Dr. Dee Dynamo's Back at BRH in Latest Children's Learning Adventure by Oneeka Williams, M.D,

I was so pleased to be contacted regarding the latest book featuring Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo! As I snoop around the Internet, I found this pic of the author and immediately realized that this was the real Dee Dee Dynamo, don't you think?! She is a role model for both young children and adults females as she shares the attitude of "I can do it!" In fact, I enjoyed listening to the following when her first book in the series came out. Her desire to support women in the sciences is very important for children as they dream of what they want to be when they get big! This is the time to plant the seeds since we don't know the fear of failure as children! That is the time for sharing that each child can be whatever they want to be when they are old enough...

If you haven't already read the second book in the series, do check out my review. Her latest continues the adventures of a doctor who fixes just about anything she's ask to fix and her abilities have taken her out of this world to other planets! Cool, right? Children not only have a wonderful time working along side Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo, but also learn much about astronomy. In fact you and your children may be learning together, just as I did reading these fantastic books!

Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo's
  Saturn Surprise

By Oneeka Williams M.D.
Illustrated by Valerie Bouthyette

The Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo children's series, as well as her other work, has won the author, Dr. Oneeka Williams, the 2014 Science Club for Girls Catalyst Award. If you know nothing else about her, just reading her children's book series will give you an understanding for the award. When I read my first book, I was surprised that we were heading into outer space! But what better place can a doctor use all of her scientific experience where there is nobody else to help!

Everything that Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo works with is magical and helps her do her work--even the medical instruments, like scissors. For instance, Simon Scissors--See him and the others in this pic--is his name! Do you name the various items you use daily? Well, when they are called for an emergency, each one has to know exactly what to do, so Simon Scissors, for instance, knows to immediately run and jump into Marky Medicine Bag, along with all the others so that Dr. Dee Dee is ready to quickly respond...
Now check out her wrist! That's Wyndee Watch and that is how Dr. Dee Dee gets all her messages and requests for help!
She speaks into Wyndee,
"Freeda and Kyle, please
prepare the team and
pick up up at the
Planetarium."
~~~
Buzz! Buzzzzzz! Her wrist vibrates and she looks down at Wyndee Watch. Wyndee's screen illuminates and Gordon the Gullible Clobe appears, spinning and flashing his blue lights. Dr. Dee Dee turns up Wyndee's volume.
WAHOO! WAHOO! WAHOO!
Gordon's alarm pierces the air, startling the other Planetarium goers.
"What is it, Gordon?" Dr. Dee Dee whispers.
"I heard sounds of pandemonium coming from Saturn--and when I looked out I saw that his rings were gone! Something is terribly wrong," says Gordon.
"Are you sure, Gordon? asks Dr. Dee Dee. "There are times when we cannot see Saturn's rings from Earth, you know. When this happens, it is called "ring plane crossing,' But the rings are still there."
"I'm sure, Dr. Dee Dee. We have to go!" Gordon insists.
"Sounds like we have a new mission," says Dr. Dee Dee thoughtfully. She pushes the alert button on Wyndee. It sends a shockwave signal to her team that it is time for another adventure.
~~~

"oh dear," says Freeda sheepishly. "I am so sorry. I mistakenly
entered the letters SAUURN instead of SATURN and the
GPS rearranged it as uranus."
"Don't worry, Freeda, we all make mistakes," says Dr. Dee
Dee reassuringly.
~~~
Lukas, who had been visiting the planetarium with Dr. Dee Dee, was curious and started asking questions immediately. He wanted to know why Saturn would lose its rings. So, like the helper that she is, Dr. Dee Dee takes the time to share with Lukas and readers all about what she knows about Saturn.
But then she admits that she has no idea why there would be a commotion coming from Saturn, noting that something else must be going on...
Whiles she's sharing with Lukas, Freeda, who is the Flying Ambulance that takes the team to the emergency, is gathering everybody together, picks them up, and then sets the GPS for Saturn...at least she thought she did, but they all wound up at Uranus! Do you know where that is?
Note that Uranus is right next to Saturn...then look up to see the relationship to Earth...
Now some may have already heard of the Cassini mission. But Lukas and Kyle were surprised when the first thing they were asked, by the Saturn planet, was if they were with the Mission? Everybody could tell that Saturn was tired and frustrated and admitted that since they had come in 1997, he and his rings had no privacy and now none of his secrets were secrets anymore!
Well, Dr. Dee Dee quickly introduced herself and explained why they had come. Fortunately Saturn had heard from Pluto what she had done for him so he immediately started to tell her... Instead of circling the planet like a circle, some were slanted, circling on their own without coordinating with the others! Saturn begged for help!
"My rings have gone stark raving mad. They don't want to be rings anymore."
"All of them?" asks Dr. Dee Dee.
"All of them!" complains Saturn. "A, B, C, D, E, F and G!"
"Poor Saturn," says Marky Medicine Bag. "This looks like a disaster. What are we going to do, Dr. Dee Dee?
~~~

