the team will be involved in searching for possible cars in a waterway. While Helen, watches her sister dance in shadows as she waits for her friend who will be searching for any cars. Helen hides, not wanting to spoil her sister's moments of joy as she waits to have her close friend join them... For me, this helps to blunt the vision of the crimes that had been committed years ago, while, these breaks of wanting to be with a loved one allows us to gain warmth and safety, as we realize we are not alone in any type of tragedy... Carr excels at this type of twist and turn from one type of scene to another!

It was those in the higher class of town who conceived the story that Helen and Kassie's father had run away with a wife of another to go to Hollywood... But as the investigation developed in depth material, there was no evidence of their father being the man who had traveled out of state. Indeed, soon there was evidence that the woman he supposedly went with, was not the one who traveled out of town--in fact, did anybody? Yet the same rumor was repeated over and over and over, as if lies could make something false become true...

In fact, there was only one specific clue about, on the other hand, what had happened to their mother years later... And it was that Kassie, at age 5, had seen her mother get into a van with Pee Wee Herman... with his famous pinstriped suit... Could a child have correctly remembered that image for decades?

The group settled in, voices dropping lower, the office suddenly feeling smaller—and the stakes, somehow, larger. Outside, the dining room carried on with its usual clatter, but here, forty-five years of secrets had just surfaced...

“Can’t you see that those of us living in the present have lives to live? Some shadows are best left alone.” “Would you be saying that if it was your daughter who went missing and Destiny here had to grow up without her mother?”

You may think we are coming to the end of the story...but you'd be wrong...Wonderfully wrong!!! Because this author not only closes out every single issue/murder event, she presents a fantastic scene for each! Some are funny, some are sad, some reveal accountability which is much needed these days... You get the idea, right? Because this author is one of the best to be found for a totally unique type of family drama which happens to include exciting and intense scenes, one of which has to be read to believe, when Sterling acts to save the day! The signaling between Chris and his K-9 was so extraordinary, I'd defy anybody to figure out exactly how it occurred, unless you're a dog master too! LOL

“Always wanted to flatten high society. Feels better than I imagined.”

Helen and Kassie walked down the aisle together, heads high, family—blood and chosen—following to the front. The organ played “Amazing Grace.” Jethro stepped to the pulpit. “Dearly beloved,” he began, voice carrying to the rafters, “we gather to lay Michael and Abigail Hartman to rest—two souls taken too soon but never forgotten. They leave behind children who carried their light through the dark, and a family fractured too long. Today, that fracture mends.” He looked out over Hartmans, Suzi Q ladies, Geezers, and cousins. “Mike and Abby didn’t see this day. But I believe they’re watching. And I believe they’re smiling.”

Lauren Carr Presents New Series, The Prime Suspect--Includes New Setting! New Characters! But Same Great Mysteries!

Hey Everybody! Two of My Favorite Authors,
Lauren Carr and Cindy McDonald,
Who've been reviewed here...Now Have a Podcast! Check it out!

