To The Breaking Pointe, Second in First Force Series, Takes Readers to Russian Ballet's Darker Side...

Yekaterinburg, Russia...     Easing her sore, aching, and abraded feet into a tub of hot water, Silja (Sil-ya) Ramsay [played by Kristina Shapran] let out a gratifying groan. She laid her head against the sofa, allowing the Epsom salts to soothe the pain from the bloody welts on her toes. The toenail on her left big toe was discolored and cracked. Yuck!
For the past five weeks, she'd danced the principle role of Swan Hilda in the ballet, Coppelia. The ballet told the enchanting story of an old inventor named Dr. Coppelius who has created a lovely, life-size doll named Coppelia. He displays his exquisite invention on the balcony of his shop, intriguing all the townspeople. They try and try to get Coppelia's attention to no avail...

Although the muscles in her body begged for mercy and her feet felt as though they would fall off, she wasn't complaining. She was living her dream of being the principal ballerina for a small yet prominent ballet company. She'd left everything behind even the man she loved, to follow her dream. Oftentimes she had regrets, but not tonight. Oh no, tonight her performance had been flawless, bringing the audience to their feet for three curtain calls!

Anna Pavlova and
Novikoff in 1911
Closing her eyes, Silja's lips curled up in bittersweet contemplation. She missed her home in the United States, and she missed Grant. It was so long ago, why did he even seep into her mind anymore? It had been five years since she had seen him and only a few emails were exchanged each year. He had his life, and she had hers, period. End of story. Leave it be. Gawd, Silja, he's probably with someone else. Silja had come to Russia five years previously to dance with the Novikov Ballet Company.

Even though she was born in Russia, she'd been raised in the United States after being adopted by an American couple, the Ramsays, twenty-five years ago. Her adoptive parents were wonderful. She was provided with a loving home. When Silja fell in love with ballet, her adoptive mother saw to it that she had the very best instruction. Her eyes welled with tears. She so wished that her parents could have seen her tonight. Then again, she had longed for that on so many nights. She missed them desperately. A car accident had claimed them several years ago. When the opportunity presented itself to audition for the Novikov, Silja knew that this is what her mother would have wanted.

Grant encouraged her to follow her dreams. He was a gentleman. He loved her, but, mostly, Grant was a selfless man. She could still remember his words to her when he had left her at the airport. He brushed a stray hair from her cheek, kissed her lips, and whispered, "I'm so proud of you, Sil. I know you'll be great." His eyes were shadowed with sadness, but his words were genuine. He turned and hurried away.

To The Breaking Pointe:
First Force Series
By Cindy McDonald

I was so happy to see that McDonald had used her background expertise of being a professional dancer/choreographer, in her new career of writing fiction! It is a beautiful merge of those years of performance with her latest activities as a writer. Using that merge has taken us to Moscow into the world of dance...but to the seamier side of it! Actually, this also results in a successful merge of romantic suspense with the thriller genre that she's now doing! I loved this one!

At least they were both young at the time that Silja and Grant, played by Stuart Tomlinson, had separated so that Silja could accept the position of a lifetime for her career--joining a small but prominent ballet company in Russia. The only thing was that neither of them had ever stopped loving the other... And that left both missing what had been a very important part of their lives. After 5 years, those feelings had never disappeared...

Back in Malibu, California, First Force was in the midst of an involuntary rescue of the daughter of their Columbia client, who was now living with the director and starring in porn films. (By the way, please check out my previous review on the debut novel to learn more about this group.)

Jack Haliday who was the main character in the last book has joined First Force and has also moved into the central safe house since his home had been burned. Grant Ketchum and Dan Garrison were also on the mission and since Ms. Salazar was fighting the group all of the way during their escape, they were quite relieved to have this job finished!

While Anita had been at the safe house with Dr. Rayne checking her out physically, they had an interesting little exchange about how Jack seemed to be interested in Rayne...Ahhh! I'm enjoying this interplay...LOL

