THE GATE - This Was The Time For Me To Read This Book...

Sometimes when I'm lost in wondering about the future, I flip through my Kindle to see what I want to read... The Gate by Stan I. S. Law caught my attention, although I have others of his to read. Perhaps, it was a God Incident? For the first time in my life, I have serious health issues that present problems to my daily life...

All I saw was The Gate...and started to read, not knowing what it was about... And I certainly didn't think about THE Gate!

Whoa...I didn't think I was heading to Heaven...yet...but...
just who knows when it's your time..

Na'ah, I didn't think I was heading upward right now...but I am of that age when I do think about dying...And maybe, just maybe you are too. If not, maybe you should be. Because anybody over, say, 40 should already be thinking about some of the things we're going to face... Especially, if you are the child about 40 and your parents are still living...

Mother

Just yesterday he was here.
I looked into his eyes.
He was a man now,
even as once a child that suckled at my breast.
I continue to see him.
Constantly, by my side.
Or could it be just my longing?
Surely he can’t be here.
How come I am granted such wondrous illusions?
 Shadows of memories of such joyful past?
But surely he is here.
And he’ll never leave me.
I feel his gentle touch, passing over my brow…
No matter how spent,
I shall always see him, Hiding behind my eyelids,
days, nights, even now...
~~~
Steven is the main character who supports his mother, and father, through their last days. Stan wrote the book based upon his parents' lives within a fictionalized version to have it emerge into a lovely biographic sketch of his mother. She had started to write or record years before, while her husband was still alive--he was ten years older and had developed early stages of Alzheimer when they decided to move into "The Institute..."
The story is written in such a lovely way. The reader wonders just how much his mother had written before Stan had taken on the task of editing and merging her words with his into a book. Even when he is not sure what was intended, he included her words as part of the manuscript. Such a loving son, he had to have been...
The book is broken down into four parts,  under the umbrella of the Horsemen. As a family, especially with Stan as their son, we would realize that Stan's inquiring mind would constantly be active and most of the book is conversations between he, his wife, and his mother. A note perhaps is needed: music is not part of the book, but it has been added based upon my reading of the story on my blog.
It was for his mother, who had become unable to care for Jan, her husband, that this final change had to be made to relocate to The Institute.  Mostly referred to as Mama, or Mimi by Jan, she was, then, for the most part in good health and able to easily adjust with less physical work to care for Jan.  Steven and Annette made that place as much of a home as possible, including carpet, which was not allowed...but somehow managed to be installed and left to deal with by staff.
Then there are the activities and people within The Institute...not a good place, but not a bad one either. It is the people who populate the home that helps. However, after Jan is gone, Mimi slowly declines as she ages and moves toward dementia... Dementia, she says, is much better than Alzheimer's. Those with dementia realize that it is happening and can learn to compensate for routine things much longer. As we read, as older people, we begin to see those times happening in our own lives. But reading it in one book gives you a total picture of the path taken. Somehow the family takes it a step at a time, a day at a time, and makes the most of life as they begin to talk about The Gate..."
When it begins, the entire section has been done with great sensitivity and love. Mrs. Kordos, Mama, had begun to question... "Why am I here?", "Why am I not with Jan?".
Then the questions and discussion became about why is God who is supposed to be loving leave us here,  alone, to suffer, to become something we are not. Mrs. Kordos is a Catholic, but finds she is not prepared to answer her own questions--they just told us what to do, we did it, and were forgiven... But there was so much more, she realized. She began to read and have discussions with her son and his wife, exploring life itself. Steven indicated we have free will; his mother countered with, then why can't I choose. She contemplated suicide seriously especially after Jan was gone.
All she wanted was answers...
I found what I wanted in this book by Stan I. S. Law. Perhaps I was already prepared for what might be said, what might be the "climax," the "ending." But there was so much more in between the beginning of the book and the ultimate ending...
Many Christian hymns consider death, heaven...with great joy and contentment...
But, in reality, what we find is something not so joyous as we face the physical deterioration of our bodies, and, sometimes, our minds... Steven and Annette and the other family continued to support their mother and grandmother, not being able to respond to her pleas, her questions.
Until they noticed that she was no longer asking...even though years passed...
Mama died smiling...the smile that her family would always remember...
Recommending as a Must-Read.
Weekend Marathon of Reading Mary Metcalfe - Watch for Reviews of Trilogy!
Winds of Change
http://sixestate.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/
xBoston-Marathon-Bombing.jpg
Sadly, this excerpt is no longer true...
"In his hotel room, Ben glanced at the bedside clock, I need
to get my act in gear. He threw back the covers. Finally, I can
check out. He grinned when he realized his his thinking had
changed. Just weeks ago I was beyond grateful to be in a hotel.
I must be ready to settle down if I'm thinking a hotel is boring.
I can't believe I actually want to move into Gord's condo, he
shook his head, scratched his head and grinned at himself in
the bathroom mirror. The furnished condo overlooking the
harbor belonged to a journalist buddy out on assignment. He'd
offered to pay rent but Gord said it was just going to sit empty.
Might as well keep it occupied. Works for me, Ben thought
and set himself up for a steaming shower.
"He was soon hailing a cab over to the studio to pick up the
keys. He was still getting used to the pulse of Boston and
being in a city where suicide bombers were unknown..."
By Mary Metcalfe
Spending a weekend with a delightful series is a wonderful vacation! Mary Metcalfe gives us lots of romance with a little suspense in each novel, but there is no doubt that she's created a set of characters with whom you will immediately feel at home. You might think about how your own family expands through marriage, births, joys and deaths but, so far, there is mostly love... It was soooo refreshing to enjoy the mutual attraction of a couple and watch it develop into something more...
Especially when it is happening in one family--and for the second time around...
In Winds of Change, three first marriages were lost through death...
Jennifer Barrett lost her husband and child in an accident. She works as a social worker who is just now trying to rebuild her life. I enjoyed how she seemed to blossom when she started a new relationship... While Lana Fitzpatrick was a nurse who worked at the senior home. She had a son Danny who you will soon come to love, as did the whole cast, LOL! And when Danny gets with Jennifer's dog, fun is all around!
"How are you now?"
"A lot better than I was even a month ago. I realize
now I was completely burned out. At least now I
don't walk around looking up for snipers but I still
feel more comfortable with my back to the wall in
restaurants. Just coming back, resting, exercising,
and eating properly has made a huge difference. I
feel like I'm standing on firm ground that isn't
to blow up when I least expect it...
"There are some places that are just too dangerous
to send in a journalist...
"Journalists aren't safe any more. I know some
who've been attacked and beaten up by mobs.
There was a case of a print reporter who had his
hands hacked at with a knife. They were trying
to prevent him from sending in his stories.
Female journalists have been raped."
~~~
Ben and Mark Powell have been estranged for many years. Mark had lived with his mother when she and Ben got divorced. It was Mark, then, who was his mother's only caregiver as she developed and died from cancer...

