Cary Allen Stone Slams Readers With Today's Earth - Vanishing!

For the past century, the earth struggled to accommodate the weight of tens of billions of humans. Concrete and steel cities covered every inch of its surface area without regard for the effect on water table reserves. Without federal watchdogs, toxic chemicals were dumped into the rivers and led to heavy metal poisoning from arsenic, mercury and lead. Laws to protect the environment and population weren’t enforced for the benefit of those desiring financial gain. Humans squandered the earth’s precious resources with over-harvesting and with chemicals that burned the fields. Animals and plants became extinct. Evolved superbugs and bacteria resistant to medicines replaced diseases and viruses. The World Health Organization couldn’t keep up with the plagues.
The population required seventy percent more food and energy, but there was no technological advance increasing the yield. Energy sources, both fossil fuels, and renewables had been exhausted. Landmasses decimated. Copper, zinc, and platinum were stripped from the earth and depleted in decades.
Climate change warnings went unheeded until noxious deadly carbon dioxide gas levels raised at an alarming rate in the atmosphere, and sea levels rose placing cities along the eastern seaboard below sea level, while wildfires ravaged half of California. Industrial waste polluted the air and water. The earth fought back with tsunamis, floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and melting icebergs, but in the end lost the war. The planet entered a downward spiral the likes of a barren Mars.
As the free markets and world economy collapsed, tensions grew. Wars between belligerent nations scarred the earth. Darwinian super-predators terrorized the weak and frail. Humans believed technology would save them and the earth, but with artificial intelligent machines, people became obsolete. Cyber-war attacked and disabled cyber-security. Humanity lost its way, lost anything to believe in, and for some lost the desire to live. Suicide rates spiked, but no one cared because the deaths left more precious space for those who refused to surrender and die. Any hopes and dreams they had for a better life for their children dissolved. A few religions made desperate attempts to ease the suffering but found that ancient doctrines were useless and irrelevant. The preachers were unable to convince the flock to be compassionate and help one another.
Xenophobia reached epic heights, as did genocide and filicide. World governments were on constant high alert, prepared to launch nuclear warheads that would sanitize the earth. The people, particularly the Doomsday Preppers, had lost faith in the government and institutions choosing instead to protect themselves by storing food and burrowing into underground shelters for when the apocalypse arrived, but who survives a nuclear holocaust?
When a nuclear weapon explodes above ground the radiation is carried by the Jetstream and circles the entire globe for centuries. It accounts for the increase in cancers and birth defects. The initial mushroom cloud is only a part of the destruction. The radiation lingers to cause slow, painful deaths for the world’s population. Philosophers and artists accepted humanity was a failed species. Scientists recalled Carl Sagan’s warning, “Extinction is the rule. Survival is the exception.” Many chose extinction while a few refused to believe it was the end of humanity and rushed to find solutions. It took years to prove whether their theories were plausible.
A chosen group found viable solutions using the current technology. The answer, they concluded, was no longer to repair Mother Earth, but rather to leave Earth and find a new home to plant the seeds of humanity, and begin again.
The story of SEEDS begins here.

Seeds: The Journey Begin

By Cary Allen Stone

Do not be deceived by the brief description for this book...This is not a daydream, conceived by swinging on the back porch, looking up into the sky... This book, in my opinion, is as near today's reality than some may ever realize--until it is too late...

Stone has used his love for reading all things science to create a novel that comes at the best possible time for such a story.You will be reading about things that has been done to Mother Earth, and ignored, for the most part. Climate change looms large for those problems, while the human factor reflects today's news headlines and nuclear fighting is dangerously causing alarm...

Introducing a set of men and women scientists who were extremely concerned about what has happened, they have come together to form a new group, SEEDS. Yes, they had financial backing, but it was not to try to do anything about salvaging earth--they all felt it was too late. What they planned was to build a ship and colonize a far planet. Given that Russia and China had already been looking at Mars, they turned toward Titan, a moon circling Saturn... It had been under investigation for years and found to be a possible future planet that could be inhabited...The book begins with the work already started for preparing for space travel. The work was exciting and when others  learned and saw what was happening at SEEDS, they soon wanted to join. Readers will move into details of all of the various things that were required to not only build the ship (think ark for taking both people and all life forms), but all planning for construction and fabrication of materials once there were being researched, tested, and improved accordingly. The tedium of the details is counterbalanced by a set of fascinating characters, all experts in their own fields and selected for what contributions they would bring to the project and after leaving earth.

