Carolyn Arnold! Presents Murder at the Lake From the Detective Madison Knight Mystery Series

Madison Knight didn’t even recognize her own reflection in the mirror. She wore makeup, having been applied at the hands of a skilled cosmetician who did house calls. She was lucky any other day to slap on foundation. Her hair, that was usually tousled like the crown of a cockatoo, was professionally styled. Each strand lying in harmony with the others. A tiara sat on top of her head, the cubic zirconias winking in the light as if they were real diamonds and not imposters. More of these jewels nestled against her collarbone and dangled from her earlobes. It had been a surprise her piercings hadn’t closed up, as neglected as they were. The most shocking thing was her body draped in a white gown. She wasn’t a fan of formal, and she was far from a blushing virgin. If she’d had her way, she’d have walked down the aisle in a cream pantsuit. The only reason she conceded to the traditional garb was due to the petitioning from her mother, sister, and her best friend, Cynthia Baxter. Or one could call it a guilt trip. They had all said, “Can’t you be a girl for one day in your life?” So here she was all decked out, smelling of floral perfume, wearing jewelry and a gown, a garter belt, and lacy underthings. She had drawn the line at a thong, though, and went bikini. “Just when I thought this day would never come.” Her mother came up behind her and put an arm around her. Jeez, thanks! Mothers were expected to get sentimental on their daughter’s wedding day. Cheek to cheek, looking at their reflection in a mirror and tearing up. Not Donna Knight. She was checking marriage off the list she’d had in mind for Madison’s life from the time she was born. “Oh, Mom, be nice.” Chelsea, Madison’s younger sister by six years, stepped in to her defense. Chelsea was the “golden child,” wife for over eleven years and mother to three girls. If their mother was counting on grandchildren from Madison, she’d be disappointed. “I’m not being mean. I was just saying.” Her words said one thing, her tone another. Donna presumed to know what was best for everyone. She was right while everyone else was wrong. “Just let it go. Please,” Chelsea beseeched, adding a smile to her request, which had their mother holding up her hands. Madison faced those in the room. Present were her mother, sister, her six-year-old niece, who was the flower girl, and Cynthia. Her friend looked the least comfortable, as she was due to give birth to her first baby in a few weeks. She complained of being bloated and said her belly was the size of an inflated beachball. Those were her friend’s words, and Madison wouldn’t dare to agree. She’d faced off with Russian Mafia hit men, but she wasn’t prepared to face the wrath of her pregnant friend.

They were all gathered in the primary bedroom of Madison’s new home, which was acting as a bridal suite today. She and her fiancĂ©, Troy Matthews, were already living together and had been for over a year. But this house was new to them. Though it wasn’t to Madison. In fact, she had a history with the home, and it held special meaning for her. It had belonged to her mother’s parents, and Madison always had a special bond with her grandma Rose. Their relationship wasn’t formal, didn’t stand on pomp and ceremony. Her grandmother welcomed Madison to call her by her first name, and their bond was tight. It was why Madison put in an offer without a second thought when the house hit the market a few months ago. From her first walk-through, the feeling of her grandmother’s presence cemented the deal. Madison was meant to share her life with Troy in this house. She imagined Grandma Rose was smiling down at her from heaven today. Cynthia sucked in a deep breath through her teeth and grinned. “Well, are you ready? You do look incredible.” Not that looking good was the barometer for determining readiness, but Madison graciously accepted the compliment and kissed her friend’s cheek. “Just one toast, and we’ll head down.” Chelsea poured champagne into three flutes and filled two with sparkling nonalcoholic cider. One of these was for Cynthia, the other for Madison’s niece. After everyone had their drinks in hand, they raised their glasses following Chelsea’s lead. She toasted, “To Madison and Troy finding a life of happiness and love.” Everyone echoed the sentiment and added, “Here, here.” Glasses were clinked and generous sips taken. Madison lowered her glass, and with the motion, it was as if the import of today was finally sinking in. This was actually happening. She was getting married. While she’d been engaged in the past, she never got this close to going through with it. Her previous fiancĂ© had been a cheat, and it took Madison a solid decade to give love another chance. But that heartache had brought her to where she was now. With Troy. And the universe had blessed her.

 Troy was so much more than Toby Sovereign had ever been. Troy understood her and held to the same values. He appreciated that honesty, loyalty, and integrity were the foundations of any lasting relationship and a code to live by. But he’d experienced Madison’s pain for himself when his first wife and supposed best friend betrayed him by having an affair. Instead of letting it ruin his view on love, though, it gave him the understanding and patience Madison required from him. He offered a supportive shoulder, despite her inclination to handle everything on her own. Chelsea gathered Madison’s glass and set it down with hers. She tapped a finger to Madison’s tiara. “All right, are you ready to roll?” Madison’s heart picked up speed. Her impulse was to run and hide. And she hated running. The thought of Troy waiting for her had her nodding. She tapped her clammy palms against her gown and took some calm, even breaths. “Okay, let’s do this.”