Sam’s mouth dropped open. “Cat had a sister who had committed suicide?” “It was maybe a couple of months before Cat disappeared. She told me she had postpartum depression. I guess Haley resented Cat for not doing more to help their sister, or maybe she wanted Cat to share in taking care of her baby.” “What about the baby’s father?” “I don’t think he was in the picture.” She shrugged her shoulders. “I’m just guessing. Cat never really told me anything except that her younger sister had a baby and she hung herself a few weeks later. Haley took in the baby. We never saw or heard from Haley. If it were me, I would have interrogated the roomies to find out what happened.” She shook her head. “Haley never even picked up Cat’s stuff after the semester ended. It was another girl, a childhood friend, who came to the apartment to clear out her stuff.”
Sam wrote notes of what she was saying in bullets down the length of the page. “What was the friend’s name?” Bryce narrowed her eyes. “I don’t remember. I only met her once.” He flipped to a blank sheet in the notepad. “What did you find when you searched Cat’s room?” “All of her toiletries and makeup were there. So was her school stuff. She wouldn’t have gone to the Outer Banks without her makeup and toiletries.” She jumped when she recalled, “Her laptop was missing. I couldn’t find that.” “You have a good eye for detail.” He shot her a grin of approval. “She would not have gone to the beach without her toiletries.” “I was the one who reported her missing. Would I have done that if I’d killed her?” “You’d be surprised how many killers report their victims missing to throw off suspicion.” He held up his hands. “Just saying.” He shook his head.
“What motive would you have to bury your roommate under a statue?” “Seriously? Do I look like a maniac?” “I don’t know.” Sam looked down at Cleo. “Does she look like a maniac to you?” Cleo turned her attention to Bryce. With a heavy sigh, she dropped her head down between her two paws. “Is that a yes or a no?” Bryce asked. “Based on our professional experience, we’ve found that maniacs don’t look like maniacs.” She sipped the last of her wine and gestured to the bartender for a second one. “How was she killed?” She jerked her chin at his notepad. “Have you found a cause of death in your research?” “The police aren’t releasing that information.” Sam shook his head in response to the bartender asking if he wanted another drink. His mug was half filled, and the beer had warmed to room temperature. “If anyone knows how she was killed, they would reveal themselves as the killer,” Bryce said with a nod of her head. “We didn’t see any sign of a fight or violence in the apartment. But then, the police never searched it for a crime scene.” “They only recently discovered that a violent crime had been committed.”
She leaned across the table. “Susan and I were gone that entire week. Erin was in and out. Whoever killed Cat could have done it in the apartment, got rid of the body at night when no one was around, and had plenty of time to clean up without being caught. “Until some drunken kids on ATVs crashed into the statue under which the killer dumped the body.” Sam referred to his notes and found out that her car, a red Chevy Cavalier, had been parked at Reston Metro. Her purse wasn’t in it. “It would have been easy for her killer to ditch the car at the metro and ride the train back to campus,” Bryce said. “Right now, the detectives are interviewing anyone and everyone in your and Cat’s worlds. They’re going to continue digging until they can find a motive for you to murder her. The best way that I can help you is to do the same—sift through the muck to find out who really killed Cat and your husband.”
“We’re not looking for one person.” Sam cocked his head at her. “How do you know that?” “I don’t. It’s just …” Her voice trailed off. “Dermot had never met Cat. Why would Cat’s killer go after Dermot?” “Maybe to get back at you for something. Maybe someone close to you, or someone who wants to be close to you, took out Cat and your husband for hurting you.”
He peered closely at her. “Tell me about your relationship with Cat.” “We weren’t friends.” Her tone was firm. “It was a four-bedroom suite. The four of us lived together for two years. I was in my last year in the architectural program. It was a five-year program. Erin and I were a year older than Susan and Cat.” “It sounds like you, Susan, and Erin have remained close all these years.” He made a note to interview Susan and Erin. “Erin and I were the first ones to move into the suite. We were there a year before Susan and Cat moved in. The university management would place the roommates together. We would get together occasionally for a movie night or meet for drinks or something like that. Susan made more effort to be friends than Cat. But …”
Her voice trailed off. His beer finished, he slid the mug aside and sat back in his seat. He arched an eyebrow at her. “I will find out. Better for you to tell me straight up than allow me to find out from elsewhere.” “I dated Justin Turner for close to a year.” Recognition filled his face at the sound of Justin’s last name. “Turner? Any relation to—” “Susan’s husband. Justin dated Cat for about six weeks between me and Susan.” “Cat stole your boyfriend?” His lips curled. He sat forward. “How did you feel about that?” Agitation crept into her tone. “I’m from a small town where everyone trusts everyone. Susan was the one who told me that Cat was hitting on Justin. I laughed. Justin was a teacher’s assistant for the department chair. He crossed paths with Cat and Susan every day. I assumed Cat was being friendly and Susan was reading too much into it.” She sighed.
“I could not see Cat ever being interested in Justin.” Sam’s eyes narrowed. “What was Cat’s type of guy?” “Rich. Handsome. Exciting.” She shrugged her shoulders. “Justin was Mr. Reliable. His idea of cutting loose was spicy buffalo wings.” His blue eyes narrowed in thought. “Why do you think Cat pursued him?” “Because she could,” Bryce said. “Cat loved nothing more than another woman’s man. Once she had him, the thrill was gone, and she dumped him. Cat stood him up—on Valentine’s Day, of all days. He showed up with an enormous bouquet and Cat was nowhere to be seen. Susan spent the evening comforting him. They ended up getting married a few months later.” “Did you and Cat have any blow-ups about her stealing Justin that potential witnesses could bring up?” Bryce gazed into the bottom of her wineglass in silence. When she finally spoke, she said, “I was never in love with Justin. He was just someone to go out with on the weekends. We never even slept together. I admit it offended me that Cat stole him from me, but it isn’t like it devastated me.” He flipped a page of the notepad to a fresh page.

