Michael Phillip Case Crashes Genres With Witches Protection Program - Verrrry Cool!

 When I hear the word witch, I first think of the two from the classic film...

Hey, the beautiful witch's name was Glinda so I was partial to her, you might say... But, then, The Charmed Ones came along and we witch followers were entranced by these good witches as well...

Witches have been around since the beginning, but the most notoriety was when the Pilgrims started killing...people...whether they were witches or not... Sometime during the more enlightened years, the government stepped in to provide protection and the Witches Protection Program was born, according to Michael Cash...

"You're crazy, dude," Wes smiled lazily.

"Not so crazy. They've been around for years, living underground, hiding their abilities. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. The history of witches and our country goes way back. Please pay attention to the monitor." Alastair gestured to the far wall. West noticed he aimed a remote at the blank space.

Imaged flickered on a screen West hadn't noticed was there. It filled the room with cinema quality actors, and West Stretched out his long legs, getting comfortable.

It was a black and white grainy documentary style. The words Salem, Massachusetts, 1692 identified the time period. Fields of corn and small cottages, clearly New England streets. Wes admitted the realism of the set...

"I knew we shouldn't-a let Good Prudence in which her potions..."

Witches Protection Program

By Michael Phillip Cash

Wes Rockville is a cop, maybe not the best but maybe part of his problem was that he reported to his father and his sister was a distinguished prosecutor in New York City... But, then, Wes did seem to mess up on what would be several simple cases--like not being able to transport one little old lady...

All he had been told was to not look her in the eyes...But he must have...

And his father was on the line and Wes was given his last assignment, or he would be kicked out! He had been assigned to the Witches Protection Program...

A secret part of the force referred to as DUMBO...