Her sister smiled at her, her eyes disclosing she had read Madison’s fears. But she wasn’t good at hiding her feelings, which was both a blessing and a curse. The group made their way to the main level with Madison’s mother leading the way. The ceremony was being held in the living room. Her mother would go in first, and Troy would walk her to her seat at the front. The bridal party stopped midway down the steps, and her mother continued. Oh, this is getting real! When Madison and the rest of them landed in the entry, the French doors were once again closed, and the curtains they had installed would keep Troy from seeing Madison too early. This was just one change that was made to facilitate the wedding. Their regular furniture was stored in the basement, and a rental company had brought in chairs and handled the setup of those. Another business took care of the decorating. Madison’s and Troy’s jobs with the Stiles Police Department didn’t leave them much spare time, so they delegated what they could. It hadn’t been a small feat to convince her to book two weeks off from work for their honeymoon. He sold her on a week at a five-star resort in Cancun, Mexico, followed by a week of nesting at home to celebrate a quiet Christmas. It would be them and Hershey, her chocolate Lab. Speaking of… Hershey wagged his tail at the sight of Madison and wriggled his body toward her, but Terry, her job partner, had him on a leash and gently encouraged him to stay back. But what she would give for just a brush of his velvet ears. “It’s okay,” she told Terry. “Maddy, your dress,” Chelsea cautioned. Hershey was so excited that he was starting to whimper. Between that and the bow tie he had around his neck for his upcoming performance as ring bearer, Madison smiled. “Hey ya, fella.” She reached out, keeping some distance between herself and the dog, but she would have loved to inundate the guy with cuddles. A pantsuit would have been more conducive to that, which she’d point out, but why waste her breath? His ears were so soft, and they chipped away at her stress. Terry wasn’t the only one in the entry. There were four other men. One of whom was Madison’s father. He did a double take when he saw her. His eyes watered, and it had her tearing up. “You are beautiful, sweetheart.” He braced his hands on her upper arms and leaned in and kissed her cheek. When her father pulled back, Terry stepped up in his place. They were more than work friends. He was like the brother she never had, but she was likely to lose him soon. He’d passed the sergeant’s exam and desired to settle behind a desk, where there was less risk of some psycho killing him. For the wedding, his role was master of ceremonies. He was also responsible for cuing up the music and opening the doors along with Lou Stanford, Cynthia’s husband. “You, wearing a dress?” Terry teased with a wink. “You actually look like a—” “If you say girl, I might…” Madison narrowed her eyes and formed a fist. She drew her arm back as if she were going to hit his shoulder. He juked out of the way. It was a long-running schtick between them. Though she usually made contact, and he’d make a show of pretending to be wounded. Just further proof they were more like brother and sister than simply colleagues and friends. The two of them started laughing, but it rang somewhat hollow. It wasn’t far from mind that everything between them was about to change. Terry hugged her, firm yet not too tightly, to not crush her dress. Lou was the next to step up. He smiled and dipped his head. It was Madison who opened her arms for a hug. He was her best friend’s husband, and a good friend and family by extension. Marc Copeland and Nick Benson, who were standing up for Troy, waited there in their tuxedos, hands clasped together in front of them like they were bouncers at a bar. They had known Troy for over a decade and reported to him in the Special Weapons and Tactics division. Like him, both were muscular and over six feet. Marc was especially built like a tank, and his primary task on the SWAT force was breacher. Nick was a shield operator. They hugged her and kissed a cheek, having grown close to her over the time she’d been with Troy. “You ready?” Terry asked her. She eyed the front door, then looked at him. “If I wait any longer, I might take my cold feet and run out of here.” An empty threat. As nervous as she was to take the step of marriage, she hadn’t been this sure about anything in her life. “You? Run? By choice? That would be a first.” This time she did hit Terry’s shoulder. He pretended it hurt. But he deserved the potshot. Terry showed her up by running miles on his treadmill every morning. What sick bastard chose to do that? Meanwhile, she found ways to avoid the activity. If a suspect ran, she set Terry free. Thinking of that, her new partner better be a runner too because she wasn’t taking it up anytime soon.

Tears stung her eyes as she nodded to everyone, and the wedding party got into position. Chelsea and Marc stood side by side in front of the doors. Cynthia and Nick were behind them. Terry hit the music, and he and Lou each got a door. As Madison watched the couples disappear, her nerves had her heart pounding. Not long from now, she’d be saying “I do.” A cold sweat blanketed her arms. Her father smiled at her as he held out his arm, and she slipped hers through. Brie, her niece, was in front of them and turned around. “Now?” “Yes.” Madison smiled at her. They’d had a rehearsal last night, but Brie’s nerves must have been getting to her too. “Okay.” Brie grinned and disappeared through the French doors into the living room.

