A. J. Tata Rips From the News What Could Happen Soon! Dark Winter Now Out!



It was December, 2008, when I announced a new book and author, A. J. Tata with the Threat Series...  It was April, 2015, when Jake Mahegan was introduced in Foreign and Domestic! Now ten years later, he is one of the top thriller writers in America... There's a reason! And all you have to do is read one of his books to understand why...

Jake Mahegan is a formidable character that is exciting, comfortable in command and brilliant in strategy... But, in this latest novel, we see another side of him. He has fallen in love... ...Gorham didn’t want to focus solely on dominance of the social and commercial world; he wanted political power. He had read Von Clausewitz’ On War and knew that military action was simply politics by another means. 
Given the state of the world today, Gorham knew that the deep political divisions in the United States and around the globe made the world ripe for a hostile takeover. 
“Boss I’m talking to you,” Shayne said. 
“Yes?” 
“You’re sure you want to launch the nuke? It’s your one freebie,” Shayne said. 
“Yes. North Korea strikes Japan with a nuke. World’s third largest economy. An extension of the United States for all practical purposes. 
The digital trails we’ve left for Assange and his lackeys to sniff around show Russia and Iran in full support of the North Korean weapons program and the launch. And you’ve got the follow up congrats e-mails ready for AUTO SEND from Iran and Russia to the acting North Korean president, correct?” 
“Yes,” Shayne muttered. 
“Okay, then. For the third time, execute,” Gorham said in an even tone. 
Shayne eyed him a second and then said, “You’re the boss.” His fingers rattled across the keyboard sounding like a thousand beetles on concrete and he hit ENTER. He panned the ManaSat camera over the Sangnam-Ri underground missile base, the location of many ICBM test flights. Two silos opened. They were maybe one-half mile apart. The openings looked like black dots on the satellite feed...
“THAAD defenses?” 
“Should be mitigated. 
ManaWorm showing activated and effective against American THAAD.” Shayne had developed the remote access Trojan, ManaWorm, so that they could plant the virus on unsuspecting defense contractor weapons and equipment a year or two earlier, when Gorham had hatched his plan. “Shadow missile effective?”
“So far. Looks like one launch. If we’re lucky, the Americans will think it’s just another ICBM tested and not even try to deploy THAAD.”
...“And,” Gorham said with dramatic flair, “we have the third nuclear weapon ever dropped in wartime and it is once again on Japanese soil. How ironic.”

The book description and additional publicity on Dark Winter left me with feelings of trepidation... Knowing the experience and expertise of A. J. Tata, I knew that this book was going to be as realistic as it could be, essentially responding to the question, "What If?"

Considering the state of the world today, with the division within the United States, one man could conduct a world-wide hostile takeover...and Gorham had been preparing for it for years... The first attack had been the assassination of the ruler of North Korea...

Of course, the hostility had been sparked quickly when the United States had withdrawn from the Iran Deal. It was also placing pressure on North Korea to completely eliminate their nuclear arsenal...and, with up-and-down pressure on Russia, who was already using cyberwar to work against the United States,  the time to act was now! Gorham and his staff had been working deep in the Dark Web to contact countries with whom he was negotiating... Responding to each of their known hatred and desires, the three countries with whom the U.S. had played with, had formed together into RINK... The target was to totally destroy America...

Each of the countries would be targeting nearby areas and moving into offensive position to overcome and destroy... Russia was also aiming for the total destruction of the United States, with their large arsenal of nuclear armaments.

It was to be a war of cyber action in the beginning. Through various contracts with the government across the world, weapons had been "changed" slightly from specifications, so that when put into action they would not make contact with proposed targets! It had begun with the bomb strike on Japan by the North Koreans and then ground military action by all three countries all at once. The ComWar had control of all types of equipment that was computer controlled and had weighted the three countries, Russia, Iran, and North Korea so that their military equipment were all efficiently working!

World War III was in its early stages...

If only Jake Mahegan was Real! But, of course, he is, in many ways. Tata writes based upon having seen the bravery, the expertise, and the patriotism of many American soldiers and he has forged their skills in our hero Jake...

But, something has changed in Jake's life...Cassie, a member of his team, who has the credentials, experience and expertise to have earned the Captain rank and who works at the side of Jake, had found her way into Jake's heart and, after never being in love before, has fallen deeply. It is somewhat of a burden, because he can no longer see her as a teammate...rather Jake needs to protect her...