“Tell me about the last time you saw Cat.” “It was late Friday afternoon. My last midterm exam was over at four-thirty. I had packed the night before. Everything was in my car, and I was ready to hit the road to go back home. But I had forgotten my laptop. I went racing back to the apartment to get it. Cat was dancing in the apartment when I ran in.” “She was dancing with whom?” “Herself. She was dancing alone.” Slowly, he nodded his head—digesting that information. “Haven’t you ever danced alone?” “Not really.” His eyes narrowed. “But then, I’m not a big dancer. What was she dancing to?” “Annie Lennox. ‘Money Can’t Buy It.’ I remember everything about the last time I saw Cat.” “I don’t know that song. But then, there are a lot of songs I don’t know. You came home, and you found her dancing alone in the apartment.” “She claimed she needed to blow off steam. She’d often do that. Especially that last semester.” She giggled at the memory. “She had just gotten her fingernails done. Cat had acrylic fingernails. They were long and elegant. She had had the same manicurist in Tysons Corner since she was a teenager. She had just gotten them done and had to show me. They had gradient black tips.” “I don’t know what that means,” Sam said with a frown. Bryce held out her hands. Her nails were tame compared to the other fingernails he had seen. They were pink with white tips. “Cat loved to try the latest nail styles. She had a standing appointment with Misty to get her nails done every other Friday. That day, she had gotten her nails done with black tips that blended into a beige color.” “How chic. Were Erin and Susan in the apartment when you were there?” She shook her head. “Cat told me she was getting dressed when the song came on and she started dancing. So here she is dancing half naked—” Sam’s eyebrow arched. “Half naked?” “Her bra, panties, and shirt.” “What floor were you on?” he asked. “Third.” “Were the blinds open?” She nodded her head. “Do you think a predator was watching and attacked her?” “I’ve investigated more than one murder where that was what happened.” “When I walked in and saw her spinning around the room, I told her she looked like a stripper. She said that was flattering. We had a good laugh. I grabbed my laptop and looked around one more time to make sure I wasn’t forgetting anything else. She told me she had to go to a party—” “Was she going with anyone?” “Richard,” she said in a soft voice. “Richard? The same Richard who had invited her to the Outer Banks? The one who she celebrated spontaneity with, according to her Facebook post?” “That’s another reason I didn’t buy that post. Cat wasn’t in love with Richard by any stretch of the imagination. She dated him off and on.” “Was he a student?” “I’d never met him. I noticed she had two phones—a regular phone with an account and one of those pay-as-you-go phones she used only to talk or text him.” “Burner phone,” Sam said with a frown. “How observant for you to notice that.” “I looked for it after she went missing, but couldn’t find it. I told the police about it, too. The detective said that they found no phone in her car. Did they find it with her body?” “I’ll check with my contacts about what they may or may not have found with her remains,” he said.
“I’ll also check to see if we can identify this Richard. It sounds to me like he was a married man working hard to conceal his mistress. If he was a professor at the university and she threatened to reveal their affair, he may have gotten rid of her to keep things under wraps. A professor would have access to the campus to bury her under the statue. How long had she been seeing Richard?” She let out a breath. “Off and on for the entire two years that she was living in our suite. She seemed to have money, but her family didn’t. Cat told me she got her money from tutoring. She got good grades, so I had no reason not to believe that. But then, I noticed the two different phones. She said that Richard was a powerful man, and he wanted to keep his private life private.” “But she was going to a party with him? I wonder how Justin felt about that?” “He was dating Susan by then. They were hot and heavy. What happened with Cat was water under the bridge.” Sam sighed. “Talk about drama.”

In a clever turn, Lauren Carr has moved from "Mac" Faraday, the main character

in her first wonderful series to Sam MacKade in her newest series! Hey Lauren, do you have an important "Mac" in your life?
One of your avid readers wants to know!  And, we already knew you love German Shepherds but
decided to "go dutch" so that we could meet Cleo and Gus... These two, I have to say, have promptly become your star characters! Along with Misha who truly won a place in my heart... I had to find Misha whose eyes would tell me that she was aloof, sassy, and, maybe, just, maybe, a one-person type of cat... In this case, not her owner! LOL

Seriously, folks, the three animal characters you will find in this book are extraordinary... Maybe it's due to the writer being a fluent animal conversationalist, but if my memory of all her earlier animals is correct, the relationship between the main character Sam MacKade, whose dogs are both service trained, is so beautifully intertwined that I actually wanted to reach out and talk to all of them myself...