...West ambled to a darkened corner of the street,
pressing the phone to his ear to make sure he
heard the message correctly. He stared absently
at the setting sun that washed the sky to a faint
pink. The light wind ruffled his jacket, sending
a chill down his spine. It was an unfriendly street;
there was not a pedestrian, baby carriage, or even
a delivery bicycle in sight. The policeman in Wes
scoured the facade of the brownstones, looking
for a hint of life. There was not even a chirping
bird. The sound of cars racing overhead created
a wind-tunnel effect, so the whole place had an
unearthly air.
"The line you've called is currently out of service"
Shit, he messed up. He blew air through his lips
in a rush. "Please leave a message after the beep."
Closing his eyes wearily, he repeated the number
again, then looked back at his phone, the glare
painting his face blue. The sun disappeared,
bathing the entire street in blue...West shivered
in the cold. Wait a minute. He paused. What
line that is out of service takes messages? He
redialed the number. West anticipated the beep
and held the phone close to his mouth. He said
softly, "Alastair? This is Wes."
~~~
Now I found this totally plausible. After all, humans don't have a good history of accommodating to individuals that are different from them... Besides, it had been recognized that many witches were able to provide support for the needs of the world...
But that's when the fun begins...
(pop. less than 1200 according
to Wiki)
Wes is unable or unwilling to accept that witches actually exist! But now, he will be out of a job if he doesn't proceed with the reassignment. So he heads on down to DUMBO--Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, but he couldn't find the place!
And the rest of his getting to work is, to be brief, mind-boggling... To Wes, that is; to the readers, it is humorous and quickly gets us totally involved in this strange world where quite a bit of their work is saving the good witches (Davinas) from the bad (Willa).
"The accusations caused a great schism.
Witches split into two factions: the
Davinas and the Willa. Both groups
continued to practice their brands of
magic even though they disappeared
into the fabric of society. Davinas
mastered medicine and healing. You
may have known one as a teacher or a
nurse. They used their powers for the
good of mankind.
The Willa went dark--very dark--
embracing the nefarious arts and
anything that thwarted goodness.
But first Wes sits through a lengthy documentary of what has happened to witches in the past...in which Wes is certain that Jennifer Aniston stars!  His mind began to wander a little, but was quite shaken when he realized he would no longer use his Glock!
First he received a Steampunk Vaporizer, then a Darrow Trance Lifter,  a mirror, which he was told would be used--at times when he would know how to use it--and, finally, a roll of duct tape.
And then he was given his first assignment. He read through the folder materials and responded, "I won't do it." Which was quickly followed by a need for him to turn in his resignation... In other words, he didn't have a choice...
He was going to be introduced to Junie "Baby Fat" Meadows of the Meadows Witch family. On the way, Wes at least found out she was Davina...
Soon they were in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and entering the home of Pendragon Cosmetics, known to most women throughout the world. It was a lower-end cosmetic found in most drugstores.
A squat woman wearing a polyester skirt and a vest-like apron covered in shamrocks walked down an alley of containers, a clipboard under her arm and a pen designed to look like a tree branch in her gnarled hand. She had unkempt, mousy hair, with a tortoiseshell barrette holding it back from her bulbous eyes. Spider veins created a road map on her flabby face, and most would call her ugly. Junie "Baby Fat' Meadows didn't mind. She had a magic mirror at home, so it didn't matter.
And Junie is about to be called to the office by her "pain in the ass" boss... She has an idea of what is going on, but it could be dangerous for her to do anything on her own... Morgan, niece of the head of the company, soon also learns she is in danger... Alastair and Wes are called to the rescue. Wes takes one look at Morgan, thinks she can't possibly be a witch, then decides he doesn't care if she is!
And then the fight is on!
"You're a witch!" Dominic shouted.
"No shit, Sherlock," Scarlett replied, pointing to a container thirty feet high. "Box them in, seal the door, ship them all to Singapore."
...Scarlett turned to the vast cavern of the warehouse, the drumming from the men imprisoned in the metal box becoming fainter as she walked the aisles. "Oh, little playmate," she began iin a singsong voice. "Come out and play with me. You'll bring your dollies three. Climb up my apple tree..." her voice had a breathy quality that echoed down the deserted warehouse. "Cry down my rain barrel. Slide down my cellar door..."
Morgan's foot slipped. The singing stopped abruptly. Scarlett's eyes widened, an evil smile on her face. She wet her lips, beginning the song again. "And we'll be jolly friends..." Scarlett tossed aside a heavy container with her bare hands, her mouth a snarl as she finished the childhood ditty, expecting to find her prey. "Forevermore!" Morgan wasn't there. Scarlett sniffed the air; she knew the girl was nearby. "Come out, come out, wherever you are!"
~~~

There is an underlying edge of humor throughout the entire book, but some places are even hilarious! For me, I enjoyed this one more than any other novel by Cash. This is the kind of humorous mystery that is worthy of a series and I hope the author considers more activities for the Witches Protection Program! The characters are wonderfully drawn, reminiscent of other witches stories, but with a unique twist that, I believe, is the first providing witch protectors!

The blend of old instruments used by witches, such as brooms, combined with contemporary cosmetic schemes has brought a delightful, fully satisfying--and without much violence--novel that is exciting, audacious, with an innovative humor that will be fun for all readers--YA and above!

Photos and Words from Adolfo In Recognition of Boston Marathon...

Boston Marathon

By Adolph Adolfo Caso

Deep from within the culture of Greece
Thousands of souls have run into my heart
Each carrying a single candle
Whose lights have illuminated
The heavens in our universe—
Alive and throbbing, even though
Four more un-destructible souls
Have been made
To populate my sad heart.

On perusing the artifacts at Copley Square
And reading the words of those surviving,
Either in phrases or graffiti,
I do not read about those
Who thought-up, helped, planned
And executed another criminal disaster
Against an innocence
Inherent
In the human heart.
Memories stand out on the meaning
Of the Boston Marathon
Shown through
The sandals left behind by those who walked it,
The sneakers left behind by those who ran it, and,
The wheel chairs left behind by those who drove it
To show that life is precious--
To be cherished rather than to be destroyed.