Beyond the doors of SEEDS, the news stations broadcast the deteriorating state of nations. It sent chills up and down spines and made for an increase in the use of psychotropic medications. Many parents thought about where they’d find a safe place for their families. The children still played, but they were cognizant of Mommy and Daddy’s change in mood.
In the States, politics were unnerving. Congress was a name they called a group of old white men who were expert at doing nothing. The Supreme Court sat in their lifelong tenures with nothing to review since no one passed laws anymore. The President appeared to be more unhinged every day. He hated the media, which he claimed created fake news, wrote an avalanche of Executive Orders about nothing and only listened to and believed the reports of the fringe and conspiracy theorists. He continued to hold rallies, post-election, with his ardent supporters. Psychiatrists alarmed the public with claims the President was clinically insane. Historians said the President was a fascist and as soon as he found a reason, he would take full control of the government by declaring a state of emergency.
In the frame of the television camera, Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History sat on a chair across from a news anchor and gave his take on the state of the country and the world. He lamented the country’s rejection of science and that it would lead to the end of the nation’s democracy.
In the scientific world, astrophysicists inside and outside SEEDS discussed the theory of inflation, not the monetary kind, but the fact the universe somehow had sped up its expansion. Why had it done so? Was dark energy the cause? Astrophysicists loved to discuss the abstract. They had no reason for it save our universe might exist within a black hole, which only traveled in one direction. The theory aligned Einstein’s general relativity and gravity with quantum mechanics. It upended the Big Bang theory. Regardless, it meant the universe was moving farther away from Earth. The board adjusted their timeline once again.
~~~
I couldn't think of one thing that Stone had not included in his planning for the relocation of the human race to a moon many millions of miles away... He has brilliantly combined scientific research, especially space travel and problems here on earth, together with characters with expertise they are willing to share for the good of mankind, if only they were allowed to do so. Using today's world reality instead of a projected future adds a totally convincing story that could not feel more real!
They heard the last member of their crew. There had not been enough room for him on the last shuttle...He reported that nothing and nobody was left on earth, before he, too, died...
The remainder of the book shares the trip to Titan... I'm typing and wish I could say this is a must-read... but we will soon all be gone on earth... Only those who make the trip will have a new beginning... God Be With Those few humans who remain...
Out Today! After You're Dead...by Cary Allen Stone
"I always respected you, Dr. Binghamton."
"Thank you, Richard."
"Now, let's go so I can meet Beverly."
The bright polished steel of the knife in Richard's hand caught the light from the kitchen windows and flashed like a strobe light in the darkness. Both men moved out and around the car to the side door entrance to the kitchen. Beverly was there to greet them.
Just as the doctor was about to introduce Richard to his wife, Richard sliced Binghamton's throat. He dropped to his knees and then forward to the floor. Beverly screamed and backed away, but Richard pulled her close enough to drive the bloody knife into her neck. He pulled the knife through her throat and decapitated her. Her lifeless body with the dangling head dropped to the floor next to the doctors. Both victims bled out in under a minute.
"My apologies, Mr. and Mrs. Binghamton,I'm in a fit of a rush and don't have time to discuss my errant ways."
It's best fried leaving a little
pink on the inside and served
on fine china...
~~~
Richard stepped over the bodies and searched the residence for any others, but found no one, not even a cat. He went through the house and pulled down every shade. The television repeated the news of his escape and said what to do if you crossed paths with the psychopath. He paused to see if they mentioned covering your neck...
"So, what's for dinner? I'm famished"!
Richard separated the two bodies and studied them side-by-side. He thought about the Filet d'Binghamton he planned to dine on that evening. It had been a very long time since he had taken one life, much less two.
"She's a little younger than the doctor, um, chicken, or steak? The doctor has a few more years of tenderizing and a few more pounds. Ah, he'll be the main course, and she will be dessert. Do I dare spoil my dinner by having my dessert first? I've been in that institution for thirteen long years. I believe I deserve it..."