High up on her tippy toes with her arms over her head, she bourreed across the kitchen to where her father had taken his seat. "Look, Daddy! Look at my ballerina outfit! I'm gonna start ballerina lessons this week!" the child joyfully announced.
"Whoa, that was a quick change," Jack pointed out with a chuckle. The room was filled with ooohs and awes. The curls on her head whipped about as she twirled while watching the sequins on the tutu catch the light. Her innocent joy was simply infectious.
Wearing an ear-to-ear grin across his bristly face, Jack clapped his hands. "That's fantastic, baby! You look beautiful!
Whirling around, Lil bumped into Grant's chair. He grabbed her arm before she tumbled to the floor. The little girl gazed up at him with wide eyes. She asked, "I'll have to practice more before I can be a real ballerina, isn't that right, Mr. Grant?"
He smiled and swallowed hard. "I think you'll make one of the prettiest ballerinas I've every seen..."
Grant couldn't help but think how all little girls dream of becoming a ballerina. At one time he was so very much in love with one such girl who made that very dream into a reality. Silja Ramsey--Sil...
~~~
Was it having seen Lil in her tutu that made Grant on edge, thinking to contact Sil, wondering how she was, dreaming of her each night? He couldn't get a bad feeling out of his head and couldn't let go of the worry he was feeling... Or was it that he could feel Sil's thoughts about him, especially when it became even more and more dangerous for her?
Walt had already expressed concern that he seemed to lack the attention needed for doing the job and they were in the midst of, actually, heading for another job somewhere in Russia, but Grant finally admitted to himself and to Walt that he had to go find Silja...
With her parents killed in the accident, Sil was totally alone, except for the people with whom she worked. She had become principal dancer quite some time ago. Even though she considered herself Russian, once she had moved to America, all of the company really considered her American...and they kept her out of what was happening, until...
Due to the lack of funds to keep the ballet company going, the owner and manager had slowly evolved into a series of parties during which rich patrons would "contribute" by buying an evening with one of the dancers. Then those individuals began to demand more during their evenings... Some of the females, especially one who had just joined the company, was hurt badly, including raped...
Silja was kept out of those parties, but one of the most richest of the patrons had become obsessed with Silja. He had tried to present her with presents, flowers, all of which had been returned. The manager had tried to talk Silja into at least being sociable to him, hoping that a spark would develop, which it ultimately did...
But it was about that same time that she learned from her best friend and fellow dancer what actually happened at those parties. Silja was incensed and felt she had to do something. They later placed one of her slippers into the box which was used for the patron drawing... Silja hid until her slipper was drawn--by the very man who had physically abused the young girl, and others! Silja spoke out and threatened to tell the police...
Instead she was overpowered by the man, which drew the attention of her stalker and Silja found herself being dragged out of the room! She was being kidnapped! And the man who had bought her for the night had been killed!
Silja was wanted for murder! Her only hope was that her one-word message to Grant had gone through when she'd still had access to her cell phone...
Silja: HELP!
Grant parked the SUV along the street about a block away from the studio. While he trekked among the Russian citizens huddled in their coats against the ice-edge breeze, Grant realized that they peered at his skeptically from behind the scarves wrapped around their faces. Some made a wide breadth to avoid him completely...
The Americans and Russians have always been wary of one another--it had been ingrained in both peoples' minds from the time they were children. Yeah, it was obvious that the cold war was still being silently fought.
Finally, he came upon the building that housed the Novikov Ballet Company. A slight built woman was peering in the windows. She wore a long wool coat, boots, a knit hat pulled down over her ears...
"You are American soldier, yes?"
Grant smiled politely. "Something like that. Is there anyone here?"
"No. The dancers are on two-week rest. Who do you search for?"
"I'm looking for Silja Ramsay. Do you know her?"
"Perhaps. Who are you?"
"I'm an old friend."
Eleni smiled. "Yes, I recognize you now. I have seen picture of you in Silja's apartment. You are Grant...I am frightened for her..."
~~~

Walt had immediately showed the type of man he was by telling Grant to go and treat it as a mission, which meant that he would have both financial and staff support. The team itself would join him after they finished their first job. But Grant had met Eleni Babinski, Silja's best friend when he had gone looking for her and she recognized him and immediately agreed to help, explaining about what had been happening with the patrons and dancers and that she had planned to go to the police, but had been taken instead...

You know, you would think that the man who had physically abused the young girl would have been the villain but he was nothing compared to the man who had chosen that Silja would become his possession--yes, he was all charm while he had courted her, but, now...

Whew, I was sure glad that Silja had somebody who loved her completely and was also prepared, through his training in First Force and earlier, to find her and take her home. But, believe me, with what had already happened and started to increase, readers will be hanging in suspense from the moment Grant hits the ground in Russia!

Would the two
beautiful
ballerinas
ever get the
chance to
meet
and share their
love of dance?!!!