Seconds later, the music was changed to the “Bridal Chorus,” and Madison’s mouth went dry, her head faint. “You’re up,” Terry whispered to her. No turning back, Knight. Deep, slow, steady breaths… Deliberate, conscious breathing, just like her therapist would recommend. Madison and her father paused in the doorway. Brie had done a great job of sprinkling rose petals onto the long runner ahead of them. The room also looked incredible, with ribbons and bows on the chairs and the large urns full of flowers. She made these observations quickly before her gaze went to Troy at the other end of the room. Locked on him, her chest heaved, her lungs froze mid-inhale, and her legs weakened as if made of jelly. Maybe if she focused on the sea of familiar friendly faces of those nearest and dearest to her and Troy, she’d regain her strength. They were standing with their eyes on Madison. Terry’s wife, Annabelle, and their infant daughter, Danny; Chelsea’s husband and her two other daughters; Officer Higgins aka Chief, Madison’s training officer and someone she highly respected; Joni Weir and her girls, Troy’s goddaughters; Cole Richards, the area’s medical examiner, and his wife; Jennifer Adams, Samantha Reid, and Mark Andrews from the crime lab, who worked with and reported to Cynthia; Andrea Fletcher, who was Troy’s sister and the Stiles PD police chief, and her husband, Robert. Absent from Troy’s side were his parents, who had died years before he and Madison had started dating. As Madison approached the front of the room, she couldn’t avoid Troy any longer.

Seeing him made her breath catch again. His broad shoulders filled out a tux to perfection. His blond hair was trimmed short, and his green eyes were electric and piercing. Her father put her hand in Troy’s and kissed her cheek before taking a seat by her mother. Troy was smiling, an expression he rarely showcased, and her heart was at risk of beating out of her chest. He was so much more than the spectacle before her. His character and personality completed the package, and he was all hers. This man wants to marry me, accepting all my strengths and faults. How did I get so lucky? She smiled at him as they turned to face David Murphy, who was acting as their wedding officiant. He also worked with Troy in SWAT. His specialty was explosives. David offered her an encouraging smile and said, “Troy and Madison want to welcome you to their home and their wed—”

A commotion of raised voices from the entry interrupted David. One man distinctly called out, “Braybury PD!” Madison spun around as two police officers crashed into the living room and headed right toward her. Terry and Lou were standing there, arms raised in frustration and surrender. Her father stepped into the aisle to play interference and block them from reaching the front of the room. “You need to leave now. You have no business being here.” “You need to get out of our way, sir, or I will be forced to arrest you,” one of the officers said as he and a colleague skirted past her father.

“Excuse me, but what the hell is happening here?” Andrea Fletcher closed the distance to the officers. “I’m Police Chief Fletcher, and I demand an answer.” A man in a suit stepped through the opening of the French doors. He sauntered toward Andrea and stopped mere inches in front of her. He was looking past her to Troy when he said, “Troy Matthews, you’re going to go with these fine officers.” “Who are you?” Andrea spat. The man held up a gold badge. “Detective Snow, Braybury PD.” Braybury was a large city a couple of hours away from Stiles. Madison turned to Troy when he put a hand on her lower back. “What’s going on?” she asked him...

~~~
When you are dedicated to your job, fighting crime, you often get in trouble with the wrong people... Both Madison and her fiance were not only dedicated, but good at their jobs! It had happened often...But surely, they could have at least waited until after the wedding was over and Madison was finally married to the man with whom she hoped to spend the rest of her life.
But, you know folks, what we often want and need is just not strong enough to prevent the evil people of the world from acting... This time, everybody there was fairly certain that somebody within their police unit had purposely allowed police from a different area to interrupt a wedding ceremony, knowing the upheaval that it would lead to... But that was to be dealt with later. In the meantime, the groom was handcuffed and led away from the bride as she and the entire wedding party stared in horror!
Now here's the thrust of the plot... Madison knows nothing, but is fairly certain that Troy, her lover, is at least aware of what had occurred within the past 24 hours... However, Madison is a tenacious investigator, aside from her deep love for Troy, and she would be sure to start that investigation just as soon as she can get out of her wedding gown!
But she was stopped just as quickly by her boss, who had just as much reason to be concerned with clearing Troy... Andrea Fletcher was Police Chief, their boss...but also sister of Troy... Carolyn Arnold is known for her police procedure expertise in writing her books, but, of the books I've read, so far, this novel is the best of the best in exploiting the police theme: Two different cities, two different chiefs, and jurisdiction becomes so entangled, some readers, including Madison and me, want to scream! LOL Seriously, This story, leading with love and romance, then led to secrets for both of the wedding couple, which led to a murder mystery x 2 which led to a cold case decades ago... get the idea? I loved this one and am happy to suggest that, for Arnold's fans, this is a must-read... And if you haven't read her before, this is a perfect book to begin! Check her name in the search location to the right to find a number of her other books for your consideration...
But let's get back to the story... A young girl was  raped and murdered during a senior graduation party 24 years ago. A boy was found guilty and had served his sentence... It is likely that his return has initiated the actions of the individuals from both police units. But Troy had been involved peripherally in the first murder and is now being seemingly railroaded for both the cold and new murders... But, if that is the case, why won't Troy share what he knows with Madison, especially when they have been betrothed for quite some time... And why are those involved beginning to question who exactly is making the decisions about jurisdiction and access to evidence...