Would you believe by the time that Dr. Dee Dee finished her review of the situation, she created the "Do The Saturn Dance" for everybody to dance and get the rings right back where they were supposed to be! You'll have to work hard to learn how to do it...it includes some crazy moves like the Electric Slide, the Moon Ring and more! Better get your dance shoes out so you can help Dr. Dee Dee and the rest of her team as they all work together to fix Saturn's Rings!

There is one character that deserves a special mention...His name is Kyle and he's someone who seems to always be negative about trying things...If you know somebody like that, you'll be able to see how Dr. Dee Dee loving scolds him at the same time he's an important member of the team...There are many small samples of this type of interpersonal relationship learning that is being taught while children
enjoy all that is happening.

This series continues to be both high quality in the book format, the fantastic art work within, as well as one of the best children's books I've reviewed in relation to the high level of educational value provided. The creativity and imagination in turning medical instruments, such as when getting shots, into Sydnee Syringe, who can become a friend to everybody, certainly nonverbally helps children learn that the doctor is someone who is there to help in whatever way possible. I'm so happy Dr. Dee Dee invited me on her latest adventure! Saturn has a lot to learn about, so make sure your children and friends get the chance to meet her too!

Now is a good chance to add book characters that your child may not have previously had the opportunity to meet through their favorite books! This book and the series is an excellent learning experience in many very
important ways... Highly recommended!

About the Author

What do you get when you combine a science teacher with a journalist? A surgeon who writes poetry and children’s books!

My childhood was filled with the joys of discovery and exploration as my science teacher Mom took every opportunity to expose us to the wonders of science. On the other hand my Dad shared his passion for writing and I grew up writing poetry for every occasion including birthdays, holidays and family reunions. I still have fond memories of an essay competition that my twin brother and I entered on ‘Windows to the Sea’ which was designed to highlight the overdevelopment of the Barbados beachfront. We each wrote our essays independently but when our teacher looked at them, they complemented each other so well that we combined them into one essay and won the competition.

Growing up in the tropics was an incredible experience. I appreciate it now even more, as my husband and I raise our son in the cold New England winters. Every year we ask ourselves the same question, why are we still here? My Dad dug a fishpond for us in the backyard of our home in Guyana and we fished almost every weekend. Ever so often we would catch an eel that had snuck into the pond from the neighboring alley to feast on our fish and this was always accompanied by much excitement. There was always adventure and exploration.

I love science and always knew I wanted to be a doctor. I even performed minor surgery as early as age 12 when one of my classmates ripped her earring out of her ear lobe and I came to the rescue.

My journey took me first to Johns Hopkins University, ‘the pre-med capitol’. I then went to Harvard Medical School, followed by Massachusetts General Hospital and Lahey Clinic for surgical training. All along the way my creative outlet continued to be writing and interior design. I love painting, remodeling, renovating, upholstering furniture and landscaping.

I have always participated in various community volunteer programs with young people. One weekend, as I was cutting into cow hearts at a girl’s science club activity and finding engaging ways to present the physiology, it occurred to me that I wanted to write books that would share my love for science and medicine. I was inspired by my Mom who has written several science texts.

Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo is truly the embodiment of everything I hold dear. She is caring, dynamic, energetic, positive, powerful, spunky and believes that she can do anything. She heals with her hands, brings surgery and science together and loves her family.

Latest Recommendation For Your Children's Home Library - Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo's Meteorite Mission by Oneeka Williams M.D.!

Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo lives in Battery Grove with her parents and grandparents, Mommy and Daddy Dynamo knew from an early
age that Dr. Dee Dee had special abilities. Her hands glowed when she was born! And when Dr. Dee Dee was only three months old, Mommy Dynamo found her at the top of their mango tree, repairing a baby bird's wing...
~

"What is it, Gordon?" Dr. Dee Dee asks.
"Astrid Asteroid is wailing because a part of her has broken off and she doesn't know where it went," says Gordon. "Then I heard a loud BOOM that came from Earth's Northern Hemisphere."
~
"I am so confused," says Luka. "Asteroids, meteoroids, meteors, meteorites, comets! How can you possibly tell the difference?"

~~~
Our Mission
To Educate, Empower, Enrich and create a framework for children to believe that “Not Even the Sky is the Limit!”
Goals
  1. To share the excitement and love that I have for being a doctor and a surgeon with young readers.
  2. To create an action figure that brings strong, positive and powerful images for girls of all colors.
  3. To introduce in Children’s Literature, a counter narrative to some of the stereotypical images in the media.
  4. To stimulate interest in the sciences for all kids, but especially girls, by presenting learning facts in a fun way.
  5. To promote the importance of literacy.
Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo's
  Meteorite Mission
By Oneeka Williams M.D.
Illustrated by Valerie Bouthyette
Let's get the team ready,"
Dr. Dee Dee says
urgently. "We must help"
~~~

Check out the cover of a children's book and you can pretty well tell if it's one to acquire for your permanent children's library! This one definitely is! Other than the picture of Dr. Dee Dee, I found the most compelling were the inclusion of various medical instruments and each had a name! How wonderful an idea that can be effectively used to help children understand about going to see a doctor and what instruments he or she might use... especially "Sydnee Syringe"! Nobody likes getting shots, no matter how old we are! And having that stethoscope being placed on our chest for the first time, just might be what leads some children to play doctor and even dream of becoming one!

Freeda the Flying Ambulance is ready and
waiting. "Are all the instruments ready?"
Dr. Dee Dee asks Marky Medicine Bag.
"They are clean, sharp, and ready for
action, Dr. Dee Dee!" says Marky with
gusto.
"Team, fasten your seatbelts. Freeda, set
GPS for the meteorite collision site in
Earth's Northern Hemisphere," directs
Dr. Dee Dee.
~~~
So after I'd been introduced to "Marky Medicine Bag", "Ana Anesthetic" and even "Simon Scissors", I was interested enough to start looking around on the Internet... I just had to include Dr. Williams' Mission statement. When writers decide to write for children, there is a concurrent responsibility in my opinion. Having the above goals helped me see that this author is prepared to meet that! Finding an online presence and giving children a chance to meet her characters also speaks to an authors credibility. I read the second book in what will be a series. The first being a Mission to Pluto.
Gordon the Gullible Globe
chimes in. "I heard Pluto
telling his moon, Charon,
that he was very happy when
Dr. Dee Dee operated on him.
He said all he felt was a little
pinch."
                        ~~~

Now the choice to take children into outer space was something I would not have expected. However, it certainly provided the author the opportunity to move into many different scientific areas, teaching, for instance, about meteorites in this second book...

"Approaching Chelyabinsk, Russia," announced Freeda, "Meteorite 2013."

"Great!" applauds Marky. "We can tell Astrid Asteroid that
we have found her lost piece."
"Holymackarolee! Why is there so much broken glass?"
questions Lukas.
"The meteorite created a SONIC BOOM when it entered
the Earth's atmosphere, which shattered the glass on the
buildings," replies Dr. Dee Dee...

