Weaving through the party guests, Estelle Bartoli checked the time on her brass pocket watch dangling from a gold chain around her neck. For twenty years, she’d served as the head housekeeper for the Whitaker family. Naturally, Estelle was no stranger to elegant events at Wind Song Mansion, where six generations of Whitakers had lived and made their fortune in river transportation. Currently, Gavin Whitaker was at the helm of the Whitaker Barge Company. He reined over fifteen fleets of towboats and barges, dry dock cleaning, and dry dock stacking. Four years ago, Pittsburgh’s most eligible and wealthiest bachelor married Miriam Williams. The Williams family owned two massive marine ways, cranes, and equipment to execute underwater and topside marine repairs. Needless to say, Gavin’s mother was relieved and overjoyed with the union. At the time, her only child and heir to the Whitaker fortune was closing in on forty. 
This evening, Gavin was throwing a thirtieth birthday party for his beautiful wife. Fortunes combined, Gavin and Miriam Whitaker were one of Pittsburgh’s most elite socialites, and everyone who was anyone in the Iron City was in attendance this night. Estelle nodded respectfully at the mayor as she passed. Glancing across the vast room, she spotted Miriam’s parents showing off their nine-month-old granddaughter, Sarah, to the city council president and his wife. Good. Riona Connery, the baby’s nanny, was getting a much-needed break. Lord knows the poor girl was trapped in the nursery with barely any time to herself. At seventeen years old, Riona was loving, attentive, and patient with the child. Estelle had her doubts when Miriam hired the girl, yet over the past six months, Riona proved herself competent and unfailing. Sarah was a happy baby, always smiling, as she was for the councilman. A peel of laughter from the far corner of the room caught Estelle’s attention. It appeared several wives of council members had a little too much wine. Gathered in a tight circle, they were giggling like naughty schoolgirls. Disgraceful. Regardless, the party was going perfectly. The wait staff Estelle had prudently hired to cover the event was performing eloquently. Each guest had a drink in hand. The appetizers Angus had created were delicious, and soon the champagne would be flowing, and the cake would be served. That is, when Gavin decided to set the cigars and the cues aside to emerge, with his friends and business associates, from the billiards room. Searching the crowd, Estelle set eyes on Miriam, looking lovely, as usual, and chatting with guests. 
Just then, someone sneezed, and another sneeze, and then a rapid succession of sneezing, followed by wheezing. “Are you alright?” Estelle heard someone inquire, and then she saw Miriam excuse herself from her conversation to wind through the throng of guests toward the wife of the conductor for the Pittsburgh Symphony. Lotte was easing down on the pink and gold striped French sofa. She was having some kind of attack. Miriam sat down next to the woman, gently cupping her shoulder. “What’s going on, Lotte?” The woman pressed a handkerchief to her nose. “Spring allergies, I’m afraid. It seems something in this room is really getting to me.” She nodded toward a large vase filled with roses. “The roses, perhaps?” Somewhere in the house, there was a loud pop! Miriam flinched. Lotte’s eyes widened, and all the guests glanced about the room. Within a moment, everyone returned to their conversations, and another round of sneezing took hold of Lotte and Miriam’s focus. Immediately, Estelle gestured to a waiter. “Get rid of those roses,” she instructed, in a heavy Italian lilt. Setting his tray on a nearby table, the young waiter obliged. Yet, the wheezing intensified. Estelle’s suspicions were mounting that Lotte’s ailment was caused by something else in the house, and she had a feeling she knew what it was. “Are you allergic to cats?” she inquired. Another sneeze. “Oh, yes, they are the worst. I can’t breathe if there’s a cat about,” Lotte croaked. “Oh, dear, we have a cat, a Himalayan, but she spends most of her time upstairs in the nursery with Riona and the baby. Zsa Zsa loves our Sarah, and she’s quite fond of the nanny, too,” Miriam explained. A young woman approached to hand Lotte a glass. “Here, drink this. It’s tonic water.” Smiling and nodding a thank you, Lotte took the glass and sipped. “I saw a young girl walking in the gardens earlier. A cat was following her. It was so beautiful. A Himalayan, you say?” the woman inquired. “Yes, that’s our Zsa Zsa. She’s very beautiful, and I’m certain she was following our nanny, Riona. The cat follows her everywhere. They were probably out for a bit of fresh air,” Miriam expounded. 
“That cat shouldn’t be around the baby,” Estelle put in sternly. “Cats have been known to steal an infant’s breath and cause crib death.” Miriam waved a dismissive hand. “That’s just an old wives’ tale, Estelle.” “Nonetheless, my dear, if there’s a cat in the house, I must be going. Can you find my husband and have our car brought round, please?” Lotte requested in a hoarse voice. Miriam patted Lotte’s knee. “Certainly.” She lifted her gaze to meet Estelle’s. Now it was Miriam’s tone that was stern. “Notify the maid that we need the maestro’s car brought round right now. And have one of the waiters go into the billiards room to get him straightaway.” “Yes, ma’am,” Estelle said, and with that, she made her way across the room, stopping to send a waiter to the billiards room. Almost to the foyer, she felt a tap on her shoulder and turned to find a waiter with his silver serving tray folded against his chest. The tall, skinny, redheaded boy with acne covering his youthful face shifted from one foot to the other, as if he had something to say but didn’t know how to breach the subject. “Si?” “Um…Mrs. Bartoli, we’re out of…um, chardonnay. Where would I get more?” Cocking an eyebrow, Estelle clasped the gold chain around her neck and squeezed. “There’s none on the buffet in the dining room where all the wines are set up?” The boy fidgeted. He dropped his gaze to the floor. “No, ma’am.” Estelle tossed her hands in the air. “Che dolore!” Around an annoyed sigh, she added, “Angus must not have brought enough up from the cellar. Come. We’ll have him fetch more. You’ll need to go with him to help carry the wine up from the basement.” “Yes, ma’am,” the young man stammered. Estelle and the waiter weaved through the guests, until they stepped into the immense foyer where the young house maid stood at a narrow podium stationed beside the tall, double mahogany doors. The setting sun’s rays glimmered through the beveled glass, casting colorful prisms over the parquet floor. “Tessa, have a valet bring the maestro’s car round, immediatamente,” Estelle instructed, and then through the door’s side windows, her gaze caught sight of a blue convertible accelerating away from the house. Her brows furrowed. “A guest has gone already?” “Yes. Mr. Williams requested his car just a few moments ago.” She reached for the telephone affixed to the wall next to the door. “Mrs. Whitaker’s brother? Why?” Estelle asked. Her Italian tone was on the edgy side of insulted. “One of the boys got hurt, and they’re taking him to the hospital,” the girl replied. Rolling her eyes, Estelle flicked the very tips of her fingers under her chin. “Non mi interessa. Those boys are nothing but trouble.” She swung around, almost bumping into the jumpy waiter. How did this one get through my interview? With a wiggle of her forefinger, the waiter was on her heels as she proceeded through the wide corridor to the kitchen, where they found the cook, Angus Docherty. The large man stood at a long butcher-block table assembling delicate pastries onto trays. Angus’s white, double-breasted jacket barely fit. The buttons looked as if they would pop at any moment, and his belly flopped over his stained apron. Sweat beaded his brow and dribbled down his temples. His sausage-like fingers carefully cradled each pastry as he eased them onto the tray. Pausing from his chore, he picked up a champagne flute and took a greedy gulp. Estelle’s eyes popped. “Angus, did you open the champagne already?” It wasn’t a question. It was a reprimand...

