Hopping Along with Oneeka Williams - The Year of Positivity! A Short Message About Love -- And Share Not Today Negativity!

 

I first met Oneeka through her persona, Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo! Dr. Williams is a role model and mentor for children, supporting her desire to encourage a career in science! Her series, features Dr. Dee Dee, who travels to planets across the universe! I loved all of them and quickly realized just how much Dr. Williams was both concerned and involved with children, especially Black children, reaching for all that they can be! So, I hope you had a  valentine day with those you love and are loved by! When I saw the Facebook post on Valentine's Day, I responded and immediately asked if I could share her words through Book Readers Heaven and she graciously  agreed...  Check out Oneeka on Facebook! 

Through Dr. Williams, I learned more about an issue that has always bothered me: Women should submit to their husbands...   1 Corinthians 13. I have seen how many men treat their wives! And it is not as Jesus would do! I remember a woman who went to a church many years ago, praying, publicly for her husband, who never attended church, nor even seemed to be aware of his wife's strong faith...  Then I met women who could not do anything without their husband's permission...even going to a movie with a female friend... Even now, in the chaos of today, there is a battle being wrought, isn't there? Banning books, white fragility, (but that's on another page...), and just how badly respect for women has been lost or ignored! 

I knew early in my life that I would be one who strongly supported the rights of women, joining professional organizations to learn more, then turning to organizational groups that worked to enhance the rights of women--Council for Women's Concerns, The Staff Council, and more... 

Even when a pastor asked me to lead a weight-losing group at church, I challenged him, asking whether or not he really wanted a single professional woman leading a group that was mostly married women... He handed me a book. I read it since he asked me to... When I went back to church, I asked him solemnly, "When can I move in?" He looked at me and asked what I meant. "Well, this book tells me that the church was to take care of single women who could not financially support themselves, without a husband--yes, it was that old a volume, or was it?! So I went on to ask..."So when are you and the church going to start taking care of me, financially? Well, I admit, I couldn't finish, without laughing...and he laughed too... But then, it really wasn't a laughing matter was it? The church has not really been kind to women in many ways, I have found... So I was thrilled when Dr. Williams did a little literary research on the meaning of the word submission...

 

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

 Whenever I had heard speakers about "submission of wives..." they never went beyond that basic statement... So I had gone on to read the "entire" scripture! My argument then became, to instantly move on to what the role of the husband was... He was to love his wife as Christ loved the Church...Specifically, he died for us! All of us! Of course, not ever proceeding into marriage had left me, maybe speaking, my own interpretation... Not so, for check out the following reference by Oneeka Williams!

Do submission and love go together? 

Is submission important in a relationship?

Am I submitted to my husband? Is my husband submitted to me?

A few years ago, the leader of the women’s ministry at my church asked me to lead a workshop on submission at the women’s retreat.

Many of my friends had difficulty reconciling the request, as submissive would not have been an adjective that they applied to me! Truthfully, I was also scratching my head as to how I would pull this off!“Submission” has had a negative connotation in relationships and when I asked my husband if he thought I submitted to him, his answer was a resounding NO! The traditional expectation of submission was not important to him. But what of the many other women who had a different experience in their marriage?I went DIGGING! I had to understand where the word came from. What I found gave me and every woman in my workshop LIFE!

The Greek word for “submission” is hupotasso which means to “get under and lift”.

It does not mean obedience!I could redefine the traditional understanding of “submission” to spotlight the Power and Partnership that was baked into its original intent.
POSITIVE PARTNERSHIP…When my husband is weak, I am strong, and I get under and lift!(AND)
When I am weak, he is strong, and he gets under and lifts!
I am empowered in our relationship! WE ARE THE WIND UNDER EACH OTHER’S WINGS!

I've always enjoyed what I call a broad spectrum of self-help books. They can be life enhancing, inspirational, or even daily scripture/article books... One thing I like about getting this type of book in electronic form is that I can read at my own time frame and easily return to my place in the book. I picked two of these books this week and wanted to share a little about the one by Dr. Williams...

How many stories do you keep hidden?

What would you do if you knew your stories had the power to heal yourself and others? You would probably start shouting at the top of your lungs to anyone who would listen. I’m beginning my shout today! How about you?

