Some Books Have to be Written - If Only for Revenge... A. K. Kuykendall Writes Horror Story Based Upon Reality

Based upon True Story

Foreword...
I write this for those children harmed, and the adults that used to be those children harmed, at the hands of pedophile priests. Believe me, I know that there are some stories too scary to fathom, too excruciating to ever have experienced, and too horrible for anyone to ever dare seek to give that horror an audience. Yet I dared to write of one such experience in my own visceral way—my writing, the furthest thing from pusillanimous.
My hope is to shine the spotlight on these ongoing atrocities, even as the Vatican continues to spend the wealth they’ve amassed in an attempt to find some semblance of normalcy amongst the chaos—which they themselves caused by wholly ignoring the cries of the babies their priests keep hurting.
My objective was to provide just a bit of relief for those of you who’ve been able to recover from your individual trials and tribulations. For those of you who’ve yet to cope with your own horrid experiences, I hoped to ignite the healing process by first helping you understand the simple truth: this type of evil has existed since the dawn of Man. Sadly, it continues today. It seems the Vatican is unwilling, or unable, to put a stop to it.
Evil like that always lurks in places it shouldn’t, even if not as openly as with the Roman Catholic Church. More importantly, I censure the whole of the Holy See and the central government of the Roman Catholic Church. Child sexual abuse has occurred throughout their existence, and their subsequent cover-ups have been positively shameful.
Still, the truth of these acts became common knowledge in the 20th and 21st centuries. Yes, the proverbial cup finally runneth over.
Now, Catholic priests, nuns, and members of the Roman Catholic Order are being hit with numerous allegations, investigations, trials, and convictions—seems like wall-to-wall coverage at times—and the church is paying billions to settle damning claims around the world.
I felt my own calling in all of this: to shame every one of these pedophile priests, and their perverted crime enablers, in the only way I knew how to do it—speaking truth to power through the art of unhindered storytelling on your behalf.
I hope this peerless message catches fire, one so big their money will not be able to douse its flames.
~ A.K. Kuykendall

At the time of this first of many assaults, I’d been in the midst of giving a confession. I was seven years old, enamored with the teachings of the church, hoping to become the best altar boy I could possibly be. After all, the Holy Name Cathedral stood as a rock in our community, and our family had long worshiped there.
My friends and I, since we could remember, had high aspirations for serving in the church. One-by-one, we achieved our goals. On that blessed day, after we heard Mass and received the sacrament, all our names had been etched into a stone featuring the pulchritude of Saint Tarcisius—the patron saint of altar servers. As with the others, my name bulged on the tablet: Reinhold Commons Webster. Collectively, we were ecstatic.
Though my desire to be closer to the power of God took precedence over all things, I had carved out space for my friends, my love of books and reading, and my odd fascination with bugs. Indeed, I’d hoped to one day be an entomologist.
My parents, however, had different ideas. They wanted me to become a priest someday. They were devout patrons who’d regularly go door-to-door raising money for the church, and this, perhaps, is what routinely caused them to disregard my every impassioned plea.
Shortly after the initial incident, I informed them through a stream of tears and in excruciating detail, what the priest had done to me. Yet when they responded with such disappointment and fury, I immediately recanted my story. My father gave me a severe beating for “the lie.”
At the following Sunday Mass, I was hauled to the front of the cathedral and, in front of all my friends and the entire community, I was shamed not only by both my parents, but also by the very priest who had sexually assaulted me. The community as a whole had put this particular priest on a goddamn pedestal. He had such a hold on the community that, during that Sunday Mass, the assemblage witnessed his flamboyant forgiveness of me.
Furthermore, despite my now-recanted accusation, he refused to remove me as one of the altar boys. Instead, and to further layer his disreputable subterfuge, he informed them that, from that day forward, I was not only going to continue in my role as an altar boy, but that I would serve solely at his side.
This garnered a standing ovation by the congregation.
As the applause roared, I saw the unmistakably doleful glances of my friends and fellow Acolytes, as they stood clean but sullied in their ecclesiastical vestments. We knew the truth in more ways than anyone could fathom. Our collective fear, shame, and guilt had stained our young lives, but we were altogether disquieted at the lack of interest displayed by our families—by anyone that might help us, for that matter.
As if abandoned, we were left at the mercy of the church we were so proud to have grown up in, the church we so enthusiastically wanted to serve as altar boys—the very church in which we suffered our humiliating abuse.
***

They spread the word--red buttons was their warning...Each would know to run and hide. But after the young altar boy had tried to tell his parents, and they had taken him to the altar that next Sunday, in front of the congregation and the very priest who had assaulted him, none of them felt safe and knew there was no hope--from anybody.