...“Who’s there?” a woman inquired from inside the apartment. “Detective Slater and Constable Mulligan,” Slater replied. The lock clicked and when the door opened, Nora stood before them with an expectant look in her eyes. “I was wonderin’ when you’d come back. What’ve ya got, then?” “May we come in?” Slater asked. Nora stepped aside to give them entry. Slater removed his fedora. Winnie followed him into the apartment. Bonnie Connery stood in the humble kitchen area, pouring hot water into two teacups. Oh, yes, Winnie remembered the woman well. When Bonnie first arrived at The Lazy Hound Pub with her family, she was a lovely, vibrant Irish woman. Full auburn tresses spilled about her shoulders, and her green eyes were always smiling, even if she wasn’t. Now, Bonnie was overtly thin. The green and white polka-dotted dress she was sporting hung loose on her boney frame, and when she turned to see who had come into her quarters, her eyes were not smiling, nor was she. Despair had drawn Bonnie’s pretty features downward. Still, the resemblance to her sister, Nora, was most apparent. Except for their eyes. Nora’s eyes were more resolute, probing. “Nora and I were about to have some tea. Can I get you some?” Like Nora, Bonnie’s Irish lilt was very heavy. “No, thank you.” Slater turned to Winnie. “Constable?” Winnie shook her head no. 

“I assume you’re Bonnie Connery.” “That I am, Detective.” Bonnie carried the cups and saucers to a tiny table, set them down, and gestured for her sister to sit. Nora obliged. “I’m sorry. I only have three chairs. Constable, would you like to sit?” Slater nodded to Winnie, and she took the third chair. He moved toward the kitchen while pulling out his pad and pen from his jacket. Setting his fedora on the counter, he leaned a hip against it. “I hope you enjoyed your shopping trip.” “We haven’t just been shoppin’, Detective. We hired a solicitor to arrange for Riona’s body to be exhumed and taken to the coroner,” Nora said. Bonnie’s gaunt face pinched in anguish as she sipped her tea. Slater exchanged glances with Winnie. “I see. Mrs. Connery, I wanted to ask you some questions about your daughter.” Closing her eyes, Bonnie nodded. “How long did Riona work at Wind Song Mansion?” Bonnie stared into her teacup. “Six months.” “Did she like working for the Whitakers?” She lifted a shoulder and let it drop. “I suppose.” The corners of Bonnie’s lips arched ever so slightly. “She adored that wee one, but it was hard for such a young lass to provide constant care like that.” Bonnie dragged her watery gaze to meet Slater’s. “Riona rarely came to visit. The Whitakers didn’t give her much time away. I missed her. I wasn’t allowed to visit. I’m not sure why.” She covered her mouth to stifle a sob. Nora gently laid her hand over Bonnie’s. Slater softened his tone. “I know this is hard. I’m so sorry, Mrs. Connery, but when Riona came to visit, did she seem on edge or uncomfortable about anything going on at the Whitakers’? Did she get along with the staff?” Bonnie shot an uncomfortable look at her sister. Nora nodded for her to expose all. With a shaking hand, Bonnie sat her cup on the saucer and lifted her gaze to meet the detective’s. 

“It was that cook. Angus Docherty, I tell ya. He was always makin’ inappropriate comments to Riona. Tellin’ her how pretty she was, suggestin’ they might go to dinner sometime. He was old enough to be her father, for God’s sake. I told her she could quit. She should come home, we’d make do somehow. She didn’t have to put up with the likes of Angus Docherty. But Riona insisted she could handle him. He was on the suspect list, ya know. Everybody thought he’d done it. That other detective was suspicious of him, I’ll tell ya. But he just…went away. I don’t know what happened to him, if he died or left the department, but I never heard another word about me daughter’s…” Her words gave way to weeping. Bonnie pulled a handkerchief from the pocket of her dress to cover her nose and mouth. 

“Detective Mark Schultz. I don’t know what happened to him, but I didn’t know the man at all. Unfortunately, all his notes disappeared, Mrs. Connery. I’m starting over with this case,” Slater said. “And you’ll get to the bottom of it, I’m tellin’ ya,” Nora said concisely. Bonnie pushed up from her seat. “I best be gettin’ downstairs. The dinner rush will be startin’ and I don’t want Molly or Winnie to have to pick up me tables. They’ve done quite enough of that.” With that, she made her way to the door, grabbed an apron from the coat hooks on the wall, and made her exit. The group remained silent while listening to Bonnie’s quick footfalls on the staircase. “We just interviewed Angus Docherty. He claims he didn’t kill Riona,” Slater said. “I see. So, when someone claims they didn’t do it, we’re supposed to say, oh, fair play, and scratch them off the suspect list, are we?” Nora bit out. “Here’s the facts, Detective: Angus Docherty had plenty of opportunity to kill me niece. Here’s how I see it: Riona came in from her walk through the kitchen because wealthy sods, like the Whitakers, don’t like the help waltzin’ through their fancy affairs. Angus lured her downstairs to show her somethin’, or to give her somethin’, but in fact, he wanted somethin’. When Riona resisted, he killed her, and dressed it all up to look like a suicide.” 

