Contemporary Parable by Michael Neale - The River!

The River

By Michael Neale

My father was killed in a mine accident before I was born. To my siblings his death was traumatic. To me, it was about a man I never knew. So the only Father I've ever known was our Heavenly Father. I hope you will consider The River as a contemporary parable, because that's how I read it. If you allow yourself to think beyond the words, the story line--you may see what I mean...

For Gabriel Clarke, it was even more traumatic when his father was accidentally killed. He saw it happen when he was just five! The only thing he knew was that he had lost his father... It didn't matter that he had been killed by trying to save the life of a man in a kayak on The River. Why did he leave Gabriel--he didn't have to, he should have stayed and continued their hike into the Firewater gorge...

How could anybody in Gabriel's position understand? I didn't understand that my father was killed before I was even alive. But I did learn to understand what it meant to be without a father...

Gabriel had been changed from the young boy/man who loved adventure and learning and experiencing new things along with his father. He now had only his mother and they moved to Kansas. His mother wanted to get away from The River! Gabriel wanted to go away...period... and he would do so by going into his room and staying there, until he was able to come out. We would call it PTSD these days. What it meant was that Gabriel had been so changed that the young, lively, energetic boy was gone. He was bullied in school, he was afraid...and lonely...

But then one teacher, a young Native American woman, came to teach at this school and she befriended him, talking about The River located near where she had grown up...And he started to remember how much time he had spent with his father near The River...

As a child, I was often alone, as the youngest of four children, as they would go off doing things with their friends. I spent many hours sitting by the Monongahela River or walking the small beach along the water. There were no rapids there...just the calm, peace of the water gently moving along... But, many years later, I had one of the most wild, totally memorable experiences ever! I went

Youghiogheny River Rafting

"The scenes on the water screen disappeared, and a
voice spoke again. Still held by The River, Gabriel closed
his eyes and listened, more content and peaceful than he
could every remember.
"You don't have to be afraid anymore," the voice said. "I
know you don't understand everything that has happened.
You can't. I know you thought you were alone, but you've
never been alone. Even when you can't see me, I'm there.
Even when you can't hear me, I'm there. You were made
for me, Gabriel. You were made for The River..."
in Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania...And I didn't know how to swim! Nor did the other two women who were with me! But we did get a great guide all to ourselves. Such a thrilling adventure for a girl who had always quietly walked along The River. Later, we toured Laurel Caverns nearby. It was the best day of my life in many ways!

And something like that happened to Gabriel. He had one friend who had stuck with him, chasing away the bullies through the years. Now they were graduates and Gabriel was invited on a trip--to The River! He didn't have the nerve to say no to Jimmy, his best friend...But he was afraid. He got away with not going on their first activity, jumping from a high cliff into the water far below.

But then he had met and gotten to know Tabitha and she was the first girl that had ever shown any interest in him...

Soon he was rafting...

Oh, it was not that easy. Gabriel had much to learn about rafting...and so much more. The first part of the book is slow, so sit back, get a cup of tea and spend some time getting to know Gabriel. You may find a little part of him in yourself. But be prepared for when he faces the rapids on The River. Because it's not all calm and meandering... And the greatest shock won't even occur on The River...

Did you watch "The River" on TV not too long ago... Just a note that there is no comparison. But I must admit that this was the first thing I thought of. There is much happening on The River. Only Michael Heale can tell the story he shares however. A total experience that will speak to you in many ways. Add the vids and it comes even more alive! I was made for The River! Were You?

Review: Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?

Quest for the
Nail Prints

By Don Furr

One of the favorite hymns, especially for the Easter Season, is Were You There?" Well, this weekend, I certainly was! Don Furr's book, Quest for the Nail Prints, took 13 years to complete, but there was no way that, once started, I did not quickly turn every page...at least once I traveled back in time to Jerusalem to personally meet Jesus...

Dr, Elizabeth Stewart worked mostly with emergency trauma. As the book opens, she is being called to yet another accident to, hopefully save a young boy critically hurt by a DUI. When he doesn't make it, she is affected more than usual. Her boss decides to "help" by at least changing her scenery as he assigns her to travel to Israel to jump start a new trauma unit at Rashaman Medical Center in Jerusalem.