Now, he, as well as his best friend, were to be targeted. They were driven away from the church, not knowing where they were going or whether they would return. They arrived at the priest's apartment, after having other priests watch them walk out with their offender and get into the car. All of them had a look in their eyes that only came at certain times--the boys felt it was the evil that came for them...

Christoph died that day and was tossed aside to the floor. I had been forced to watch... And as he climbed on top of me, I whispered, "Lord?" staring at Christoph's body...I was 13 at the time. And had whispered hundreds of prayers to God over the years, just as my friends surely did. Why didn't God help, at least...

My body now numb, I closed my eyes and said, “Lord—”
“Lord?” A voice—deep, slow, and calm—interrupted from in front of me, where Christoph lay dead on the sheets. “Your lord is not going to do anything for you, child. He is too busy sitting on his ass and ignoring the needs of his faithful followers. I will not ignore you, I promise. What you need is someone who will help you now. You need me.”
I opened my eyes and witnessed Christoph lying casually beside me, his head raised and a hand propped up on his chin. I quickly jerked my hand away from him.
“Who are you?”
 “Someone who can give you satisfaction—punish that pedophile. I can make him answer for killing your beloved friend, Christoph...
~~~
As the author said in his Foreword,  he felt a calling to write this short book for those who are suffering, who have suffered...with a hope that they can find solace from the words in this book. In today's world, things like this are becoming more and more public and those guilty are being identified. Money has changed hands in courts. But is that enough to take away the harm that was done to each child?
The horror of the first boy killed expands into a true fight to overcome evil. It is hard to read, yet, somehow mesmerizing as punishment for what has been done is performed.
The battle between good and evil is happening right now... This author has spoken on behalf of the young boys who have used God's church to abuse, with no thought of stopping... Sometimes, supernatural events must handle what many refuse to acknowledge...
I was one of the first readers for Aaron many years ago and have found each book a fantastic adventure. This is the first short with a cultural issue and I must say, I am impressed in his ability to merge facts and fiction to present a horror story that certainly makes us cringe--just as we do every time we hear of a child in the hands of a pedophile...
Given what I have shared and perhaps through other excerpts or reviews, you will know whether you should read this book. I think the best word I can use to describe my own response is--relief--relief that another small child has been saved from the torment of those practicing pedophilia...  You choose on this one, but I do recommend it... It's an important issue we must continue to face! And act to rid it from the world!
A.K. KUYKENDALL was born in Albany, Georgia, but grew up as a military brat on the Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), and later at the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He is married to Magdiel Kuykendall (the love of his life) and, together, they are the proud parents of three sons—Felix, Kal-El, and Jor-El—two of whom are legally named after the Kryptonian House of El due to the author’s affinity for the story of Superman. He’s a corporate executive chef by trade, but his true passion in life is writing thought-
provoking novels that blend the concepts of fact and fiction.
His writing career has been heavily inspired and influenced by Rod Serling and his classic ‘60s television series, The Twilight Zone, and by The Mercury Theatre’s October 30, 1938 broadcast of “The War of the Worlds” over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio. He was then and still is wholly enthralled with the way these two examples showcased ordinary people in extraordinary situations. He especially loved the remarkable plot twists common to The Twilight Zone stories, and the fright manifested by H.G. Wells.
When he’s not writing, he finds comfort in heading out to the golf course with his son and golf partner, Jor-El, where they altogether embarrass themselves on the fairway. He both creates and resides in Ruskin, Florida.
Soon... Soon... A Fascinating Tale of Love...and Madness... by Marc Douglas
When he decided to kill his first wife, it was an epiphany. Not only did he enjoy the act and the anticipation of the action, but the system rewarded him by giving his victim’s assets to him. It made for a totally satisfying experience. With each new prey he encountered, his plan became more precise. However, it was his need for the kill and not money that drove him forward. He had never married a woman with a child before. His hatred of Josh multiplied as the days passed but geometrically increased each time Josh stood up for his mom. The little house was becoming insufferably smaller with no place to hide. To his great anger, he found they still stole hugs wherever and whenever they could, in private, when they thought he would not know, but he knew. He’d get rid of the dog and then the boy. When they were removed he could strip Olivia of all resistance, until she begged for his love and acknowledged his supremacy. Once done, he could move on to his next kill, but first the dog!
"I will not have a dog in this house. They are unclean. It bit me! Furthermore, it’ll tie us down with unneeded responsibility. If you can't take the dog to the pound, I will. The damn thing bit me! I’ll not have that animal in my house!”
I’ll eliminate one problem at a time. After I get rid of the mutt I’ll find a military school to send the kid. Soon. Soon. The very thought of finally having Olivia to himself practically made him drool.
Soon
By Marc Douglas
Only one thing can fight against the mind of a psychopath... The Love of a Child... Josh had once had the perfect family. The love of the two parents and Josh had sustained him for so many years. And when his Dad brought Henry home for his own, he thought life couldn't get any better...
Henry, a black and white mutt, snuggled up to him, sitting on the bed, shoulder to shoulder. He put his nose down and his huge, saucer eyes looked up at him in total adoration. The dog didn’t know what was going on, but knew Josh was scared and so was anxious too. That’s all that mattered to Henry.
His Dad, Alex, had come to a soccer game with a small ball of fur that would become Henry. From the first day, boy and dog were inseparable, but Alex and Olivia weren’t immune to the soft, furry, snuggle machine and the pup soon grew to become the center of the family’s attention. Henry matured into a medium sized dog and tended to be fiercely protective of the family. Although not a large dog, his heart and determination befitted a dog twice his size. At night, Henry slept predominately on Josh’s bed, but would intermittently prowl the house, daring someone to intrude upon his lair. After checking on all three members of his family and trotting throughout the first floor, the dog would finally curl up once again on the bottom of Josh’s bed. However, the slightest noise would cause the cycle to repeat and allowed everyone to sleep more soundly.
 Furthermore, Henry’s persistent and never ending excitement to see any member of his pack made each day a little better. Whenever they entered the house, they were greeted by a furious wagging tail, swiveling hips, and small squeals of contentment that expressed his pleasure at the fact that one more member of his pack had returned home. Henry flipped over on his back and with all four legs in the air, let his lips dangle loosely around his mouth. He had no modesty. Of course, this was his signal that it was time for a long, overdue belly rub.
~~~