And Sam MacKade? Yowza!!!
Sam was a canine officer. He’s on disability from the force after getting shot. Goody Two-Shoes was his partner.” “Goody Two-Shoes?” “The female. Gus is the Filthy Beast. They’re Dutch shepherds.”

I picked Cameron Diaz for the lead female character, at least in this book since she may or may not stay. After all, the Series is named after MacKade! Personally I think she will stay, since she was first to make the moves on Sam and even his ex approves! You can be sure, I'll be reading this series as it progresses!

So here's the primary thing you need to know, Cameron, aka, Bryce Greyson, is under investigation by the police for not one, but two, murders! One of which was her husband!

The first took place almost two decades ago while Bryce was in college. One of her roommates disappeared, presumed dead... Bryce was the one who reported her missing, so, of course, the local police decided to look closely at her involvement with the missing student... and never bothered to look further.

Eighteen years later they are still trying to prove Bryce is the killer, especially when her husband was murdered four years ago! So what happens where the police has their sights on one person who has alibis, but there is nobody else to consider? Well, of course, that's how cold cases develop!

Carr has moved into a setting which I know very well. A campus setting for Harrison University brings an interesting type of location for possible financial scams and readers will be both amused and, later, quite satisfied with how that all turns out... Because in the midst of Bryce desperately turning to Sam, who is now a licensed private investigator, to finally prove she is not guilty--by solving the case(s)--Yes, you will not "Believe" just how many "cold and ongoing cases" are exposed as Sam McKade starts putting all the clues together!

Seriously, in order to create a "murder board" for all the events that start being connected, it would take up an entire wall in one of the university classrooms! And it all began when the body of the student who had disappeared 18 years ago was discovered! Bryce was once more the target of the police...
A smirk crossed his face. “I’m guessing your daddy taught you everything there is to know about constructing houses. Hammering a nail. Leveling boards. Driving heavy equipment like a bulldozer or bobcat.” Her brow furrowed. Where is this leading? She did not like the expression on Detective Hughes’s face. She had nothing to do with Dermot’s murder. Why did she feel so guilty? Because she had seen and read a lot of stories about innocent people going to jail for things they had not done. “What does that have to do with Dermot’s murder?” “Didn’t you live in a suite at a university apartment complex off-campus while you were in college?” Unsure of where the detective was going, Bryce nodded her head. “Last month, some frat boys got drunk one night and went racing around the campus at J.W. Harrison with a couple of ATVs. One crashed head-on into J.W. Harrison.” “The statue?” There was a seven-foot statue of the university’s namesake in the center quad on campus. They had erected it on a three-foot cement base. The detective chuckled. “The kid flew over the front of the ATV and hit his head. Got a concussion.” “That’s too bad.” The impending feeling of doom prevented Bryce from being amused. “What’s your point?” “The collision cracked the statue’s cement base. Did so much damage that last week, a crew had to come in with equipment to lift the statue and tear apart the base to replace it.” A smirk crossed his face. “They found the skeleton of a young woman buried under the statue.” Bryce felt the blood drain from her face. She felt weak in the knees. “Cat Wessex.” “Dental records confirmed it today,” the detective said. “The original detective on the case has long since retired. We were going through the case file, and wouldn’t you know it? The name of one of Cat’s roommates at the time of her disappearance was—” “Two other students were living in our suite.” “Neither of them had a spouse gunned down. Nor did either of them know how to operate a crane to pick up that cement base and place it on top of Cat Wessex’s body.” “I was down in southern Virginia when Cat went missing!” “So you claim.” With a chuckle, the detective cocked his head at Bryce. “You know, most people go through their entire lives never knowing even one person who gets murdered. But you, Bryce Greyson, have the unfortunate experience of knowing two people who were violently killed while living with you. Now, what are the odds of that?”

This book also includes two younger adults, one a podcaster and one a news reporter. These two who were graduates from Harrison, provide the up-to-date tech expertise in searching for clues in identifying the who-what-when-where questions, while Sam slowly assimilates, merges, investigates, eliminates and then moves in to confirm... Of course, taking Cleo and Gus as backup! Wearing their service blankets, which saves Cleo from a mid-flight attack! And Misha? She acted on instinct and rids the world of at least one of the bad guys who had dared to enter her and Bryce's home!

