Cary Allen Stone Spotlight - Mind Over Murder - A Jake Roberts Novel, Second in Series...

Through the panoramic plate glass windows of the new Maynard Holbrook Jackson, Jr. Terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, I’m watching as the world’s largest passenger aircraft, an Airbus 380 slowly pulls up next to the extended Jetway bridge, and stops. The ground crew is waving lighted wands, and one of them drags a fat black power cord to one side of the aircraft’s nose. Another signals to the captain the power cord is alive. I crane my neck to look up through the terminal windows at the crown of the fuselage, high above the cockpit windows. Almost everything behind the airplane, a skyscraper with wings, has disappeared. The only thing I can see is the light of the rising sun breaking the eastern horizon. Laser-like beams of yellow, orange, and pink cut across the cobalt blue, sunrise sky. The beams will extend to the edge of the Milky Way. From where I’m standing, I can see a steady flow of anxious passengers deplaning between the aircraft door, and the Jetway bridge.
My focus, though, is on the snapshot images of her. The ones I believed were locked away. The memories slice down and re-open the wound. She will walk off the plane in seconds. I thought I could handle this. I have to force the memories back into my mind vault. The Interpol photos they sent, documented that she is as beautiful, as the day she ran away.

What I have come to learn in this life is––
 beauty is often the beast.

I spend the time since it happened, immersing myself in my work as a homicide detective. Pursuing murderers is a weird way to try to forget how sick this world really is. Business is up–– murder rates are on the rise, more killing every day. There are more angry folks on the streets than when I was a kid. No one takes responsibility for their actions anymore, at least since Nixon was pardoned. They feel deserving, or battered by life. Respect for everything is gone. There’s just cold-blooded, bizarre behavior now. Life has become a dismal reality show. “Compassion” is just a word floated at us by the Dali Lama. Someday, I swear I’m going to walk away from all of this, and spend the rest of my life just forgetting.

Mind Over Murder:
A Jake Roberts Novel

By Cary Allen Stone

Lori Powers had escaped from the United States after her final kill--that was when she had written "JAKE" over the body. Many thought that she planned to kill Jake next, but decided to leave the country at that time. Now, she had been found and was being brought back to America. The two lead investigators were there to meet her at the airport. Not surprisingly, Lori had captivated both of her guards and they were now quite willing to keep her and return back home. Lori was beautiful...Jake had just been thinking what he'd learn from meeting Lori:
"What I have come to learn in this life is--beauty is often the beast...

Lori had stopped killing, perhaps from knowing Jake? Loving him? What she did know was that she would be spending the rest of her life in jail for what she had done...

Mika and Jake met her, but Mika knew it was difficult for Jake. Mika had been his first love but now they were more like brother and sister, still loving each other and covering each other's back.