Almost three years to the date, his mom
married a man she met during a chance
meeting after the accident. For Olivia, life
had become joyless: she rose in the morning
and walked and lived in shadows. Her
judgment impaired, she was lost in a thick
haze of depression and despair. Days formerly
lived in amazing color were now black and
white, and neither Josh nor Henry could raise
her from the overpowering lethargy that
consumed her every waking moment. It
wasn't her fault. He deceived her. The
monster had hid from her but Josh had seen
him for who he was from the first meeting.
He had tried to warn him mom, but now it
was too late for both of them. The monster
hit, dominated, and intimidated them.
What was worse, he enjoyed it. You could
see it in his eyes. Ah, his eyes...the windows
to a person's soul. The monster's eyes were
were a brilliant blue, but deep set to the point
of being unsettling when you looked at him.
Very few people felt comfortable face-to-face
with Dave. Those blank, disconcerting eyes...
~~~
Even now while he snuggled with Henry, listening to the loud voices, arguing, he knew he could not give up Henry... Not after he'd already lost his Dad!
Josh had always blamed himself for his Dad's death, even though his mother told him it was an accident.  He'd been going out to get him new cleats for his game! And the weather was just too bad and he'd lost control of his car... That was years ago now, but he still missed his father, his real father...
Not the monster who was now legally his stepfather...
By the time his mother realized what kind of man the monster really was, it was already too late. Now all they could do was try to keep each other safe. But now, his stepfather wanted to get rid of Henry!
David Lanter was a lawyer and Olivia had contacted him when the insurance company had declared a loophole in receiving the benefits after Alex's death. Fortunately, David was able to help her through this, but it allowed him to form an attachment which he then pursued...the chase was on...soon...
David was somewhat aware of a dark side; he even called him Dave. But most of the time, Dave was only in control for short times, especially when David wanted to be free... He even had a place for Dave...
Snake Mountain Caves
So while he was courting Olivia, he kept tight control and spent considerable time with her, taking her to nice places and showing her how pleasant he could be. Soon Olivia began to trust him and then care for him...But after they were married, he wanted to begin his fun with Olivia... either Josh or Henry was always in the way!
Josh looked down in panic at the
twitching body of his stepfather...
the monster, writhing in pain. Dave
had the appearance of a wounded
snake and Josh didn't want to see if
that snake had fangs The bat knocked
wind out of the monster. He could
hardly breathe. Unearthly noises
came out of its mouth as it fought
to gasp for air that wouldn't come.
Its eyes were wild with rage as it
focused on Josh through a veil of
pain, furious at being resisted,
turning at being ambushed.
!!!
Barely a week had gone by after the wedding before the beatings started. Josh had stepped up to protect his mother during the first incident and Dave went berserk. Only through Henry's intervention, when he bit the monster, were Josh and his mother saved from serious injury.
Now he heard footsteps coming up the steps, coming for his dog. He had to save him and even though he was as large as most adults, he was no match for the monster. He hung his head in frustration…his hands found a grip on the bat. The steps continued and curiously halted for a moment just outside the door. The door knob jiggled back and forth. As Josh watched in horror, the door imploded, carrying much of the frame with it into the bedroom.
In some strange way, the splintered wood flew in slow motion through the air as though the adrenalin in Josh’s body refused to allow it to be seen in real time. The monster flew, enraged, through the debris of the broken door directly for Henry where he lay on the bed. Dave never saw the Louisville Slugger as it exploded into his abdomen but he heard a few of his lower ribs crack when the wooden bat settled home.
Josh had no choice...he ran for his life...to the school where he thought he could find a place to hide. By that time Dave was following him wildly and skidded in near a fence almost touching Josh. Then a cop car came flying in also... Josh thought he was safe, but as soon as the officer realized who he was--a prominent lawyer, who contributed generously to the policeman's fund, he backed off and put out an alert for Josh, having heard he was on drugs and had hit his mother!
