The Naomi Chronicles by Paula Rose Michelson - Third in Series - Beginning Anew

 Start with the Debut of this amazing series!

“Nomi, you take my breath away!”
 “Oh, Chaz, I thought I imagined you saying that.”
Chaz smiled and kissed her. “Dear one, let us remember what we went through to come to this place and this time. Let us never take lightly the love we have for each other.”
“I promise… I will not forget.” “Amore, time has robbed us of many things. Commitments unconsecrated at the beginning of our marriage and your promise of their completion on that first Sunday night.”
She blushed. “This is true, but there is nothing we can do about that now.”
“We can have our special Sunday as you planned.”
Naomi took the measure of her man with new insight. “Do you mean to tell me that after all of this, you are willing to wait?”
“Sí, that is exactly what I mean. If there is one thing I have learned from all of this, it is that I need to be patient with you… with us.”

Beginning Anew:
The Naomi Chronicles

By Paula Rose Michelson

The drama that left us hanging in the first book is only compounded as we move into the second and on into the third! Naomi's heritage had been revealed and almost everybody, including her new husband had turned away in shock... Chaz had been more hurt than anything that Naomi had apparently not trusted him enough to share with him that she was a Jew.

Both Naomi and Chaz escaped and went off to work through what had happened, to decide what to do about their marriage, to consider whether they could continue in this "mixed" marriage...

However, a much larger shock was coming for Chaz as he went home and shared what had happened with his family--they were happy that he'd married a Jewish woman! He wondered if the whole world was turning upside down!

Yet, God, in His infinite wisdom, used this painful reality, for it is because of your ordeal that I have come to know myself fully. Could you imagine that God would use what happened to lift the blindness from my eyes and allow me to see myself as I truly am… a Jew. For, as I told you this evening, I am also of these people… your people. My parents hid this truth from me. Hearing their reasons for this choice helped me understand why you did this.
I could ask you to forgive me because I love you, because I cannot live without you, because I know you feel the same way I do. That was my intention until I became as I am now. Now I ask you to forgive me because I know you too have come to believe as I do. Therefore, I ask you to do as He commanded we do and extend grace to me. After all, beloved, when we forgive, it allows us to become like our Savior, as we love one another. Please let us not waste our lives but unite and live together as God intended us to be, husband and wife. Say Yes, Chaz

It was at that time that his family shared that they, too, were Jews and that they had kept it a secret for all these years to save him from what they had all gone through. Whether the shock was because he, too, was also a Jew, or whether he immediately realized what he had done to Naomi, was not easy and he had traveled a distant to a relative's home to talk with him and learn about his own heritage.

In the meantime, Naomi was also learning...and after much study, had come to know the Messiah as her Savior. Chaz, too, went through that study and contemplation, but it was harder for him since he did not have the background knowledge known by Naomi. He, too, came to recognize and accept the Messiah. And soon he came back to seek Naomi and ask for her forgiveness and love... As we move into the period after they've come together again, the return to their homes is not bringing the happiness they felt would be there...