You know, I wonder just how long this award-winning author took to conceive this book. The interplay and backward twists, together with the villains involved  is simply amazing. Once again, Carr has upped her game beyond anything I can remember--and I've read most of her books! Her mind weaves this way and that way in seemingly ease to produce an incredible number of cases ranging from years ago and up to the present. And the "only" twist I guessed was at the very end! At least I got that one right...

But it didn't end in just clearing the two cases that had been held against Bryce for years! Several side hustles were identified and brought out for public accountability! Think of various issues that are in the headlines often--and it will have been woven into one of the best mysteries I have ever read! The complexity, diversity of players together with the characters within the university setting lends to the authentic setting and environment that we find in America.

And Bryce MacKade? I was impressed! His training and discipline together with the vibe of love from his animal partners is unique to our world of cruelty. By the end of the story, Bryce and I were both in love with him! I don't remember I've ever had such an immediate affection for one male, lead character. I promise you will love him too! Lauren, when's the next Sam MacKade book out?!

No wonder Lauren has such loyal fans! Her books not only change in plot, but her writing mind keeps creating worlds of wonder in which we sink--gladly! Kudos! Lauren!

Happy Halloween with Lauren Carr's Shadow of Murder

Geography was not Teddy’s forte. After Dusty had finished cleaning up the kitchen while Erica took the long hot bubble bath in his tub, he poured a bourbon and sat out on the back deck to take in the night’s solitude. Landing on the porch railing, Teddy serenaded their host with a rendition of “Rocky Mountain High” by John Denver.

“We are not in the Rocky Mountains,” Dusty told Teddy, who thought he had requested “one more time.” Through the windows, Erica saw Teddy perched on the porch rail. The bird chattered nonstop at Dusty, who gazed up at the moon and the stars high above them.

"Quiet, Teddy,” Erica said when she joined them. She giggled in response to seeing his surprise at her wearing his red plaid flannel robe. “Britney’s idea of a bathrobe is quite—what’s the word? Skimpy. It’s more suitable for a honeymoon than stargazing.” She took a seat on the lounging chaise next to his.

“You look better in that robe than I do.” He shot a smile in her direction.

“You seem more relaxed.” “I am. You were right. A long soak in a hot bath and I feel human again. Thank you.”

“Hey, you cooked a delicious dinner. I can’t remember the last time our family had a real Sunday pot roast.” “You cleaned up. I think I dirtied every pot and pan you have in that kitchen.” “I guess we helped each other,” Dusty said. Silence dropped over the deck. They stared up at the sky and listened to the sounds of nature around them. He glanced over at her.

“Have you stayed away from Deep Creek Lake because of what had happened to your parents?” “Combination I guess. My responsibilities in northern Virginia with my son and husband gave me an excuse to escape what had happened in that house. My blog keeps me very busy. But I still have close friends who live here who keep me in the loop with what’s happening.”

“Your crew,” he said with a chuckle. “The last time I talked to David O’Callaghan was in October. The crew told me about a John Doe found in a car. David absolutely refused to comment on it.” She cast a sideways glance at him out of the corner of her eye. “Some kids flying a drone over the lake recorded the vehicle at the bottom. The police sent a diver to look. Sure enough, there was a car with a body inside. They brought it up. A source told Jayne that it had Florida license tags and that it had been in the water for several years. No name has ever been released. If he’s a missing person, his family has a right to know.”

“Which is where the Cold Case Diva comes in,” Dusty said with a nod of his head. “I am familiar with the case.” “But when I called David to ask if they’d identified the body and contacted the family, he shut me down.” “That’s because the feds took the lead. David and our police department don’t have any jurisdiction in that case.” “The feds?” She cocked her head and squinted at him out of the corner of her eyes. “Why? Did the body belong to a federal agent?”

When Carr shares her latest Whodunit, she just doesn't know when to quit... First, she introduces a Blog Diva as a main character, along with her crew, and then adds, a handsome Dude to save her right from the beginning... Then she adds Teddy a talking Cockatou that has memorized so many phrases, that readers will begin to think that he is actually talking to those around him... on and on and on, we get to know and love the latest characters in her most famous, and first, mystery series...