Fortunately, Josh knew just one individual who lived nearby. Macy, a girl in school for whom he really cared, even though they'd not talked personally. Would she help him? Yes, she welcomed him into their home...but that only made things worse...
David was completely gone and Dave was in control and he was on the hunt...
Snake Mountain Caves
Don’t kill them yet, soon, soon I’ll have such fun. Patience…soon.
If the balance of a man's mind is based upon his being able to be in control.=, then when David chose to free Dave, he would have the fun he wanted to have. But when Josh and Henry and even Olivia began to fight back, the rage consumed David... Until Dave had total control...
Then the surprise ending really blew my mind!
Can love conquer all? Perhaps not, but it can be a deadly enemy to a monster! This is not a slasher movie, although there is similar violence, but Douglas has tempered the violence with a strong counterbalance, a psychopath who is exposed to a family atmosphere where great love resides...
Indeed, Douglas' books do make you think! Soon is horrible, but provocative. Deadly but filled with deep and abiding love and caring... A contradiction that makes for a really great story...  And definitely has the feel of Dean Koontz's best-sellers! Do check it out!
GMO Killerz by Rick Carufel Surprised Me With Story Twist With Great Crazy Character...
"Myron did not intend to murder his wife when he sat down to dinner.   Lucille had made one of his favorite dishes, spaghetti and meatballs with her wonderful, made-from-scratch pasta sauce.   The thought never crossed his mind.   He loved his wife and had been happily married for twenty-nine years. They had two great kids, who were away at college, and were planning their dream vacation to Maui. The problem was the TV.   "There was one particular telemarketer for some sort of cookware who was, Myron thought, from Australia.   He had a very annoying accent, and his way of pronouncing his E's as I's was particularly grating on Myron's nerves.   This commercial ran constantly and it was not unusual for the same advertisement to play over and over during a single show.   It was when this intrusive telemarketer, with his annoying accent, said 'iggs' instead of 'eggs' that it finally got to Myron in some inexplicable way and caused the problem.
"Myron and Lucille were eating in front of the TV, as was their custom, and the commercial came on.   Myron tried to brace himself for the sound of the dreaded 'iggs' but all he could do was tremble.   Over the past few days this commercial had, for some unknown reason, caused Myron to react violently to the sound of that particular word and each time the word had been spoken, Myron felt his control slipping away.
"'Iggs' was spoken four times during the course of the commercial and with each utterance the pressure within Myron began to build.   He felt that if he heard 'iggs' one more time, his brain would explode. Upon the first voicing, Myron began to shake violently.   On the second, he began to have some sort of seizure.   By the third, Myron was bleeding from the nose and ears, his head rolling back and forth on the headrest of his Lazy-boy while he moaned softly, "No.... no..."
"With the fourth and final verbalization, Myron was quiet, seeming to have regained his composure, much to the relief of Lucille who had been sitting in her Lazy-boy, agog at Myron's display, a forkful of meatball halfway to her mouth.
"Honey! Are you all right?" asked Lucille.
"I'm fine, dear," replied Myron as he rose from his chair and moved towards his wife.   In one fluid motion, he grasped his wife's mid-way-to-the-mouth hand with the forkful of meatball and rammed it into her forehead, deep enough to pierce the skull.   He then picked up her steak knife...
GMO Killerz
By Rick Carufel
H. G. Well was one of the forerunners in placing genetics modification into a horror novel. Surely you've seen or read his novel which included an island where Dr. Moreau "experimented..." Well, as I was reading GMO Killerz, that was the story that came to mind, only this time it was Dr. Lev Nieman who was leading a team...
Although Dr. Lev Neiman works for the
 Satanos Corporation, a multinational
 GMO conglomerate that makes the most
 deadly poisons on the planet,
he is first an agent of the Israeli
 government.   He was recruited as a teen
 and the Israelis paid for his education in
 genetic engineering.   Sent to America,
 he studied at M.I.T.   Before graduating
 with honors, he had been recruited by
 Satanos, which was exactly what his
 handlers in Israel wanted.   He is now a
 lead researcher at the Satanos facility,
 east of Morehead, Minnesota.
~~~