Humming a few bars of ‘Until the Twelfth of Never’, which was the song Chaz had gifted her to show her his love when they first married; she glanced at the upper patio where he had taught her to dance. What a happy memory.

~~~
Although their love was strong enough, Naomi and Chaz still had much to learn about each other and adjust to their new relationship with God--how they would be received by those who had shun Naomi (and now him) as "Jesus Killers." Chaz had his own fears since he had a professional reputation that could be affected--even the first who called him a "Jew" on the street, cut a knife into his heart. Could he handle all that was happening to him and still come back together in marriage with Naomi?
The hatred and prejudice between those who were Catholic and those who were Jewish, but had come to accept Jesus as their Messiah was what continued to amaze me. This became such a main part of the book that both the local padre and the Jewish Rabbi had begun a relationship to try to deal with the upheaval. But, everything came to a head when, during the marriage ceremony of a couple for whom Naomi and Chaz had stood for them, it was offered that anybody that wanted to renew their vows could do so as part of this marriage celebration. Naomi and Chaz had taken advantage of it...and the  whole town was in turmoil...
“Do you know this music?” “No.” She sat down and opened the keyboard cover. After placing the score on the music rack, Naomi limbered her fingers and began to play. “I seem to remember hearing the name. However, these words are not familiar to me.” Chaz crossed to where she sat. Transfixed by the intricacy of the score, he noticed that her hands played while she looked at him. “I remember! This is The Moldau. It was written by Smetana.” “Since you know this music, you probably put it here and forgot.” “No… I did not.” Aware that something odd was happening, Naomi focused on her playing. It is as if my hands and heart are melded into this music, Naomi mused, aware that her hands were racing across the keyboard as the music engulfed them in a solemn song of freedom, intricately woven within the promise of joy.
 One other plot that added much to the story was that of  Vida, Naomi's predecessor of the house that provided shelter and support to immigrants who were going to be sent back. Vida had left her entire estate to Naomi, even though they had never really become close with intimacies about each other. However, Vida had left her journal to be given to her. And both before and during the time when Naomi was reading it, she was experiencing ghostly words coming to her. Naomi knew that Vida was communicating with her, wanting Naomi to know how she really had felt about her...and, that, she, too, was a Jew! And another secret of hers is revealed to an important friend of hers.
The majority of this book remains as the love story between Naomi and Chaz, but so many outside influences made it harder to spend time alone. There is much scripture shared as the couple turns their lives over to God as the primary one in their trinity. A poignant part of what was happening was that, even though they were already married, they had yet to consummate it... and as the second book ends, they still had not... This struggle between the couple to separate out sexual lust from the marriage trinity they wanted to have is certainly a gift from this book to all teens and young couples looking toward marriage!
“Blessed?” He smiled at her as he walked back to his bride. He understands me.
He held out his hand. “May I have this dance?”
 “Well… what if…
“I promise from now until Sunday, a dance will only be a dance, nothing more.”
Desiring him, and afraid that saying a word would be their undoing, Naomi stood, and placed her hand in his. They walked to their imaginary dance floor. While the song swirled around them, they swayed to the music andlistened to Nat King Cole’s mellow voice sing, “It was fascination…” “Naomi, you are the most fascinating woman I have ever known.” Chaz kissed her. “Wherever our journey takes us, my life is better because you are with me.” He started humming and, although she knew the record was playing, all Naomi needed and sensed was within the circle of his love. She closed her eyes and heard nothing until he said, his voice filled with longing, “This is not a brief romance.” He pulled away fromher so that he could look at her.
“Chaz, without you, I would have no one. My life and my heart would be empty.” The music played on as Chaz held her tight. “I know what it is to feel empty.”
“So do I.”
 “Do you know what the most fascinating thing is about all of this?”
“No… what?”
“The unique gift of being able to come together, fully known, and still be loved.”
 “Yes, that is fascinating.”
Now, this is fiction, of course, but one historical fact was thrown in during the second book and repeated in this book...I chose to believe it until somebody tells me differently...Did you know that all of the people who came to America from Spain were Jews that were escaping from persecution? Certainly this alone is a drawing point for history lovers, along with the other beliefs and actions taken by the Catholic Church...at least until the Padre gave a surprise sermon one Sunday...
The presentation of Naomi, in my opinion, has been faithfully followed from the point of her historical move to America and into the third book with a very specific message that began with the research and results, moved on into the personal life of the individual--her thoughts and realizations of her life--and then into the results of her decisions and changes based upon the past. The continuity is consistent, with sufficient carry over and repetition to allow individuals to be able to grasp what is happening without having read earlier books. Her historical information and its application into the story line of the two main characters, Naomi and Chaz, is excellent and dramatically presented to entice interest in their individual predicaments. Given the historical incident that started all that later happened, I found the manner of presentation, the use of language and concurrent translation quite well done and intellectually stimulating... Now even if I didn't love the character Naomi, I would still have to recognize the breadth of historical research that has been done to bring us from early Spain, the Catholic Church, and its relationship to Jews. This is an outstanding historical statement of the results of that horrific time period. But...what's going to happen next?!