After You're Dead
A Jake Roberts Novel

By Cary Allen Stone

Hannibal Lecter fans will consider the latest novel by Cary Allen Stone a must-read! For those of us who love Jake Roberts, we can consider this a must-read... I have to admit, though, that for me, Stone's Hannibal character was decidedly...disgusting... Fortunately the worst is in the early pages.... And Richard Graham, the worst of the worst, who had been assigned to a clinic-type environment rather than jail, had successfully escaped--by merely walking out of the building along side Dr. Binghamton... You have to admire the brilliant breakout Stone has provided for us... as we read how Richard makes his escape out of the country...

Still, readers find that the preliminary pages lead to a later quite satisfactory encounter for our friend Jake Roberts! A twist that provided a quite satisfactory solution of revenge Jake needed... And that's all the time I'm willing to give our escaped psychopath with a desire for dining on his own...kills...

I'm not a suit. I'm just a cop.
~~~
Katy crawled across the bed
and looked at him with
sympathetic eyes. Her breath
was warm on his face. She
licked his cheek, once, twice,
to let him know she was
there. He grasped her and
held her close....
~~~
Caught in a nightmare revealing one of the his fears of losing loved friends, Jake woke up and looked over at his best friend, Katy.
Jake had lost too many friends and still was not over how Caitland had been murdered.

Jake had a hard time, sometimes, adjusting to the fact that he was no longer a cop--that he had business concerns that must be attended to while most of his friends lived in the building where his company was located. Except for one--Pablo, who led the largest gang in Arizona, the MexiKings. And it is Pablo who has come, seeking help that he feels only Jake can provide... Pablo's wife has been kidnapped and is being held to force Pablo to enter into a business liaison with the top, and most dangerous, drug lord now in operation!

Jake knows it is a potential deathtrap, but once again Jake's deep feelings and love for his friends become the driving force. Thinking of how Caitland was lost to him, he can't help but feel strongly that Alanna must be saved. He has to try to prevent more dead loved ones...

Entering into the opulent fortress of the drug lord was heartbreaking for me...How can these criminals continue to operate and turn our children into addicts without being destroyed by American officials, is what I want to know each time I think of this deadly disease running rampant across the world...

Jake takes on the role of a mafia criminal who is now in a maximum-security facility... and he and Pablo are to make contact with El Mencho--an articulate, disciplined, educated, and dangerous man... Pablo had told him he wanted out when he learned that El Mencho wanted Pablo's soldiers to be drug traffickers in the US! Then El Mencho had countered with his kidnapping and bargaining chip...either Pablo did what he wanted, or...Alanna would be killed...

This latest novel is edgy, filled with tension and suspense. Jake and Pablo are playing a very dangerous game, because Jake has kept this operation a purely need-to-know. That means they must make it out on their own. But how?

Readers worry along with Jake's friends, especially Katy, as she knows something is very wrong, but have no idea where he might be. They think he is with Pablo, but that doesn't help when no type of communication works to get to him...

As readers quickly turn page after page, we begin to wonder whether this is the end of the Jack Roberts Series! Even Jake, Pablo and Alanna had given up, knowing they'll never be able to get out of this fortress...

This is a thriller that is well worth reading, even with the gore! If you haven't read Jake Roberts, I can tell you that earlier books I've read: After the Kill, After the Goode, Mind Over Murder, and the Debut, After the Evil, which has already received over 2100 hits here, has certainly provided a lead-in to this latest! Even the horror has led to, perhaps, one of his best so far... Each of the books are able to be read as stand-alone, but my recommendation would be to do what I did...start at the first book and have a Jake Roberts reading marathon! Good Stuff!

Forever Sunshine: The Jane Cochran Story ...by Cary Allen Stone and Tyler Hosea....

“Yeah, well, mom was bigger than life, and I could never compete with Jane Cochran no matter what I did. She trained other female pilots to fly military aircraft during World War II––her beloved WACs. After the war, she was the first woman to break the sound barrier. I don’t remember how many flying records she broke. I took all of those plaques down months ago. As a civilian, she broke down even more barriers. She opened the door to the airlines for women. Mom had logged more flight time going into the airlines than any man applying. I went to med school, and I always believed I broke her heart because I did,” she said.