And, of course, the research had gone quite far in the desire to manipulate others to do what they are told! Dr. Nieman had progressed to the point that he was able to introduce strands of DNA into an individual who could, upon command of a

"But many things go on here that few know about
 beyond the actual research teams.   One particularly
 secretive team is led by Dr. Neiman.
"His team has gone beyond the manipulation of the
 physical  form and delves into the manipulation
 of organisms through the use of programmable
 DNA chains.   Lev and his masters in Israeli
intelligence want to be able to manipulate the
 actions and behavior of organisms on their cue.
They basically want, with the introduction
of chemical agents into certain segments of
 populations, to absolutely control them.
"Animal tests have been less than rewarding.
  Mostly the animals, even chimps, don't have
 the cognitive ability to exhibit changes in the
mental makeup beyond behavioral changes,
 usually of the extremely violent kind.
So Neiman and his team have resorted to
 testing human subjects.   These are mostly
volunteers who have answered ads in the
newspapers for subjects to participate in a study
 in behavioral modifications.
"Although Satanos
 has no qualms about creating genetic monsters
 in the name of research, they are sticklers when it
 comes to human testing.
~~~
"Key word" be forced to do anything that he had earlier been told to do--specifically, to Kill...
That wasn't hard to guess, was it, given the title of the book. So plan to witness quite a lot of gratuitous violence, not only uncalled for, but sometimes regretted by the individual involved. On the other hand, this isn't a pure slasher story with a horrible creature that comes out of dreams or hides behind a mask. These are people like you or I who happens to have...met... Dr. Nieman!
Soon, Nieman has a "gang" of volunteers just waiting around for the next assignment. After all, if you tell them to forget, an individual doesn't have much to get "back to..."
Now the interesting twist is that one of his research volunteers already had behavioral modification issues... in fact, Nieman realized that about 13% of those receiving the extra DNA strands were not responding as expected.
Take a look at the young lady on the right of the book cover! Dangerous?! You bet! But she was NOT controlled by the good Dr. Nieman...
Police haven't a clue, right? Jimmy and Oly--yep, Jimmy plays a little of "Laurel and Hardy" in between trying to figure out what is going on! And they do begin to discover, for instance, about the extra DNA... But it's just not enough...
In the meantime, Marissa, the little doll who was "affected" differently, is on her way to find the guy who tried to get her to kill her mother--which she did not... And she's picking up some helpers along the way!
And, oh yeah... Dr. Nieman's thinking is being affected by all the control he's got in his hands...
I don't know why, but once Marissa was introduced, I started to find this horror novel humorous! The characters are perfect, the writing and story so fluently presented that you begin to imagine all the possibilities! In fact, although I am not sure, but the ending could be taken as a set up for a sequel... Myself? I was surprised by the quality of the book. The cover appeared a little overdone when I first saw it, but it really is perfect for the story! In fact, I enjoyed Marissa so much that this reader who is not an avid horror fan, would enjoy seeing what happens to her...Think "Kill Bill" for this young lady who kept me "laughing" in this "explicit" horror story... Go figure!