Surprises, secrets, jealousy, suspicion, a touch of the supernatural, hate, love, and God's Word and plan for Naomi and Chaz all come together in an enthralling, epic and explosive ending to keep you thinking of what had happened...what was coming...and, most of all, what would your own position and beliefs be in light of the story? We've got to do better as God's children...This is a must-read, in my opinion...
Choosing To Be, FromThe Naomi Chronicles by Paula Rose Michelson...
Shame
Unlike Tía Rosa who risked her life to rescue a portion of God’s Word and kept it safe during the darkest days of the Inquisition, Naomi was ashamed, for she never chose to become the person she was. With everything that defined her now stripped away by one she had pledged to help, like she had done for so many niñas before this one that Naomi had lost count, this woman whom all in El Barrio thought of as a saint, finally admitted to herself that though she had been admired by all, she had not become the person she fled Spain to be.
Now even her husband, Chaz loathed her. Though she had lived in this casa half of her life, her years spent taking care of Madre Vida, and then when asked, giving up her life so the ministry she profited from would continue, and having married a man who told her that his love would last until ‘the twelfth of never’, she felt that providing a safe haven for girls facing deportation, and running the market so those in her community who needed jobs had them was worthless.
But then again, she thought, perhaps it is me that is worthless. After all, I have acquired nothing… nothing except a broken heart. Why, should I be treated this way for doing as I was taught? No! That is not true; she rallied at herself for she had known when she agreed to her American Madre’s request to become the next Las Niñas Tía that marriage, in fact anything akin to a personal commitment was something, she like the Tías before her could not, would not do.
Aware of the secrets she came to America to escape but never had, Naomi had known that a single life was the only one allowed her. As for falling in love, she had known that it could be her undoing. However, she had put her faith in Chaz who promised he would love her ‘until the twelfth of never.’ The twelfth of never’, never happened, she admitted as tears threatened to fall. She scolded herself, what does it matter… all will shun me now...
Choosing To Be
The Naomi Chronicles
By Paula Rose Michelson
Naomi was on her way to America, to meet her family, when, first, the family with whom she traveled had fired her when the elderly woman for whom she cared had died, and then when the U.S. Immigration stopped her from entering America. Not having anybody to guide her, she had followed the woman, Madre Vida, who said she would help, as she did with other ninas. Naomi never dreamed, however, that she would be pulled into this woman's life and ultimately asked to take over when she became ill and died.
With all that had happened, she realized that she would never marry, as did the former Tias before her... But then Chaz, one of the visitors to the casa, had come back to thank her and they fell in love. Still, Naomi had not shared the secret that her family had told her to keep forever...to keep herself safe, she must never let it be known that she was a Jew. So she wed without telling her husband...
Until one of the Ninas had searched her background, discovered her secret, and told everybody!
Choosing to Be is the story after this revelation. Chaz had been shocked and left her... Naomi was heartbroken and knew there was now no place for her in the place where she had live so long.
The personal stories During this time for Naomi and Chaz are amazingly similar and yet so unique that readers feel as if they have met each one and was at the place where each stayed after their tragic separation, so that we come to know their thoughts, their hearts, their hopes...and their new relationship with the Messiah...
Naomi had lost everything and found herself remembering the past and where she now was.
She almost smiled when she remembered that a few years ago people in El Barrio, or as the Spanish who settled there called it, Spanish Harlem began referring to her as a blessing as they had her tía. Abruptly she reminded herself why she had stayed once she fulfilled her obligation since circumstances… circumstances forced me to become Vida’s adopted daughter, since I knew I was the only daughter she would ever have. Though my real Madre was in Spain, I called Vida my Madre. Whenever I longed for mi mamá so much that I was overwhelmed, I would remember Madre Vida asking me to take over the work I had benefited from. Knowing that I could not leave the kindhearted woman who saved me from deportation, I vowed, “She is the only mother I will ever claim.” Finally, she thought of the waste that was now her life— a life she had to surrender to meet the needs of others. Had I left when I could, none of this pain would be mine! “Now,” she muttered, “after I worked so hard to bless others, I find I must flee as any thief would.”
But the worst part was losing Chaz, especially after he had promised so much--that he would care for her forever... Then he turned from her and walked away!
But there were a few who stayed true to Naomi and they went to her and explained they wanted to take her away and stay with their family... And that's when she met Ruth... who was not like any Jewish woman she'd ever met... Especially when she started sharing about her beliefs...
“I do not believe that! If you are a Jew, then you are called to walk with him, as you put it.”
 “Well, yes, but do you really think the God, the God of Abraham, of Isaac and Jacob meant for only us Jews to know him?”
 “Now you are talking foolishness! Our God is only for us. If that were not the case, we would not be hated as God’s Chosen People!”
Together with a charming little boy who grew close to her and willingly talked about his own feelings... This character lightened the many conversations she held as she struggled to learn...
“It is as if I have been walking in my own way and calling it his,” she said before she knew she was speaking.
 “Yep! Gamma always says we should ‘… walk in His way an’ lean not on our own understandin’… but in all our ways acknowledge Him an’ He will make our paths straight.’”
 “You have a wise grandmother.”
“No, Nomi. We have a great God. These aren’t Gamma’s words. They’re his.”
~~~