Forever Sunshine:
The Jane Cochran Story

By Cary Allen Stone
Tyler Hosea

He was on his way home after a long tiring trip. His sister meeting him gave him the warm, loving hug that he'd needed--perhaps for quite some time. They hadn't seen each other since their Mother's funeral.

He'd relocated for his job and to be with his partner, while his sister had wanted to stay near home and had moved into their home place once their parents had both died.

Disappointed that Peter and Kyle wasn't with him, his sister promptly wanted to know where and how they were...which led to his sharing about Kyle already being confronted with comments about being a "homo." They knew that more was to come when he was in school but they were holding off talking to him.

They had the day to themselves to catch up so big brother promptly started asking about when she was going to take the big step and go out on her own rather than working at a hospital...noting that she knew that their mother had wanted her to be a risk taker too.

He was surprised that she felt she had failed their mother so he promptly confronted her with her own accomplishments.  And it promptly became a mutual admiration conversation before turning into more discussion of their family's past.  “What’s wrong with your accomplishments in medicine? You’re a nationally recognized oncologist, Chairperson of the department. You broke quite a few barriers of your own, big sister. They don’t pale in mom’s shadow. Mom was mom. She started flying DC-3s, trained up to the Electra turbo-props, and flew the first jet-
powered Boeing. She flew everything between that and the A380. I don’t think she missed landing her airplane anywhere in the world. But you’ve saved lives in your career! They were so proud of you graduating a doctor of medicine, making discoveries, and becoming head of the department. They were proud when I graduated from law school, but they weren’t proud of my being a criminal attorney and keeping felons out of prison. I not only live in their shadow, I live in yours,” he said.

Forever Sunshine is one story in a Mother's Day Anthology with 13 authors sharing their work. As with most of us, we all think our mother was special, but I realized even more so that my mother and our family life was quite different. My father was killed in a coal mine accident before I was born. My mother worked day and night to keep our family in a home, clothed and fed. When you read a story like Forever Sunshine, it is hard not to make comparisons. Knowing my life might have been completely different, however, does not make me less in awe of how my mother raised four children totally on her own...I know she made me what I am today...

It's a joy to learn about a woman that many would never have known without reading this story! How many can say their mother was the first woman to break the sound barrier, and at the same time, break barriers for women as female airline pilots! Her children did have a role model for their own lives!