Cassie is perfect for Jake! She's not willing to have Jake move her out of her team position, does not want to be protected, rather to allow her to act as normal in doing what she needs to do. But, the link between the two adds an extra dimension to the thriller that represents the love each soldier has for their loved ones and for their country. They love both, but will do anything to protect and serve those loved ones.

The lack of attention to cyber security for the last few years, as elections and social networks have been hacked with false information or used to hack election machines, while little has been done to lead and prepare for the use of computer manipulation, has been, illustratively, shown just how vulnerable the United States has become related to security...security of the infrastructure, not just on bigger and better ground and air equipment. Having worked with computer systems throughout my professional career, I am constantly alert to just how bad things can get if computer systems are affected in even small ways. The technological aspects of this book are beyond my expertise to actually do, but certainly the book is brilliantly done to show exactly how bad it can get! And a bit of coordinated criminal intent cannot easily be thwarted.

Tata presents us with an awesome, and, yes, terrifying, option of what can occur when criminal intent is allowed to take control. This is well beyond twists and turns...it is upfront action-packed, minute-by-minute intense waiting and moving. Picking up detail after detail to determine what may occur next. The characters are unbelievably able to get under our skin. I envisioned the villain as a evil genius whose ego has surmounted his ability to apply any level of common sense... While Jake Mahegan, our hero, seems to magically know who to trust, and not trust, and still make things happen to slow down and/or stop what is happening. It's a deadly time frame, and readers feel the tension, the sweat, the fear, as characters make things happen "just in time." Edgy, nail-biting, and hope and prayers are part of the move toward the climatic ending...

When I read this latest book of General Tata, and knowing he is already involved to some extent in government issues, I can't help but hope that he will enter the political realm and use his expertise to actually stop that potential WWIII that he has written about in Dark Winter. We have to deal with the violent terrorism that is rampant, as another mass shooting took place this very morning... Readers, if you don't understand about computer usage in relation to military safety and security, you must read this book! Learn what you need to know about cyber acts that can take us into a war like no other.

Sure it's exciting and those who like military thrillers are bound to enjoy the book. I loved it for putting the newspaper headlines directly into a book like no other could to describe the turmoil and world-wide concerns we already know exists today... Has RINK already been formed???

A New Hero! Meet Jake Mahegan in Foreign and Domestic by A. J. Tata! Top Personal Favorite for 2015!




Move over Talanov {and James Houston Turner} I've found a new hero! With the first book, I'm ready for the movie! And I've already picked the perfect main character to play Chayton Mahegan--Adam Beach! Only one slight problem in the selection, the character is written as a blond--but he's also Native American...Still, there are some things I'm willing to improvise on given the options (couldn't find any pics of blonds, even though I did verify there were some for Native Americans... Still, should we really pass up...this proven hero??? Actually, when I remembered he was also in Windtalkers, and many more movies, well, he seemed the perfect hero for me to admire!
  What do you say readers?

OMG Readers, I am so blown away by this new book by well-loved author A. J. Tata. I was reading him from the very first book and loved every one of them. But I got so excited about this book, I even stopped shortly into the chapters and wrote the author that I was loving it! Never did that before! Just had to add it to this year's personal favorites! And check out the links to his other books provided at the end of the review...