And so it was that Naomi slowly came to know her Messiah...

Such a beautiful, intriguing story!

But Chaz's story was every harder to share. For he had found out he, too, was Jewish and that it had been kept a secret, for his own protection, by his family. How difficult it was to discover such a thing just after he had turned away from his new, beloved wife! His family realized that he could not understand why they had kept his heritage a secret, so they sent him to talk with his uncle...

Interestingly, he was working an archaeological site and this added a certain excitement to the novel...because a new find was made! But the more he learned, the more he knew he had to return to Naomi...for he, too, had found
Him.

“All right, children!” Dorothea raised and lowered her hands. “We begin on the count of three, one, two, and three.” The music began followed by them singing the words,
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God…”
Chaz awoke. “Am I hearing the music and voices of angels?” He glanced around and noticed the children’s blankets had no children in them.
Before he could search for them, they laughingly exclaimed, “No, we are not angels! Come join us. We are at the other side of the water truck. Come. We have roasted marshmallows and are making some s’mores. If you like you can have some.”
~~~
This is the most emotional and illustrative of the Biblical scripture studies of the books thus far and certainly provides a learning experience of the potential scripture and guidance that people may need to find the Messiah. They discovered that much was said about Jesus in the Jewish Bible, but had never been explained and taught.
But was their new relationship with God, with The Messiah, enough to bring Naomi and Chaz back together and to return to their home to live? Review of the next book coming tomorrow. This book and the series are highly recommended.
Paula Rose Michelson Presents No Other Choice - Book 1 of What Promises To Be Outstanding Series! This has been added to my personal favorites for 2015!
Decree of Alhambra
As you read ‘No Other Choice’ please remember that our heroine’s story occurred while the Decree of Alhambra was still in effect. Before you begin, imagine what it would be like to grow up in a world where you were taught that who you are and what you believe might lead to your being arrested for life or killed and that what you experience could happen to your family. Those choices are the reason our heroine sets out on the journey you are about to experience. As she does, she thinks about America and silently repeats a line of Emma Lazarus’s poem, which says, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me …” --Preface
As they entered the building and turned down a dark corridor all Naomi could think was, now what will I do?
The man pointed to a chair in a stark office. Steeling her resolve, she entered, sat down, and clutched the old, brown, leather suitcase to her chest. Seeing an official take a man into a room, she heard his interview begin. The door shut. Her mind raced, now what… what now, demanding an answer. She closed her eyes, and tried to think of one but there were none. No answers for immigration, and she had known there would be none even before she ran away from home in the middle of the night without a goodbye or a note explaining. Aware that running away from the reality of being a Jew in a country that allowed only those of one faith, and that one not hers, to live there, she had planned to find her uncle once she was allowed into America and help him bring their family here. Tears formed. She blinked them back, certain that if she cried; she would never be allowed to enter America.
No Other Choice:
The Naomi Chronicles
By Paula Rose Michelson
I've read at least one other novel that took place during the religious persecution of Jews in Spain as provided for under the Decree of Alhambra. I have never been able to understand, in any way, how the Christian Church found it acceptable to use violence against those who had beliefs different from the Church; namely, the Catholic Church at that time. While the broader historical perspective is heinous in detail, I found the personal insight into just one life, Naomi, to be a truly outstanding revelation of what those individuals suffered on a personal basis, which continues, in my opinion, to a small or greater extent to today...
Naomi had proven to be a danger to her family back home due to her looks. I chose Lauren Bacall to act on behalf of Naomi--she's always had an interesting look different from others. It was natural for Naomi to try to act to save her family by leaving home when she was just a young girl. She was fortunate to become a companion to an elderly blind woman with whom she'd become close as she took care of her on the boat to America.
But she died before they had landed and the family quickly told Naomi that her services would no longer be needed...Meaning that they were no longer willing to sponsor her entrance to the United States! What was she going to do?
Aware that she would be sent back, the teenager muttered, “Oh, Adonai, I cannot go back there!” When she heard her own words, she thought, perhaps in America I should speak with Adonai in English, so she pled, “Oh, God, please help me … I cannot go back there!”
