Paula Rose Michelson's Second in The Crucible of Becoming Series, They Must See Me! With Book Sound Track (?!)

The second story in Michelson's Crucible Series ( a severe trial, out of which something new will come) is more contemporary--perhaps because it is much more in the news since the MeToo! movement has emboldened women and young girls to be more willing to speak out about abuse. But for the individual young girl who might have lost her virginity through rape, it is a much more traumatic experience with potential long-term feeling of no longer being the same girl, the same woman who wanted to go to her future husband as a young virgin, with love for only her fiancee...

“Need some help?” Eldora asked. Tears streamed down Myra’s face. “There, there. It can’t be that bad, can it?”
Gulping back a sob, Myra asked, “Are you kidding? Between being raped, having a mom who always bought me what she wore, a dad who continues to call me Rosebud, as if I were still pure enough to be his substitute wife, and a sis who won’t look at me—and it’s almost time to go to back school!” She flung herself on her bed and wailed.
“I know, I know.” Eldora sat down and pulled Myra into her loving embrace. “NO, you don’t know! You have no idea! No idea at all! Even looking at the yellow and blue pinstripe wallpaper mom helped Mindy and I pick out for our bedroom makes me feel like I’ll never be me!”
“Well, let’s see—”
“No Gran, El, or Eldora, whichever you want me to call you! You can’t make up for all the years we didn’t know you existed.”
“That’s true and I’m sad about that. However, that wasn’t my choice! I was forced!”
“Forced!
How can you use that word to describe what happened to you when you know the horror I had to endure?”
Grandma Eldora’s blue eyes filled with tears. Aware that crying over what happened to Myra wouldn’t help her, she quickly dashed them away.
“What’s up?” Myra’s sister Mindy flopped on the other twin bed. It’s bad enough that I have to dress like mom. Why oh, why did my twin sis and I have to have names that people mix up! Eldora’s penetrating gaze seemed to assess Myra.
Finally, she insisted, “We’re going shopping!”
“Thanks, Gran. I’ll be ready in a minute!” Mindy exclaimed.
“Mindy, I meant to say that I’m taking Myra shopping.”
“Since she always wants to dress like mom, why take her?”
 I never wanted to dress like mom, but no one asked me what I wanted. No one ever has. “Well, let’s call it a coming-out-of-her-cocoon moment.”
“Mom, I was walking by and heard one of your metaphors, so what gives?” Shirley asked.
“It’s Gran time with Myra. Nothing special—but, I do think it’s time this gal picks out her own duds.”
“I don’t know if Dave would like that. He’s always called Myra his ‘Rosebud’ because,” she blushed, “he says that I’m his rose.”
“And you are. But I seem to remember a wise counselor who said each person needed to self-actualize.”
Eldora grabbed Myra’s hand.   “Trapped by my own words. Okay, Grandma, how much will you need?” Shirley asked as she hurried to her purse. Pulling Myra out of bed, Eldora said, “You’re almost an adult, so you tell your mom what you’ll need.”
“I, I, I can’t,” she whispered. Eyes filled with tears, she insisted, “Besides, I don’t need anything!”
“All right. Then tell her what you want.”
What I want: I want to be pure the way I was before that man raped me. I want to feel loved and accepted for being me, not a mom copy. I want to be able to go to school without everyone looking at me. I want the fear that someone might find out what happened to me—and think I liked it or that I’d want to do it again—go away.
“Well, Myra,” her mom asked, “what do you want?”
“I want to be me, but I don’t know who that is!” Shirley ran to Myra and held her close.
 “Is this because of the rape?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“I don’t think I can say,” Myra sobbed.
“Do you know why?”
“Umm—”
“But you won’t tell me?” Myra nodded. “Is it something I’ve done?”
A look of terror crossed Myra’s face. “This is about the rape, isn’t it!”
Sobbing, Myra nodded.
 “Tell me.”
While Myra ran from her and Mindy’s room, she hollered, “I can’t!”
 “Hey, what’s this all about?” Dave asked as his elder daughter almost collided with him. “Dad, I can’t do this anymore!”
“Can’t do what?
“You know, Dad.”
“I know that whatever you set your mind to do, you’ve done.”
“That was then. This is now!”
“Rosebud, I believe in you.”
 “No, Dad, you don’t, because you—none of you know me! And DON’T call me ROSEBUD!”
~~~
I am so happy that Paula Rose Michelson has taken on a challenge of dealing with the issues of today's world, using her own background, experience, and Biblical study. A teenager has it hard enough...as in this family, what was okay in the past, to dress a child as her mother, was a fun thing to do. But Myra had gotten older and realized that dressing like her mother was totally inappropriate at her age. But how to tell her parents...
But what happened to her then, being raped by a stranger, had left her totally defenseless, not knowing where to turn--she didn't feel her family even knew her--and feeling so ashamed and lost. Now she would never be the same girl. And she knew if others found out at school, they would really start with the catty remarks appropriate to the action... What to Do?!
While they waited for Randy to bring their pizza, Tom asked, “Ever heard the song “Another Brick in the Wall”?
 “Yah. That’s one of Pink Floyd’s greatest hits.”
“Do you like the song?” Randy asked as Tom handed Myra a soda.
Playing with a straw, Myra asked, “Why do you ask?”
“Well, the way we hear it, you’re bricking yourself in by your behavior.”
~~~