Leonardo Van Eaton, Professor of Religious Studies, was scheduled to speak at the International Council of Religious Educators in New Delhi; however, when he arrived in Jerusalem, problems with his plane kept him there.

Reverend Paul Ryann had been gifted with a dream come true. He was going to the Holy Land as a gift from his parents. His wife had another commitment and so he would be traveling alone. His stepfather was seriously ill and he considered not going, until he received a mysterious message that he knew he must follow--he would go on his trip.

Each of the individuals met as passengers on the flight. In fact, they sat beside each other and as strangers began to share about why they were taking the trip. Paul and Elizabeth found common ground in their church activities, Paul as a pastor; Elizabeth teaching children in Sunday school. It wasn't very long before Professor Van Eaton had shared his position and had created tension as he explained that his knowledge of religions was purely academic and that he purposely remained objective so that he could better teach.

By the time they had landed, the Professor was quite happy to have them finish their journey, only to be somewhat relieved when they found each other again when his plane was delayed.

Quest for the Nail Prints
Later as they were sightseeing, they heard a scream. Paul running ahead soon found that two soldiers were getting ready to assault a young woman. As Paul called to them, he also was taping them, which caused the men to quickly knock the woman out and race after the three. There was no option but to run and hide from the two guards who were armed and clearly willing to eliminate their witnesses!

And it was as they hid in an old building, they were caught as the floor fell from under them and they were soon in danger as water began to rise in the space where they were. It was Paul who came up with the idea of using the old 8-inch nails to climb up and out.

But when they left the old building, the city from which they had escaped was not the same...they were back in time and the time of Passover was underway...

Consider if you would the Biblical accounts of what took place during Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, and finally the trip to Calvary. Now think about what you would do if you were right there, in the middle of it all! Meeting Jesus. Having him accept that you were there. Introduce you to his disciples and invite you to...follow Him...

What would you do if you were the only ones in the world at that time that knew in advance that Christ was going to be crucified. Quest for the Nail Prints will place each of you who will read this book exactly in the middle of it all. You may have seen movies or read other books and felt you were there. But Don Furr has placed new characters into those ancient beloved stories.  What would YOU do if you Were There? Surely you have no choice but to join Paul, Elizabeth, and the Professor as each of them finds out what their role was. Chilling in its realism; commanding in its story; secure in it's being the greatest love story in which we may all play a part!

You got it - a Must Read Recommendation for this one!

Slave transport in Africa, depicted in a 19th-...Image via Wikipedia
Blood Ransom

Mission Hope Series

By Lisa Harris

Zondervan
ISBN: 9780310319054
317 Pages

Blood Ransom (Mission Hope Series)Professionally they made a good team--Natalie Sinclair worked to eliminate diseases in Dhambizao and Chad Talcott was a doctor volunteering at a small clinic there. How they met and came together is an adventure that quickly pulls you into Lisa Harris's latest novel, Blood Ransom.

Joseph Komboli had come to Natalie for help; he had just witnessed the destruction of his Village, his family and friends abducted. The Ghost Soldiers were real! But Joseph was hurt and she forced him to go to the clinic with her before anything else!

There had been many rumors about Soldiers coming to take human laborers to work as slaves for the mines. Joseph had watched as they killed the ones unable to work and made the others move off ahead of them. Joseph had, however, just returned from a visit with his uncle who had given him a special wonderful gift, a camera. Now he would use that gift to capture and record the truth!

Having those pictures brought about a chase that led Natalie, Chad and Joseph through danger and death. Both Chad and Natalie were caught up--in each other first, and then into local events that had never been proven. Now with the pictures, if they could be used properly, it could result in the freedom of all those who had been enslaved.

All Joseph thought about was finding his family before they killed them like they had his grandfather!

But Joseph had also heard a snatch of conversation while he took those pictures. "The president will be taken care of...only four more days until we are in power." Something must happen before the scheduled election took place or the president might indeed be assassinated!

Harris lives with her family in Mozambique, Africa, where they are missionaries. She writes with an indepth knowledge of the people, the setting, and highlights the slave trade happening there. She challenges readers throughout the book--Where is God in this chaos? Will their prayers, their pleas to Him be answered?

Blood Ransom by Lisa Harris is an excellent adventure novel that shows how God uses us to work His miracles. Faith in action is a clear message in this exciting story!