Mahegan nodded, recalling how the Army psychiatrist had identified Mahegan's sometimes "impulsive, aggressive behavior," and recommended against inclusion in the elite force. Savage had stood firm and the "million-dollar man" was born. Oddly, Delta Force had been Mahegan's home, and he had left all that he loved.
"I just need time, sir," he told Savage, "Then, maybe I can do what you suggest."
Now, this morning, pulling hard through the black water, he wondered whether or not he should have accepted Savage's deal. The general had been right. Someone was looking for him and General Bream was gunning for a dishonorable discharge. He tried to push the black pickup truck and the Inspector General out of his mind.
His broad shoulders and powerful legs propelled him through the sound. After a shark incident while swimming off Wilmington's fabled Frying Pan Shoals, Mahegan was deterined to appear dominant in the water. He swam with purpose, as if he were the apex predator, some kind of savage beast on the prowl.
His mind drifted from Colgate to The American Taliban, Mullah Adham to his shoulder and to Martin Strel, who owned the world record for the longest continuous swim. Before beginning his swimming rehab, Mahegan had researched the sport. Strel swam 312 miles in the Danube River in 84 hours. Mahegan did the math. He was doing 5 miles max each way. Strel had cruised at a sustained rate of 3.7 miles an hour. Mahegan w3as doing something less than that, but not by much. Plus, Strel had a helping current while he was going cross-current. The tide was either coming in or going out, which was always perpendicular to his acts of advance. Mahegan knew he was doing the miles all at once, of course.
He swam that way for an hour and a half until, on a downward stroke, his hand hit sand,
touching the small beach of the mainland of North Carolina. He pulled himself up, strode through the knee-deep water, and sat on the jutting spit of land that was the easternmost point of the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.
He sat about twenty meters back from the water, facing east, and watched the dawn appear over the Atlantic Ocean, Outer Banks barrier islands, and roanoke Island. The sun cast an orange streak along the spreading vee of his swimming wake. The water rippled outward inviting the coming day. The vee eventually disappeared and he wondered about his life path. What was left in his wake so far? What more would there be? Would his trail simply blend back into the environment with no remaining signature?
As Mahegan stared at his diminishing path, he felt welcoming eyes surround him from behind. He smiled. They had learned to come to him, or perhaps he to them. The red wolves crept from their Alligator River Refuge and joined Mahegan as he watched the sun and wondered about life. Mahegan had researched the terraine of Dare County Mainland, and among other valuable lessons, he learned that at one time there had been only sixteen red wolves left in the United States. The National Wildlife Refuge had tried an experimental repopulation program by placing a few of the sixteen in the Alligator River National Park. Fierce hunters, the red wolves began to thrive on the abundant wildlife in the remote national park... Mahegan felt a comfort here, removed from even the sparsely populated Roanoke Island. Drifting up the Outer Bank of North Carolina for a year, he had worked the odd job for a couple of weeks before moving on...But a year was enough. The one-year anniversary of his failed mission in Nuristan Province was tomorrow and he was at the end of this particular trail. Plus they had found him. He needed solitude to finalize his plans. Today.

It had begun at his last military action. He had already lost many of his men and then, when his best friend, Colgate, was gone, Jake reacted. He had killed the target who was the reason they were there in the first place. When he got back, his remaining soldiers as well as his senior officer had supported it as a righteous shoot... but he had decided to retire from service, against the wishes of Savage, who knew what he had in the man who had been called the "million-dollar man" by many.
He had been out, keeping a low profile, moving from one place to another trading work for what he needed, a place to sleep and something to eat. He had been in North Carolina for about a year and had been working back to his top shape after his injuries, by swimming about 5 miles a day...

He was, at that time, unaware of those who had been watching him...

The first had been several  who had been at the site when Colgate was killed...

The second had been watching as he'd swum every day, sometimes even following him...

But his name had been spreading and, there in Dare County, it all came together and results in so much action that every page brings new dangers, new places...and death... Readers! Get prepared for the Ride of your Life! It may be a book, but if you follow the lead, just hang on... Jake Mahegan's got your back!

 It all starts by Jake recovering a dead body that he'd bumped into while swimming...and bringing it back! No good deed goes unpunished, right? He was immediately arrested as the probable killer...Duh...

Fortunately, there was a young woman there who stated that she'd seen him swimming and finding the body...yes...his stalker! Who happens to be deputized by the County Sheriff, who is quickly brought in and takes control...at least on her behalf...LOL, because she's got a number of ideas for Jake, you might say... And she "seems" to be on the good side, although Jack openly admits he's not sure yet... And then there's "The American Taliban" who, while attacking military sites, uses Jake's name, telling the world, he is someone who's involved...
Jake had no idea why since he'd never met him!

 Actually, there are many who want Jake dead, especially after he starts disrupting the many different, and simultaneous, activities being conducted by those seeking power and money--gold in this particular case!

 Readers, there are so many cons and scams going on that they boggle the imagination. Anywhere an evil man lives, there he finds a way to make that work for him! And it reaches high into the military ranks as well as into powerful corporations...

 I was particularly struck by the methods of electronics/computerization in making everything work for the criminals. Fortunately, Jack knew enough to fight fire with fire, even on a military bomb testing site which was now being cleaned out of...bombs that had not yet gone off... and into the deep oceans where he alone tangles with 3 different ships who are in the midst of trafficking of...just about everything...including ghosts! This latter issue was extremely disturbing to me and I'm hoping it was fictionally creative rather than based upon actual knowledge and experience of the author... although I doubt it, given today's world activities!