Myra was not the first, nor the last, individual who felt they were all alone. And a normal reaction, is to build ourselves a wall around us, to protect us, to ignore what pain we are experiencing with each wrong look, each sarcastic word...

Eldora, who is a main character in the first book, has been acknowledged, and welcomed into the family as grandmother. And, fortunately, as this devastating time arose, Eldora had brought God into the house... Eldora is a wonderful character. You can feel both her own hurt from the past as she remembers, but you can also see and feel the joy of finding His love in her life, knowing that she was safe in His precious arms... How she wanted it for her family... And somehow, through experience or His Holy Spirit, she always seemed to know what to do...

First, she took Myra shopping and got clothes that she had picked out herself. That in itself took out a brick or two from her wall, don't you think?

But there was something about the man who raped her that she had never shared, except when she began counseling. But it was clear that he thought what was said was a lie by the man, to control Myra...

Eldora hugged her. “Did I ever tell you that I never married?”
 “Well, no, but that would mean that you’re not a—”
“That’s right. I’m not a virgin. We’re sorta like two peas in a pod, you and me.” “But I heard that you loved Rodger, so—”
“Myra, how I felt has nothing to do with what happened and what I had to deal with. You may have to face some of those things, as well. So we, you and I, need to rely upon each other.”
~~~
Myra had chosen to go goth and began to act and speak differently at school, until the day that her parents were told they couldn't have her act as she was doing. Fortunately, her parents supported Myra and they took her out of that school...but more turmoil was still ahead... and danger...
“I know where and I’ll be there.”
“Be sure to get some booze down you before we pick you up.
It’ll make the first time more—.”
“Promise you’re not going to tell anyone, and I’ll—”
 “Oh, dear God, how wonderful are your ways!”
 “If you think what I’m about to tell you is wonderful, you’re delusional!”
“Mom, we know you credit Jesus for who you became and that works for you but—”
 “Glad to hear that you’re afraid so I can share that God knew you’d be feeling this way.”
“Why do you say that?”
“Because in Proverbs 9:10, He told us, ‘The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.’”
“Since God says we’re wise, I don’t see any reason to do this.”
 “Then you’re going to keep silent and let that man get away with what he’s done, knowing he’ll do it again?” Eldora eyed each of them. “I think I know what’ll help.”
With a sigh of relief, Myra asked, “Gram, what’ve you got in mind?”
“English author Hannah Hurnard wrote “Hinds Feet on High Places” in 1955, Eldora said. “The heroine of her allegory is a young woman named Much Afraid, who, just like the two of you, must choose what she’ll do before she can have the courage she needs to do what she wants.”
Look, Shirl, it’s 4:30 in the morning so as long as you’re all happy, to paraphrase a popular song, ‘It Don’t Matter to Me.’”
“But it very much will, so while I make a pot of coffee, get your butt down here.”
“Oh, all right! But this better be good.”
Hearing their banter, Eldora raised her eyes to heaven.
Thank you, Lord, for all you’ve done...
“But—” When Eldora shook her head, Dave added. “Whatever you need to tell me, us, know that I love and trust you, Shirl.”
 “Your words mean the world to me. My fear of losing your love kept me silent for too long.”
El hugged them. “Lord, you’ve blessed me exceedingly. Now, let me go where fear kept me away, since the only thing I need to fear is displeasing You, Jesus!”
~~~.