Mika was my first love. A lot has changed since Lori became so much a part of our lives. Mika and I were lovers once. We’re more like brother and sister now, confidants. How we arrived here, and what we endured, has left both of us damaged inside. I doubt either of us will ever be able to fall in love again. There’s a tight knot in the back of my neck. I try to massage it away. My head is crying out for Excedrin. My stomach is crying out for a Zantac. My heart is just crying.
“How are you doing, Jake?”
 “So far––”
It amazes me how long we can bury, conceal, and ignore the things in life that have hurt us deeply. How that seething pain, without warning, returns in full force at inopportune times. We think of ourselves as great, majestic mountains, sturdy and strong, unconquerable, but even mountains erode into deserts over time. After a while, we begin to realize how puny we are in the universe, and how little we control in our lives. All we really have inside, is what we believe to be true–– what we can live with...
~~~
Stone has shared the interior thoughts and dialogue of a man who faces danger every day to keep our country safe. The empathy that he's shown for our police officers is great. I, for one, had already wondered how they do what they are called upon to do. The outstanding effort of the author has put into words what readers will know must be true--they bury and ignore those feelings. But how long can they endure doing this? This is the second in the series and already we are worried about Jake and whether he can handle everything...
Sure I recognize that this is fiction and is purposely made dramatic to hold our attention and emotions, but I can't help but think that just one traumatic experience for some of our officers could be the breaking point beyond which they cannot recover. Indeed readers will continue to learn of this emotional stress as the series moves forward. This is not a series I can proclaim "magnificent," even though it is intriguingly unique in a number of ways. What I can say is that I've learned a much more healthy respect for the fear and raw nerves that each must have, given the continued lawlessness and lack of gun control that continues unchecked... May others find the very real message that underlies the thrilling stories that keep us riveted and work to effect change in whatever way possible.
But this is not a continuation of the Lori Powers case except in another unique twist again engineered by Jake...
Meet Jared Hamilton, the latest serial killer who had decided to kill five people...
Jared Hamilton was born with an off-the-scale I.Q. He wore the standard Coke-bottle glasses. He walked the uncomfortable-in-his-shoes, insecure gait. He had a self-conscious, awkward demeanor. The fifth grade was the last one he was forced to complete in a formal learning institution. Inside his mind, was a whirlwind of thoughts and ideas. He saw numbers and days as colors. He watched equations fly past at the speed of light. He could solve them all without breaking a sweat. His extraordinary intellect was his strongest asset, that he couldn’t relate to anyone in the world was his major flaw...
Jared decided he was only going to murder five individuals, unlike the more prolific serial killers who had gone before him. It was a number that he had calculated in some skewed equation. He reasoned if he kept the numbers down, and used his superior intellect, powerful analytical logic, and his self-control, he had a better chance of eluding capture. Mind over murder. The equation said if he did more than five, like a gambler, it would all turn against him over time. He also had no plans to become a sick-fuck, murdering addict like all the others. He just wanted to enjoy the experience. He just wanted to be a player. He would be the best slayer-player ever. He decided that his top five killing techniques would not be as impersonal as a drive-by. He needed to do them all on a timeline. He was a genius, smarter than everyone, so he wasn’t going to make mistakes, he would beat the system. If he followed his equation, Jared believed he could satisfy his taste for blood, and then disappear off the radar, exist in complete isolation, until the heat died down. Once the trail was cold, he would reemerge as a respectable member of society, with a respectable career in industry, on Wall Street, or in politics.
~~~

And he was successful in every way, from the murder of his parents, on to the next one chosen, and the next...with everybody including Jake, totally clueless as to how to grab hold of this case...

Only one obsession developed by Jared became his  Achilles' heel...

One subplot that I especially enjoyed was Jake's strolling into the local crime boss' place and beginning a relationship with the individual, invariably turning out to having made a friend! This one had even killed Harmon, Jake's beloved partner... Still he went to visit him when he was on Death Row...
He’s barefoot. His prison pants are rolled up the one knee and he explains to me the absurdity that there are no Wall Street people in here, no bankers, no Federal Reserve Chairman, no Senators, or Congressmen, there are no one-percent, free market businessman types. The incarcerated and condemned are instead, poor, significantly uneducated, or at best blue collars who still believe, crazy or not, that the capitalistic system is the best because they could still be millionaires someday.
In Death Row, there is just cold, harsh reality, and not too much intellectualizing. Someday is a special word to them. Every day they have is one. They really are the ones that couldn’t adjust, couldn’t deal with the rules and the man, prime examples of the dumbing down of America–– know those sports statistics, forget about the Constitution, fight our wars, but don’t come back all fucked up and do wrong here. It just occurred to me that all of my friends are murderers. Mika and I are the only ones that killed to protect, but we still killed. If I hadn’t sworn an oath, and wasn’t wearing a badge, I could be in one of these cells. I reach down and get a firm handshake from Chipper...

“I told him, man. I told Harmon, don’t fuck with me, man. HE WOULDN’T BACK AWAY.”
“Well, that was Harmon. You could have backed way.”
The stabbing glare came back in my direction then his massive head turns away and looks at the guard. The guard took a tighter grip on his weapon. Chipper had something else to say to me. “You loved Harmon, didn’t you?”
 “Yes, I did.”
“I wish somebody had loved me like that, you know, real-like, like you and him, real.” He contemplates then rotates his broad shoulders toward the cell bars...