Music, Mystery, and Separated Lovers brings readers a really fascinating treat! I can't decide which of the books I enjoyed the most--fortunately, I don't have to choose! And I'm already looking forward to In the Dark coming in 2015! The author included an excerpt in the back for enticing readers... all I saw was Dr. Rayne Lee's name and I stopped! I knew I wanted to know her personal story! Don't you?!!!

Love this series...Check it out and know that I'm recommending both books written thus far and the next as well. This is an author to watch!

A Tricky Game Pulls Readers Into... Whatever Game That's Being Played! Read Seraphima Bogomolova...

Ritz-Carlton, Moscow
"Each player must accept the cards life deals him or her: but once they are in hand, he or she alone must decide how to play the cards in order to win the game."   Voltaire

"Tearing out of the night, a silver Bentley whizzes along the curb and stops before the 911 Aurora club on Petrovka Street. Out onto the glistening asphalt steps a woman. Her heeled shoes rhythmically clicking, she walks to the club entrance.
"At the door, a smiling crimson-lipped hostess welcomes her in. She enters the club: the insistent beats of music crescendos slam her body with their feverish vibes. Through the crowd of raving clubbers and dancing strippers, she walks toward a man seated at the table by the stage. Drawing on his cigar, he watches the sultry movements of a dancer wrapping her smooth tanned body around the cold metal of the pole.
"Approaching, she stops, her eyes fastened on the man's profile. Instantaneously sensing her presence, he turns round catching her blue gaze. Her hand extended to him, he grabs it and, parting his lips, impresses them on it, leaving a flaming trail on her skin. She pulls it away.
"He looks up at her. "Are you playing with me?”
“I think you enjoy being played with."
"It depends." "On what?" "On the game."
"She sits down. His eyes on her mouth, the man watches her light up a cigarillo, her slightly trembling rouge lips encircled around its chocolate tip. She draws on it, releasing a blow of smoke toward him. He turns away, motioning at a waitress. Swiftly, a bottle of Krug arrives, placed in between them on the table. He picks the bottle up and pours champagne into their glasses.
"To our agreement."
"As you wish."
"Do you think it really matters what I wish?"
"It depends."
"On what?"
"On your wish." Leaning forward, the man brings his glass to hers. The crystal sides of their glasses meet for a split of a second, releasing a gentle clink. She takes a sip from hers then puts it back onto the table.
"It's late. I have to go."
"Please stay."
"Are you tempting me?"
"No, I'm indulging you."
" She stands up. Grabbing her hand, he pulls her toward him. Her body tenses slightly. He tightens his grip, enjoying the sensation it produces then lets her go. "She walks away. He follows her with his eyes until she disappears out of his site, engulfed by the crowd of the club revellers...
"...her silver Bentley softly pulls in before an imposing residential building, its modern grandeur shamelessly overshadowing the traditional facade of the Church of St. George Neokesariyskii, tucked away in a small garden next to it. She steps out. The watchful stare of her driver on her, engulfed in silence of the night, she slowly walks up the brightly lit stairway of the house. Lancing the silence, a gunshot shatters the night. She gasps. Blood quickly soaking the sleeve of her coat drips into the sparkling white snow.

A Tricky Game
Seraphima Bogomolova

It was exciting for me to immediately be caught in this new novel, first because it is in third person. I always feel that it allows readers to sink in quickly and follow the action... without disruption...

Thereafter it was the quick dialogue sentences... For me, I immediately began to formulate a vision of this sophisticated leading lady as her characteristics were formed by her actions. An articulate lady of poise, mystery, and intrigue...

Next I was struck by the lead-ins that kept me following along after this woman--"Shot" was the lead-in for the excerpt above...Then "Visitor"... She had me and I read the book in one sitting, except of course to grab a cup of tea about 11 PM last night...

This was in addition to a quote about games that was displayed on a single page to begin each chapter!

I was enthralled with the writer by that time! In these days writers are trying out many things. This writer, I felt, followed the basic rules to move the story forward with every word. She used the traditional third person, but then she added these few distinctive cues that kept me on my toes! What was going to happen! And it is only very late in the game that you will begin to see it, watch for it...look forward to it!

Jacques Moreaux, Angela's grandfather, gets involved, trying to protect her by calling in some help, but at least one gets a little over-zealous and winds up dead... Because we're dealing with the potential of a lot of money! Kazimir Stankevitch, in addition to "other things" wants Angela to negotiate or otherwise obtain for him 51% of Bioyl Investments which is presently owned by Dmitry Voronov, a well-known billionaire.  Angela is an expert in stock market manipulation and is quite capable of making that happen!

