I Do Solemnly Swear
By D. M. Annechino
I've read both of Annechino's previous novels, They Never Die Quietly, and Resuscitation and would continue to recommend them both! But this one caught my attention because of the theme and my wanting to see how the author created the character for the first female President of the United States...
Let me just say, I would vote for Katherine Ann Miles!
Now I must stop here because I did something I don't normally do, I skimmed a couple of reviews on this book and I got upset. I try to take each book individually and evaluate it as objectively as possible for how and what is being written. I was somewhat surprised that the terrorist group in the novel were involved with white supremacy. Surely not...still... we continue to hear about them from time to time... so I did just a quick search and was able to quickly find recent news articles...
Apparently others thought it was cliche to spotlight this group of terrorists... Why? Don't you get tired of hearing about the Al Queda? Or should authors continue to write only about these terrorists until they, too, become cliche?
This is all fiction; we buy it to see good over evil (mostly) so why hone in on the particular "bad guys" as poor character development, or for whatever reason comes to mind? Anyway, I digress... But, then, it's my blog...LOL Now, back to my review...
We all know that any woman who reaches the presidency is going to have a tough time. You know it and I know it. So Annechino had to create a character and a situation, in my opinion, that put her to the test. That happened later in the novel, so I'll come back to that...
Katherine Ann Miles was voted in as vice-president. She had talked with the presidential candidate and they both agreed that she would be a much more active vice-president than others. But that had not really happened. And then the President died...
But his wife was suspicious and shared a little with Katherine, but nothing that could be acted upon. Then tox screening proved that he had been poisoned!
First, however, Katherine had to be formally sworn in and she did the first gutsy thing she could have done. She picked her worst enemy to be vice-president! (No way would I have done that!) She also didn't replace anybody, although she had the right to do so.
She also didn't redecorate! Ok, I put that in for myself--it proved she had the good of the government as her main interest, as least in my opinion.
It wasn't until a crisis developed that she won over those who had been willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. She explored all options, demanded the least damage defined that could be done, and bombed strategic locations... While that was going on, however, the real terrorists, operating in the White House itself had already had the president eliminated and were now planning her assassination!
Only one issue highlighted early gave me the whodunit clue, so I wasn't surprised at the ending. That could have been prevented by the author but then, maybe you won't catch it! LOL Annechino had me completely fooled about one of my suspects and provided a nice twist in both the way the President handled things as well as how that character played out his role...
There might have been some rough spots, but given the overall storyline and the trails that were being laid for us who were working to solve the mystery, I found myself thoroughly enjoying this latest novel by D. M. Annechino. He took on a challenge that I've seen written by other authors and successfully, in my opinion, illustrated that his female President was worthy of the office... Do you agree with me? Highly recommended for those who enjoy alternative history in action... Maybe a woman will make it some day...even though I don't think I'll see it in my lifetime. Kudos to Annechico for his Madam President Katherine Ann Miles...

It wasn’t until I hit my 40’s that I discovered my God-given talent for the written word. The paradox here is that I barely made it through high school and scored particularly poorly in English. I hated to read. And through four miserable years of high school, I never once read a book cover to cover. I, of course, read enough to eek out a D+ grade on my book reports. But reading bored me to tears, so I wanted no part of it.
I didn’t belong to any fraternities in high school. Never made the football, baseball, swim or track team. I wasn’t a member of the chess club or choir or yearbook committee. Overall, I was merely an unpopular, skinny teenager from a broken home, who had no idea what the future would hold. The only thing I knew for certain was that I wanted out of high school and wanted a weekly paycheck.
Looking back at those early years and my dark demeanor, remembering how I struggled with English and grammar and conjugating verbs, it seems so surreal that I am a published author and published novelist. Our journey through life can often guide us to crossroads of opportunities that offer unforeseen bounties. Read more on his blog...