The old woman who sat down while Naomi was speaking asked, “Would you like to stay in America?”
 “Si!” Fearing the woman might not understand her, she switched to English. “I mean, yes… yes, I would. I would love to stay.”
“I will arrange it for you.” Naomi gasped. Maybe God is watching out for me after all! The small man leaving the office caught Naomi’s eye, and motioned for her to enter. When she stood, the old woman whispered as she rose. “Say nothing. Let me talk.”
That was the day that Naomi met La Senora, an old woman who came to the Immigration Office, when needed, to save young girls from being sent back to their homeland. She was introduced to Naomi as her sponsor, her Tia, your auntie...
Soon she was at her new home in what was then called Spanish Harlem...
You may wonder why I include "There is a Rose in Spanish Harlem" since this song was written later; however, some of the words reminded me of this story... You see, Naomi never came out during the day.. Specifically, Naomi went into the home of her new Tia and never came out again except to run errands perhaps when required... Years passed and she aided Tia in her work, never becoming acquainted with or meeting friends, other than the other girls that came into that house and then left to move on to a place that was arranged for them
.
What Naomi did do, however, was make use of the large library in the home and learned much about what was done to ensure that teenagers, left on their own, were not ever sent back...
Readers will easily assume, and be correct, in thinking that Naomi had been picked, out of all those who had come into that home, to be the new Tia. She did not know that until death had announced it to the world. Many were surprised and several tried to step in and take over, thinking this mouse of a girl was not prepared to handle what she discovered was a rather large estate... Naomi proved everybody wrong...
Perhaps she would have stayed there until she, too, died. But one of the men who had been helped by the Tia had come back and fell in love with Naomi... Again, she had to face the question, What was she going to do
Naomi had safely held her true identity a secret from everybody. Even her name was not her own. How could she consider an intimate relationship--even though she had for years longed to have exactly that!?
And then one of those "Spanish roses" was picked up at Immigration and came to live--everything started moving toward a collision course!
One of the things I quickly thought about was Naomi's inability to practice her faith..to sing out, to worship with others, instead of hiding her weekly quiet times during which she was able to communicate with God... I have always enjoyed many Jewish songs, such as from The Fiddler on the Roof...
Naomi had left home because she looked too Jewish and was causing problems for her family who had to hide and act as those who had been converted... She had no family. She had been forced to abandon her hope to find and stay with her uncle. She had no one when Tia had died. Now she was faced with what to do with her future... With no family to talk with, to help her decide...
Now she was falling in love, but had absolutely no experience with a relationship with a man...and there were so many secrets... But then he introduced her to a song...
“I bought a song for you … for us.” He hoped that she would understand what he implied and searched her face. Satisfied, he put the music on and led his bride to the imaginary dance floor. “I believe this song is one that you have never heard. It was popular in the fifties. I selected it for you because it speaks of us. Listen to the words and you will know, beloved, how much I understood about you even though we did not know each other as well as we do now when I selected this gift. Even the things that you had not shared with me, somehow I knew about them.”
Naomi smiled and struggled to quiet her racing heart. She wanted to experience the song the way Chaz envisioned she would and took a deep breath to calm herself. She saw Chaz’s eyes fill with expectation and worried that she might not have the reaction he wanted. However, as suddenly as they had come, her concerns evaporated. It feels as if an angel has sent a message to my heart, she thought as the song filled the garden and she discovered the exquisite
beauty of Chaz’s love for her while they danced together as Johnny Mathis’s sang, “Until the twelfth of Never, I’ll still be…” the beating of Naomi’s heart eclipsed the music, for it was all she heard until Chaz said, his breath hot against her skin, “I did not know how much I needed you until you found me.” Naomi nodded but could say nothing for those few words were all could think because they were her truth. Naomi happily beating heart rejoiced as the music swirled around them; and she smiled up at him.
 “What fragrance are you wearing, my beloved?” she heard him ask as he pulled her closer and sighed. Chaz’s kiss was slow and sweet. “Since you have decided to just listen, I will tell you that I never thought it would be like this.”
~~~