I think the most enthralling thing for me about this and the first story was that within the family drama, the characters were so life-like that it seemed like you were listening on your neighbors' conversations through thin walls... On the other hand, what was most fascinating was that the author was able to select contemporary songs that readers will immediately identify, and allow the words of the music to add to the setting, the "life" of the book as we read. I loved it, as you may have guessed by now. LOL And I'm certainly looking forward to the next story. With the high level of sexuality blatant in today's world, it was a blessing to have an author take these segments which are usually hidden or ignored--or worse, tucked down deep into our minds where only our nightmares may bring them to the fore again. May God's rich blessings continue to be on this Child of God, Paula Rose Michelson.

Get the books and share them with your family and friends! Highly recommended.

Paula Rose Michelson Presents Book 1 of The Crucible of Becoming, The Time Between (With "Sound Track"?!!!)

I am excited to tell you about an interesting series of short stories that have been uniquely formulated...first around various songs. Each chapter has a song as the title and provides an idea of what that chapter will provided... For instance, Chapter 1 introduces the main character and someone told her to go and find her smile...

Rock, paper, scissors, isn’t that how it goes? Sometimes we have to dig our way out…or is it dig our way in? I forget. Silence Maybe you’re not really there, but then you must be because I’m talking to you. Or am I thinking. Hahahaha…I sound crazy!! Crazy because…say, have you ever noticed that everyone’s recognized for something, and those noticing…well, they notice out of love. That is, unless you’re me. My stuff gets noticed because I’m…maybe that’s why I love food so much.
Not just any food, no siree! I love my grandpa’s baked goods, an’ it’s been workin’ for me ‘cause he owns a bakery and lives next door.  Oh, no! I remind myself as I begin to wake up. That’s not really true. They were just nice people who fed me and helped me pretend. But they weren’t mine! I hear my mom screaming for me to hurry and get dressed for school. Knowing if I’m late, I’m gonna…but I hear dad talkin’ and smile. It’s not gonna be a flyswatter day, ‘cause dad’s home.
I jump out of bed and hurry to get to the kitchen on time. I don’t remember anything else. Nothin’ until I’m standing in someone else’s flower bed trying to snap their snapdragons and crying cause grandma…my make-believe grandma, told me ‘the scares’ would go away when I heard a snap. None snap for me.  Looking up, I see cars rounding the bend and realize I’d better hurry home before I catch hell again.
Someone sees me and hollers, “Shirley, your mom’s lookin’ for you!”  Yah, that’s my name, Shirley, as in, “What happened to you? You were supposed to look like Shirley Temple! You got the right color hair and eyes but you’re just a…”
Every time I hear that, I want to say, no, I was supposed to look the way God made me…and I do! Instead I hear mom sigh and then… Lalala, oh God, make it go away! I don’t want to hear THAT word again! And please don’t let her wallop me with that fly encrusted swatter! Mom doesn’t say it, at least, I think she didn’t, but all I hear is disappointment ringin’ over and over in my ears until I wish I were deaf. Oh God, why me? I must be stupid to be worried about that flyswatter while wishing and waiting for an answer from a God who dropped me into the uterus of a woman who… When all else seems to…I want to pray but…… Since no one in my home prays or talks about God, fat chance at Him listening to me. After all, what am I? Just one big mistake… That’s what!
~~~
Sometimes when life hits you hard and long and, seemingly, with no reason, it permanently affects you in some way. Crucible, a severe trial, out of which something new will come, presents in this first short story, our main character, Shirley was now an adult, a speech therapist, married, but, she never seemed to smile... You may think of this book as an "intervention." You see, Shirley had never faced what had happened to her when she was a child. Worse, she didn't understand why she had gone through what she had...