She could not decide if the rest of the day would be good, or bad for them. When the lawyer read mom’s will, it said there was a letter she wanted them to read, at her graveside, on the first anniversary of her passing. Both had been tempted to open it early, but they waited as they were asked to do. She had an anxiety about it during the entire time...
She tried to be like mom in the operating room––calm and cool, never shaken, like a James Bond martini. She thought she had managed well, but the visit brought back a lot of memories, things she had stored away. She was uncomfortable with the day, going to mom’s grave and opening the letter.
She went into the closet and dragged out a storage box full of citations and awards mom had received over her flying career. Mom was famous in aviation, but you would never have known it when you met her. Mom would listen to everyone else’s lives at the market, in church, and at social functions. Mom had an uncanny way of making everyone feel special. She had commendations for things she accomplished in the hospital, but she still felt overshadowed by her mom. A few tears rolled down her cheeks as she saw mom’s pilot wings,,,
~~~
They held their mother in high esteem. In fact, that was why this reunion was taking place...their mother had left a letter that came along with the reading of her will, asking that it be read on the anniversary of her death. All day as they'd been talking, "Forever Sunshine" had come into the conversation...just as their mother had said thousands of times. He remembered when he and his Dad would get into things and Mom would come in to soothe hard feelings...he could even remember her exact words about his question about why he was different...  She’d stroke my hair and tell me everything’s going to be all right, that I just needed to behave. I asked her once why I was different, why didn’t I feel like the other boys? She looked me in the eyes and said, ‘Because God wanted me to be that way.’ In that one sentence, she removed the cross I carried. That was mom, our forever sunshine.”
And then it was time to leave... He could feel his sister was apprehensive and talked to her about it... But when they got there, neither was prepared for what happened...
“Wow, this is so incredible. A famous rock band once sang, ‘The love you take, is equal to the love you make.’
This is a heartwarming story, with children looking back to remember their mother...and father as well. They remembered the family, together, and hoped to follow their parents as they raised their children in forever sunshine. This story is, of course, different for each family; but we can relate to it and seek out our own memories to consider and cherish. But it is the climatic ending that really makes the reader feel the emotional impact of this stirring and inspirational story... It's a touching, uplifting tale of a mother's love! Highly recommended...
Cary Allen Stone Amazon TOP TEN Best-Selling author, Multi-Award-Winning, Crime Fiction and Psychological Thrillers
Recently, my significant other, Tyler Hosea, and I co-authored a short story for a Mother's Day box set titled "Mother's Day Magic...With love" anthology along with 12 other award-winning authors from around the globe. I write crime fiction and psychological thrillers so when they asked what I wanted on my cover for the anthology, I said some blood and crime scene tape. I didn't get my cover, but we became Amazon Top Ten Best-Selling authors.
My backstory is, I spent almost forty years inside the cockpits of corporate jets and airlines and because of it I acquired a unique perspective of life. I was fortunate in 1992 to fly Sir Ridley Scott on a location scout in the islands. We talked about writing and building an image inside the words. He was quite a mentor.
Before all of that, I graduated from high school with a JD, juvenile delinquent, and from college with a Bachelor of Arts. I was lucky to be involved in some feature films in LA and Indie films in Phoenix. I got to play the bad guy. I have done voice-over, radio commercials, and standup comedy magic. I represented the USA alongside nine other countries in the Night of Magic in Bogota, Colombia performing before dignitaries, ambassadors and their families.
For my "Stealing Atlanta," I received the endorsements of Clive Cussler and Tim Dorsey. My first published work was a true crime story titled, "Through a Mother's Eyes." It was a case study of parents who murder their children. I had a friend who murdered her six-year-old son and I did a case study of the tragedy. Respected expert, Dr. Philip Resnik, said it was the best layman's book on the matter of "filicide." The book has a worldwide reach, and is intended to prevent another tragedy. Book Bub did a promotion on it and 14,976 books went out in a day.
Other than all of that, I am a proud member of the oldest women's writers club in the country, the Phoenix Writer's Club, begun by women reporters in the 1920s. I also know what the CocaCola recipe is.