This one has to be read to be believed... It will be worth it to mystery/thriller fans!
On the Count of Three, by Carolyn Arnold - Pre-Order Now for December 4th Delivery!
A true mark of a skilled sociopath was presenting themself as relatable. In this case, a bleeding heart. But Zach noted something else—the familiarity. “He knew about your cousin’s pregnancy and that she’d been expecting a boy?”
She nodded. “I figured maybe he knew her somehow but wanted to keep the money anonymous.”
“Sure.” Paige smiled. “What happened after you took the money?”
“I fanned it. Sniffed it. Like I said, I’d never seen that much money.” Agatha blushed, seemingly embarrassed.
“I looked up to ask his name and thank him, but he was gone.”
“Gone? Just like that?” Zach snapped his fingers.
“Yeah, like an angel.”
More like the Grim Reaper. “I know I did wrong by my cousin, that’s how I sinned, but I had credit card debt. Now I don’t.”
Zach pieced her reaction together. “I can understand it would have been very tempting to take some.”
“I agree,” Paige sympathized. “You have any of the cash left?”
Agatha shook her head.
Zach thought Paige’s question had been a reach. It had been seven years ago! But if they were able to get their hands on even one of the bills, they might have been able to track the serial number. “Did you mention the man to Abigail?” Zach asked, curious if Abigail had withheld that information when they’d spoken to her.
“Not in so many words.” Agatha paused and crossed herself again. “I’m going to Hell. I told her I’d collected the money. Thankfully she didn’t press me on how or I would have had to come up with some story.”
Agatha could work on her morals, but Zach was pretty sure she was telling the truth.
“You’re not going to tell my cousin, are you?” Agatha tugged on Paige’s arm. “Please don’t tell her.”
“We have no reason to, but don’t go anywhere in case we need to talk to you again.” Paige handed Agatha her card. Agatha studied it. “The BAU?” Her brows rose in perfectly shaped arches. “Like from that TV show Criminal Minds?” Her face fell. “Did those guys you showed me kill someone?” She gulped. “Marie Sullivan?”
“We can’t answer that,” Zach replied calmly. Agatha was blinking rapidly and panting lightly. “Am I in danger?”
“We have no reason to believe so.” Paige put a reassuring hand on Agatha’s arm before leaving with Zach.
When they were back at the SUV, Paige grabbed the door handle on the passenger side. “She’s terrified, and I don’t blame her.”
“He won’t be coming for her.” Zach started the SUV. “We know that, but she doesn’t.”
They both strapped in when Zach’s phone rang over the onboard system. He answered, and Jack’s voice came through the speakers. “Get back to the station. The kid and I just brought in Ava Jett and her son.”
“See you in five.”
Zach barely had gotten the words out before the line went dead. He put the SUV into drive, contemplating how the lead they’d received from Agatha would tie into this new twist in the case.
Those who read Carolyn Arnold's book, will undoubtedly think of the television program, Criminal Minds, just as one of the characters did when being interviewed. On the other hand, none of the characters in Arnold's book reminded me of any characters on the show, except Zach, who was also a genius in On the Count of Three. But that wasn't the reason, I hooked on to him. Zach is perhaps the main BAU character in this latest book. His story is carried throughout the book and the climax could not have been better written!
via GIPHY
After working in BAU and seeing the constant danger, Zach had long ago pledged to himself that if he got married, he would leave this type of work. Now, he was not only married, but he had just learned he was going to be a father! He hadn't talked about his earlier pledge to anybody, even his wife; however, their present case was so horrendous, that Zach, now considering their child, began seriously...to consider...and worry... His BAU partner could tell something was wrong, and Zach finally started to talk to her, trusting her to not share what they said with others...
The case, itself, is indeed one of the worst types of death--beheadings! But what was strange about it as the investigation proceeded was that victims were found to have been released from prison after having killed people while driving while drunk... In a recent book, Intoxication Nation, I learned just how prevalent this type of domestic terrorist, as declared by author Guy Graybill is...causing more deaths annually...all due to somebody's choice to drive while drunk...
Apparently, this serial killer had decided that a short jail term was not enough to pay for the deaths of those who had been killed...
As always, Arnold provides readers with the best coverage of investigations, while giving us a chance to explore the whodunit...and, especially, the WHY that so many of us crave to know more about.
Having the series main character, not be the leader of the unit, is a twist that is both intriguing but frustrating... We watch Brandon Fisher and hear his internal thoughts as he deals with the remainder of the people on the team. Apparently, he is insecure in his relation to the team leader and, when in this story, an old friend of his boss, calls and asks them to come to help with a case, he is shocked when he immediately responds. The competition between the two added another dimension to the already intense search for the killer. It was somewhat distracting for me until later when they are forced to work together... The subplot wasn't necessary, but did expand the tension and frustration as the latest victim, if the same MO as was done earlier, meant that the latest woman might still be alive...