Now she was forced to...and she reacted immediately...she ran... But where could she go?
Where can you go when you are being confronted with your fear, your anger--all that has hurt throughout your life, even if it were buried from your daily life. What would it take for Shirley to take that first step?
This story is an emotional seesaw that takes readers to the depth of pain of not only one person, but another. The difference is that one of those individuals has found the love of God and his wondrous forgiveness. This discovery was not known by Shirley, but she saw and watched and listened as the other woman, once a friend, explained what had been denied Shirley all her life--the Truth!
The story itself is not heartwarming, yet the emotional response of what happened for the characters, will have an inspirational impact on readers who take the time...and understand...to see how bad things happen that, once the truth is revealed, can result in good, loving understanding...
This first story is continued in the next...I highly recommend you read this first to get the full impact of the second (I didn't, so I know)...Please read this story from the beginning!
“This is about you becoming your own best friend.”
“...You needed to grow where God planted you and learn the lessons that were there.”
It seemed to me that here, of all places, I was smiling a real heartfelt smile. I was neither angry nor sad that it happened this way, though I was mystified as to the details that brought me to this moment.
And now ‘El’ was sad, and though I couldn’t…didn’t know diddly, I thought it was something that had to do with me, though for the life of me,
I had no idea what that could be.
I awoke, and it was another day. Feeling at sixes and sevens, as I always had when here, I suddenly knew Thomas Wolfe was wrong. I was once again home, once more a prisoner of ‘Heartbreak Hotel’, ‘cept I knew this wasn’t a hotel, ‘cause it had always been the ‘Pit of Hell’!
But how can I? Knowing that families have issues that each generation has to deal with, would my giving in make me a victim again…amend that to still...
Was I a fool to stay? I’d never know if I left, so very aware that the questions I’d never asked, and those I asked that were never answered, could be...
The woman I’d called ‘sweetie’, a short while ago…
Oh God, do I really need to know?
This is a family story. In this case, it is about a mother and child...but it is also about her husband, who loved her, Shirley, enough to know that she was not completely happy... He was willing to risk, potentially, everything for her to find her place in this world...
“Okay now, Shirley.” She forced a chuckle, and much to my surprise, she joined me in this singsong song. At the end, we were both giggling...
It’s because of that… Say, do your kids ever watch the Magilla Gorilla Show?” “What’s that got to do with this?”
 “The Magilla is what I’m about to share.”
Oh gosh, I found myself thinking, I’ve heard many need to regress but I’m not going to play this game mom, or no mom! “In the middle of my, I mean your, story, after all this time, you want to talk about a kids’ cartoon show?”
...my head still screaming at me, it’s all your fault. You’re a sinner and though saved by grace, I cannot forgive myself unless…
“Yes. And they wanted to have children.” “It sounds like none of you got what you…” “We would have, if only—” “If only what?”
...while some woman yelled, “Please God, don’t let them kill each other!” I don’t know what would’ve happened. As it was, Shirl turned away from me.
 “You’re all about God, so that’s gotta be for you!”
 “Both of you can get where you want to be if you remember the name, I mean title, of a song from an old Broadway. Umm, what was that tune called… Ah, that’s it! ‘It’s never too late to fall in love’.”
 I held you for the very last time and sang…
of all things, what I’d come to think of as our song.”
 “I’ve been hearing a song in my heart forever.”
“How do you know that my truth is yours?”
 “Because I’ve been hearing that song in my heart forever.”
  I find myself wondering what Jesus would have done,
not that I’m going to believe...