But when you mix murder, religion, demons and those who practice wicca, you've got a whodunit that just won't quit! Whodunit when a body turns up on the grounds of a home that has just been purchased by Tristan, Mac Faraday's son... And, when an accountant turns up poisoned, we all wonder whodunit... Only to then, in the investigation, learn that Erica Hart, the death of the Diva's parents may have been something totally different than was reported... Whoa... Let's backtrack a little, OK?

Erica Hart is coming back to her home town, when, as she gets closer and closer, is startled by something dark coming out in front of her car, causing her to swerve and ultimately land into Deep Creek Lake!

And Teddy Saves Her!

Well, kinda, Teddy left at Erica's urging to go find help and when he was seen by the local police, he starts talking!

Nope! Can't get that far in...because in the Prologue! The Prologue! She presents a mass murder to scare us into shock... So I, at least, am spending most of my time reading and wondering...when is it going to happen? Seven Killed!

OMG, Lauren, You more than grabbed my attention! You shook my beating heart into, for the first time ever, wanting to go to the end of the book to find out how it ends! Evil is indeed alive and well... but... Can good really win over such evil?!

So...since I'm all upset and planning on reading until I finish the book...you all are just going to have to wait too!

Later... Be careful of spooky things that cast shadows...

REMARKABLE!

BEST BOOK EVER!

Well, let's just say that Carr will really have to work HARD to surpass this outstanding novel!

The complexity and interconnections between all that is happening is impossible to discuss without giving away too much. I consider this a must-read for mystery/suspense lovers!

You know, folks, the climax for this book was not near the end. I think that was done purposely... Because, with all of the violence that is happening daily in America, through those who lie to gain power, it behooves each of us to look around us and see exactly what is happening. When we see attempted murder of an older man, wanting to kill his wife...we know it is evil. We must point it out as wrong... Because when you decide to mess around with drugs and people who openly hate, harm or incite others to do something wrong, we cannot afford to NOT speak Truth!

VENGENANCE IS MINE!

Saith The Lord!

And I believe God's Watching America Right Now!

And Don't You Think He's Very Sad,

Especially When People Claim to Follow Him

While lying, inciting violence...

And doing things to make people afraid to even vote!!!

Coming Home with Lauren Carr's Newest Series - Nikki Bryant Cozy Mystery Series--Killer Deadline and The Wrong Side of Murder!

There's a Reason Especially for Sharing This Vid--
Find BRH!

Getting an email that one of your favorite authors has a new book out is just like getting an unexpected present! Especially, when there are already two out in the new series! I've been reading Lauren Carr since her first "Mac" book, so I was excited to see that she's taken a small genre turn for a cozy mystery series! One thing I know about any of Carr's books! There will be animals, a well-spun tale with tails that will add plenty of humor as well as one that will keep you guessing to the very end!
Having once had a boxer dog in our family many years ago, I got a special memory of Duke (Elmo in the book) who we loved dearly... And a pleasant memory from meeting my first Sphinx cat...
For someone who loves cats, it was still a surprise to meet my first hairless cat...especially, when she snuck into my bed that night and cuddled! I have to say that I fell in love at that point! Her name was Barbara, but the two cats in this series have the delightful names of Ethel and Lucy... Unfortunately, they are not thrilled when Elmo entered their lives! But I found a video that bodes well for the future of the three! LOL