 Who, by the way, is a retired Brigadier General, combat veteran and paratrooper... Anybody who wants the real deal in military thrillers, only has to pick one writer to be sure he knows the writing, adventure, and thrilling exercises are based upon superior knowledge in military tactics! You're right, I don't know them, but I can tell when a writer writes from knowledge and experience! Tata is the best that I've read for this genre!

 Included in the book is historical information on Native Americans, the Lost Colony, Virginia Dare, from North Carolina... And all of it written seamlessly into the overall story, with no down time for readers in their page-turning hours with this one book. Tata has written what may be his giant step as a major military thriller writer!

 This is a favorite author, and his books are must-reads for me... Surely, you've got to check him out!

When you choose to read The Threat Series by General A. J. Tata, you will know that the "alternative future" he presents for your thriller enjoyment is based upon his personal experience, analysis and knowledge of the world we live in...Today! The three major issues he covers in this fantastic novel are: Racial Tensions, Religious Doctrine, and Media Manipulation and Dissemination--Disinformation...

Mortal Threat, however, added another character--the daughter of Zach Garrett, and, for me, it brought the novels even closer to the type of thrillers I enjoy. One with a gutsy, strong, intelligent female character who... just...doesn't...quit! In fact, I'm including a scene that demonstrates exactly what I mean, but one that doesn't give away the thrilling main story...
“Dogs. They will attack us if we don’t move,” Kiram said. He waved his hand at the ridge above them. “Then they follow.” 
Amanda sensed even more that he knew the jungle and he knew combat. The most formative years of a child’s life were between two and seven, Amanda knew, and she had no idea what either of these children had seen or been asked to do at those ages. By their dispositions, she figured they had seen death, and likely had killed as well. Amanda pointed Webb in what she believed to be a southeasterly direction based upon the angle of the diminishing sun to her back. She let Kiram lead on point with Mumbato in the rear. With the sun about to fall on this difficult day, Amanda Garrett silently prayed to God that her father would be able to find her. And that they would be able to save the Nightingale program...
“Miss Amanda,” Kiram said, holding his AK-47 like a soldier might, his trigger finger riding parallel to the magazine, ready to move in a nanosecond to the hair-string trigger.

“Yes, Kiram,” Amanda said stiffly, her small protest against the weapons. She had been on a nonviolence kick for the past five years with the orphanage and thought she was making progress. She was still processing how to react to the availability of the weapons and their obvious need for protection. Practically speaking, she considered, they would be fools to take another step in the darkened gorge without the weapons as they navigated the Serengeti Plain. She knew and had accepted the need for violence and strategy, had even employed it in the past, yet she had been so overwhelmed by the prior brutality visited upon the children she supervised that she’d enacted a no-violence policy in the orphanage. Now she knew her survival depended upon summoning her father’s warrior instincts. “Animals. Serengeti dogs follow. Pack of about fifteen. They started out smaller, maybe seven, but as they watched how slowly we go, they went back for more,” Kiram said. 

Amanda watched her star pupil talk in near fluent English. “These are the wild dogs you have told me about?” she asked. “They’re smart, hungry, and operate in packs, right?”
“True,” Kiram said. “Like I told you at the crash. They follow.” He licked his dry lips. So far they had been simply drinking from the stream that fell across the rocky gulley that fed into the steep gorge. “There are two parts of the pack to our back, and they are guarding our escape from this hole. The other two have moved forward to the mouth, where this valley opens into the bigger valley...”


Quickly, she turned her head when two loud reports echoed over their heads. Mumbato’s gun, she thought. Crouching in a defensive stance, she saw a flash before her eyes and realized that one of the dogs was leaping through the air from the ledge and flying directly at her. She watched the bare teeth and ferocious sneer of the wild animal. Its savage eyes reminded her of a rabid raccoon she had seen as a young child. The dog’s moist breath blasted her face with a morbid scent that hinted of decaying teeth. She instinctively threw her hand in front of her face, and miraculously the dog missed her, going high, over her head. She turned, defensive and ready for a counterattack. The dog skidded on the slick rocks but was able to turn around and spin its claws against the magma outcropping. Lunging toward Amanda, the dog was airborne again, its legs outstretched. Amanda lifted the knife and stepped to the side, pulling the smooth edge upward as if hitting a tennis backhand. The knife sliced through the dog’s throat until it got caught on the left
shoulder bone. She twisted her shoulders, like a golfer’s follow-through, and the knife came free of the dog’s neck. Amanda felt the warm blood ooze across her hands as the animal yelped and snapped. Like a bluefish released from a lure bouncing in the bottom of a boat with barefooted anglers, the wild dog continued to click its teeth, its mouth inching toward Amanda. Reflexively, Amanda drove the knife into the chest cavity of the dog and wrenched it sideways until she could retrieve the blade. The dog convulsed and then lay motionless. 