You know, I read a couple of comments about this not being a "clean" book. Well, many times our life, indeed, is not clean... When you stop to think about it, can you really love and thank God if He's never cleansed you of whatever "dirt" may come your way, oftentimes of no fault of your own. This is an amazing story...Don't allow yourself to be turned away by those who will not recognize that Christ died because none of us are "clean..." until we know Him.
Watch for the second story next...
Note: I substituted a song...Home Again (my only contribution to the sound track...LOL)
The Naomi Chronicles by Paula Rose Michelson - Third in Series - Beginning Anew
 Start with the Debut of this amazing series!
“Nomi, you take my breath away!”
 “Oh, Chaz, I thought I imagined you saying that.”
Chaz smiled and kissed her. “Dear one, let us remember what we went through to come to this place and this time. Let us never take lightly the love we have for each other.”
“I promise… I will not forget.” “Amore, time has robbed us of many things. Commitments unconsecrated at the beginning of our marriage and your promise of their completion on that first Sunday night.”
She blushed. “This is true, but there is nothing we can do about that now.”
“We can have our special Sunday as you planned.”
Naomi took the measure of her man with new insight. “Do you mean to tell me that after all of this, you are willing to wait?”
“Sí, that is exactly what I mean. If there is one thing I have learned from all of this, it is that I need to be patient with you… with us.”
Beginning Anew:
The Naomi Chronicles
By Paula Rose Michelson
The drama that left us hanging in the first book is only compounded as we move into the second and on into the third! Naomi's heritage had been revealed and almost everybody, including her new husband had turned away in shock... Chaz had been more hurt than anything that Naomi had apparently not trusted him enough to share with him that she was a Jew.
Both Naomi and Chaz escaped and went off to work through what had happened, to decide what to do about their marriage, to consider whether they could continue in this "mixed" marriage...
However, a much larger shock was coming for Chaz as he went home and shared what had happened with his family--they were happy that he'd married a Jewish woman! He wondered if the whole world was turning upside down!
Yet, God, in His infinite wisdom, used this painful reality, for it is because of your ordeal that I have come to know myself fully. Could you imagine that God would use what happened to lift the blindness from my eyes and allow me to see myself as I truly am… a Jew. For, as I told you this evening, I am also of these people… your people. My parents hid this truth from me. Hearing their reasons for this choice helped me understand why you did this.
I could ask you to forgive me because I love you, because I cannot live without you, because I know you feel the same way I do. That was my intention until I became as I am now. Now I ask you to forgive me because I know you too have come to believe as I do. Therefore, I ask you to do as He commanded we do and extend grace to me. After all, beloved, when we forgive, it allows us to become like our Savior, as we love one another. Please let us not waste our lives but unite and live together as God intended us to be, husband and wife. Say Yes, Chaz
It was at that time that his family shared that they, too, were Jews and that they had kept it a secret for all these years to save him from what they had all gone through. Whether the shock was because he, too, was also a Jew, or whether he immediately realized what he had done to Naomi, was not easy and he had traveled a distant to a relative's home to talk with him and learn about his own heritage.
In the meantime, Naomi was also learning...and after much study, had come to know the Messiah as her Savior. Chaz, too, went through that study and contemplation, but it was harder for him since he did not have the background knowledge known by Naomi. He, too, came to recognize and accept the Messiah. And soon he came back to seek Naomi and ask for her forgiveness and love... As we move into the period after they've come together again, the return to their homes is not bringing the happiness they felt would be there...
Humming a few bars of ‘Until the Twelfth of Never’, which was the song Chaz had gifted her to show her his love when they first married; she glanced at the upper patio where he had taught her to dance. What a happy memory.
~~~