Sharing my stories with you has been such a healing journey. I believe you will also find the healing path in your stories by journeying with me through mine. Even in the toughest of times, you will learn to craft your own stories in a way that heals hearts, restores bodies and minds, elevates you above your circumstances and empowers you to take action. I truly believe I was born on the Island of Positivity!

Does that mean that I have been shielded from negativity? No! Despite the number of times that life’s problems have steamrolled me, with the help of God’s amazing grace, I have picked myself up, dusted myself off, squared my shoulders, assumed a defiant stance, sprinkled in some spunk, and said, “Not today!” Not today, fear! Not today, worry! Not today, anxiety! Not today, insecurity! Not today, defeat! Not today, negativity!

Negativity is like a villain hell-bent on stealing every good thing in our lives, but we can fight back and protect our birthright. We are often held captive by our problems because we think that problems and negativity are partners. They are not! We know problems are a part of life, but when we allow them to marry negativity, they become a formidable couple that can come at us so ferociously that we buckle under the onslaught. How many of you have had days when you have…

Felt so overwhelmed by problems and circumstances that you crawled back into bed and shut down? Felt exhausted, afraid, and alone? Felt so diminished and devalued by toxic relationships or environments that you became physically ill? Looked at a world where the odds seemed stacked against you and felt discouraged about the future? Felt like you were working hard, but the harder you worked, the more stuck you became? Wondered how you could find the positives when the world seemed to be drowning in a sea of negatives? I’ve had those days! Are you shocked? A successful, Harvard-educated urologic surgeon and award-winning author with everything going for her, has felt this way too? How can that be?

Let me tell you. Training and working as a female surgeon in a male-dominated world meant that I had my fair share of those days. No one is exempt from tough times. It’s part of being human. What do we do during those times? Do we throw up our hands in defeat? Or, do we get out of bed and declare with some attitude and some spunk, “Not today, negativity, not today!?”... There is power in awareness. 

Imagine 5 Habits of Positivity as armor, to not only protect your health but also to add pep to your step and confidence that drives your hand up to negativity, indifference, envy, feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, and judgment. A shield that helps you to not only cope, but also hope and believe that: 

There is always a solution; I just have to work to find it. (HOP #1) 

I can convert a limit into an opportunity. (HOP #2) 

I’m going to hold on to the positives and discard the negatives. (HOP #3) 

My purpose is uniquely designated and linked to how I can help someone. (HOP #4) 

I can always find reasons to be thankful and believe that there are no limits. (HOP #5) 

I wasn’t born reciting these Habits of Positivity. As I looked back on my journey to becoming a urologic surgeon, award-winning author, and Positivity Catalyst, I realized I was using the Habits without knowing. That was likely why I didn’t remain discouraged and disenchanted. When I dissected each of the situations that I describe in this book—and so many more—common coping themes emerged. Those themes all revolved around finding some vestige of positivity, pushing myself out of bed, squaring my shoulders, and being intentional in saying “Not today” to negativity. 

And why does this matter? Because we have to take part in building a kinder and more caring, inclusive, equitable, respectful, and healthy world, not only for ourselves but also for our children. We are only as strong as our weakest links. As long as we allow negativity’s offspring (hate, discrimination, racism, misogyny, xenophobia, bullying, all forms of abuse) to grow, they will continue to weaken our society, prevent real social justice, erode innovation and progress, and hinder economic development. 

We have to eliminate the places where limited thinking and negativity thrive. We can do this by creating Positivity Scaffolds one habit at a time. It starts with you! When you create your Positivity Scaffold, you can build everything in your home upon it. The effects ripple out like a pebble dropped into a lake to touch your family, coworkers, community, city, state, country, and the world. The more conscious you become of practicing these Habits of Positivity, the more you will connect to your unlimited inner power. 

I don't know about you, but I need to be more positive during this time of deep division in America. It has been hard to see what has and is happening, without becoming worried for the future. Yet, deep inside, I "do" know that God is in control--even while I strive to act, I find myself being pulled back to depression and frustration. 

Dr. Williams writes in such an upbeat way that readers can't help but get excited again... She lights a spark of optimism that allows us to feed on her spirit to be positive and not give in to all those feelings that are being purposely incited these days--lies, prejudice, hate, fear, and all things negative that hammers on our emotional stability.