“I like it. I really do, but why would Coroner Lawson cover up a murder for a cook?” Slater threw up his hands. “Okay, maybe he’s a really good cook, but I hardly think a respected coroner is going to jeopardize his reputation for someone the Whitakers could easily replace.” “Maybe the cook had somethin’ on one of the Whitakers or the coroner himself,” Winnie put in. Nora pointed a stiff finger at Winnie. “Now you’re talkin’, Constable.” Slater raised his hands in surrender. “You might be right. That said, I think we need to look deeper than what’s on the surface.” “You’re right. So, have a seat then, Detective Slater,” Nora said. Slater obliged. “I think I’ve got somethin’ to show ya that ya haven’t seen before.” The Irish Constable stood and made her way a short distance to walk around a double bed. She picked up a briefcase, laid it on the bed to open it, and plucked a manilla envelope from inside. Returning to the table, she sat back down and slid the envelope across the table to Slater. “Take a look at those, Detective, and you too, Constable.” Slater dug into the envelope to retrieve photographs, then with furrowed brows, his gaze snapped up to meet Nora’s. “Crime scene photos? Where in God’s name did you get these?” “Look at the return address, why don’t ya.” Slater flipped the envelope over. The photographs had been sent from his precinct. “Who…” “I’ve got me contacts, and I don’t wish to share them at this time. Take a look at the first photo, the shot of Riona sittin’ against the wall. Notice where the gun is lyin’.” Winnie leaned in to see the picture. “It’s next to her right hand.” 

“That’s right. But Riona was helplessly left-handed. If she were inclined to shoot herself, which I don’t believe she was, wouldn’t the lass have used the hand she was certain of?” “I’d say yes, if you’re askin’ me,” Winnie replied. “Evidently, it’s a little detail the killer wasn’t aware of,” Nora said. Slater studied the photos closely. “That’s a Luger that’s been placed next to her hand. Where would a young girl get a Luger? Where would she get a gun in the first place, and why would she have one?” “So, you agree that she didn’t kill herself?” Nora questioned. Slater’s gaze met Nora’s. “Regardless, if she was left-handed or not, the Luger is laying in the wrong position and too close to the body.” He pointed to the photo. “See, it’s right next to her thigh. If she’d shot herself, the gun would have dropped farther away when her hand flung away from the kickback, not right next to her thigh. Yeah, someone laid her hand there and placed the gun to make it look like she’d shot herself.” He glanced over the other photos, and then hesitating on the third photo, he pointed at a spot. “What’s this? A puddle? Blood?” Nora and Winnie looked over his shoulder. “Is it a shadow?” Nora asked. “Don’t know. I haven’t had a chance to look at the original coroner’s report. We picked it up, along with the few notes I had in my desk, on the way to the interviews at Wind Song Mansion.” “I looked it over a bit while we were drivin’ along,” Winnie began. “There was no mention of gun residue at all. Not on the lass’s hand or her head. It basically said the lass died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Not much more information, I’m afraid.” “Well, there ya have it, then. Like I said, a dodgy coroner’s report. Now, what’ve ya got in mind, Detective? Because, this time, I’ll be comin’ along,” Nora stated. Slater stood. “We’re going to see Gavin Whitaker at his office. Let’s go.” Nora and Winnie pushed up from their seats. Quickly, Nora gathered up the teacups and placed them in the sink before checking to make sure the stove was off. She handed Slater his hat and then grabbed her coat and purse from hooks next to the door. Plopping his fedora on his head, Slater held the door open for the ladies, and then the trio stepped into the hallway and headed for the staircase. Slater brought up the rear. Halfway down the stairs, Winnie stopped and turned toward Nora and Slater. “The baby was nine months old when Riona died. Bonnie said Riona was the Whitakers’ nanny for six months. So, who took care of the wee one the first three months? Why did they give up their position, and where are they now?” Slater stopped short. “Good question.” “How did ya know the baby was nine months at the time of Riona’s death?” Nora asked. “Um…I must’ve read it somewhere or someone must’ve mentioned it. I…I’m fairly good at rememberin’ little details. Part of me job, isn’t it, then?” Winnie pointed out. “Perhaps ya might not be too hasty to send this one back to Ireland, Detective Slater,” Nora stated.

McDonald has really upped her game in her latest Owl's Nest Mystery Series... And I LOVED It! First, let's set the stage for the theme of the series... Angel Characters... I was excited to read the first book in this series... But, instead of a straight cozy mystery where readers are working along with the amateur detective in trying to sold a murder mystery, C. S. has added humor... And just like the "Who's on First?" comedy scenario, readers may begin to feel like we're running around trying to follow exactly what is happening... Because we now have two angels to keep track of... And, she ups it further by switching the ghost human partners, by including her dearest work partner to substitute for her! So, while this might be a rather fast-paced story, be prepared to slow it down to keep track of who's on first...


So, are you ready?

Alexa Owl is our main character who owns Owl's Nest Couturier Shoppe. She is normally the one who works with one of the angels--and, did I mention time travel is also involved? You see, the angels are sent back to solve cold cases! Detective Bobby Starr has been in all of the first books while he has been working to gain permanent membership in the Guardian Angel Squad... Alexa is his human contact. As of now, we the readers have not been told how Alexa happened to be that human... (if I remember right, LOL).

“We’re here today to read the last will and testament of one, Jacob Allan Burnley, a fine attorney, sharp businessman, and…um…well, he was a human being.”

This time, however, there is a case in the present. And it involves Alex's sister, Natalyn La Pearle. She has been accused of killing her boss...in her bed...with a knife... Twelve Times... 