Kiram came running down the cliff with Mumbato in tow. “Quick, Amanda, the dogs are running away, but Mumbato heard a motor. We must go.” 
Amanda slid the knife across the matted fur of the dog, wiping the blade.
“Now, we must move!” Kiram whispered emphatically.

Most average citizens would be able to identify those threat issues facing America and the world. But when an expert analyzes those issues and pulls them together to create a novel, albeit fiction, you can be sure that it should, in my opinion, be a must-read.  The merge of headline issues added with his personal expertise results in a totally plausible adventure into the "what if" of national and international matters. I started with information on the author to illustrate his involvement--I trust the author and know that he has a very real concern about the United States, no matter his political party, or his religion, which I do not know. That's important to me as I read this Threat Series. If it is to you, as well, Please do check out the entire series!

HIV children
Zach and Matt Garrett, brothers, have been through some rough times, defending their country. Zach's daughter, Amanda, has joined the first in a different fashion. She is studying to become a doctor, but has been working in Africa, assisting in a research project, code named Nightingale... 



It is world-wide health issues that are being addressed by the project... When word leaks out, that there could be a miracle cure for HIV as well as Ebola, that's when those who are hungry for power stepped in... 

Amanda had been working with Dr. King, who did his research in a different location while Amanda lived at the orphanage and clinic and had grown close and loved the children as her own--their safety was her first concern, so that when the trouble started, she took immediate 



action, as earlier been planned, to take the children and escape.



At nineteen years old, Kiram had grown up in the Mwanza orphanage. He had known Amanda since he was fourteen after her first summer volunteering to assist the war orphans like him. 

It was Kiram who worked alongside her, showing him what to do, hoping that one day he would become a doctor, as she also hoped for Mumbato... Since HIV and Ebola surely led to death, it had been decided, with the patients' consent, that it was better to try the new serum, than to just wait to die... It was also Kiram who had first brought her a local ingredient that had been used to heal in the past. It was later that people started to be healed from both HIV and Ebola.

More than one media agency was following the successes of the work at Mwanza. In fact, one of those groups, ISIS, had been watching it so closely, that Al Rhazziq Media not only announced the cure to the world, but had taken credit for it! A friend, Quizmahel, who was already physically near death, had agreed to be martyred for the cause and an arranged assassination took place after the announcement--of course, blaming America... But a rival agency was also involved and both had their representatives out to gain and report constant information and/or gain ownership of the cure, taking whatever way necessary...

And in America, the second African-American president had been elected, who was already designated as a major player in this international game...
He had totally forgotten a new president was being inaugurated today. Jamal Barkum stood before the masses of the Washington, D.C. Mall. Beckwith punched up the volume using the remote. “And I say to all of you that today we march on toward a better destiny. Our footprints are timeless. Thank you and God Bless America.” And suddenly Beckwith thought he understood.

Because by that time, word was spreading about The Book of Catalyst...


Beckwith had studied the Book of J and the Book of E, the Torah, the Bible, the Koran, the Hebrew Tanach, and many other religious texts. What he had learned was that all of the scriptures had been eventually recorded from memory after being passed along by the oral traditions of tribal chiefs or religious scholars. The hierarchy of those who determined the canonization of Biblical texts fascinated him. To him, it seemed that all of the religions essentially agreed on the basic pretexts of a God creating the universe and man. 

It was this particular issue, the creation of man, which had captured Beckwith’s attention. In November 2012, one of his Internet miners had pinged on a secure email from an Al Rhazziq Media server farm in Morocco that had mentioned the location of the Book of Catalyst, a fabled alternative to the Book of Genesis that had been dismissed as fairy tale. However, Beckwith wanted it...

And slowly pieces of the Book started passing hands until word had reached President Barkum...

 This is absolutely the best of the best for the Threat Series! There are three significant issues facing America that were placed into the right settings to allow each reader to see and understand what kind of actions are instigated, then blamed on some other group...and what happens when the disinformation becomes significant in our real decision-making processes. I loved it... Kudos to A. J. Tata for hitting those issues hard...and in such an astute manner to result in an exciting, edge-of-the-seat story! And a surprising, stunning ending!