~~~
In addition to personifying her instruments, Dr. Dee Dee
also helps the animals as well as the people and then proceeds
to help the meteorite!
"I'm Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo,
Super Surgeon ON THE GO!
My hands were made to heal.
I cut, I sew, I tie with zeal;
No problem is too big or small
Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo can tackle them all!
There's magic, there's space travel, medical miracles to perform and most of all, you can see the caring and concern that is sooooo plentiful that it is used for not only people patients but for just
about anything that needs to be "fixed up"! In fact, I love the way the book ends!
The narrative includes not only the storyline but once in a while presents a poem or two. Each of the 42 pages is beautifully done, and measures about 8 x 10. Even the inside hard covers have been filled! A Glossary and a set of Discovery Questions adds to the extensive attempt to provide both an enjoyable time as well as a tool to help with reading comprehension.
Get the idea I was impressed! Parents, Teachers, Librarians, Don't miss this one...and if you haven't started your permanent child's library at home, Start With This One!
Darryl Billups Mystery, Written by Former Journalist, Begins New Series!
Close up of the NAACP Library DisplayImage by Kraemer Family Library via Flickr
"The dumbstruck faces of the black men and
women trapped in the disintegrating NAACP
building were what Mark Dillard recalled
most vividly about the dream..."
Last night marked the third time in a week
the dream had rattled around inside Dillard's
head...Dillard struck a match and sat motionless,
mesmerized by the quivering flame...It amazed
Dillard that something so small and seemingly
benign could unleash such incredible
destructive power."
Up Jumped The Devil
A Darryl Billups Mystery
By Blair S. Walker
After enjoying recent novels by Journalists Charles Salzberg, Bruce DeSilva, and Harold Michael Harvey, I was enthused to find Blair S. Walker and his mystery series. Walker has been with USA Today, New York Newsday, the Washington Post and with the Associate Press. This is the first of the three already available novels, featuring investigative reporter Darryl Billups. A great beginning!
Hate crimes are often conceived by a few individuals who have either been indoctrinated from early life or have been hurt by the "system" in some way. Dillard had been taught by his grandmother who, perhaps unknowingly, taught him to hate anybody that was different from him. Loving his grandmother, he had learned to hate everybody that she spoke against. Now his hate was his only driving force...
He had been able to capture the attention of a few individuals that had similar feelings--one had been recently overlooked for a promotion that had been made based upon affirmative action rather than seniority. Another was a demolitions expert, taught while in the armed forces. The other, Rick Allen,  was, or seemed to be, merely a groupie, a fan of Dillard...but he was an undercover cop...
Dillard had borrowed Allen's truck and had been carrying neo-Nazi propaganda, blasting caps and dynamite when he ran out of gas and got involved with the police. Soon he was in a shootout and had wounded a Baltimore cop, while getting away. He immediately called Allen to let him know that his truck was being held by the police and during the confusion that occurred afterward, Dillard discovered that Allen was a cop! He was the group's first victim...and then there were three...
There were several actions they had planned: demolishing the NAACP Headquarters, killing a local Jewish philanthropist who was known to contribute large sums of money to minority groups. Now, however, using the personal loss to Harold Boyles' when he didn't get his expected promotion, Dillard got the group psyched to take revenge by bombing one or more of the company's new garbage trucks. Unfortunately, Boyles' best friend was killed in the blast; Boyles was so upset at what he'd done that he committed suicide. And then there were two...
In the meantime, Darryl Billups is dealing with daily issues for the Baltimore crime beat, while trying to stay out of the politics of working for a predominantly white-owned/managed newspaper, and especially with his immediate supervisor, who is constantly trying to put Darryl in a bad light. When Darryl begins getting calls from an autonomous informer, telling about the planned NAACP bombing and the murder of the community leader, he immediately places calls to a homicide police officer with whom he's earlier worked, and to his newspaper. The woman with whom he spoke, however, lied about receiving the information! His supervisor began his campaign to get him off the crime beat, but, instead, Billups continues to receive the calls. The Managing Editor keeps Billups working on the case...
"Obviously this is not going to be one of my memorable days.
It doesn't get any better a few minutes later when some
crackpot calls up with a cryptic warning about a conspiracy..."
"I'm sitting...wondering why a purported terrorist has singled
me out. Is it just some twisted cretin messing with one of the
paper's few black reporters?
"But what am I supposed to make of a caller warning that a tan
Dodge van will blow up the NAACP's national headquarters
in downtown Baltimore?
"Weirdos selcom deal in that kind of detail. Naturally, when
I pressed for more information, I got a click in my ear for my
trouble."
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rob_cornelius/16926104/sizes/m/in/photostream/
I missed an important clue along the way, so I was completely surprised at the end regarding the anonymous caller. But that's alright, because I enjoyed trying to guess who was doing what along the way. The climatic ending was thoroughly satisfying, especially afterwards when Darryl began to receive job offers and quit his job... having to encounter any form of discrimination on the job is just not worth staying, in my opinion!
If you enjoy a good action mystery and would like to see behind the scenes regarding crime reporting and the interaction between the police and the newspaper--what gets reported and what doesn't, sometimes...then I believe you, too, will enjoy Up Jumped The Devil!