Now here's the twist. Alex is involved with Detective Cliff Slater, the primary homicide officer. However, since Alex's sister is the accused and also intimate with Cliff, he has been cut out of the case. And, of course, that means that Alex, who has been used to helping with cases for many years, with Starr, she refuses to be excluded from working this most important case... Obviously Cliff will help... In this book, Detective Starr gets to meet the real Cliff Slater and immediately starts comparing him to his grandfather... The new angel in training...

Detective Errol Jones has been assigned her sister's case and even though Cliff is a good cop, Jones wants to play it straight to exclude Cliff, or Alex... But, since this is Jones' first murder case, Cliff asked for and got the chance to work along with him... Thankfully... Because it was quite clear that Jones believed that Natalyn was guilty... quickly pointing out that even the knife used was from her kitchen!

So let's head back to 1958 where we find Detective Starr with a new partner, not knowing how to deal with her, as well as the family members of the girl that had been killed and found in a wine cellar, and never having her case solved. And a persistent family member who wants to work along on the case as well. So Detective Starr introduces them as Constables who are visiting America from Ireland. And they both proved to be excellent at the details that even Starr had not seen. This cold case was solved!

One of the little plot manipulation that had to occur was that both Alex, when they traveled back in history, and for Winnie this time, was that they were replaced by Heavenly actors in their places. Now, for Alex, that didn't prove to be a problem since Winnie knew all about Detective Starr and what happened in Alex's absence... But now Winnie was being pulled back into the past. Winnie was a wonderfully outspoken individual, friendly and talking with everybody. But, could a fake Winnie fool Louie Santorini when he came calling for an evening out?

Clearly this is a character-driven novel. But the writer helps her reader by providing a list of characters at the beginning of the book, in case you need to refresh just who or what is handling which case... Seriously, it's a fun, perhaps, more complex story than the average cozy mystery, but certainly worthy of providing the warmth and concern that cozy mysteries always seem create... Highly recommended! In fact, I recommend the whole series, so if you haven't read this author yet, why not start with the first in series shown above...

Zerlina Maxwell Presents The End of White Politics: How to Heal Our Liberal Divide - The Author's Note - A Must-Read Book For NOW!

 



So, you may ask...Yes, I'm reading two books at once... Actually, three... I was pretty sure what this book would be talking about... I thank God that I was watching the right news program to hear about the book... This one I'm enjoying reading... All good info...

Whitehouse's book is also great information...But I get too upset with his investigation/reporting on The Supreme Court... So I read a little of this one and then spend more time with Maxwell...

For fun, I'm reading a novel about the first female president!

Back to Maxwell's Hypothetical/Future look for Us. It was written in 2020 and it's a little dated on presidential election information. But we all know that it has only gotten worse in 2024... And we are even more concerned about what the republican party intends to do... So, I thought I'd announce the book, provide the Author's Note from the front of the Book, and let you all know that it is, in my opinion, a must-read book? Why? There may be other women out there writing about these issues, but this is the first one that I've learned of... I've read beyond what I'm sharing today and have to say, I've been shocked about what she's saying about parts of the Democratic leader's followers... Needless to say that it's about a certain group of white men? It doesn't matter what party they decide to choose... More on that later...


Author’s Note 

When I first sat down to write this book, it was clear that our country desperately needed a revamp when it came to political representation—and that the end of white politics was on the horizon. And then, 2020 happened and knocked our fragile democracy right off its axis. After all, I wrote this entire book before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. I wrote it before Joe Biden became the president and Kamala Harris became the vice president. I wrote it before the violent white mob stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. I wrote it before President Donald Trump was impeached for a second time. It’s like I had a crystal ball. 

Americans have long been hindered by both our dark history and the inability of our leadership to confront a racist framework that has consistently prioritized white comfort over Black and Brown life. And yet, if 2020 showed us anything, it’s that the end of white politics is knocking right on our front door. Case in point: the groundbreaking election of Kamala Harris as the first female, first Black, and first South Asian vice president of the United States, which represents both the changing demographics in the United States and the shifting spectrum through which power and politics here are played. 

The electorate of this country, so heavily comprised of women and people of color, yearn to be represented by people who look like them and who share their lived experiences. Harris doesn’t just represent what the end of white politics might look like; she’s ushering the end of white politics right into our living room. And yet, it’s not going to be easy. The tumultuous turmoil and civic unrest of the past year also showed us that seventy-four or so million Americans aren’t quite ready to let go of the power of their whiteness, and what’s more, they are willing to throw out the entire American democratic experiment to hold on to the promise of an America that no longer exists.

As our demographic shifts away from whiteness, our political landscape changes, and these electoral wins for our multiracial democracy provoke pushback and even violence from the fading white majority. Though our country was built on the foundations of freedom and democracy, it’s becoming quite clear that the biggest prize of all for many Americans is, in fact, power. 

After the November election results came in, this lingering legacy of white supremacy affirmed that these seventy-four million people are willing to destroy the entire American democratic establishment in order to prevent a coalition of people of color from becoming a politically powerful majority. Some of those seventy-four million were so afraid that they were willing to band together and launch an insurrection on the Capitol building in January 2021. Every step from the outside of the barricade into the Capitol building—into the House chamber, the Senate chamber, and up to the Senate floor podium—was made possible by white privilege. 

Every step they took without the fear of being shot or killed was undeniably white privilege. And yet, the very idea of the end of white politics is precisely what motivated the attack in the first place. When power slips from its grasp, the dying lion will always lash out. The insurrection of the Capitol was a death rattle to the America we’ve seen for the past four years—the death of America’s former king of the jungle, and the white supremacy that installed him there. 

And yet, despite all of the challenges that have risen up to meet it, positive change marches forward. Since Donald Trump was elected in 2016, we have dramatically expanded the American electorate; as a result, the promised demographic shifts are becoming a reality, illustrated by big electoral wins in the 2020 election. By registering and motivating the electorate to turn out to vote and make their voices heard, Stacey Abrams and other organizers facilitated the Democratic win of the Senate majority and turned Georgia blue for the first time since the Clinton years. This is no small feat. 