Although their love was strong enough, Naomi and Chaz still had much to learn about each other and adjust to their new relationship with God--how they would be received by those who had shun Naomi (and now him) as "Jesus Killers." Chaz had his own fears since he had a professional reputation that could be affected--even the first who called him a "Jew" on the street, cut a knife into his heart. Could he handle all that was happening to him and still come back together in marriage with Naomi?

The hatred and prejudice between those who were Catholic and those who were Jewish, but had come to accept Jesus as their Messiah was what continued to amaze me. This became such a main part of the book that both the local padre and the Jewish Rabbi had begun a relationship to try to deal with the upheaval. But, everything came to a head when, during the marriage ceremony of a couple for whom Naomi and Chaz had stood for them, it was offered that anybody that wanted to renew their vows could do so as part of this marriage celebration. Naomi and Chaz had taken advantage of it...and the  whole town was in turmoil...

“Do you know this music?” “No.” She sat down and opened the keyboard cover. After placing the score on the music rack, Naomi limbered her fingers and began to play. “I seem to remember hearing the name. However, these words are not familiar to me.” Chaz crossed to where she sat. Transfixed by the intricacy of the score, he noticed that her hands played while she looked at him. “I remember! This is The Moldau. It was written by Smetana.” “Since you know this music, you probably put it here and forgot.” “No… I did not.” Aware that something odd was happening, Naomi focused on her playing. It is as if my hands and heart are melded into this music, Naomi mused, aware that her hands were racing across the keyboard as the music engulfed them in a solemn song of freedom, intricately woven within the promise of joy.
~~~
 One other plot that added much to the story was that of  Vida, Naomi's predecessor of the house that provided shelter and support to immigrants who were going to be sent back. Vida had left her entire estate to Naomi, even though they had never really become close with intimacies about each other. However, Vida had left her journal to be given to her. And both before and during the time when Naomi was reading it, she was experiencing ghostly words coming to her. Naomi knew that Vida was communicating with her, wanting Naomi to know how she really had felt about her...and, that, she, too, was a Jew! And another secret of hers is revealed to an important friend of hers.
The majority of this book remains as the love story between Naomi and Chaz, but so many outside influences made it harder to spend time alone. There is much scripture shared as the couple turns their lives over to God as the primary one in their trinity. A poignant part of what was happening was that, even though they were already married, they had yet to consummate it... and as the second book ends, they still had not... This struggle between the couple to separate out sexual lust from the marriage trinity they wanted to have is certainly a gift from this book to all teens and young couples looking toward marriage!
“Blessed?” He smiled at her as he walked back to his bride. He understands me.
He held out his hand. “May I have this dance?”
 “Well… what if…
“I promise from now until Sunday, a dance will only be a dance, nothing more.”
Desiring him, and afraid that saying a word would be their undoing, Naomi stood, and placed her hand in his. They walked to their imaginary dance floor. While the song swirled around them, they swayed to the music andlistened to Nat King Cole’s mellow voice sing, “It was fascination…” “Naomi, you are the most fascinating woman I have ever known.” Chaz kissed her. “Wherever our journey takes us, my life is better because you are with me.” He started humming and, although she knew the record was playing, all Naomi needed and sensed was within the circle of his love. She closed her eyes and heard nothing until he said, his voice filled with longing, “This is not a brief romance.” He pulled away fromher so that he could look at her.
“Chaz, without you, I would have no one. My life and my heart would be empty.” The music played on as Chaz held her tight. “I know what it is to feel empty.”
“So do I.”
 “Do you know what the most fascinating thing is about all of this?”
“No… what?”
“The unique gift of being able to come together, fully known, and still be loved.”
 “Yes, that is fascinating.”
~~~

Now, this is fiction, of course, but one historical fact was thrown in during the second book and repeated in this book...I chose to believe it until somebody tells me differently...Did you know that all of the people who came to America from Spain were Jews that were escaping from persecution? Certainly this alone is a drawing point for history lovers, along with the other beliefs and actions taken by the Catholic Church...at least until the Padre gave a surprise sermon one Sunday...

The presentation of Naomi, in my opinion, has been faithfully followed from the point of her historical move to America and into the third book with a very specific message that began with the research and results, moved on into the personal life of the individual--her thoughts and realizations of her life--and then into the results of her decisions and changes based upon the past. The continuity is consistent, with sufficient carry over and repetition to allow individuals to be able to grasp what is happening without having read earlier books. Her historical information and its application into the story line of the two main characters, Naomi and Chaz, is excellent and dramatically presented to entice interest in their individual predicaments. Given the historical incident that started all that later happened, I found the manner of presentation, the use of language and concurrent translation quite well done and intellectually stimulating... Now even if I didn't love the character Naomi, I would still have to recognize the breadth of historical research that has been done to bring us from early Spain, the Catholic Church, and its relationship to Jews. This is an outstanding historical statement of the results of that horrific time period. But...what's going to happen next?!