Ben is an internationally known journalist who has broadcasted from all parts of the world, but who could not face his son when his mother died...and went back to work soon after. After PTSD claimed him, he had decided to retire and when he reunites with his son, who has also suffered from severe depression, they tread carefully to try to build a relationship.

And it's all happening in Boston! At Brentwood's seniors residence...Jennifer's father lives there as an Alzheimer patient, but his mind for early memories abound and when Jennifer recommends one of her clients for a groundskeeper position, she is thrilled with an idea for the residents to be involved in gardening is approved, started, and that her father is soon guiding others through his knowledge!

One other character is Carol, Jennifer's best friend, who is always having man troubles, but this time, we get to watch it turn into a criminal investigation, when Ben, with his nose for truth versus lies, announces that there is something phony about Carol's latest!

I've purposely not given any info on the hookups that evolve in the book, so you'll enjoy those occasions as much as I did!

As some of you know, I have an interest in spotlighting what stress is doing to many of us. Mark suffered by feeling and being alone, seeing his mother suffer and die from cancer. Ben felt his audience needed to know what was happening in the world and so worked too hard and too long, traveling to too many dangerous places until he just could not go on...

I believe there are many who do not realize that what they feel is actually based upon the stress in their lives and that if it is not realized, it can mean death...I applaud this author for not only spotlighting but covering two different reasons by which your life can be instantly, or over a long time, changed in a dramatic way.

Aside from that, this is a great romantic tale that has little sexual details, but is full of what is most important in finding someone with whom to share your life. Definitely a contemporary women's story, but with much to offer men as well! Sit back and enjoy this one...Tomorrow will be New Beginnings as the family drama increases!

Savage Provides Stories From Many Genres...in...

Volchev's Story Made It to
Broadway - Freedom!

Bumping

and Other Stories

By W. Jack Savage

In a collection, readers are provided an opportunity to watch the diversity of interests of the author and, hopefully, find stories that merge with our personal interests. Indeed, W. Jack Savage in Bumping presents 12 tales that are so uniquely different, readers are bound to find at least one that especially speaks to them. For me, that story was "Andrew." This is a special love story that spoke to me in many ways...

Bumping and Other Stories
Andrew had been fired. Not because of his qualifications, but because he did not add to "the positive harmony" of the office. Something had happened to Andrew that had changed him, made him withdraw and not participate in social activities. He was quiet, brooding...

Trying to find another job proved difficult so he started to hire out for day labor. But the salary he was able to get was far less than he needed to pay his rent.

Finally, he and several others started to work for a woman in her yard. After he was given general instructions, he proceeded to work on the area he had been assigned. However, the woman stopped and questioned what he was doing. For he had done nothing but move rocks!

His response led her to hire him only to complete the work she needed... I loved their story...

                                                               ~~~
Let me also tell you a little about "Ellie is Here 2." With its surprise ending, this easily was one that also won favor. Ellie met Gary online, both needing someone to share with and little by little a friendship had developed via messenger and email.
But then Ellie disappeared. Gary searched in as many ways as he could to find her, sending ongoing emails. Gary knew something was wrong, something had happened to Ellie. He started to search newspapers...the obits...
                                                              ~~~

A strange drama, "Beginnings," also completely captured me. It's a love story in a way, but...strange...perhaps "quiet" sexual escapades could clarify... No, I think you just have to read it...

                                                             ~~~
And then there is the title story, "Bumping" which is a story about a man who is slowly losing himself to Alzheimer and is on his way to end his life when he bumped into a woman...
Savage's book also includes war stories, an armed robbery, a woman who lost her family power...a prisoner of war that is freed by Broadway...so much offered! There's joy, laughter, sadness and suspense to be found! Don't have much time to read...take this book with you and enjoy a short story while having lunch, on a work break, or even sitting in slow traffic! Intriguing tales to give you a break of enjoyment!