Why didn’t Chipper kill me. After I get back to my apartment, while taking off my bloodied clothes, in my shirt pocket I find a handwritten note, scribbled on a napkin from the prison:
I feel like I’m back in the womb, in the darkness, an unborn child, in a black universe. How long? What is this place? I hear cries. They are mine. I’m alone, afraid. –– Chipper
Even serial killers, have a piece of humanity left inside of them. No one is completely evil.
~~~
And while Jake is hurting from the pain and loss of loved ones, he turns around and there she is...
We should walk to Hard Rock. We can have lunch and a few drinks, and then come back to run through the fountains hammered,” she says.
“Sounds like a plan. What do you want to do after that?”
 “Anything you want, name it,” she says. I’m as agreeable as I have ever been in my life. If she said get on all fours and demonstrate the pound puppy hump, I would.
~~~

One of the key reasons for becoming a serious fan of Cary Allen Stone is his overall story line plus subplots that have been used to further develop the type of man Jake Roberts is. In doing that, I saw my thoughts and feelings were quite similar to those of the main character. Were these also those owned by the author? Could be... But the more important thing to me is that he included important issues in these books and takes a stand. Not everything is black and white. Not every criminal becomes a killer. Not everybody that kills have no feelings of loss, sadness, and dismay at the life they've led...

Stone's books are thought-provoking, memorable, as well as seriously engaging page-turners... A master at character creation that forces avid readers to take a personal interest, even in those committing the crimes. You don't hate Stone's bad guys, you see a depth of their character and past--the cause for their crimes. These are not the men out for power, for bottom-line money--they have a personality that is carefully explained and developed. And, somehow you don't exactly hate them, you feel sorry for them... I found this difference a welcome diversion from the more routine "total sympathy for victim and hate for the criminal." And a much more fascinating overall reading...Third book coming...

I was born in 1953 and received a Bachelor of Arts in 1976. In 1972, I started private pilot flying lessons and progressed to Airline Transport Pilot certification in 1978. I taught new students, flew twin-engine charters, corporate jets, and finally airliners like the B727, DC-9, B737, A300, and L1011. I was hired for my first airline job in 1982. I have flown throughout the United States and to foreign countries. One country wanted me to stay longer and kept my crew hostage inside my B727 until the State Department got us released. I currently fly for Southwest Airlines based in Phoenix, Arizona.

Growing up in South Florida, and aviation, has given me a very unique perspective of this planet we live on. Flying had a lot to do with getting me started with my writing. I was asked one day to fly a Citation jet for a famous film director who was scouting locations in the Caribbean. I spent ten days with Sir Ridley Scott. It was a turning point for me. I had just started to put words to paper. The trip gave me an opportunity to discuss my writing with him. He encouraged me to write and after the trip even reviewed some of my work.

Around 2005, while flying to Orlando, I met a famous movie star onboard and we talked about writing. He and I became collaborators. I wrote a few screenplays. That took me into the Hollywood environment for several years where I learned more about the perspective and technical aspects of the film industry. I had a lot of fun, met a great many celebrities, and even appeared as an extra in “The Dukes” although the final edit only showed the back of my head…twice.

Since then, I have continued to fly and write. I self-publish my books through Amazon and have a great time doing so under my Fine Line Books. I’ve written short stories and have authored a true crime case study of “filicide” titled Through a Mother’s Eyes. And I have written four fictional crime stories. My Jake Roberts series includes: After the Evil, Mind Over Murder, and After the Goode. I also have a cybercrime thriller titled Stealing Atlanta. I am currently writing my next Jake Roberts novel, After the Kill.

In the past, I have also done voice-over commercials, performed a non-speaking role in an AAA travel commercial, and performed stand-up on open mike nights at Bonkerz in Orlando, Punchline and Funny Farm in Atlanta. I once represented the United States with comedy/magic at the Night of Magic in Bogota, Colombia.

My significant other has believed in me through all these years and I couldn’t have done any of it without her. She is still at my side every moment.

Cary Allen Stone Spotlight - Debut Novel in the Jake Roberts Series - After the Evil!