Surprises, secrets, jealousy, suspicion, a touch of the supernatural, hate, love, and God's Word and plan for Naomi and Chaz all come together in an enthralling, epic and explosive ending to keep you thinking of what had happened...what was coming...and, most of all, what would your own position and beliefs be in light of the story? We've got to do better as God's children...This is a must-read, in my opinion...

A writer from an early age, when asked about the idea for The Naomi Chronicles, Paula says, "I cannot take all the credit for Naomi started telling me her story, and together we penned the six fictions."

When not involved in writing, speaking or helping other writers, Paula Rose Michelson pursues other passions while supporting her husband Ron who is a Lutheran Pastor and Chosen People Ministries field missionary. At one point she and her spouse worked for the mission. However, her desire to write for the Lord full time lead her to leave that work so she could devote herself to this work.

This mother of two married daughters and grandmother of seven has been known to weave such wonderful tails that sometimes those involved lose track of the time. At her core, both family and her ever increasing reader family matter to Paula, so while writing to entertain, she hopes to impart a blessing to those who read her fictions and nonfiction's.

Some who first knew this author as the founder, head, and facilitator of LAMB Ministries, have mentioned that a few of those teachings are found within her books. Paula knows this to be true for her desire to faithfully depict Gods love, compassion, and forgiveness while showing her readers The Jewish Messiah of Israel and the world parallel her desire to see those precious wounded ones restored to wholeness, so within each of her books, she includes a few of her biblically based teachings so others can overcome and feel good about themselves.

Choosing To Be, FromThe Naomi Chronicles by Paula Rose Michelson...

Shame
Unlike Tía Rosa who risked her life to rescue a portion of God’s Word and kept it safe during the darkest days of the Inquisition, Naomi was ashamed, for she never chose to become the person she was. With everything that defined her now stripped away by one she had pledged to help, like she had done for so many niñas before this one that Naomi had lost count, this woman whom all in El Barrio thought of as a saint, finally admitted to herself that though she had been admired by all, she had not become the person she fled Spain to be.
Now even her husband, Chaz loathed her. Though she had lived in this casa half of her life, her years spent taking care of Madre Vida, and then when asked, giving up her life so the ministry she profited from would continue, and having married a man who told her that his love would last until ‘the twelfth of never’, she felt that providing a safe haven for girls facing deportation, and running the market so those in her community who needed jobs had them was worthless.
But then again, she thought, perhaps it is me that is worthless. After all, I have acquired nothing… nothing except a broken heart. Why, should I be treated this way for doing as I was taught? No! That is not true; she rallied at herself for she had known when she agreed to her American Madre’s request to become the next Las Niñas Tía that marriage, in fact anything akin to a personal commitment was something, she like the Tías before her could not, would not do.
Aware of the secrets she came to America to escape but never had, Naomi had known that a single life was the only one allowed her. As for falling in love, she had known that it could be her undoing. However, she had put her faith in Chaz who promised he would love her ‘until the twelfth of never.’ The twelfth of never’, never happened, she admitted as tears threatened to fall. She scolded herself, what does it matter… all will shun me now...

Choosing To Be
The Naomi Chronicles

By Paula Rose Michelson

Naomi was on her way to America, to meet her family, when, first, the family with whom she traveled had fired her when the elderly woman for whom she cared had died, and then when the U.S. Immigration stopped her from entering America. Not having anybody to guide her, she had followed the woman, Madre Vida, who said she would help, as she did with other ninas. Naomi never dreamed, however, that she would be pulled into this woman's life and ultimately asked to take over when she became ill and died.

With all that had happened, she realized that she would never marry, as did the former Tias before her... But then Chaz, one of the visitors to the casa, had come back to thank her and they fell in love. Still, Naomi had not shared the secret that her family had told her to keep forever...to keep herself safe, she must never let it be known that she was a Jew. So she wed without telling her husband...