I was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island in 1951. I have lived in California, Oregon, Arizona and Hawaii, I now live in Minnesota. I originally started out as a commercial artist and worked in many tourist areas over the years selling art. I started reading Sci-Fi and Horror by the late 50s and loved it. Over the years I have toyed with the idea of writing but never had the time until I started having serious back problems. With a few visits to the doctor and a MRI it was found that I had broken my back some time in the past and have degenerative joint and disc disease. So I became disabled. Now I had the time to write. I began writing in 2002 and have been writing even since.
Darcia Helle's Novel, Killing Instinct, Not for Squeamish But Excellent Story of Revenge and Justice...Haunting Characters Indeed!
"Sean glanced over at the workbench with what looked like longing in his eyes. Then he told Michael what
Jake had requested. Slow torture. Lots of suffering. Photos. Audio recording. Video.
"Audio and video?" Michael repeated in disbelief. "He wanted you to record the torture?"
"As unbelievable as that sounds." Sean said. "He wanted shots of her suffering. Close-ups of the wounds.
Essentially, a snuff film without the sexual content.
"Okay, that's beyond twisted. Did he say why he wanted these extras? Or why he wanted her to suffer?"
"...Sean got up, picked a screwdriver off the workbench and tapped it against his thigh....She's at my house."
"Who is?"
"Maria. The woman I was supposed to kill."
Violence In FictionI write suspense. Topics I’ve covered include domestic abuse, religious cults and hired killers. The nature of my chosen genre requires a certain level of detail to the violent scenes. But how much is too much?No doubt, if I asked ten people this question, I’d get at least five different answers. Each of us has our own limit, and tolerance varies widely. Maybe a better question would be, how much is enough? Read more...
Killing Instinct:
A Michael Sykora Novel
By Darcia Helle
If you get queasy when reading some scenes of murder,
please know that this is a graphic violent novel. I have
linked you to an article by the author so that you can learn
about her issues in writing her novels.
I admit I got squeamish at some of the scenes. so, frankly, I went looking on her site to see if there was anything related to the inclusion of torture details... I must say that I understood what she meant about the characters driving the acts, and It was persuasive for me, so much so that I wanted to read the first two books in the Michael Sykora series, so quickly downloaded copies for some weekend reading...
"William nodded as he passed, turning left only the
wide hallway leading toward the holding area. Jake
would have been spending his time in one of the many
soundproofed seven-by-five cells they'd built on this
wing. They housed all their stock separately. The
isolation kept them more manageable. Compliant.
Desperate. Terrified.
"Stock. That's how he thought of them. Merchandise.
Inventory. Their humanity rarely entered his mind.
"Jake had been brought to the intake room on the
near end of the holding area. Adam, one of their
long-time and most trusted employees, stood outside
the door. He straightened slightly when he spotted
William. "Hey, Boss," he said. "Lenny's inside with
the prey. Jake."
"William almost corrected Adam's choice of nouns.
Prey irritated him. The word sounded vulgar, somehow.
Made him think of pedophiles, which he serviced but
didn't want to associate himself with. He was aware,
though, that most of the men working the factory
referred to their stock this way. And this wasn't the
time to make a stand on that issue. He'd mention it to
Lenny. Dealing with the help wasn't his job.
"Adam pushed the door open and William stepped into
the room. The first thing he noticed was the repugnant
smell of fear. Hot and sour, it made William recoil
slightly..."
~~~
I liked the cover. No pictures could portray "killing instinct" anyway, right? Yet there were four male lead characters who could be classified as having that Instinct (many more, in fact) and Darcia Helle did an excellent job in creating the psychological background so that readers can quickly understand exactly what type of individual these four men are.