We’ve long considered the South full of so-called red states, but now, we’re taking our first steps toward a more diverse and inclusive future, one where all voices are considered and where the votes of communities of color aren’t suppressed. And Georgia won’t be the last red state, county, or district to turn blue. Stacey Abrams and her fellow organizers on the ground created a model for others across the rest of the nation to follow. 

These powerful movements begin by conversing with the people in these communities who are so often ignored by the mainstream and helping them to raise their political voice. Every voice, every vote, counts. What’s more, leaders like Abrams are approachable, accessible, and relatable to average Americans—those who are working for a living, fearing eviction, and suffocating in student loan debt, all experiences that the millionaires in the Senate have no familiarity with and thus can never effectively legislate for. 

Leaders who truly represent the American electorate feel a sense of urgency to alleviate the pressure so many Americans feel—especially in the darkest depths of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic—because they, too, feel these pressures in their own lives and lived experiences. And by electing these leaders to positions of power where they can make a real impact, we inch closer to our Founding Fathers’ goal of “freedom and justice for all.” 

A week before Kamala Harris became our MVP, or Madam Vice President, my brilliant Sirius XM cohost Jess McIntosh said: “We have elected younger, more diverse, more progressive representatives since Donald Trump was elected...[including the addition of] Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock to the Senate in Georgia. This is us building a democracy.” And she’s right. We don’t get here by accident; we get here by action. To maintain this representative electorate, as well as the momentum of recent Democratic wins in states like Georgia, we have to focus on what worked and who made it work.

Ultimately, the on-the-ground organizers and leaders in these communities are the ones who truly understand the electorate they are serving and are the most fit to lead them. And by electing them, empowering them, and holding them accountable—that’s how we preserve the integrity of the more representative electorate in future generations. That’s how we promote real progress and change. And as we support the newly-created infrastructure that has elevated these leaders to positions of power, they can then, in turn, break through the barriers and open the door for even more members of a diverse electorate to join them in the chambers where policies are being made. If we want to keep moving forward, we can’t stop until our legislative is truly representative of the increasingly diverse population they serve. 

When we talk about the future of American politics—that is, the end of white politics—we’re talking about building a democracy for ourselves in which the will of the people, all of the people, will reign supreme. A future where the American populace looks a lot more like Kamala Harris and less like Mitch McConnell. A future where our legislative power structure is representative and inclusive, where the lived experiences of women and people of color are not only considered but valued in the formation and passing of legislation. A future where Americans can represent themselves and see themselves represented. At the end of the day, if we want to make this idealized America a reality, we need to facilitate the end of white politics so that a new era of truly representative politics can begin. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

Happy Independence Day? - NOT! Now Reading by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse - The Scheme! Open Memoir

 




Kate Smith, in 1943 introduced a song that had been around even longer... I have been happily singing it through many celebrations of July 4th here in the United States.

But I awoke early this morning and found no joy in my heart or mind to sing... There have been many people who have talked about the danger of what the republican party and its backers have been planning for America and it sickens me to my stomach... Where and how and who are these people providing what is called "dark money" which is being used in so many different ways to break and destroy our American Democracy? Each jab leads me further into sorrow and PTSD, but I have to say that even at the worst of my depression, I have never felt so lost and discouraged for our country. Yes, I have God's strength and his refuge. But I find, in times like this, I have little patience to wait for the seemingly "miracle" it will take to correct and bring back all that has and is being destroyed... Too many people have already been hurt or died... 

I think I am like most Americans in many years. I had no reason to be concerned about the political life of America. I was thankful when Nixon was held accountable. I was proud when Obama was elected as President... That's about as far back as I can say I was in any way influenced by politics. During my career at West Virginia University, I had come to know Senator Byrd of West Virginia's activities to support our area, so I naturally turned to the democratic party seeing a man who was constantly involved with his state in one way or another. But I had never really voted or felt a "call" to... The country was moving forward while I was working hard to handle a new job and, hopefully, to move upward in positions on the campus. I became very involved in campus activities based upon the acts coming out of the government to improve people's lives: Civil Rights, Equal Pay Guidelines, Affirmative Action, Women's Concerns, The Disabilities Act... So many things that I wholeheartedly felt that the government had my back... And yet, even then, I have learned through reading that there were always those behind the scenes instigating changes, inciting prejudice...Only to see it fling the doors wide open in 2015...

When a group of those in the Evangelical sect of Christianity chose to support Donald Trump for president. I was shocked, mainly because I had already heard the "grab 'em by" tape... Then as I read a woman writing books discussing the Biblical Hebrew language translation, suddenly decide that she was grateful that Trump... Huh? What is going on... I even wrote questioning her and got no response... How could these people be supporting such a man as we were finding out more and more about his actions toward women, toward anybody who was not white, and even to those who were openly marching against Jews... Even now as I write, I begin to cry, upset. How could this be happening here in the country which once received a statue of liberty from France in honor of our freedom and welcome to all peoples...


This was the America that, my mother had quickly declared to me that I was an American, when I had asked about my heritage... She must have been devastated by the Nazi actions in the war and wanted me to not even think about my heritage... Now the Nazi flag and followers were part of the followers that attacked Our Nation's Capitol on January 6th! Incited by the past-president who now may never be held accountable! THIS CANNOT BE HAPPENING IN AMERICA, I CRY, YET IT IS! I find I am glad my mother is not here at a time when Nazi sympathizers play a role in the act of insurrection...

During the Trump administration, I was spending a lot of time glued to CNN, and later, MSNBC, which I found had more of a diversified news staff, which I appreciated... However, after he was at last voted out and yet kept on being part of political news, I could no longer deal with it emotionally. I chose to tape only The Last Word. I like the commentator, who had a background in Congress and I would listen to him each morning to catch up on the latest mess that was being created by the republican party affecting our lives.

It was on The Last Word that I first heard and learned of Senator Sheldon Whitehouse--and his books--who was keeping on top of what corruption was being done within the Supreme Court! I found a champion in his keen dedication to discover the Truth!