Because of the gory details, this wasn't my favorite by this author; however, I am a fan of her police procedural skills, which excel in this and every book. In fact, while working on my review, I did pick out something that sounded more of interest...I love "lost treasure" stories, so be watching for my review of The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh!
So, as I earlier mentioned, the climatic ending of the book is truly worth the reading... So series fans will discover that one member is leaving, thus the spotlight, while another is probably going to be added - yes, the new competitor for Brandon Fisher. I don't think that is too much of a giveaway... But I did enjoy the part Zach played in this book and loved thinking about Matthew Gray Gubler, who plays Stephen Reid on Criminal Minds in the part "when the movie comes..." LOL
It takes a special type of individual to be willing to deal with the dreadful crimes that happen and learning enough to be able to profile these dangerous individuals. Honoring those who actually do that work is important! Right now we are dealing with bombs being sent to major political and related individuals. Profiling is definitely a part of the intensive investigation now going on in the United States...with every level of police involved! A special thank-you for all that are involved in trying to keep America safe!
Do check this next-in-series out or you can pre-order if you are already a series fan...but, as the author always points out, each book is free-standing. So, pick up a book from her large library of options...and Enjoy!
Remnants, A Brandon Fisher Novel, by Carolyn Arnold Out April 11th!
PERIMETER MALL, ATLANTA, GEORGIA
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 11: 30 AM EASTERN
THE TIME HAD COME TO select his next victim. He had to choose carefully and perfectly— he wouldn’t get a second chance. The mall was teeming with life, and that made for a lot of eyeballs, a lot of potential witnesses. But he supposed it also helped him be more inconspicuous. People were hustling through the shopping center, interested solely in their own agendas. They wouldn’t be paying him— or what he was doing— much attention. He was standing at the edge of the food court next to the hallway leading to the restrooms eating a gyro. The lidded and oversized garbage bin on wheels that was behind him would ensure that anyone who did notice him would just think he was a mall janitor on his lunch break. The pitchy voice of a girl about eight hit his ears. “Daddy, I want ice cream.” Trailing not far behind her were a man and woman holding hands. The woman was fit and blond, but his attention was on the man beside her. He was in his twenties, easily six feet tall with a solid, athletic build. He’d be strong and put up a fight. Yes, this was the one. And talk about ideal placement— he was across from the Dairy Queen. He wiped his palms on his coveralls and took a few deep breaths. What he was about to do wasn’t because of who he was, but rather, because he had to do it...
He put up a sign that said it was closed for cleaning and entered, positioning himself next to the door. From there, he could see his target at one of the urinals and another man washing his hands at the sink. Otherwise, it was quiet. Just as if it was meant to be…
The stranger left the restroom without a passing glance. This left him alone with his target. He twisted the lock on the door and then moved behind the man, who paid him no mind.
He took the needle out of his pocket and plunged it into the man’s neck.
The man snapped a hand over where he’d been poked. “Hey!”
Remnants:
The Brandon Fisher FBI Series
By Carolyn Arnold
Arnold is one of those author's whose series I would follow if I were not involved with book reviews and blogging. So I've missed a couple of books in this series, but this is definitely a stand-alone crime novel and I can say immediately that I recommend it for your consideration!
On the other hand, Brandon Fisher, the main character, seems to be in a very confusing period in his love life... It seems to me that individuals in our country's protection services has a hard time with their personal relations. It's sad, but it certainly is understandable. Take for instance, when a major case breaks wide open and agents are called to respond immediately. And the day just happens to be Valentine's day! There were at least two of Fisher's team who got in trouble when they couldn't make the planned events...
Have to say, however, that when somebody is called to a scene where they have found human bones, it does tend to place that assumed murder scene as a top priority... But this isn't just a crime scene...
The bones are from different bodies...
And even that is not the outstanding part of the investigation, because it gets more complicated, more weird, and more surprising as the FBI team and local police strive to build their investigation around just a few bones, to begin...
While Arnold writes in different genres, it is well-known that she is an expert in writing police-procedural novels. This is no exception and due to the complexity of the evil acts that are occurring, the need for meticulous, detailed activities are a must. So even while readers are gathering details along the investigation, I have to admit that I hadn't a clue about who was doing what!
And there's a reason for that... the clever manipulation of the author's mind in setting up the story is incredible. Indeed I hope that no real criminal out there is capable of putting together a plot that is so unbreakable that readers must wait until the end to even get an inkling of what is actually going on! Kudos to Carolyn Arnold! Nothing I like more than a book that keeps me in suspense through page after page...
Because of this, however, I find no real way to share much about the story, other than to say that once the bones begin to be found, more and more are discovered, until, toward the end, entire bodies are displayed. They have been mutilated, skinned, with some parts of the body retained. There seems to be some type of ritual, and fortunately Fisher's team has a member with a mind for details and he begins putting clues together to assist in forming a profile... But that profile doesn't really fit with all other clues... I told you this was a difficult one!