Michael Sykora, the lead character, got involved after his fiancee was murdered. All he was able to feel for any type of justice was through revenge...

He took it...

And now he is in the business of helping others when someone they love have been brutalized or murdered...

He's very good at it...

So is Sean, his partner. He was an assassin who somehow got hooked up with Michael (haven't read the how of that yet--LOL). But as you will see from the narrative, Michael has been influential in teaching Sean to first stop to think about what he's being asked to do. Especially for Maria. He fell for her immediately, but it was more than that... He could not grasp a need to torture and film somebody unless...

Yes, the man who wanted her dead wanted to have a snuff film for his vast collection and, of course, to sell as well... This man is the Sandman...

He's runs a business something like Fantasy Island--except it relates to providing the "right individual" for what your fantasy is... And that leads to the fourth man, Lenny, who, like William, considers those individual his livestock...he's in it for the money and has no feelings for that stock as people for whom he should care...

Since Sean had saved Maria rather than killing her, as soon as he had shared what had been planned for her, she wanted to be involved. She had been a bounty hunter and worked security, so was well prepared.

Michael was now involved with Nicky. While she didn't have the same background and training, after meeting Maria and learning about what these men were doing, she demanded to be involved too. Michael was afraid, given his major loss in the past, but Nicky wouldn't back down. So all of them were involved, trying to track down who the Sandman was, why he wanted Marie dead, and then as the two groups knew about each other, a friend of Marie's who worked for the bounty hunting office, was taken...and tortured... Michael and Sean gambled that they would not really harm her, pending a potential trade for Marie...or at a minimum, adding her to the stock--after all, anybody still alive can help fulfill "somebody's" fantasy...

I don't know about you, but given the "real" atrocities that happen every day in America--murder, kidnapping, human trafficing, rape--it has become more acceptable to read about vigilantes, revenge and justice (payback).
If the government and law enforcement cannot take the real criminals off the streets, would we be happy to encourage men like Michael and Sean to act? It's a scary thought...

And too easy to understand...

Darcia Helle writes to entertain us...
But she also says the characters await us...
Murder as Entertainment. I write about murder - gruesome murder, bizarre murder, murder for hire and murder as revenge. What I write is fiction. Mine is a make-believe world of murder as entertainment.
I'd like to take a noble stance and say that I don't enjoy writing the murder scenes. But I do. That's creepy to admit out loud, I know. I kill people on paper and I like it. How did this happen?
The truly odd thing is that I am a total pacifist. I even feel bad when I kill a mosquito and I despise mosquitoes. So why is it that I enjoying writing murder scenes? Read more...
I liked the fact that she provides info on her "gruesome" writing. LOL! And I have to say that her characters and their actions were sometimes edgier than I could handle--so I read those parts quickly, but those needles stuck in my mind through the night...excuse the pun...Funny how one scene bothered me, but when it was the man getting the needles, it didn't...hmmm...

"The room was in shadows, and Michael didn't want to direct his flashlight in their faces. He heard soft murmurs and what sounded like sniffles. "Is someone crying?"
"Maria"
"Why?"
"She's been reading about that that psychiatrist did..."
"Dr. Eric Wilkinson needs to pay for what he did."
"She stared straight at Sean when she said this. Something invisible passed between them, an unspoken understanding. Sean nodded and said, "Consider it done."

Obviously if I went out and got the first two books in this series, I "got past" the fictional torture. But what sold me was the ending. When it comes right down to it, I'm willing to agree, at least in fiction, it is not just black and white...There's an awfully lot of gray, isn't there? I think the author did an exceptional job in working within the gray area and even coming out white in some ways... I know what I mean by that--I hope you do too...

Highly recommended.

Cover of "God Told Me To"

"Carrie looked.
"It was red faced, ugly, its head smooshed on one side, white hair covering its forehead and shoulders, a blister on its puckered asshole of a mouth, tiny veins visible under its thin, pale skin and Carrie had been
horrified.
"Ugh, what's wrong with it? Get
it away from me!"

The Devil Stood Up

By Christine Dougherty

While I was without a Kindle, I received requests that I couldn't deal with--this was one of them. Interestingly, I had recently received another request from a writer who had the big D as a primary character and I chose not to read it. This one has been out a year, so, still catching up with e-books, I read this novel...