I have always been concerned about those who lie and refuse to accept responsibility, even if only saying a "I'm sorry." I've faced it in my own personal life and I of course constantly saw the former president refusing to acknowledge what we all heard him say as truth. And then lie about anything and anybody. I remember well the Kavanaugh trial. I believed the woman who was a professor, who accused him and watched his face as he tried to obfuscate rather than answer. Whitehouse notes that none of the investigations on questionable actions for candidates or the justices have ever been done.



It was bad enough for me to watch the former president in his constant lies, but, we now face the fact that the Supreme Court has become so bold that they are acting as planned in what is being openly announced that the republican party is moving toward. A Civil War (without the guns?) I have chosen not to read the 800+ page 2025 manifesto that SPECIFIEs what they plan to do... It should be noted that this is not a congressional document of the republican party...  The little I have heard is totally repulsive to a woman, to a Christian who strives to follow Jesus' command to love one another as we love ourselves... At this time in America, I quickly point out that I believe this is a broader and higher goal, similar to the "do no harm" philosophical statement. None of us are capable of not lashing out from time to time, but, I hope, the majority of us do not move to act to the detriment of other people...

And yet,,, The Scheme clarifies just how wrong my thinking has been... (Notice the expanded title!)


The Title Tells You Exactly What Has Happened! And we saw it happening... For instance, remember the Republican Majority Leader during Obama's presidency who refused to bring to Congress his appointment to the Supreme Court, using lies and delays...? That was the first step of The Scheme... Here are just a few selected excerpts. I recommend this book be read immediately if you value our Democracy... I'll be writing more once I get further into the book...

Justice removed, then, what are kingdoms but great bands of robbers? —SAINT AUGUSTINE

This book is dedicated to the small brave band of writers, researchers, and scientists who investigate and report on the poisonous creep of secret influence into America’s democracy.

...there’s no reason climate should be a “red” or “blue” issue—we all represent people who have lost their homes to floods, fires, or hurricanes; who have seen crops, herds, or fisheries suffer; who have had their air and water polluted. How had we gone so quickly from regular, bipartisan Senate work on climate change to gridlock? As I dug deeper, the parts fell into place. Citizens United had allowed the fossil fuel industry to use its massive money advantage to strike at this bipartisan progress, and it struck hard. Once the Supreme Court gave it the green light, the fossil fuel industry set its political forces to work instantly, targeting pro-climate-action candidates, particularly Republicans. Congressman Bob Inglis, for instance, was run out of the Republican Party over his climate heresy, crushed in a primary; being “Inglissed” became a word. A lurking climate denial apparatus, funded with anonymous money, shifted into high gear. Outside spending in 2010’s congressional races increased by more than $200 million over the previous midterm elections—a nearly 450 percent increase.2 My climate speeches became less about polar bears, pteropods, and science, and more about the fossil fuel industry’s dark-money front groups, which at any given time numbered sixty or more. I got my education in the dark arts of climate denial. I realized that dark money was the other side of the climate denial coin (as quipped by the republican party.) On several occasions, I rounded up Senate colleagues to speak in chorus about the “Web of Denial” that dark money funded to block climate action. I came to know the brave band of scientists who track this climate denial operation. I studied, and I learned. There was a lot of pain and anguish behind those climate speeches, and some anger, too. At the end of the day, I don’t know whether my long and often solitary effort accomplished a thing to advance the cause of climate legislation. I was up against the biggest political manipulation and disinformation campaign in modern history. My effort was probably a failure, a lost cause. I couldn’t not do it, however; I had to try, even if I was only beating my head against a wall. It was frustrating and maddening, and in the end perhaps in vain, but it accomplished one thing: it gave me an education into the massive dark money apparatus set up by the fossil fuel industry. So when the decision-making of the Supreme Court began to smell bad, when its decisions seemed increasingly outcome-oriented rather than reasoned in accordance with long-standing judicial principles, I had the instinct to look for dark money and phony front groups. Sure enough, not only did I find them, I found many of the same front groups and donor conduits that I knew from climate denial. They turned up, for instance, when the EPA issued its first-ever plan to limit carbon emissions from power plants and five conservative justices (then including Justice Scalia) blocked the law while it was still under review in the lower courts, before it had even reached them. This was a procedural eyebrow-raiser of a ruling without precedent in U.S. history, one that I reckon saved the fossil fuel industry $100 billion per year...

It’s easy to do the math. For simplicity, let’s use the $400 million from the hearing testimony. If you spend $400 million and get a $100 billion annual payback, you make your Court-capture investment back 1,000 times in four years. And that doesn’t count all the other helpful decisions a captured Court could provide. Capturing the Supreme Court is a lucrative scheme.

REGULATORY CAPTURE 
The Scheme to capture the Court has its roots in “regulatory capture.” Decades of research shows that when you regulate an industry, some actors in that industry don’t take it well. They don’t like oversight, much less oversight that is based on observable facts, that is informed by knowledgeable input and public comment, and that is implemented by career experts who know the industry well. A classic response by regulated entities has been to try to “capture” the agency meant to be overseeing them. A straight-up bribe could land you in prison, so capture is a longer and subtler game. This is a game with tactics. First and foremost, you try to control who gets appointed to the agency, and stack it with friends of industry. Put people in charge who will decide things your way. You can more or less take the agency over this way. You can also make sure that friendly members get cushy, well-paid, low-effort jobs when they leave the agency (the proverbial “revolving door”), and that the ones who are not sufficiently friendly get a cold shoulder. That sends a message. You can launch lobbyists at Congress to threaten the agency, putting its funding at risk or challenging its powers. You can bury the agency in paper blizzards of data, or burn its resources with endless litigation. You can develop pet theories that steer the agency toward the outcomes you seek. And you can promote a culture of chumminess so regulators forget they are supposed to be the referees and instead begin to see themselves as the pals of the regulated industry. This is what many people think happened with the SEC in the years leading up to the Great Recession, and what had happened at the Minerals Management Service prior to the massive explosion of BP’s drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Capture is a well-documented phenomenon. Hundreds of academic articles in dozens of academic journals have been written on regulatory capture, sometimes called “agency capture.”5 Big industries capturing agencies of government is a well-known and well-chronicled practice. For decades, this sordid practice was focused on regulatory agencies. It would have been indecent to think of our courts of justice, let alone our Supreme Court, as just another agency to be captured. But once someone had that idea, once that Rubicon of indecency was crossed, once powerful forces turned their arsenal on the Court, little stood between the Court and those weapons of capture. Once the decision was made to capture it, the Court fell with almost no resistance at all. Regulatory capture became Court capture. 