The key for me was that Dr. Williams will be sharing her own stories! How often, when somebody does that, it clicks our own memory of how we reacted to a similar situation. Was it demoralizing at first? Perhaps, but if we are who I think each of us is, we soon strive to move forward, to find important positive words to help us...

What is provided in this book is a formula, a platform of habit building... I've known that we had to make changes through habits... But we often fall back, don't we? I'm ready to try again... Are you?

Delightful Coloring and Activity Book Complements BEEMORE BREAKTHRU

I was delighted to learn that Oneeka Williams had created a complementary coloring and activity book to go with her outstanding Children's Book, BEEMORE BREAKTHRU!

You would never guess what I was most excited about... Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo and two of her friends, Marky Medicine Bad and Kyle, have been made into paper dolls! Such a gift of flashback memories when paper dolls were a very important part of play life for little girls... Inside are additional outfits to be worn. And I was pleased to see that all of Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo's medical friends were included as well...

The life cycle of the bees has been repeated and as you color, you will be able to study the steps of the life of each bee...We all know, now, how the phrase "busy as bees" was started! 

Then we get to work a crossword puzzle...but it's all based upon what has been taught in the book...another test, fun, but still a test...😡 But, not to worry because the answers are provided and you'll be able to still keep on learning about those busy bees...

A bit of science coloring is provided when the various parts of a bee are provided...the antenna, wing, stinger...and, did you remember that bees have two stomachs? No matter what page, there is always something more to be learned...For instance, do you know how many Queen Bees there are in each hive?

There are word search puzzles, searching through a maze to find nectar, and all other sorts of games to help readers learn about the world of bees. Why, you even get to color the Bee Cake that appeared in the main book...together with all the people who attended the neighborhood party!

Governor Andy Charles, Governor of the Island of Positivity, even presented Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo and the Team with the Highest Medal of Service and a big Thank You... The Beemore Breakthru had been a success on the Island...All of the Bees had become BEEROES! Do you know what that could mean?

You'd better be practicing up your coloring while you wait to get this book, because the pages are very detailed and you'll want to be sure to color within the lines, right? But, most of all, have fun and enjoy this additional book, provided by Oneeka Williams, M.D. just so you'll have an opportunity to make learning about bees something that you'll spend time working on day after day... 

Highly recommended as a complementary book to the BEEMORE BREAKTHRU book , or even as a standalone... Best, in my opinion, having both...one for your long-term library and one to play and learn the material...

Dr. Dee Dynamo's Back at BRH in Latest Children's Learning Adventure by Oneeka Williams, M.D,

I was so pleased to be contacted regarding the latest book featuring Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo! As I snoop around the Internet, I found this pic of the author and immediately realized that this was the real Dee Dee Dynamo, don't you think?! She is a role model for both young children and adults females as she shares the attitude of "I can do it!" In fact, I enjoyed listening to the following when her first book in the series came out. Her desire to support women in the sciences is very important for children as they dream of what they want to be when they get big! This is the time to plant the seeds since we don't know the fear of failure as children! That is the time for sharing that each child can be whatever they want to be when they are old enough... 

If you haven't already read the second book in the series, do check out my review. Her latest continues the adventures of a doctor who fixes just about anything she's ask to fix and her abilities have taken her out of this world to other planets! Cool, right? Children not only have a wonderful time working along side Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo, but also learn much about astronomy. In fact you and your children may be learning together, just as I did reading these fantastic books!

  Saturn Surprise

The Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo children's series, as well as her other work, has won the author, Dr. Oneeka Williams, the 2014 Science Club for Girls Catalyst Award. If you know nothing else about her, just reading her children's book series will give you an understanding for the award. When I read my first book, I was surprised that we were heading into outer space! But what better place can a doctor use all of her scientific experience where there is nobody else to help!

Everything that Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo works with is magical and helps her do her work--even the medical instruments, like scissors. For instance, Simon Scissors--See him and the others in this pic--is his name! Do you name the various items you use daily? Well, when they are called for an emergency, each one has to know exactly what to do, so Simon Scissors, for instance, knows to immediately run and jump into Marky Medicine Bag, along with all the others so that Dr. Dee Dee is ready to quickly respond...
Now check out her wrist! That's Wyndee Watch and that is how Dr. Dee Dee gets all her messages and requests for help!