The church, with its spires and stained glass windows, came into view. Aware that the shortest route home required her to walk by the church she knew she must take it if she was to return before Chaz missed her. The edifice appeared to overshadow everything else, and memories of early evening twilight on Friday nights in Spain surfaced. She smiled as she saw in her mind’s eye how her mamá would gather her and her sisters together, make sure they were dressed in their very best, walk with them to the church, and have them light their candle.
She could almost hear her admonish, "Always remember we use their practice to hide our own. When you light your candle, pray to El Shadai, and he who is unseen will hear you even though we are in a place that does not know him.” When she turned the corner and looked at her home, she breathed a sigh of relief. She opened the gate, thought about her mother’s faith, and told herself, I can do this.
~~~
I was so moved by this book that I knew it was one of my personal favorites for 2015... It is hard to accept that anybody could ever be persecuted because of their faith and yet it happened, and still does... The book is timely, yet historical. Have we reached a point when we accept all religions as the right of choice for each individual? We all know that many have not... Read this story and you will not only sympathize, but you will be able to emphasize with Naomi as she struggles to be able to live...with her faith... I loved this and am already looking forward to the next book in the series.
No matter what religion you follow, this book will speak to you...about tolerance, about freedom of religion, about prejudice and the murderous results of some of those feelings! May we continue to move together toward understanding and love...This book, this story will help...all you have to do is let the words speak on behalf of the Naomi's of this world...
Little did she know that hearing Messianic believer and Pastor, David Hocking speak about Zion being both the land of Eretz Yisrael (Israel) and the Jewish people would lead her to research what befell the Spanish Jews (Sephardic) before, during and after the Inquisition. Beginning to write, word spread and some Sephardim contacted her to offer their stories. However, Naomi had already begun telling this dyslectic artist about her life, which is now a six volume romantic inspirational faith saga.
Other books - both fiction and nonfiction followed - but at her core, Paula's desire to faithfully depict Gods love, compassion, and forgiveness are the reason she continues to write. And having founded LAMB Ministries in 1988, Paula knows the biblical tools God taught her, which she faithfully passes on to women suffering from trauma and abuse are needed by all, so she includes a few within the pages of each book.