The psychological suspense is deep...and...wide in this story. Sure you may think you have a psychopath out there somewhere... But the who, what, where, and why are the key elements that cannot be explained. And what readers discover at the end is outrageous, overwhelming, and downright haunting... Whew! The only thing that keeps this from being a horror novel is that readers are so involved in trying to solve the case along the way to really begin to grasp the hidden horror story behind the scenes...
Arnold has outdone herself in this novel; she has placed readers behind the yellow crime scene tape; placed a badge on our chests, and begs us to see if we can unravel the mystery that she has created within what many will think is a routine crime procedural case... NOT! If you enjoy thrillers, mysteries, suspense, as well as police procedural stories, then you just must check this out. You might be as stunned as I was in this surprisingly almost unbelievable tale of...human depravity...
Shopping is Murder According to Carolyn Arnold in her McKinley Mystery Series!
SARA LOVED THE HOLIDAYS, BUT she was one “Silent Night” away from running out of the mall in search of a glass of cognac. She glanced over at Sean. He was weighed down with their spoils and trailed along beside her—bags over both shoulders, boxes perched precariously under his arms. The odd capture of his facial expression, including the pressed-on smile, made it clear that he was beyond ready to call it a day. He was pushing through for her.
Maybe it wouldn’t have been such a bad idea to forego the deals of Black Friday. After all, it’s not like money was a concern. Sean had tried to reason with her about the crowds, but she refused to listen. He even suggested hiring someone to take care of the shopping. She hadn’t considered his suggestion, opting for the personal touch of buying the gifts for family and friends themselves. “That’s not something you delegate.” The statement was meant in sincerity—at the time. Now she was asking herself what she’d been thinking, and it was obvious she hadn’t been.
“Just one more stop, darling,” she said in an effort to reassure him the retail torture was almost over.
 “Isn’t that what you said a few ago now?”
 “I know, darling, but it’s important to me.”
She led him into a lingerie shop. “And to think, I was going to say one more store, I might kill myself.”
He smiled at her as she dropped the packages she carried and reached for a silk number on a storefront display rack. Sara let the strap of the negligee slip from her fingers. “You would think, of all places, you’d be happy in here.”
“That’s why I said I was going to say.” He came up close behind her, his warm breath cascading across her neck. “Why are we doing all of this today anyway? We’ve been at it for hours already.”
“I just want to get everything in one swoop.”
 “Everything?”
She nodded.
“Christmas gifts for your family, our friends at PD, Jimmy, Adam. You plan on buying for everyone today?” He adjusted the bags he held.
 “Don’t forget the new friends we met in Europe.”
“Ah, yes, how could I forget Leo and Valerie?”
“And Pierre.” She offered a smile.
“Of course.” Leo and Valerie ran a bed and breakfast in France called La Villa Château. They’d met them on a day trip into the countryside, when they’d happened into the quaint B&B. Pierre was the couple’s quirky friend who had shown up years ago and never left. They had ended up hiring him and never looked back. He was an excellent chef and had proven to be a tremendous asset to their marketing campaign. Pierre had given Sara recipes and pointers to take back home with her. She had tried a couple, but they never turned out the way they had when she worked by Pierre’s side. She wondered if Sean would dare gift her cooking lessons—she’d never seemed to arrange for any
herself. She smiled over at him.
“What?”
 “It’s just that you’re being so good about all of this.”
He blinked and turned his head to the right, his jaw angled slightly upward. He was trying to hide his guilt, but she could see through it. “Yes, I know you’ve been whining.”
 “Me? Whining? No—”
Horrific screams reached into the store, drowning out the holiday merriment spreading over the speakers. Sara raced out of the store, knowing from her days as a cop they could only mean one thing—someone was dead.
Shopping is Murder:
A McKinley Mystery
By Carolyn Arnold
Although I'm not totally a Bah-Humbug type of person, nothing could make shopping exciting for me...unless it happened during a great murder mystery... And author Carolyn Arnold has done just that. So grab a cup of hot chocolate, sit and read instead of hustling and bustling through the crowded mall at Christmas, and find the hidden clues that can lead us to the murderer! No luck for me this time, although I got close! I love it when the mystery is too hard for me to solve before the end of the book, don't you?!
The two main characters of the series is a husband-wife team that, due to their
work to help others, had become unexpectedly wealthy. They had just returned home and were out shopping for Christmas when screams were heard. Instantly, Sara's instincts as a former cop, came alive and she raced out of the store to discover what was happening...
SEAN FOLLOWED SARA IN THE direction of the shrill cries. She had left all her bags behind, and he had done the same, letting them fall to the floor of the lingerie store before scampering to catch up.
The second floor of the mall was crowded with shoppers—people of all sizes, ages, and genders—but  instead of making a beeline for the next store, they had all come to a standstill alongside the railing. A middle-aged woman turned around, covering her mouth. Her eyes were watery, but her pallor threatened more than distress. She was going to be sick. Sean brushed a few people aside to make room for her to pass through. She gave him a silent thank you, reflected in her irises. There was a desperation to her aura. She didn’t have any time to spend on pleasantries.