Until one of the Ninas had searched her background, discovered her secret, and told everybody!

Choosing to Be is the story after this revelation. Chaz had been shocked and left her... Naomi was heartbroken and knew there was now no place for her in the place where she had live so long.

The personal stories During this time for Naomi and Chaz are amazingly similar and yet so unique that readers feel as if they have met each one and was at the place where each stayed after their tragic separation, so that we come to know their thoughts, their hearts, their hopes...and their new relationship with the Messiah...

Naomi had lost everything and found herself remembering the past and where she now was.

She almost smiled when she remembered that a few years ago people in El Barrio, or as the Spanish who settled there called it, Spanish Harlem began referring to her as a blessing as they had her tía. Abruptly she reminded herself why she had stayed once she fulfilled her obligation since circumstances… circumstances forced me to become Vida’s adopted daughter, since I knew I was the only daughter she would ever have. Though my real Madre was in Spain, I called Vida my Madre. Whenever I longed for mi mamá so much that I was overwhelmed, I would remember Madre Vida asking me to take over the work I had benefited from. Knowing that I could not leave the kindhearted woman who saved me from deportation, I vowed, “She is the only mother I will ever claim.” Finally, she thought of the waste that was now her life— a life she had to surrender to meet the needs of others. Had I left when I could, none of this pain would be mine! “Now,” she muttered, “after I worked so hard to bless others, I find I must flee as any thief would.”

But the worst part was losing Chaz, especially after he had promised so much--that he would care for her forever... Then he turned from her and walked away!

But there were a few who stayed true to Naomi and they went to her and explained they wanted to take her away and stay with their family... And that's when she met Ruth... who was not like any Jewish woman she'd ever met... Especially when she started sharing about her beliefs...

“I do not believe that! If you are a Jew, then you are called to walk with him, as you put it.”
 “Well, yes, but do you really think the God, the God of Abraham, of Isaac and Jacob meant for only us Jews to know him?”
 “Now you are talking foolishness! Our God is only for us. If that were not the case, we would not be hated as God’s Chosen People!”

Together with a charming little boy who grew close to her and willingly talked about his own feelings... This character lightened the many conversations she held as she struggled to learn...

“It is as if I have been walking in my own way and calling it his,” she said before she knew she was speaking.
 “Yep! Gamma always says we should ‘… walk in His way an’ lean not on our own understandin’… but in all our ways acknowledge Him an’ He will make our paths straight.’”
 “You have a wise grandmother.”
“No, Nomi. We have a great God. These aren’t Gamma’s words. They’re his.”

And so it was that Naomi slowly came to know her Messiah...

Such a beautiful, intriguing story!

But Chaz's story was every harder to share. For he had found out he, too, was Jewish and that it had been kept a secret, for his own protection, by his family. How difficult it was to discover such a thing just after he had turned away from his new, beloved wife! His family realized that he could not understand why they had kept his heritage a secret, so they sent him to talk with his uncle...

Interestingly, he was working an archaeological site and this added a certain excitement to the novel...because a new find was made! But the more he learned, the more he knew he had to return to Naomi...for he, too, had found
Him.

“All right, children!” Dorothea raised and lowered her hands. “We begin on the count of three, one, two, and three.” The music began followed by them singing the words,
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God…”
Chaz awoke. “Am I hearing the music and voices of angels?” He glanced around and noticed the children’s blankets had no children in them.
Before he could search for them, they laughingly exclaimed, “No, we are not angels! Come join us. We are at the other side of the water truck. Come. We have roasted marshmallows and are making some s’mores. If you like you can have some.”

This is the most emotional and illustrative of the Biblical scripture studies of the books thus far and certainly provides a learning experience of the potential scripture and guidance that people may need to find the Messiah. They discovered that much was said about Jesus in the Jewish Bible, but had never been explained and taught.

But was their new relationship with God, with The Messiah, enough to bring Naomi and Chaz back together and to return to their home to live? Review of the next book coming tomorrow. This book and the series are highly recommended.