"Freeda and Kyle, please
prepare the team and

Buzz! Buzzzzzz! Her wrist vibrates and she looks down at Wyndee Watch. Wyndee's screen illuminates and Gordon the Gullible Clobe appears, spinning and flashing his blue lights. Dr. Dee Dee turns up Wyndee's volume.

WAHOO! WAHOO! WAHOO!
Gordon's alarm pierces the air, startling the other Planetarium goers.

"What is it, Gordon?" Dr. Dee Dee whispers.

"I heard sounds of pandemonium coming from Saturn--and when I looked out I saw that his rings were gone! Something is terribly wrong," says Gordon.

"Are you sure, Gordon? asks Dr. Dee Dee. "There are times when we cannot see Saturn's rings from Earth, you know. When this happens, it is called "ring plane crossing,' But the rings are still there."

"I'm sure, Dr. Dee Dee. We have to go!" Gordon insists.

"Sounds like we have a new mission," says Dr. Dee Dee thoughtfully. She pushes the alert button on Wyndee. It sends a shockwave signal to her team that it is time for another adventure.

"oh dear," says Freeda sheepishly. "I am so sorry. I mistakenly
entered the letters SAUURN instead of SATURN and the
GPS rearranged it as uranus."
"Don't worry, Freeda, we all make mistakes," says Dr. Dee
Dee reassuringly.

Lukas, who had been visiting the planetarium with Dr. Dee Dee, was curious and started asking questions immediately. He wanted to know why Saturn would lose its rings. So, like the helper that she is, Dr. Dee Dee takes the time to share with Lukas and readers all about what she knows about Saturn.

But then she admits that she has no idea why there would be a commotion coming from Saturn, noting that something else must be going on...

Whiles she's sharing with Lukas, Freeda, who is the Flying Ambulance that takes the team to the emergency, is gathering everybody together, picks them up, and then sets the GPS for Saturn...at least she thought she did, but they all wound up at Uranus! Do you know where that is?

Note that Uranus is right next to Saturn...then look up to see the relationship to Earth...

Now some may have already heard of the Cassini mission. But Lukas and Kyle were surprised when the first thing they were asked, by the Saturn planet, was if they were with the Mission? Everybody could tell that Saturn was tired and frustrated and admitted that since they had come in 1997, he and his rings had no privacy and now none of his secrets were secrets anymore!

Well, Dr. Dee Dee quickly introduced herself and explained why they had come. Fortunately Saturn had heard from Pluto what she had done for him so he immediately started to tell her... Instead of circling the planet like a circle, some were slanted, circling on their own without coordinating with the others! Saturn begged for help!

"My rings have gone stark raving mad. They don't want to be rings anymore."

"All of them?" asks Dr. Dee Dee.

"All of them!" complains Saturn. "A, B, C, D, E, F and G!"

"Poor Saturn," says Marky Medicine Bag. "This looks like a disaster. What are we going to do, Dr. Dee Dee?

Would you believe by the time that Dr. Dee Dee finished her review of the situation, she created the "Do The Saturn Dance" for everybody to dance and get the rings right back where they were supposed to be! You'll have to work hard to learn how to do it...it includes some crazy moves like the Electric Slide, the Moon Ring and more! Better get your dance shoes out so you can help Dr. Dee Dee and the rest of her team as they all work together to fix Saturn's Rings!

There is one character that deserves a special mention...His name is Kyle and he's someone who seems to always be negative about trying things...If you know somebody like that, you'll be able to see how Dr. Dee Dee loving scolds him at the same time he's an important member of the team...There are many small samples of this type of interpersonal relationship learning that is being taught while children

enjoy all that is happening. 

This series continues to be both high quality in the book format, the fantastic art work within, as well as one of the best children's books I've reviewed in relation to the high level of educational value provided. The creativity and imagination in turning medical instruments, such as when getting shots, into Sydnee Syringe, who can become a friend to everybody, certainly nonverbally helps children learn that the doctor is someone who is there to help in whatever way possible. I'm so happy Dr. Dee Dee invited me on her latest adventure! Saturn has a lot to learn about, so make sure your children and friends get the chance to meet her too!

Now is a good chance to add book characters that your child may not have previously had the opportunity to meet through their favorite books! This book and the series is an excellent learning experience in many very

important ways... Highly recommended!