Sean watched after her for a second, and in that amount of time the small opening in the crowd had been swallowed whole. There had to be at least ten to fifteen people between him and the railing. He already had a good idea as to what happened. He surveyed the crowd and located Sara. She was worming her way through the mass of people toward the banister. It was as if she were being pulled by a force greater than herself.
She expertly maneuvered, side-stepping left or right as need be. He hurried to make his way to her, but there was no getting through—elbows halted his attempts to make headway.
Sara’s heart hammered in her chest. She knew what she would face once she reached the railing, but something from within propelled her forward with a burst of desperation. There was no logical explanation for it, but sometimes reasoning was easy to discredit. This was one of those times.
What she hadn’t expected was to see
her childhood friend Nicole Hill
 and screaming,
 “That’s my husband.”
Carolyn Arnold is known as the author who writes police procedurals respected by Law Enforcement. You can be sure that the rigors of her murder investigations are complete, meticulous, and representative of what happens in reality. So do plan on getting your thinking cap on as the investigation begins..
Because in this mystery, the victim's wife is a long-ago friend of Sara's and there is no way that she was not going to try to help ease the pain of loss for her...
As soon as Sean saw her, he knew that something more was wrong than an accident. A man had gone over the railing and fallen to the main Mall floor! He learned that Nicole Hill had been a childhood friend--a very close friend even though they'd had no contact for years.
All it took was Sara and Nicole to come together and their relationship was once again remembered, and warm... but by the time they had got together later, an old argument and a bad relationship with Nicole's mother raised it's ugly head...
But nothing was going to stop Sara from getting involved, once she'd been asked... and they quickly discovered a witness who had seen the man...and he had been near the railing over which he had fallen...to death...
“Wow.” Geoffrey massaged his chin and then lowered his hand. “I’d love to help if I could, but I’m afraid I’ve told you everything I know. The guy said he’d had enough of shopping and was ready to jump. That’s all. Sorry.”
“About how long from the time he said that until he went over?” Sean asked.
“Maybe thirty minutes...
His mouth opened and closed as if he were debating whether or not to continue. “When he said it, he was dangling over the railing.”
“He was dangling?”
“He was leaning on the railing and holding onto a small yellow bag that he was swaying back and forth.”
“A yellow bag?” Sean leaned forward. She didn’t remember seeing a yellow bag on the ground around him.
“Yes, and like I said, it was small, say—” he gestured with his hands creating an approximate twelve-inch rectangle, “about this big.”
Sara rose to her feet, keeping her eyes on the man. “Was there a name or logo on it?”
Geoffrey shook his head. “Just plain.”
“Thank you for your help. We won’t take up any more of your time.”
Sean followed her lead and waited until they had reached the car to question her. “What is it? What are you thinking?”
 “I believe our answer lies in that yellow bag.” There was that downward tug on her gut. He opened the door for her. “But you’re not happy about it.” She shook her head and got in. She continued once he was behind the wheel. “You know my memory. Jerrod didn’t fall with a yellow bag.”
 “Are you sure? Maybe you just don’t remember seeing it—”
She held eye contact with him.
“Yeah, sorry, it’s you we’re talking about.”
She smiled and then laughed. “Remember that.”
Got to tell you readers that this is the perfect mystery to sink into and get away from the stress of shopping and the other holiday season activities! There are enough clues to keep you interested, along with the details of routine procedures that help the story move forward, and still keep you in suspense and turning the pages until the surprising climax occurs... I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it! Arnold is one of my newer favorite authors and I haven't gotten to read as many of her books, but she is definitely an author that is worthy of your consideration.
The author picked this for a Black Friday special which makes the book still available for less than a dollar! I had picked it up quite some time ago and was happy to pull it for a spotlight of Christmas books this month! Do check it out!
Spotlighting Carolyn Arnold's Latest Novel...Deadly Impulse!
Just Stopped by? BRG is spotlighting Carolyn Arnold...
By Carolyn Arnold
#2 EXCERPT FROM DEADLY IMPULSE, Chapter 3:
Chapter 3
Her phone vibrated, notifying her of a text message. It was from Cynthia. Richards booked the autopsy for first thing the next morning. Madison shared this information with Terry, and although he nodded, his eyes seemed distant—a common occurrence these days.
Doctors had told Terry and Annabelle that their baby could be born with spina bifida, but they strived to stay positive.
“Are you thinking about the baby?” Madison asked.
“I’m thinking of him, yes.” He gave her a slick smile. Despite ultrasounds not revealing the baby’s sex, Terry was convinced it was a boy.
“How is Annabelle these days?”
“She’s excited, nervous. She wants him out.” He laughed, but the expression quickly deflated.
“Good. And I bet.” Madison was thirty-five and didn’t have a mothering bone in her body. If she thought pregnancy through to birth—all the bodily fluids and the blood—it made her squeamish and just sealed the fact she would likely never have a family.