The face with the smile that floated past him reappeared, he couldn’t remember. Blaring in the background, he heard lyrics and hammering of heavy metal music. He recognized The Cult.
It’s the way that you feel
 It’s the truth in your eye
Cause you’re up against the world
And still you rise...
~~~
The song by The Cult had become her theme for killing...One of her victims may recognize it; others just heard the noise of heavy metal music. Lori would quickly recognize the type of man he was and she would begin making her plans. She did it for her daughter--because she hadn't acted for her before she committed suicide.
She visited her daughter's graveside often, talking to her until Emily started to talk back to her. Neither now trusted men, but how was Lori to know that her husband would do what he'd done??? And when she accepted it was true, it was too late.
Lori started confessing.
“Father, like yourself,
 I have taken the Lord
thy God’s name in vain.
I have not honored my
 mother or my father.
And I am about to break
the commandment—
 Thou shall not kill.”
 She looked deeply into his
wide, terrified eyes.
“Bless me Father,
for I must sin again.”
~~~
After she placed the duct tape over his mouth, it became very difficult to make out some of his words. “No” was muffled, but reasonably understandable. “Don’t” didn’t sound quite right, but she got the idea. She mimicked his muted pleas pretending to feel his fear and pain. It was the end of Father Anthony Moralli. He began his last day on earth on an airliner. His destination was a resort-gambling oasis, which coincidently included a well-stocked pond of young females.
He was on what he liked to call a “personal pilgrimage.” The expedition had nothing to do with religion. Anthony simply wanted to, no needed to, get laid. To accomplish the task, it required leaving the confines of his parish to maintain the façade of his vocation.
Father Anthony loved the whole religion thing— the ceremonies, hearing confessions, and especially saving lost souls. He planned to start saving his soul right after saving all of the others.
After years of religious studies and training, he concluded it was beyond his comprehension to truly understand God, so he simply preached the commandments, and left the rest to God. What Anthony really understood were the basic physical needs of a man. He struggled with his vow of celibacy, finding it to be in direct conflict with his deep and firm conviction, that sex was a gift from God. To abstain, he believed, was a slap to the Creator’s face. The “Love thy neighbor” commandment was his favorite, and he took every opportunity to apply it to his life. Of course, that did not include molesting boys like some of his classmates in the seminary. He boarded the flight sans white collar, and slumped into his assigned seat by the window, in the emergency exit aisle.

After the Evil:
A Jake Roberts Novel

By Cary Allen Stone

I think I must have an attraction to homicide cops...you know, the white hat guy, even if he's somehow broken, he's always after the bad guy, out to protect the rights of the victim. So it was easy to decide to read and learn about Jake Roberts from the debut of his series... I had signed up to read After the Kill, and when I received it the author had offered the other three books. I had already started the fourth book and liked Jake Roberts, so Stone and I worked out a spotlight deal--and all of you reap the benefits of the author's offer!

There is a very, very intriguing twist to this first book that totally fascinated me, so I'm going to be very careful not to mention it in this first review, even though it will come out in subsequent books...

Let's go ahead and get more involved in the work of a serial killer, who turns out to be unusual because it's a female. She is trying to make amends to her daughter, who committed suicide after being assaulted by Lori's husband...

She quickly realized what kind of man her husband had been and his death was the kick-off to a string of men who were, what I call, two-faced. You know the type, they present one face to the world and hide another side of them in the darkness...
The book starts with her "taking care of" a priest who left his collar behind when he boarded her plane where she was a stewardess...

It finally hit me this morning who I would choose to have played Jake Roberts (I'm sure you'll recognize him). Jake is a special guy that has multiple sides to his personality. He falls in love quickly, is very loving with his female, as well as male friends, and yet is willing to take great risks when involved with a case, to get the job done. And he holds his thoughts and emotions close to his chest...