About the Author

What do you get when you combine a science teacher with a journalist? A surgeon who writes poetry and children’s books!

My childhood was filled with the joys of discovery and exploration as my science teacher Mom took every opportunity to expose us to the wonders of science. On the other hand my Dad shared his passion for writing and I grew up writing poetry for every occasion including birthdays, holidays and family reunions. I still have fond memories of an essay competition that my twin brother and I entered on ‘Windows to the Sea’ which was designed to highlight the overdevelopment of the Barbados beachfront. We each wrote our essays independently but when our teacher looked at them, they complemented each other so well that we combined them into one essay and won the competition.

Growing up in the tropics was an incredible experience. I appreciate it now even more, as my husband and I raise our son in the cold New England winters. Every year we ask ourselves the same question, why are we still here? My Dad dug a fishpond for us in the backyard of our home in Guyana and we fished almost every weekend. Ever so often we would catch an eel that had snuck into the pond from the neighboring alley to feast on our fish and this was always accompanied by much excitement. There was always adventure and exploration.

I love science and always knew I wanted to be a doctor. I even performed minor surgery as early as age 12 when one of my classmates ripped her earring out of her ear lobe and I came to the rescue.

My journey took me first to Johns Hopkins University, ‘the pre-med capitol’. I then went to Harvard Medical School, followed by Massachusetts General Hospital and Lahey Clinic for surgical training. All along the way my creative outlet continued to be writing and interior design. I love painting, remodeling, renovating, upholstering furniture and landscaping.

I have always participated in various community volunteer programs with young people. One weekend, as I was cutting into cow hearts at a girl’s science club activity and finding engaging ways to present the physiology, it occurred to me that I wanted to write books that would share my love for science and medicine. I was inspired by my Mom who has written several science texts.

Check out the cover of a children's book and you can pretty well tell if it's one to acquire for your permanent children's library! This one definitely is! Other than the picture of Dr. Dee Dee, I found the most compelling were the inclusion of various medical instruments and each had a name! How wonderful an idea that can be effectively used to help children understand about going to see a doctor and what instruments he or she might use... especially "Sydnee Syringe"! Nobody likes getting shots, no matter how old we are! And having that stethoscope being placed on our chest for the first time, just might be what leads some children to play doctor and even dream of becoming one!

Freeda the Flying Ambulance is ready and
waiting. "Are all the instruments ready?"

"They are clean, sharp, and ready for
action, Dr. Dee Dee!" says Marky with
gusto.

So after I'd been introduced to "Marky Medicine Bag", "Ana Anesthetic" and even "Simon Scissors", I was interested enough to start looking around on the Internet... I just had to include Dr. Williams' Mission statement. When writers decide to write for children, there is a concurrent responsibility in my opinion. Having the above goals helped me see that this author is prepared to meet that! Finding an online presence and giving children a chance to meet her characters also speaks to an authors credibility. I read the second book in what will be a series. The first being a Mission to Pluto.

Now the choice to take children into outer space was something I would not have expected. However, it certainly provided the author the opportunity to move into many different scientific areas, teaching, for instance, about meteorites in this second book...

"Approaching Chelyabinsk, Russia," announced Freeda, "Meteorite 2013."

"Great!" applauds Marky. "We can tell Astrid Asteroid that 

we have found her lost piece."

"Holymackarolee! Why is there so much broken glass?" 

questions Lukas.

"The meteorite created a SONIC BOOM when it entered 

the Earth's atmosphere, which shattered the glass on the 

buildings," replies Dr. Dee Dee...

There's magic, there's space travel, medical miracles to perform and most of all, you can see the caring and concern that is sooooo plentiful that it is used for not only people patients but for just 

about anything that needs to be "fixed up"! In fact, I love the way the book ends!

The narrative includes not only the storyline but once in a while presents a poem or two. Each of the 42 pages is beautifully done, and measures about 8 x 10. Even the inside hard covers have been filled! A Glossary and a set of Discovery Questions adds to the extensive attempt to provide both an enjoyable time as well as a tool to help with reading comprehension.

Dr Oneeka Williams developed her desire to become a doctor at an early age. When she first entered the operating room while attending Harvard Medical School, it was love at first sight. Dr Dee Dee Dynamo encourages kids to live a life without limits. This is Dr Williams’ first children's book.