The Marathon is a representation
Of days coming together
With people from all over the world
Of every race, culture and creed
Competing with the sole object
Of finishing,
Together as one,
As if the human race were one Great Spirit
Growing without dimensions or time--
Like water
That should run
Into the oceans of our hearts.

 Come, pick up a cap,
And watch the runners compete against themselves;
Or,
Choose a pair of sneakers and run with me,
However short the distance may be;
Better still,
Take over any wheel chair
And give the people of your world
A heritage of triumphant life
Instead of pre-determined death!

Third in Series by Mary Metcalfe Spotlights Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injuries to Soldiers!

"This is the Massachusetts State Trooper's Office."
"Sean frowned and put the beer down. He ran a hand over the blonde buzz cut. "Did you find my wife?"
"No, sir. But we can confirm that she was in a single vehicle collision on the night of April eighteenth about an hour and a half outside Boston. She was taken to St. Luke's hospital with head injuries. It is unknown where she went after being discharged..."
"Do you have any information on her whereabouts now? With the head injuries, I'm worried she may have amnesia. Our children want their mommy to come home." Sean's eyes were hard and cold as he picked up the beer and took a long pull.
"We have no information sir. There was no crime and no property damage. No charges were laid."
"Thank you, officer. Where did you say the accident happened?...
"Walking into the living room, he sat down in his favorite chair and looked over to Andrea's empty one; it was next to a basket that had once held children's books and colorful magazines. "I'm coming to bring you home where you belong, Andrea. You can run, but you can't hide. I will find you. Bet on it, bitch..."

Road to Tomorrow
By Mary Metcalfe

For learning new, important information from fiction novels, Mary Metcalfe's third in her series, is not only her best, but beats out many other novels that help to share today's news through their writing. Specifically, let's go right to that... Have you ever heard of "traumatic brain injuries (TBI)? Many are writing about PTSD as being faced by many of our soldiers, but TBI has some scary statistics. Here's a little about what Mary shares in her Afterword:
There are over 300,000 American military service personnel returning from combat duty in Iraq and Afghanistan who have these injuries. A tragic consequence of inadequately treated TBI is suicide. And, in fact, deaths by suicide now actually outpace combat deaths in the American military... TBI is marked by the kinds of symptoms and actions described in this novel...
If you know somebody who is back from these or other wars, I highly recommend you consider this novel a must read and that you share it with other families whose relatives may have received such injuries! Suicide is tragic, but there are worse events that can be caused... Let me tell you about what Andrea Garrett was facing in her life...