Tyler Hosea is an editor and reviewer, and with Forever Sunshine a breakout author. She has contributed to all four of Cary Allen Stone's Jake Roberts Novels. She has the difficult job of being his significant other for the past eleven years, which is no small task. Tyler's profession has always been in aviation having spent twenty years in customer service and management. Her current position in aviation is classified. One of these days you will find Tyler behind the controls of an airplane as she continues her private pilot license.
Tyler is an avid reader, a part of her nurtured by her mother since she was a young girl. She graduated with honors from Oglethorpe University. She is an official Georgia Peach having been born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She has traveled extensively around the world. Tyler has appeared on several of Cary Allen Stone's book covers. Both she and Cary will be writing their next complete book anthology continuing on from their Forever Sunshine.
Spotlighting Cary Allen Stone's Jake Roberts Series - Latest - After the Kill! Top Favorites to Begin the Year 2016!
"I have investigators swarming his North Phoenix residence now. The house was a mess, broken glass everywhere. They found his laptop. It had some insights into what might have been going through his head. His phone records show he called the V.A. repeatedly, left voicemails asking for help. They never returned his calls," Hart said.
"Other than the calls to the V.A., he stayed off the grid," Kelly said.Jake's pent up emotions went ballistic. "You know, we take young men and women who are at the start of exciting lives, and we train them to kill. We send them to some screwed up country still living in the Dark Ages, and tell them to make it right. We keep sending them back. They trust us, so they believe in the mission. After the trauma and the killing, they come home stripped of their humanity, their bodies damaged, and broken. They have no limbs to guy with, no legs to walk proud on. When they come home, there is no home. We don't take their phone calls? He 'was just a pissed off soldier with PTSD," Special Agent Kelly? Really? Maybe he felt he didn't fit in anymore. Maybe he felt abandoned. I know personally what that feels like."
Kelly and Hart politely excused themselves and headed back to Gina. Before they got ten feet, Jake spoke out.
"Was it worth it? Was today--the dead and the wounded--worth some bureaucrat not returning a phone call?" Jake asked.
"No,, of course not, and all we did today was react. Maybe, someday, Congress will give them the help they all deserve. Maybe Sky Harbor will be the wake up call. Right now, is there anything we can get for you? Kelly asked.
"No, Agent Kelly, unless you can perform a miracle to keep Fred alive..."
After the Kill:
A Jake Roberts Novel
By Cary Allen Stone
Stone begins his fourth explosive novel by honing in on the plight of soldiers who come home from war... Many in the United States are quick to point out atrocious behavior in other countries and cry out for action--starting by sending American troops into enemy territory! War is profitable--it is easy to declare action be taken...
But America does not take care of those whose lives they've destroyed by sending them into battle... Eric Sutherland was just one of those soldiers who had come home and finally cried out for help in the only way he felt could make his point... he covered his body with explosives and headed for an airport...
http://www.unknownsoldier.
org/Images.html
"No more. I can't do it anymore." Dying was the answer, when you ran out of options. Either someone else pulled the trigger, or you did. He had seen the ice cold, boney finger pointed at him at least a hundred times. He loved his country, and the Special Forces soldier proved it during three back-to-back tours in Iraz and two more in Afghanistan. He was their go-to-gy for explosives. The other soldiers he served with said he was the bravest man in the country. His commanding officer recommended him for the Medal of Honor for his actions in one ambush attack. He alone saved his unit, but he refused to accept the commendation. He took a direct hit to his psyche sometime during his last tour. It fucked him up... Eric Sutherland made hundreds of calls to an unanswered phone in the V.A. Hospital. He left as many messages and begged to see a psychiatrist, or someone to help him quiet his demons, and nightmares. He believed he was possessed by the devil PTSD. The V.A. never returned his calls. When he walked in the front doors, he was given an appointment six months away. He knew he couldn't keep the demons locked out that long. After another night of cold-sweat nightmares, Eric sat on the edge of the bed. He knew what he had to do. The scenario had run repeatedly through his thoughts for weeks. He showered, shaved, and dressed in his desert combat fatigues, with boots on his ground. The suicide vest he had prepared days earlier went over the camo...
~~~