COVERT OPS 
In the same way that ordinary decency kept regulatory capture efforts away from the Supreme Court, until it didn’t, ordinary decency kept covert ops tactics overseas against foreign targets, until it didn’t. Regulatory capture and covert operations became the methodology of the Scheme. Intelligence agencies around the world use covert operations to meddle secretly in other countries’ affairs. The United States has used covert operations to disrupt our foreign adversaries, and the Soviet Union, and now Russia, have been particularly adept at deploying these techniques in satellite nations and within their self-proclaimed sphere of influence. Russia has recently begun targeting us with “information warfare” as well. There is a tradecraft to deploying that malign influence in other nations and disrupting what might otherwise be a functioning political and social system. The techniques of covert disinformation and manipulation will be familiar to anyone who’s a fan of spy novels: agents who pretend to be something other than they really are, hidden funding sources, co-opted local organizations, front groups that obscure who’s behind the covert op, false propaganda launched to drive division and spread disinformation. Players in this shadow world persist at falsehoods even when caught lying. Truth isn’t the point in covert operations; disinformation is deployed purposefully to drive social discontent, with the purpose secretly to control elements of the society. Our well-known Conman is a master at this!)


Covert ops are a good model for understanding a key element of court capture: it has to be clandestine. David Robarge, the chief historian of the Central Intelligence Agency, has explained that covert intelligence actions are usually not secretive in their impact—“the whole point … is to make things different … you want people to notice.”6 The trick is in hiding the hand that is pulling the strings and driving the operation. To run its climate denial “op,” the fossil fuel industry borrowed heavily from the covert ops playbook. And the Scheme borrowed heavily from fossil fuel’s climate denial operation. Both operations secretly control things, hide their identities, and can lie with impunity. Staying covert often means evading the laws that require financial transparency and disclosure—laws that are wildly popular across the American political spectrum. An elected official who wants to stay in office long can’t very well repeal those laws. But an unelected, unaccountable set of Supreme Court justices can. In fact, they already have.





Remember all those activities that I talked about that were created to support individuals in America, well, I've had to sit watching as announcements are being made of removing all those "restrictive" policies that are used to protect discrimination against individuals. Dark Money sees no American as worthy of attention...

There you have it on this July 4th, 2024... Imagine, the Dark Money that is funding much of what is happening could be from leaders of those countries who are authoritarian...who don't want us to be a successful Democracy... Money like that given to both of the Trump family members who were holding positions within the last president's administration. Deals were made for personal gain by both of them...

Whitehouse's book supports and documents all that we have been hearing about what Trump will do if he is elected IN JUST A FEW MONTHS! It makes it quite clear that what is being planned would eliminate a democracy by the people, for the people...meaning that voting just may NOT be in our future... Or, it would be a fake election such as that held by Putin in Russia. Instead there will be a king, whoever he may be, will really be a stooge for those holding the dark money that is out there being used to destroy the American Democracy... This is real, folks. And in my opinion, if you are not doing something to prevent it, you will have no right to be upset now or in the future. If you've never voted before, think hard! I didn't vote much before 2016. But you can be very sure that I will be voting AGAINST TRUMP and his cronies down ballot... I've read enough that documents the news being provided on legitimate stations. The 2024 Election may affect you and your children's lives... forever...

Today? Plan To Ensure Voting for the Democratic President and down the ballot... The Scheme has been developed to affect any form of government down to school boards to reflect only what somebody else other than YOU will rule... That is a Reality--a loss of our democracy (personal freedom)--That I Pray Will NEVER OCCUR! DO IT FOR YOUR KIDS! We have already lost many children because of the dark money provided by the NRA which prevents members of Congress from acting on gun control...Yes, It Can Get Worse!

Conspiracy or Plot for a Book - Was Biden Drugged Before Debate? Here's How An Avid Reader's "Saw" What Happened... Open Memoir

  

 You know folks, I've been told, and I have to agree that, when reading (or when it is important for some reason), I'm very good at following the storyline...

When I was working with a publisher, I would read a book and automatically find new errors, even though there were three people who read the book before me...

I could go on and on with examples of writers thanking me for helping proofread/edit just immediately before they send to printer... I always found either a few or many mistakes that had not been caught, even when supposedly the book had been professionally worked on...

But here's today's issue, I'm also good at remembering the things I want to remember... I may forget the names of those involved, but I remember the important words that stuck out to me at that time.

Take for instance, all of the news and/or books I have read since 2016 and what happened that year... But, for purposes of this specific post, I want to highlight what many saw as a planned attack on the Capitol on January 6th. You may remember phrases such as these...

"Proud Boys? Stand Down and Stand By"

"The Election was Stolen..."

"Find me >>>> amount of votes. That's all I need to win."

"Get Crazy Nancy Pelosi..." And Many Such Phrases that we later saw had led to violent action... You may remember before January 6th, that a man broke into the Pelosi's home and attacked her husband while looking for her..." Thus we know... Trump incites followers to act violently as directed... 

On the night of the debate, I did not watch it all the way through. I went to bed feeling sad... This was not the Joe Biden I knew... Then the next morning, I pulled up the television recordings that I had made from the previous night. I watch MSNBC mostly for such events. I like the commentators... That morning I saw a brief replay of an interview with Bob Woodward, the well-known and respected Journalist. He said one thing, "We Need to Find Out What Happened." 

It was almost as if my mind pulled up all of the specific videos that are played below. In them you will see that, for the first time in history, Trump started talking about Biden taking drugs... On a next one, he talked about a shot in his... Suddenly it hit me. Was Biden Drugged Before the Debate?