Oh, great! Ashleigh Addison is here. So help me, if she’s Ryan’s date—What are you thinking? You walk through the door and suddenly you’re back in high school!
~~~
If anyone had told me five years ago that I’d be human to a canine social media influencer, I would have told them that the world would have to go mad first. Little did I know.” Together, they strolled toward the front door. “Do you get that a lot? People wanting to be photographed with your dog?” Nikki laughed. “Would you believe during the last governor’s race in Nevada, both candidates offered me $500 to have their pictures taken with Elmo and posted online?” She paused with her hand on the door handle. “Apparently, being Elmo’s friend increases your cool factor ten percentage points—according to their campaign managers.” “Did you take the money?” “Of course, I did. I’m no fool.” They stepped through the cut-glass doors into the foyer. Shrieks of delight from the game room located in the finished basement told Nikki where her dog had gone. Debra deserted Nikki to give chase after her granddaughter, who she saw zeroing in on the dessert table in the formal dining room. “Elmo is working the crowd, as always.” Kathleen Bryant declared while descending the staircase from the upper floor to greet her daughter. “Welcome home, darling.” She took Nikki into a warm hug. As they parted, a wicked grin crossed Kathleen’s face. “I hate to say this, but it is slightly pathetic that your dog is more sociable than you are.” “Elmo’s a party-animal. No one is more sociable than he is.” As the words exited Nikki’s mouth, a loud high-pitched screech erupted from the game room. Two hairless creatures, one red and the other gray, scurried up the stairs, down the hallway, and into the parlor. Both wore rhinestone collars to indicate that they were house pets. The curious boxer dog was in pursuit. Unable to gain traction on the shiny hardwood floors, his giant paws slipped and slid under him. Nikki chased after him. The cats jumped onto a loveseat and arched their backs. If they had hair, it would have been on end. They hissed at the dog. Nikki grabbed Elmo by the collar and lifted him so that his front paws were off the hardwood floor. “Elmo! Stop! They’re not armadillos! They’re cats!” Kathleen gasped. “What would make him think they were armadillos?” “Well…” Nikki flicked her eyes in the direction of the two hairless Sphinx cats. “Have you taken a good look at them?” The two felines growled at Elmo, who peered at them with intense curiosity. He so wanted to take a closer look at these animals that resembled some he had seen in the desert. “I never,” Nikki’s mother groused. She left the scene before it got too embarrassing. “Elmo, these are the evil stepsisters I’d told you about,” Nikki said. “Meet Lucy and Ethel. The red one is Lucy. The gray one is her sidekick.” His eyes wide, Elmo regarded the two creatures. He licked his stubby snout and looked back at her. “I know they don’t look like it, but they’re cats.” Elmo got his nose as close as he dared to take a sniff at Lucy, who swiped at him with her needle-like claws. With a snort and a shake of his head, he backed up. “Didn’t I warn you? Don’t turn your back on them.”
Starting the first in a series is always fun, but especially with Lauren Carr... For this series, Carr had picked out pets who are not well known, at least in books... Nikki Bryant is coming back to her home town to take over the family's television station, which has been run by her mother, after her father had been murdered. Yes, his murder had never been solved, so Nikki is hoping to look at this cold case as soon as possible.
Her mother had remarried and was now running a beautiful bed and breakfast with her husband, who happens to be the father of Nikki's first love... Yes! if you're thinking...Oh Boy!... you're right! For Nikki has never forgotten him and now, given this marriage, she had become her first love's...step-sister! Geesh!
Seriously, you can imagine what will be happening in this book as Nikki struggles with her personal, and totally unwanted set of circumstances she is now facing. And I, and you, I know, will be loving every word that is thrown back and forth between the two, especially since he is now head of the crime lab for the police! And they'll be working together.
Nikki is now a well-known investigative journalist and has won many awards for her work in helping to solve cases. So, while proud of her own background, she must now face all of those who were frenemies while in school years ago... One of which is now a homicide cop! Dialogue is fantastic as personalities flare and lower as Nikki moves to take over the reigns of a news oriented station.
Then when she finds out that two women, who were not very good as news anchors even when she was still around, are still there, and in prime times, she sees a real problem... Why weren't they fired long ago? Surely something had prevented it? Or was she missing something? One of those two actually became a rival years ago when she went after, Ryan, Nikki's boyfriend! And, of course, she, Ashleigh, was the one who was murdered! Leaving Nikki having her past thrown back at her...
“Come on, dear,” Conner urged his wife. “Have your picture taken with Elmo.” “I’m not posing with any dog,” Ashleigh said. “Especially an ugly one. His face looks like he rear-ended the back of a truck.”
“At least he has a fan base,” Conner said. Ashleigh’s eyes grew wide. “Uh, oh. This isn’t going to be pretty,” Julie warned Nikki. Gripped with fear of the impending scene, the party guests scattered. Ryan held out his arm to ease Nikki back. Sensing a change in the atmosphere, Elmo stood in front of Nikki while facing Ashleigh.