“So if you get to ask about my life…” he teased.
“Oh, no, you don’t. My relationship with Matthews is off the table.”
“Matthews? Sounds rather formal and cold.”
Troy Matthews was head of SWAT for Stiles PD. She’d known him for years, but it wasn’t until a recent case that their friendship had turned into something more. Despite her initial resistance, some things cannot be stopped. The draw she had to him was one such thing. He was an alpha male and, as such, attracted women in droves. He was into working out and ripped. But he was serious-minded and interested solely in her—or so he kept trying to convince her.
Madison took a deep breath thinking back to last night—their bodies entangled, moving together… She had to wish the images from her mind. At least for right now. They were on a case.
“I can tell by the flush of your cheeks, things are heating up.”
“Oh, shut up.” She punched him in the shoulder and then smirked. Her relationship with Terry would never change. He was like the younger brother she’d never had.
“By the way, you’re looking good these days,” he added.
She narrowed her eyes, tempted to punch him again.
“What?” He lifted his shoulders, hands palms out toward her. “I just noticed. I thought women liked this type of acknowledgment.”
But she wasn’t “most women.” She wasn’t worried about what men thought of her. After being betrayed by her fiancĂ© in her early twenties, she’d been somewhat bitter for the better part of a decade now. It didn’t help that he—Toby Sovereign—was also a detective and currently working with Stiles PD. The greatest tragedy was how she held what he had done to her against all men who had entered her life—up until now. She still dated, of course, but she never allowed anyone to get too close. No, her heart was hers and hers alone. With that state of mind, though, the loneliness was also hers alone. She had both Cynthia and Terry to thank for helping her to see that life was too short to sit around and mope. Even Troy deserved some of the credit.
“You must be working out,” Terry said, breaking her train of thought. “Does Troy have you on a program?” Terry snickered, evidently amused with his innuendo.
“Would you just—”
The elevator dinged, interrupting as it announced their arrival on the second floor.
She stepped out first. Not that she’d admit it to Terry, master of the treadmill, who ran ten miles every morning, but she was exercising. And eating healthier. Before her shifts, she’d walk Hershey, her chocolate lab, at a brisk pace for an hour. Thanks to the obedience classes she was able to fit in every other Saturday, he was a pleasure to walk. She had started with one block and kept building herself up.
She hated to concede that the new lifestyle had anything to do with Matthews—Troy. She still slipped sometimes, but it was beginning to get easier to refer to him by first name. She was doomed. Whenever she sensed the trepidation setting in, the hesitancy over accepting their relationship, she’d blurt out Matthews to establish focus again.
But life had taken her through a lot in recent months. She had almost died at the hands of the Russian Mafia and came close to being raped by one of them, too. Faced with the muzzle of a revolver to her head, she had promised herself that she would forgive past hurts and try to love again with a full heart. The latter was really tough. It equated to vulnerability, the very thing she always did her best to avoid.
#3 EXCERPT FROM DEADLY IMPULSE, Chapter 9:
Chapter 9
I CAN’T MOVE MY WRISTS. The smell of blood is up my nose, in my mouth. The shadows looming in the corners shift and transform.
Anatolli emerges, holding a revolver.
My heart is beating like a piston, and my breath is labored as I struggle against the restraints.
He’s coming closer and there’s nothing I can do.
My head is locked in place, the clasp around my neck limiting my range of motion.
He’s pulling on my hair, yanking it so hard my vision goes to pinpricks of red with flashes of white.
“You are going to die.” His spittle mists my face, and he lowers to look me in the eye. But it is no longer Anatolli. It’s Constantine.
Madison jolted awake and bounded from her bed. Hershey let out a startled bark. He must have been dreaming, too. Madison hoped he’d been running through a field or eating a bone—something peaceful.
“Sorry, buddy.”
Hershey stretched out, worming his way to the edge of the mattress.
She rubbed his fur, waiting for her heartbeat to calm down. “It was a nightmare, that’s all.”
Was that all? It was so vivid. Her visceral reactions to the images were so real. She knew these men were dead, but Constantine was still alive, out there somewhere. And the simple fact remained that she had upset the Russians and there would be consequences.
Really, it was surprising that they had let her live as long as they had. Dimitre Petrov must have derived more pleasure from toying with and manipulating her than killing her.
She sat down on her bed, reality hitting her. The Russians would have tired of playing games. When they came for her next, they would be coming to kill her. Oddly, she found herself hoping they’d torture her first so she could find a window to escape. And if she got the chance, she’d shoot to kill this time.
Her breathing slowed. But would that be enough? The Russians would just substitute Constantine’s face for that of another hired killer—plenty volunteered their services for blood money.
And while Constantine was likely out of the country, this left her with another ally of the Russians—the former police chief, Patrick McAlexandar. The fact that he had relinquished his post at the police department and was staying out of the media spotlight these days did little to change her opinion of his guilt.