It certainly would explain what happened... (By the way, I also wondered if his mike had been turned purposely down) Let's look a little closer, shall we?

In light of the well-known actions/words by Trump that have led to violence in the past... it was quite easy to consider just why Trump would talk about a shot in his bottom... He expected one or more of his followers to carry out his inciting words...

Can't believe it is possible? When you get to the video where an MSNBC host is talking about the debate and Biden's issues with the Governor of California, you will see many people behind them that were handling the normal logistics for a television program. During that conversation, it was noted that Trump's candidates for VP were in the crowd and nobody was talking to them, as they roamed around... If you read a police procedure book, you would see that this shot shows the opportunity of getting near the President, as well as that there were Trump followers nearby... I can easily see someone either guiding Biden where to go, or Biden stopping to shake hands with somebody... you can see that there would be ample time for some type of pressure shot quickly directed being able to be done...

I understand that Biden seemed to rally toward the end of the debate...But still had some problems with mobility getting off the stage... However, by the time that Biden was talking to the followers who had gathered to meet with him after the debate, he was on a mike that carried his voice clearly... And, further, that he had absolutely no problems in communicating with this group...

Indeed, he had a rally the next day and was perfectly fine...

Am I just a conspiracy theorist? You be the judge in watching these videos which includes what I immediately remembered when Woodward spoke.

Trump talks about drugs...and Biden getting a shot of drugs... His speech was affected during the debate and Trump at one point mentioned not knowing what he said... But, even this is a key, when did you not know Trump belaboring the issue once he has started... over and over and over...?

I'm sorry that I don't know how to grab a section of the videos to which I referred, so I hope you'll take the time to listen... Personally, I am "almost" sure it happened just like I saw it flashing in my mind spotlighting what had happened... Thought or Questions welcomed...

Open Memoir - Remembering My Mother on Her Birthday... And Talking to Her About Today's America

 


Happy Birthday Mom! I've been spending a lot of time thinking about you lately... First, realizing that I am now older than you were when you died... And then, wishing you were still living with me in these days that are worse than anybody could have imagined... How I wish I could talk to you daily about what is happening in America, supposed land of the free, yet so much is moving in the wrong direction... I remember you would often when it seemed we were all in a mood, that you would say, "Want me to Sing?" and "Beautiful Dreamer" would come out so that we immediately moaned and laughed... Now I wish you were here sleeping now, as I write... and things would be easier, somehow...

You know, Mom, I never understood your telling me that "God always takes the good ones first when talking about my father having died before I was born. It didn't make sense to me that God could be a part of my not ever having a father. But, then, later, when I learned of You, I knew that I would always have a Father... But perhaps, Mom, your having made that statement when I was young, started me on the road to the "Why?" type of person that I was to become... 


I moved the music box playing "Those Were The Days" to sit on the stand next to my chair, remember my first thought when I bought it for the song, that the old grandmother type in the chair rocking and sewing, never did remind me of you... You were always working, doing something... Mostly for others who paid you as a nurse and more... I think you looked a little like Edith Bunker where this song was played in the beginning of Archie Bunker....


So why am I looking backward today? Because, right now, the republican party is trying to move us back into those early years and the democrats are still trying to do what is right for the people, moving forward instead of backward... And, Mom, there is so much happening with the party that I guess you were a member of, although you never talked about it... All of your family that I know of, other than me, are in the republican party... and I can't help but wonder... Why? Especially after the last decision of The Supreme Court... I can't help but think that there will be nothing to celebrate this July 4th if the republicans have their way...Electing a criminal as our next president...even after what he did in his first term... Why? Mom? Here's what I believe Mom...the same as our democratic president, President Biden:


Mom, what is worse is that the republican party is trying to move away from the teachings of Christ... And, I believe, that many do not truly understand what is going on, including your family... At least one person I'm able to talk to understands...


Mom, I believe that God is leading me in reading the right books and sharing them with those who are seeking answers... And yet, as recently as this past month, family members are unwilling to listen to what I say... Mom, I must follow what I believe God is asking me to do... There is so much hate and violence in today's world... Children are even being killed during school hours! Yet the republican party continues to refuse to do anything about access of guns... I am being guided to speak for God--not my family... I remember Jesus' words that if I go into a place where Jesus' words are not the guiding role in their lives, that I should leave and wipe the dust from my feet...

Matthew 10:14-16 New International Version (NIV)If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet. Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.

God is sending so many signs and books to me--nonfiction books that I would never otherwise read...So much is being said and it supports what I believe. I hope you understand that I must put God above family... 

On the other hand, I feel closer to God than I have ever felt before... And know I speak as Jesus... Here's a song that I've adopted as, sort of, an anthem for today's world...

Like It? I remember when we still lived in New Geneva and you'd be lying on the couch in the living room... You'd ask me to sit down and play hymns. Often when there were others there, you'd ask us to sing... Songs about Jesus was so much a part of my early life... And it continues today with new beautiful songs that are being created by the young Americans who are more and more speaking out against the hate, the violence, and the lies... Mom, nowadays, we aren't even sure if what is being said on television is the Truth... I don't mean in fictional programs, but from some news agencies! They purposely lie!  Here's a perfect example, as, after hearing the above full speech from our president, this individual chose to spread lies with it...

Mom, the constitution is in danger! Can you image that, after 200 years, that the republican party and what is called, now, Christian Nationalists, are working against the rights of the people to govern America!

Mom, I remember many years ago that I asked you about our background... I am German on both sides of my ancestral families... Your immediate, and only, response was that "You are American." Today, when I think about that, I realize that you were expressing a very important fact for us--that we were Americans, first, and our ancestors were really not changing that. Now, all I see, Mom, is that the republican party wants to make America a land of "white" people... So what does that mean to all of those in America who were/are non-white. It seems to me that the present republican party is against all that Jesus taught--to love our neighbors as ourselves... And, to love God above all... What I have come to see, and know, is that if those who claimed to be Christians had actually, taken these two--only TWO--guiding points from Jesus, that we would not now be in the situation that we are in! I want to write more about this...but, as your son-in-law Bill, used to say, "That's on another Page..."