Perhaps, one day, there will be no hate crimes to be reported in our daily news. Learning more about the participants may be a way to discover and prevent such crimes. I commend authors who create fictional stories based upon what is happening daily in our lives. This one does just that! Highly recommended...
Review: M. G. Hardie's Book Dialogues About Major Issues in America!
Vector image of two human figures with hands i...
"Ebony and Ivory, living in perfect harmony..."
Image via Wikipedia
It Ain't Just The Size
By M. G. Hardie
When a young man in today's world has something he needs to say to America, a memoir won't do, and a novel will detract and limit. M. G. Hardie chose the screenplay format for his new book, It Ain't Just The Size. It is broken up into days, so I tended to read it more like a journal, a diary sharing what had happened during the lives of the characters. Frankly, I was laughing, crying, getting angry, and thoroughly enjoying it!
It Ain't Just The SizeWe all do it--when we get together with family--but mostly friends, we share about anything and everything that's going on that affects "our" world. Lance, the main character, is an ex-con who is now attending classes. He is divorced and has a daughter that he loves very much, but due to problems with his ex-wife, he doesn't have the opportunity to see her as he would like. For a period of time, he was into a lot more, but has been affected by what has happened to him in the past.  He is a very intelligent man who is trying to put his life together and, in doing that, perhaps help others.
As we begin to watch Lance's life, he is breaking off a relationship with two women, the latter are in a gay relationship but they's been including Lance in their exploits. There are four guys he hangs with. Cazz shares an apartment with Lance, so Billy, Eric and Bori roam in and out of that location on a daily basis. There's a lot of talking and kidding about sex, but there are also many serious discussions about the relationship of sex to being in love. These conversations take a decided turn, naturally, when Cess comes back into Lance's life and decides to hang with the guys.
Cess is my kind of female lead--she's able to stand on her own, intelligent and not afraid to display it with the guys and savvy enough to enter into discussions in open, honest dialogue. Even if she does inhibit some of the discussions--and the guys point that out for her to know!
Besides, she has a thing for Lance...
One of the major discussion issues is race; it is written from the point of view of African-Americans. There wasn't anything that I haven't talked about myself, in reverse, although never so vehemently, except...
I was hearing the other side of a discussion. It was real, honest--from the characters standpoint--and perfectly identified the major issues "still" a problem in America and around the world. I thought about the author's book the other evening as Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder sang at the White House, "Ebony and Ivory...living together in perfect harmony..." Will we ever reach that point? I don't know, but reading M. G.'s book is eye-opening, for members of all races...all you have to do is be willing to listen without becoming defensive of your own opinions...
There is also much said about relationships--between men and women. I was grateful to have Cess participate. She spoke for the women, but with 5 to 1, she sometimes had a hard time. Let's face it, there are always going to be communication problems between men and women; however, reading the various opinions coming from 5 men does give readers much to consider about what they think!
My favorite minor character is Bori. I won't tell you why, you'll see! However, he is the main character in the discussion on immigration. In that conversation, he suggests one of the many ideas that are given throughout the book on various topics, ideas that could be considered to improve things in America. For instance, instead of sending illegal immigrants back into horrendous conditions, why not have them serve in the military for a minimum period while they completed all that is necessary to become legal...Interesting concept? I thought so... Bori was also involved one of the times when I got angry because he was jailed just for trying to see his daughter.
The other was when I learned that Lance would never be able to vote because he had been in jail. Now, I'm not saying that everyone in jail should be permitted to vote...but, get real, surely there is such a thing as being rehabilitated and when an ex-con is out, there should be some process for at least voting privileges to be reconsidered...
It was fascinating to watch the relationship between Lance and Cess develop as they argue and discuss issues. It is also exciting to see the evolution of the discussions from the other 4 men as Lance begins to speak and live as he feels he must! M. G. has in both the front and back of his book, written tributes to his grandfather--M. G., let me say that I think your grandfather would be very proud of you and this Lance you have become (the latter purely an assumption on my part!) Or, in other words, proud of your book.
I recently read a novel, by another young man who was writing with an underlying theme to help his friends, and America. Both that man and M. G. have used writing to speak out and share their thoughts and concerns about what they see. I don't profess to have understood every word in M. G.'s book, especially names and about music and clubs; but I saw and understood the concern, empathy, and love this new author is trying to share to improve the world.
In my opinion, It Ain't Just the Size. by M. G. Hardie is an excellent dialogue of today's real and very troublesome issues. If we all can read it, parents, adults, and young adults, with open hearts and minds, I believe you, too, will consider it a must-read! Indeed, you'll find, like I did, that issues addressed in the book come to mind to ponder over and over. By the way, M. G. has a blog that follows and expands on a lot of the material in his book...Consider following it as well as reading the book! A link is provided by clicking the title of this review.