Fred and Jake were both involved in the attempt to set off a bomb at the airport. Fred Campbell, a good friend of Jake's had been hurt, being the first man trying to stop Sutherland... Then Jake went into action... using his uncanny intelligence and guts to stop the situation...But that was just a test trial for what was yet to come...

Caitland and Jake were both busy with their respective jobs. Jake was consulting on a movie and Caitland was planning a party for all of her clients...

While another individual was studying and becoming an expert in forensics psychology and was already a well known consultant in this important field. The consultant's greatest desire was to get to know, to understand them, including our Series' beautiful Lori, and not just from textbooks. She received an opportunity to visit and study...and meet... some of the most dangerous of these serial killers... After she met one in particular, she came back home and started planning for her first. Knowing Lori was still in jail, of course, Jake's death would be an important addition to her...list...

She had learned so much...and her choice of murder would change based upon the various methods she'd learned directly from the "horses' mouths" you could say...

As was mentioned earlier, the emphasis of the series is Jake Roberts on the Hunt...Readers know this last killer and read of the devastating acts she performs. By this point in the book I was expecting the ending, still hoping it would not be what happens... Is it really the end of the series?

For me, there is no better way to express my highest recommendation for a book(s) than to wish that there will be a continuation of the characters I've come to know. Once in a while, an author speaks out on issues that are important to me and they become a new Favorite Author... Cary Allen Stone has struck that chord. I'm always amazed that I have little if any knowledge of the authors or story lines for books I agree to review and yet, I continue to find such gems! And these four books have become my first personal favorites for 2016!

'Nuf Said!

Itzhak & Me

While boosting cars and committing various misdemeanor crimes as a teenager I had no time to become refined in the arts. Loud rock’n roll with some rhythm and blues filled my ears and I could recite all of the great rock lyrics from the sixties. When I turned eighteen, I would be adjudicated as an adult so the crimes stopped but the music and attitude continued. Since then, I have had many adventures, some were fun, some were satisfying and some were dangerous...