The game is on...

But each individual must decide what game is being played! It's dangerous to even be considering such a transaction through some type of manipulation. Is Angela able to play that game and win? Is she willing to enter a transaction with Kazimir, knowing what could happen afterward? Her grandfather obviously is in fear for her life.

But Angela is playing...for keeps...

'Not long ago, in a charming dream,
I saw myself - a king with crown's treasure,
 I was in love with you, it seemed,
And heart was beating with a pleasure'.
~~~
Oh, I must include the fun places that readers will be exposed to following Angela! The best, in my opinion, was her attendance at masquerades! In fact, that's another extra touch that the author provides--she gives location settings and even links to places, such as Venice where those balls take place!
And Angela receives mysterious gifts, kisses from a masked man...who writes poetry...
Readers will also be provided some historical background on the visited places in Moscow, St. Petersburg and more...
"It's not so important who starts the game but who finishes it." is the quote starting the last chapter. So, how does the game end? It's a fantastic ending in my opinion! Highly recommended!
It's a masquerade, a love parade
So, won't you stay and dance with me?
"Masquerade", Backstreet Boys
A Little More History...
"In my opinion, the Konstantinovsky Palace is the best place to have it."
"I wholeheartedly agree with you, Nina Alekseevna." Entering the Blue Hall, they come over to the floor-to-ceiling windows and look out onto the landscaped park ensemble, spreading all way to the shore of the Finnish Gulf.
“Do you know that Peter the Great thought to make the Palace a 'Russian Versailles'?
"Nina Alekseevna, I thought Peterhof Palace was more like it."
"Yes, but that's only because during the construction of the Konstantinovsky Palace it became apparent that it was ill adapted for installation of fountains, so Peter focused his attention on Peterhof Palace instead."
"What were the original designs for the Palace like?"
"The original designs, drawn by the French architect Jean Baptiste Le Blonde, depicted the Palace as a Chateau d'Eau, situated on a round island."
"Imagine that!"
"Yes, but unfortunately, the architect's death prevented him from completing his elaborate project. Instead, in 1718 a temporary wooden palace was constructed, which was mostly used by the Russian royalty as a sort of hunting lodge."
"When was The Palace completed?"
 "It was completed only in 1807, when it came into the possession of Romanov family. The Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich, the younger brother of Alexander I, devoted a great deal of attention to his residence."
"So, the current look of The Palace is a legacy of The Grand Duke Konstantin?"
"Yes, Konstantin Nikolaevich, though, the son of the Nicolas I. He is the one, who undertook the reconstruction of The Palace and its park ensemble, including the central rooms."
"The Blue and Marble Halls?"
"Yes, the central rooms were redecorated in accordance with a project drawn up by the architect Andrei Stakenschneider and given the current names: The Blue and The Mable Halls.
"Thank you, Nina Alekseevna." "My pleasure, Angela.
Please Welcome Character Aleksandr Talanov to BRH!
Inspired by the actual KGB informant who leaked word out of Moscow that James was on a KGB watchlist, former KGB informant, Aleksandr Talanov has become James Houston Turner's signature protagonist in the Talanov Thriller Series. He made his debut in Comfort Publishing's 2011 bestseller, Department Thirteen.
TALANOV PROFILE
STATS:
NAME: Aleksandr "Alex" Mikhailevich Talanov
KGB RANK: ColonelDATE OF BIRTH: February 04, 1958
HEIGHT: 6'1" (185.42cm)WEIGHT: 172 lbs (78.02 kg)HAIR: Brown, with touch of gray at the templesEYES: Brown
PERSONALITY: Strong Aquarius personality: smart, enterprising, loves puzzles and dilemmas and finding unique solutions to problems; inventive and thinks outside the box; a realist (tends to look at the glass as being half full, but knows glasses are easily broken); thrives on processing information; curious and alert but often cold, calculating and indifferent to the emotional needs of others. An early morning runner and avid student of chess, Talanov is fluent in English (American, British) Russian, Ukrainian, German, Spanish, andFrench. Committed and loyal, he enjoys spicy food (paella and pizza), fast cars, cold vodka and passionate music.
BACKGROUND:
Since his youth, Talanov was destined to be part of the Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti -- the Committee for State Security -- or the internal security and foreign intelligence agency of the old Soviet Union. His father, Mikhail Ivanevich Talanov, was reportedly killed when he was an infant, with his addict mother, Nina, dying from a narcotics overdose when he was four. Alex was subsequently handed over to his elderly maternal grandparents, who lived in a ninth floor Moscow flat. The grandparents, however, couldn't cope, so he was turned over to State minders, who immediately noticed his athletic and educational abilities and placed him in the Komsomol -- the Communist Youth Organization -- where he would be taught the fighting and philosophical skills needed to advance him to the KGB. It was here that he was taught Combat Sambo, where he rose to the rank of Black Belt, his instructor preferring the traditional belt system of rating over the cumbersome "razryad" system most sambists employed. It was also here that he learned how love was a weakness and vulnerability that an enemy could exploit. It was here, at age sixteen, that he became known as LedyanoÄ chelovek -- the “ice man” -- cold, calculating, charming and capable, yet possessing an unusual idealism about fairness, which his minders fed with Communist propaganda about the evils and decadence of the West.
Feeding on their words like a carnivore feeds on flesh, Talanov was rewarded with entrance into the Surveillance College in Leningrad, where his achievements resulted in an appointment to the analysis section of Directorate 7 (responsible for the monitoring of Soviet nationals and foreigners). His contributions in the area of surveillance and security soon led to a promotion to Directorate 9 (the KGB Protection Service, which included the 40,000-man uniformed bodyguard for Party leaders and families, as well as the protection of government installations, especially those containing nuclear weapons). In Directorate 9, he was mentored by the great Dimitri Lazovic, who chose him to coordinate the physical protection of Party leadership. It was here that Talanov came to the attention of Yuri Andropov, whose appreciation for saving his life resulted in his being selected for the Moscow State Institute for International Relations. After graduating, he was promoted to the rank of colonel -- the youngest in KGB history -- and assigned to The First Chief Directorate, which was responsible for foreign espionage and KGB operations abroad. Segmented into eleven geographical regions, the First Chief Directorate saw to the placement of intelligence officers in legal positions in embassies and elsewhere abroad. Talanov oversaw those assignments as well as provided analytical support to various sub-directorates and services, as well as personal assistance to Andropov on a number of secret assignments.
Talanov was not sure when the cracks began to appear, but appear they did in Department Thirteen:
"Why did we get married?" Andrea asked.
"What do you mean?"
She turned toward him. "You romanced me like there was no tomorrow, and we end up having this fabulous whirlwind marriage. But that's as far as it went."
Talanov did not reply.
"We're little more than strangers, Alex. And you seem happy to keep it that way."
"I think you're overreacting."
"People are trying to kill us! And you think I'm overreacting? Talk to me, Alex."
Talanov massaged a dull ache in his forehead. The pressure was getting to him.
"Tell me about your world," she said.
"Are you sure you want to hear this?"
"I think it's time, don't you?"
After working a pillow into place, Talanov settled back and for half an hour explained
how the KGB had trained assassins, terrorists, and deep cover agents at its Balashikha complex, near Moscow. "Communism on paper is what attracted my idealistic hopes: equality for all, freedom from oppression...that sort of thing. But over time, I became aware of all the things I had not been taught: that communism outside the classroom was really state capitalism ...the government's elite taking from others what they wanted for themselves. It's why communism can never work, and why I began helping the CIA bring it down...not that anyone in Washington cared."
"You sound cynical."
"I am. Trouble is, there are men out there with guns for whom these lofty ideals don't
matter one bit."
"It appears they matter a great deal. The question is, why?"
Talanov's disillusionment led him to become November Echo, the legendary KGB deep cover informant who supplied the CIA with intelligence on KGBactivities during the Cold War. For his service over the course of several years, Talanov was paid US $1.3 million by William Erasmus "Bill" Wilcox -- codename La Tâche -- the CIA branch chief in the American Embassy, in London. Talanov quietly invested the money in offshore accounts, thus enabling him to settle in Australia at the end of the Cold War as a multi-millionaire. It was in Australia that he met and married Andrea, who was the owner of Elegant Cuisine, a catering company, although his inability to return his wife's love was the cause of many problems. The couple lived in the swank Sydney suburb of Mosman until killers firebombed his house and burned it down. Within months of those events (chronicled in Department Thirteen), Talanov convinced his wife to move with him to Los Angeles in an attempt to find anonymity and peace (Greco's Game). Tragically, that peace was short-lived.