After waiting for over an hour, I recline on the couch, but shift into several uncomfortable positions. I can’t sit still. I hate having to surrender my thoughts and my emotions to him. God forbid I say something that causes him to take me off the streets. I would leave, except the department's policy requires all cops involved in a shooting, have to see the shrink.
“I watched as the Molotov cocktail flew in an arc and crashed through the stained glass window. Jesus the Shepherd was at the center of the window only moments before.” I feel like I’m suffocating, cornered. The place and surroundings couldn’t help, but make you feel flawed as a human being. “The Molotov cocktail rolled across the sacristy floor spitting yellow and orange flames. Heavy, coal-colored, swirling smoke billowed out. Nothing could be done, while the blaze burned the house of God to the ground. Then the dark angel responsible, as if receiving an order directly from Satan, began the last barrage. The weapon discharged, and my windshield exploded. Shards of glass and debris flew all around me. I dropped to the pavement.”
After a long swallow from the glass of water on the end table, the rest of my nightmare slips out. Easy Jake, don’t talk about anger in front of the man...
Abrams allows my words to hang in the air. His unnerving silence makes me squirm and twitch. Is he waiting for me to collapse? He asks a simple question with a calm voice.
“Can you go on, or would you like to stop here?”
That really cranks me off, so I blast back.
“Hey, tell me what I’m supposed to do here, what I’m supposed to say, tell me how I’m supposed to heal.”
Abrams answers with a calm, compassionate tone. “Jake, it doesn’t work that way. You had physical trauma from the gunshot, and the doctor prescribed a pill for the pain, but what’s in your head cannot be cured with a pill.”
Dr. Thaddeus Abrams, mid-forties, is wearing his trademark heavy-rimmed, black eyeglasses. He is soft-spoken and polite. In addition to his own practice, he is included in the department’s payroll. A shooter like me is supposed to attend therapy once a week. Those who work through their pain can regain their life and career...

But Jake had one good memory from the visit with his psychiatrist, he had briefly interacted with a beautiful woman and knew he was already half in love again... Oh no, Jake's needing an emotional relationship, but is the time right?

Jake was on the new case, but Mika Scott, FBI, with whom Jake had once been involved, came in to take over. At that time, she didn't know it was a female who had left mutilated bodies over the country and who she had been following. Now she was faced with working with an old lover, with whom, she knew in her heart, she was still in love... Jake was having the same thoughts and difficulties of working with Mika...

And then the serial killer had taken out a pilot and then Jake's psychiatrist! What was going on?!

Why was Jake going to see a psychiatrist? Court mandated for a shooting that had really got to him. He'd killed on a case and the victim turned out to be a girl.  He couldn't forget it when he'd pulled off her mask...

I love Harmon Blackwell.

 He is there for me with no limits,
 or barriers. As he stands,
he blocks whatever sunlight
is shining through the shaded
front windows.
 He looks interesting back lit.
He leaves through the front door
 knowing it’s better to leave me
 alone for now.
He’s gone before I can make another
smartass remark.
After the door closes,
I see my Glock lying beside me
 on the table.
How easy it would be to end the pain.
~~~
“Hey Geronimo, you need to give it a rest. Why don’t you dig deep down into your inner man, and get back to respectable?”
 “I’m feeling like I’m already six feet down, just waiting for someone to cover me with dirt, and here you are with a shovelful.” I lean back, close my eyes again and think. She was just a kid. The next thing I know, I shout it. “SHE WAS JUST A KID!”
 “That kid put a hole in your arm. A few more inches and she would have put you in a hole.”
 “She would have done me a favor.” I fight back. I need sympathy, and I have no one else to get it from. I’m counting on Harmon to pull me up. The others talk about how lucky I was, but I’m not so sure.
Harmon softens his tone for a moment, and asks a curious question. “Did you cry?” Tough guy Harmon never asked me that before...
~~~

Readers are totally involved with the thriller from the beginning--there is no mystery. Rather there is the suspense of what is going to happen next and how it is going to affect the various main characters. For me, I was already involved with Jake Roberts, the main character, and watching the various interactions with his close friends and loved ones. I must admit I was surprised with the end. But somehow relieved...Curious, wouldn't you think?

This reader has found another hero to adore...Watch for second in series!

“Cary Allen Stone is a brilliant writer of psychological thrillers and murder mysteries. He writes with a keen eye for detail–the graphic violence is chillingly realistic. He delivers a taut, darkly introspective, cunning and well-executed plot by leaning towards the fallible side of his characters. He understands the criminal mind avoiding the stereotypes that dominate crime thrillers. There is a good balance of chemistry and conflict, good and evil that fans will find enthralling. His characters become embedded in our psyches and the pace of his unraveling of his thriller is a ride not easily forgotten. Cary Allen Stone is an important name to watch. This is one superb crime writer!”––Grady Harp, Amazon Hall of Fame Top 100 Reviewer Vine Voice

A Trip to Italy to Start the Year - Of course, with Carole P. Roman as our Child's Tour Guide!