"Val says it's your ex-husband who is at St. Luke's.
How is he?"
"Not good. He'll probably never regain full mental
capacity. The surgeon told me he has traumatic
brain injuries. I don't know what those are, but I
tend to find out."
"I heard on NPR that a lot of servicemen are coming
back with them. They call it TBI, for short. It didn't
have a name until Iraq and Afghanistan. But I'm sure
it's been around as long as there've been bombs.
They called in shell shock back in World War Two...
"Basically, any injury to the brain causes some level
of trauma. For our guys overseas, it's caused mostly
by bomb blasts and vehicle accidents. With a bomb,
there's a wall of air pressure created when it goes
off. The nearby soldiers get thrown to the ground
or against an object. The brain slams against the
back of the skull, rebounds and slams against
the front of the skull..."
~~~
The book opens as Andrea is trying to leave her abusive husband, but he catches her, takes her suitcases, dumps then into the bathtub and runs water...destroying all of them...
Sean was adamant that she would not leave him, that he was fine--in fact, he was still on active duty...
But each time he came home, he was worse and this time, Andrea escaped before he was due home from his latest tour...
She had left her children with her twin brother who still didn't want to see her leave--her husband was his best friend. But her mind was made up. She was afraid for her children...
Heading for Boston, Andrea "thankfully" had a car accident. Thankfully, because she was found by Carol and Devin, who series readers will have already met, and when she was able to leave the hospital, they took her home to the ranch (which you might have read about in New Beginnings, the second novel in the series)...
With the kindness of people like Carol, Devin and others in this small town, Andrea soon knew she had found where she wanted to stay. With friendly help, she soon had an apartment, a job, and was able to bring the children to live with her...
And when she shared more about her personal life, she soon was hooked up with a good lawyer and filing for divorce...
Of course, Sean returned home, but found nobody who was willing to help him! He went to the police to file a missing person's report... and then his injuries and resultant symptoms took over... When Sean went after Andrea and made it to where she was now living, I loved how the community took over! Val and her husband who own the town's main restaurant, the gay couple living on the ranch and many others spread the word that he was there... You'll so enjoy what happens! At least I did, LOL!
But as the story goes on, secrets from the past are revealed, which ultimately makes Sean even more dangerous! An important read... It makes for a terrific thriller but...it could be very real... I happened to watch Dr. Phil yesterday (and today) where an abusive man and his "meek" friend who wants out of the relationship are being interviewed! As soon as I saw this man, I thought that he must have had some form of TBI... This issue is real. Learn about it, maybe starting with this novel to see symptoms! Highly recommended!
Mary Metcalfe's Excitingly Romantic...But Think "Fatal Attraction!"
"Good to see you too, Allison. How's your mother?" She tried to remember where the litter box was.
"She can't communicate at all. The stroke was so severe she'll probably never walk again."
"I'm sorry to hear that. You must be very worried about her." Carol stepped into the hall and moved towards the kitchen.
"Let's do a little tour then and make sure everything is ready..."
"You should know I've already put away everything of any value." Allison's eyes were hard.
"If you're referring to the con artist, he's now in prison for what he did." Carol smiled thinly. Allison hadn't even attempted to veil her snide comment. Most people weren't so blunt. "I'm sure the house is in showcase condition, but let's go have a quick look. It'll remind me of the features I want to play up." As Carol strode away, she didn't see Allison's piercing stare...
"The new owners will have a major redecorating project on their hands. I see some cars parked out front. Let's let the first visitor in." Time to get going, she thought, looking at her watch. As she opened the front door, she saw Devin Elliot striding up the walk. Of course, he'd be the first to arrive..."Hello, Devin Figured you'd be first."
"Hello, Carol. I need to warn you about something. This house and I have some history.
If Allison Wendover is here, it could get ugly."
"She's here. Should I call the police?"
"It won't get that ugly but--"
"What are you doing here, Devin?" Allison had come to the door and stood, legs akimbo, with her hands on her narrow hips. Carol glanced between the two of them, thinking she wasn't the only one who'd managed to get on Allison's bad side. She couldn't help but wonder what Devin had done.
"I'm here to see your mother's house, of course. It's a free world last time I checked."
"You are not welcome here." Allison's eyes blazed with anger.
"I don't have to be welcome. My money's as good as the next person's."
Carol watched in some alarm as the two titans suddenly squared off. "Allison. Can we please take this inside?" Carol could feel the electricity arcing off the two adversaries...Three couples on the sidewalk were watching the altercation with interest.
"He is not coming into this house."
"I most certainly am. I will simply call the police if you don't let me in to view this publicly advertised Open House."
Carol recognized the molten color of Devin's eyes. He was angry. Very angry. "Allison, you don't have a legal right to bar him from seeing the house. As your agent, I must ask you to step aside, let him in, and we'll go from there...
"When Allison moved to object, Carol cut her off. "Are we clear on this?
There are other prospective buyers waiting outside in the cold..."
New Beginnings
By Mary Metcalfe
This is my favorite of the three read this weekend... Of course, you all know I go for suspense with my romance and this one has a female that I really enjoyed hating! What more could I want, besides a pair of lovers to watch come together! Carol Brock, best friend of Jennifer in Winds of Change comes to the "star" role in New Beginnings. She's had some bad experiences with men in the past and twice got burnt on the job because issues which really were not her fault. But, as we know, often that doesn't make any difference if there are others who resent you for some reason...
And Carol was somebody you either looked to as a role model...or hated, because she was so good at selling. Her activities with real estate in Boston had made her a very wealthy woman... During the last year, though, she had finally realized that she was not really happy. Her children, in college, were distant, not having had much time with her, due to Carol's hours on the job, even at nights and weekends when most people looking to buy were available and wanting to view the properties...
"When I met you and saw the fire in your eyes, you
reminded me of Aero and Sabrina. [horses] He traced
a finger along the line of her shoulder. "So high-
spirited and beautiful." Carol half closed her eyes
as his hand slowly explored under her sweater. "I
want us to take this slowly, Carol, but I don't think
I can. You've touched my heart in a way no other
woman has in many years...
"Outside, Aero and Sabrina nuzzled heads as the
eagles flew high in the soft November light..."
~~~
Right now, she's responsible for the sale of a beautiful Victorian home, whose owner is now in a rest home and who dies during the novel, making it even more of a...shall we say, challenge!