 “And you think I don’t?” Ashleigh asked in a low tone. “Used to. Not so much anymore,” Conner said. Ashleigh waved her hand. “Did you see the crowd that turned out this past July for Summer Fest? Hundreds turned out.”
“They turned out for the local pop singer whose song had made the top-40,” Conner said. “They didn’t come for you. The truth of the matter, Ash, is this. Beauty fades. Brains and talent are forever.” He gestured at Nikki. “Nikki is a perfect example. What she lacks in looks, she’s made up for with brains and talent. Her brains will take care of her long after her breasts and butt droop. You, Ashleigh, your beauty got you to the anchor desk, but where are you going to go from there? You’re a has-been. A dog with a pushed-in face has a bigger following than you.”
Ashleigh looked around at the guests staring at her. She responded by slapping Conner across the face. “I’m not a brainless twit!” She spun around. “You just wait. All of you! You just wait. Monday evening, six o’clock news, I’m going to break a story that is going to have every news journalist across the country talking.” She gestured at Nikki. “Even the award-winning Nikki Bryant will be in awe.” She whirled around to eye all of them before elbowing her way out the door and into the darkness. “That was weird,” Nikki turned to her mother. “What story is she talking about breaking?” “I have no idea,” Kathleen said while opening the back door for Lucy and Ethel to scurry out like two over-sized rodents...
Mr. Trumbull, a tall man with long, lean muscles and a winning smile, stopped at the table where Ryan and Jodi were working. He leaned over to ask a question. With a smile, Jodi gazed up at the teacher while Ryan answered. Nodding approval, Mr. Trumbull moved on. Suzanne said, “Any boy would consider himself lucky to have Jodi lick his wounds and other parts of his body.” “Like he stands a chance with Jodi Gibbons,” Nikki said. “She’s a sophomore. She’s got her driver’s license.” Suzanne leaned toward her and lowered her voice. “My sister Claire waits tables at the diner next to the insurance company where Jodi’s mom works. She found a used condom in the trash can in her bedroom. Jodi laughed in her face when she tried to ground her. I mean, like how can she ground her? Her mom works two jobs. She bartends on the weekends. Jodi can do whatever she wants. Who’s going to stop her?” Her voice trailed off when the principal, accompanied by two sheriff’s deputies, entered the lunchroom. A hush fell over the room. The principal craned his neck until he spied the student he was seeking. Like the other students in the room, Jodi Gibbons looked up in curiosity. The principal hurried to her table and spoke to her in a low tone. She shoved her books into her backpack. Her curiosity piqued; Nikki’s eyes met Ryan’s. Wordlessly, she asked him what was going on. His response was a shrug of his shoulders. One could have heard a pin drop when the principal led Jodi to the sheriff’s deputies, who escorted her out.
After a Prologue which takes readers back to what happened during their high school years, Nikki is now in her new position and accepting an award for another investigative newstory... for excellence in media! Nikki admitted to herself that it was one of the reasons she had decided to take on her new job--the ability to decide what stories would be covered! Plus the fact that her first love was still in town...and single!
And it was in celebration of that award that Nikki and Ryan showed up at a local bar to have a nightcap... and Nikki recognized the woman serving them. Jodi! There was no way that the death of her mother wouldn't come up, so Nikki started talking with her. Jodi admitted that she had been upset mainly because nothing had ever been done to solve the crime--thus she was condemned by public opinion and had to live with both the loss of her mother and...her own reputation. You guessed it. Nikki was soon on the hunt and offered to talk with Jodi to see if they could actually solve the still cold case that had occurred about 20 years ago...
About the same time that her father had been murdered...
I read these books backwards, since I didn't know at the time I started to read that it was the second book. Do yourself a favor if you've haven't read the first one. These two books are so intertwined that I just couldn't wait to have the entire story... You know, how people often say of relationships that "it's complicated?" Well, Carr is famous for having two or more mysteries going on at any given time. That's what makes her stories so fascinating, addictive and totally satisfying!
Family life is fun and somewhat frantic as readers meet Nikki's sister, her mother, her step-father (Ryan's Dad) and Trudy who is the comfort food provider for anybody in town who needs to be...comforted! LOL
But, most of us, we will watch as Ryan, introduces being more than a step-brother to Nikki... Actually, there's a tease that readers will quickly guess, but Lauren's keeps it playing throughout the two books... Seriously, it is such an easy thing that could occur these days on the internet; but since it remains a secret almost through both books, it's a gem that readers will savor, wondering just when it will end... or moe on to the next stage, we hope! Carr even makes romance different and intriguing...and always, it seems, something new! Where she gets her ideas, I haven't a clue, but she continues to be one of the top writers for me and, believe me, if you haven't already found her books, do check them out!
But I have to admit, my favorite is still her first series! and so I'm thrilled to be able to say...NEXT is
Hey Lauren, I'm so happy to be back spending time with you and all of your Words! Love you! Bet you haven't had any other reviewer dedicate a song to you! LOL
God Bless,
Gabbie