After the Goode, Third in Jake Roberts Series, by Cary Allen Stone, Spotlighted Author

I admit it, I'm not much for comedy--I never could understand the desire to make fun of other people--nor the desire to laugh at such actions. Pointing this out is a disclaimer that the part of the book set within a Comedy Club has no bearing on my enjoyment of the overall book, After the Goode. Nor does it have any bearing on showing Madonna as a stand-up comedienne... LOL

After the Goode:
A Jake Roberts Novel

By Cary Allen Stone

“Okay, how about you sir,
with the discount hairpiece and the ’50s
 bowling shirt. Yes, you sir. I have to ask,
 is that your real face?”
 Donald wasn’t in the mood. He wasn’t
smiling.
 He didn’t want to be in the club,
or be part of the show. He only went there
 for Betty. He took serious offense
 at the remark, joke or not.
Bobby pressed him.
 “What? You look offended...
~~~
The story is quite different from the first two novels and presents a  diversion from Jake Roberts' previous involvement with serial killers. In fact, there could be a compelling question as to whether the action was actually murder...
The gripping question faced is "What would you do if you killed somebody?
Meet Bobby Goode... He was in his hometown to perform at the local comedy club...
Bobby Goode’s name on the marquee of the comedy club glared in sun-yellow sequenced bulbs against the deepening twilight. Other businesses posted less aggressive solicitations. His shows sold out within a minute of availability through the ticket outlets. Excited ticket holders stood beneath the marquee and looked for an opportunity to cut the line. Some would try the corridor between the comedy club and Copper Blues the nightclub next door...
Phoenix loved comedy. It was a comedic oasis in the desert. The Valley lay open its arms to anyone who could make them howl. From their seats, they had watched A to Z list comics gnaw at their funny bones and solicit gut wrenching laughter. Bobby had succeeded without inner demons driving him, unlike his peers who carried their personal psychosis and dependencies as crosses to the stage. Fallon saw that in Bobby. The only fear he had was losing it all, the fame and fortune. Bobby believed his Goode luck and timing would always see him through. He had just played San Francisco and was scheduled to do four sold out shows in Phoenix, before moving on to the Apple. Once there, it was a sold out Radio City Music Hall and a stop by the Fallon Show to say thanks to Jimmy for believing in him. It was also a special night for him because his career began in Phoenix. He was a hometown boy, Arizona born and raised. It was the place where he got his chops playing the small clubs.
The DJ cued up Red Rider’s Lunatic Fringe, the star’s anthem. Bobby got pumped as the music drove through the monster speakers. He wore black jeans, boots and a long-sleeve black shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow revealing a fashionable black leather and sterling silver clasped bracelet. His face had a three-day stubble that was very Duchovney-esque. His spiky black hair was in disarray. Looking blue-collar and talking white trash was part of the act. The common man and woman related to the rebel image of "I don't take shit from the man!"
 In reality, everyone knew they worked for the man, even famed comics. That was where the paychecks came from so everyone could play. In real estate, the rule was "location, location, location" but in comedy, the rule was "attitude, attitude, attitude."
The volume of the song dropped, while the DJ's voice rolled like thunder. His tone resembled an introduction to a WWF fight. “Are you ready Phoenix? Are you ready for the bad ass of comedy?” They screamed louder.
Before the night was over, Bobby Goode had killed a man and burned his body...
At about the same time Bobby Goode had arrived, so had Jake Roberts. He was there to visit an old friend, Fred Campbell. Actually, Fred had also just arrived in town, having completed his latest flight as an airline pilot...
Big changes had happened in Jake's life. For one, he had met Caitland. And for what he'd done, on his last case, he'd accepted a forced retirement. Caitland was thrilled to have him become a new client when he began writing novels and had become quite successful. Caitland was a well-known agent and was quite busy but Jake and Caitland had found a special kind of love that they both worked hard to maintain...mainly with Caitland striving hard to keep Jake from getting into tight situations like he'd routinely been in as a cop... But because of his expertise, she soon had him signed on as an expert consultant on movies...
And coincidentally got identified for who he was and requested to consult on the death of a visitor to Phoenix who had been short and burned in his rented car...
Fred had also found a lady-love and the four got to be close friends... And Fred had a personal love for comedy and even had done a little stand-up... Soon the four had attended the comedy club where Bobby Goode, of whom Fred was a fan, was playing...Soon they had become acquainted. But Bobby was beginning to change... He was missing rehearsals, going off on his own and even having a bad time on stage...His thoughts roamed all over the place, while one song began to constantly play over and over in his head...
The lyric from Rooster by Alice In Chains played in his head. He closed his eyes. It reverberated. He had been hearing it playing louder and louder all day for some reason, and now he knew why. “Here they come to snuff the rooster”
All of us who read this story will automatically start considering what they would do if they had killed somebody. Readers see the choices made by the man who had killed another--to hide the body. Then we watch as the man himself begins to deteriorate and change because of his decisions. A very interesting twist is that the killer falls in love for the first time and wants to have a life and a future with her...
Another thought-provoking story that again places readers into the minds of a killer. At this point, I haven't quite figured out what the author wants us to see--perhaps he's asking us to consider carefully our actions of today and what they might mean to the rest of our lives? Stone certainly has created a theme that forces those thoughts... I wondered, also, based upon my own opinion about this style of comedy, whether there was a message about using what is more sarcasm than humor and calling it funny. In any event, the inclusion of the novel within the framework of the other three more classic thrillers, certainly provides a break in continuity that sets readers up for the next book, which could also be the last one if the author decides to end the series with After the Kill... That review is coming next...
This novel proved to be an excellent transition into the next book. Stone has a method of bringing old friends or new friends back into his lead character's life, which allows us to become intimately involved with him. We learn about his shenanigans with these men and the jokes about how they all seemed to have turned out quite differently than the nuns had predicted they would...
Here's one reader who hopes that the series does not end... Jake Roberts as a consultant like Castle, maybe or somehow still finding cases that need his attention?  Cary Allen Stone, you've hooked me on your guys! Don't stop writing this series!
I was born in 1953 and received a Bachelor of Arts in 1976. In 1972, I started private pilot flying lessons and progressed to Airline Transport Pilot certification in 1978. I taught new students, flew twin-engine charters, corporate jets, and finally airliners like the B727, DC-9, B737, A300, and L1011. I was hired for my first airline job in 1982. I have flown throughout the United States and to foreign countries. One country wanted me to stay longer and kept my crew hostage inside my B727 until the State Department got us released. I currently fly for Southwest Airlines based in Phoenix, Arizona.
Growing up in South Florida, and aviation, has given me a very unique perspective of this
planet we live on. Flying had a lot to do with getting me started with my writing. I was asked one day to fly a Citation jet for a famous film director who was scouting locations in the Caribbean. I spent ten days with Sir Ridley Scott. It was a turning point for me. I had just started to put words to paper. The trip gave me an opportunity to discuss my writing with him. He encouraged me to write and after the trip even reviewed some of my work.
Around 2005, while flying to Orlando, I met a famous movie star onboard and we talked about writing. He and I became collaborators. I wrote a few screenplays. That took me into the Hollywood environment for several years where I learned more about the perspective and technical aspects of the film industry. I had a lot of fun, met a great many celebrities, and even appeared as an extra in “The Dukes” although the final edit only showed the back of my head…twice.
Since then, I have continued to fly and write. I self-publish my books through Amazon and have a great time doing so under my Fine Line Books. I’ve written short stories and have authored a true crime case study of “filicide” titled Through a Mother’s Eyes. And I have written four fictional crime stories. My Jake Roberts series includes: After the Evil, Mind Over Murder,  After the Goode and After the Kill. I also have a cybercrime thriller titled Stealing Atlanta.
In the past, I have also done voice-over commercials, performed a non-speaking role in an AAA travel commercial, and performed stand-up on open mike nights at Bonkerz in Orlando, Punchline and Funny Farm in Atlanta. I once represented the United States with comedy/magic at the Night of Magic in Bogota, Colombia.
My significant other has believed in me through all these years and I couldn’t have done any of it without her. She is still at my side every moment.