Wow! I am so thankful I did! I use the word "astounding" to explain my "wonder" and amazement of this story. Christine Dougherty has blasted us--all we who are human, LOL--with blunt reality and points the finger right back at us! WE have free will... So don't hide behind that old mantra, "the devil made me do it..." or even  (in my words), "God told me to..." Interestingly, this phrase brought up a book reference! For those who claim this, including suicide bombers, the criminally insane, and even other religious fanatics, Dougherty throws back...YOU decided, YOU are the one with free will...

Brave young writer, isn't she?!!!

Whether you believe in God, the Devil, or not, Dougherty looks into our eyes and tells us, we are the ones who choose to do right or wrong... I loved her message!

"The Devil rolled over, swiping a knotted forearm
across his dripping brow. Half asleep, struggling,
uncomfortable, The Litany of the evils of the
world slipped through his unconsciousness like
fine wisps of acrid smoke, intertwining, interweaving,
noxious, and necessary.
"This is how he thought of the million threads of
evil that bound his mind, they were: The Litany.
"The evil of the world spiked sharply, spoiling his
sleep, but he could not stop it any more than he
could have stopped time or stopped the evil itself.
He rolled, almost coming awake, flirting with full
consciousness, and then settled as the streaming
evil flatlined, becoming bearable again.
"This body, even, was uncomfortable: difficult to
position with grace and never entirely at rest, not
really. He'd never gotten used to it, never become
accustomed to losing grace. The weight, the stink
and yes, even the sight of it was unbearable,
because in Heaven, there'd been no ugliness, no
stink, no uncomfortable body, only awareness
and beauty.
"The Devil had never been a human, but knew
them well enough by now to this that this must
be what if felt like, to be in a body. Heavy.
Tethered. Stinking...
"...He punished one no harder than the others.
His place was not that of judgment. Only to
punish and punish and punish, until God
Himself saw fit to take this job from him, and
lift him back, weightless, bodyless to heaven
and to grace..."

Now, at first, I wasn't totally willing to accept the story line. As I thought about it, however, Lucifer was an angel at first, but he sinned, according to historical accounts. He thought he was above God...

But did that mean he would always be in direct opposition to God's will? While you explore that thought, let me tell you just a little about this exciting drama...

I've never been able to say the name without cringing, so I'm going to just say The D... OK? Anyway, the D calls it a litany--each and every day, every single thing that WE decide to do that we know (or don't know) is wrong, falls on him...I'll let you read the description but essentially he's lying down, bloodied, horribly affected by each and every sin/wrong that humans commit!

If some of you say, Cool!, you need to read this book...sure, it's a horror novel in description and tone, but, believe me, there's lots more going on in this drama and a message that will force each of us to take notice and acknowledge, yes, acknowledge that all that we do is through Free Will...

But, one day, something horrible happens and the D has reached his boiling point, literally. He painfully forces himself from underneath all of the piles of hateful emotions and screams! Not This Time!

The majority of us are selfish people, at least sometimes--we choose what we do every second, every minute...so when a your man who had chosen to become a drug addict chose to commit suicide, the D was there to step into his body!

But that young man had a sister. And she had been there when he jumped...

And also saw him, get up, brush himself off, and walk away!

She followed the Devil...

Carrie Walsh is the human who brought the Devil...and her lawyer who got her off for killing her child. Sound like something out of our headlines? You bet! One excerpt I read said this book looked at good and evil... Indeed I've said that often myself in reviews...

But this book, I think, really should be taken much more personally... I've always used "Know Thyself" to consider what I do in life. My opinion is that Dougherty is saying the same thing. We all have the potential for good or evil inside of us...you know, those seven deadly sins that one movie covered...or all the other small things we choose to do that, really, normally evolve around selfishness, self-centeredness, pride, fear and doubt, etc...

While I might have spent time getting to know myself, still I was confronted! But this wasn't horror or hard for me to do. And, if you have never really tried to look at yourself objectively, I suggest you begin... This book may just be the one to help you as you decide whether to choose drugs, alcoholic or other substances that give some type of escape... Drug cartels choose to sell because millions all over the world choose to buy. Their reason is simple--greed.  A suicide bomber is "influenced" to kill himself because of the story there are "virgins" waiting... Get real! When I choose a doughnut, it was my choice, not the D... No difference!

This book needs to be read by all. Do you dare to find out that you can't blame...the Devil...Yes, A Must-Read recommendation from me.