At the same time, Carol, who has stayed away from men since the last few have caused much havoc in her life, meets a new one, who convinces her she's made the right decision! Because when she met him, in a parking lot, he had parked too close to her vehicle, and knocked off her side mirror! Carol couldn't even get into her car, so she promptly took a camera, sent it to the police and called a tow truck!

Off course the owner came just as the tow was to begin and took the brunt of her anger quite nicely, apologized, and finally started to laugh at her! Well...any woman knows how Carol reacted to that laughter!

But from bad beginnings...

It soon got worse!

Devin Elliott, architect, Boston's most eligible bachelor, and destroyer of vehicle mirrors, wants to buy the Victorian home for which Carol is responsible! And he wants an early viewing, which she refuses. Then, when he's the first at the open house, the daughter of the owner, refuses to allow him to enter! Carol stands in the midst of their screaming, while other interested customers watch from the sidewalk! Another real estate nightmare for Carol! But Allison has friends and connections... And, this time, Carol is suspended!

Now that should leave you hanging and wanting to know more, right? Well, let's just say that Devin used to date the owner's daughter, but it's been years ago. Only to Allison, she has never gotten over him...and if Carol has any type of relationship with him, even if just professional, Carol is now part of all that must happen!

Compelling drama, outrageous stalking, arson and much, much more! I loved it and think you will too! See yesterday's review for Debut Winds of Change and next in series Road to Tomorrow here tomorrow!

Tribute to Weston Massachusetts Veterans Also Recognition for all American Veterans!

Weston Veterans:
 World War II

By Adolph and
  Margaret Caso

Weston, Massachusetts, USA.
Weston, Massachusetts, USA. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

When I was asked to review this book, I had to pause and consider how...After all, this would be somewhat like individual biographies, but would also be an historical collection that would be valuable to researchers in general, as well as World War II in particular.
Weston, Massachusetts, USA.
Weston, Massachusetts, USA. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Then there were also individuals who had not represented America during that war. Rather they were in countries that were perhaps much more affected by what was happening where they were.

The one common thing for all of them was that they were now living in Weston, Massachusetts and this was certainly a tribute for the place where they all decided to call home. Was it a special town? Or did it just happen to be the home of Adolph and Margaret Caso, who represent Branden Publishing?!

It is their work and research that brought the book into existence, but the veterans are the stars of the book!

And that's what I found the most important for these individuals... This is indeed a fantastic tribute to America's Veterans, no matter where they now live, or where they now rest...

It was then I realized that the individual names of these individuals would only be known by their friends and
families, but that their stories would be meaningful to many. That's what I wanted to share and highlight in the review...

Here's something that I found important: I wondered why more individuals did not see this powerful truth...and choose not to follow tyrants...

"Realism and idealism seldom come together except to create utopias that exist only in thoughts wrapped in fiction and begotten with blood. Utopianism, as the ultimate goal for mankind, is always found in the inception stage of future tyrants. The number of human lives sacrificed on behalf of that attainment is beyond belief and comprehension. The numbers of incidents (from the one-man terrorist bomber who kills twenty innocent humans, to many-men organized attackers who kill by the hundreds and thousands) are conducted to achieve one goal: to capture power and confirm the authority of that power by the tyrants themselves.

The authors pointed out a quote from Roger Carpenter that is worthy of highlighting here: "Yes we succeeded, thanks in no small part to individuals like me--a simple driver who knew how to drive well, doing his job and shutting up about it."

Indeed!

Herb Baron acknowledged that active duty turned him from a boy to a man...

George Bulwinkle was thrown on a pile of dead bodies! While Austin Cribben, when discovering a a German soldier was begged to be spared as a father with children! (How many men never really want to be sent to war!?)

Clifford Harrington's hobby of training homing pigeons was later used during the war!

While David Kingsburg lived simply because he chose to go get a candy bar while those who waited in the jeep were all killed... His question: How                                             do you tell, let alone explain, something like this?"

Each of the Veterans living in Weston are introduced initially with a short paragraph. There follows are short biographies of each, which includes any material that they had, including pictures, letters, etc.

One story I particularly like was about John Saunders who was born in Poland, lived under a doomed country, then under Communism and Finally under Nazism. He believes he lucked out simply because he was Aryan-looking as any blonde, blue-eyed German...Of course, he also had forged papers... His own book is entitled the Memoirs of John R. Saunders: Prisoner, Officer, Winner...

For those back home, sometimes they received

Hello Darling,

Tonight I can tell you I am in Nuremburg. This is the place which Hitler called the "Most German of all cities." It was the place of many great Nazi meetings. "Hitler's Temple." Here the people waves Nazi flags from the countless windows of the innumerable apartment houses as the haughty SS troopers stormed by on the cobblestone streets below.

It was a city chuck-full of tradition, but how things have changed. The once beautiful buildings are now nothing but piles of pulverized debris. The flags still hang from the windows but there are no swastikas because they have been all bleached white--the token of surrender. These countless windows will not have to be cleaned for some time because most of them are glassless. In short, all is "kaput."

Today, the guys went to a brewery and came back with 5 big kegs. Tonight, we'll all be drinking beer. In normal times, the Bavarian beer is supposedly the best obtainable, but because of the war, the beer is not its best--it tastes something like cider without the apples, very synthetic. One could drink several kegs without getting the least bit intoxicated. Once here, everyone drinks it, just like we drink Coke here in the states. Even and 9 and 10 year-old children.

How are the boys treating you? I know Steve must be still a baby, but Den--it's so hard to visualize him now--must be such a big boy, inquisitive and domineering. Is he just as sincere as ever? Does he still have that Harvard accent? You mentioned not being able to get the correct shoes for the boys; did they have them at Thompson's Factory?

I'm going to have to close now dear. I have to go "on guard" over to the motor pool. I will be on duty from 20:15 to 23:30.

Tomorrow being Sunday, is a day of rest and no reveille at 6:30. Chow won't be served until 8 o'clock, so I can sleep a bit late for once. So, good night, darling and take good care of yourself and the boys.
I love you...
Austin...

Frances O'Neil is the only female Weston Veteran. When her four brothers enlisted, she wasn't satisfied in not following their example and finally talked her mother into signing approval for active duty, when she was 20. She joined the Coast Guard, a new branch of the service at that time, and had many other young women.

Aside from the routine duties she performed, she was also able to go dancing at the USO every night! When she came back home, she got a job at the Arthur Murray's Studio! Now that's what I call a story!

There are so many different memories, stories, pictures for enjoyment! I have to tell you my own story with the book...I noticed a picture of a handsome young man in his uniform...So I was interested in learning more about him! LOL... Wouldn't you know that Harry and Ann Baker have been married for 72 years! Wow, Lucky Woman...!!! But it was wonderful to see their pictures when first married and then one so many years later!

Highly recommended! Well done and a joy to explore...Keep it on your permanent library shelf to visit often!