If you were me and lived in Italy (I-ta-lja), your home would be called the Republic of Italy, and it would be found in the southern part of Europe. It is often called lo Stivale (lo Stee-val-e) or "the boot," because it is shaped like one.

In ancient times, Italy was the home of the Roman Empire. For many years, it controlled most of the world...

A Child's Introduction to Culture
   Around the World

By Carole P. Roman
Illustrated by Kelsea Wierenga

I have always wanted to visit Italy so I'm happy that Carole Roman has taken our children there in her latest book. As many will already know Rome is the capital of the country. It was founded by Romulus in 753 BC and is one of the oldest cities in the world...Rome is often called the Eternal City...because of its influence on western civilization. Doesn't this beautiful picture reflect the feeling of eternity?

Of course one of the best parts of visiting another country is to meet the children actually living there! If you were a boy, your name might be Leonardo or Sergio or Angelo...
Or if you are a little girl, popular names are Conchetta or Giana, or Letitia...

This series has a set selection of information so that children will learn about the children they may meet, the food they will eat, the type of money to be used there in Italy and also some few basic words such as what mother and father are called in their language. And learn about their home life and sports they play.

My favorite part is when we act as visitors and get to see some of the famous local attractions in the country. For instance, the famous Coliseum right in the center of Rome. When visitors come, you would love to show them the famous Coliseum in the center of Rome. It is an ancient concrete and stone theater that is the largest amphitheatre in the world. Three emperors or kings built it during the years 72-9- BC. It sat fifty-thousand to eight-thousand people and was famous for public events...

I was especially intrigued by the significance they place on International Women's Day on March 8th, when the mimosa flowers are out and the children pick them to present to the important women in their lives... How Cool!

Once again I've enjoyed traveling to another country with Carole P. Roman. There are many different events and activities that you and your children will enjoy learning about. Highly recommended...

Happy New Year's! What's Happening at Book Readers Heaven

Hi Everybody...another year has gone by--can you believe it?! Thanks so much for coming to visit Book Readers Heaven in  2015! Those who visited in December - 20,401 - brought the total hits up to 544,246... For a blog that doesn't promote, has few giveaways, and sticks only to books and writing-related material, I think I have reached people from all over the world who seriously enjoy reading and learning of really great books and other good stuff! I had 12 from Slovakia this past month...I always wonder how word gets out to far-away places--is it by accident? Do friends of friends of authors refer people here? Or is there some magical search engine that spits out the latest? LOL In any event, the end of the year seems the appropriate time to once again thank you for supporting Book Readers Heaven!

I've got a 4-book thriller spotlight coming up soon, a book that will help you think about a resolution for the new year--Blabbermouth, and new books from a number of authors whose have earlier been reviewed here. Plus, always new ones that contact me from various sites where my reviews are posted...

One new activity I added this year was creating a picture stream of by review page and posting just the pics on Tumbler. That second notice always seems to bring many more in for that particular review. And for those who haven't yet been here--my blog is in magazine style which brings up a pic and short blurb of what's available. This easily allows you to scroll down and pick and choose what looks like an interesting book or a piece of poetry that's been shared...

From a personal side, the good news is that my foot surgery has gone very well and I have just one more checkup visit to confirm that things are fine... I also found someone who has been helping me do maintenance and cleanup at my cabin, which has required me to get involved as well. This is the first major upgrade to the property since I've lived here so it's been a welcome change but also time consuming...

My sister, Dee and Bill
The bad news was that our family lost Bill, my brother-in-law, who had always helped me with mowing and maintenance until his health forced him to stop. His family had built the cabin where I'm living but circumstances prevented the cabin from automatically staying in his family. Fortunately, it was when I was retiring that I was able to move in, knowing that it would go back to his family in the future.

I read in one of my recent books where the main character had loved an in-law in his family so much that he had dropped the legal words and just called him his brother...That's how I felt about Bill. I have never met a more loving, gentle man who loved God's world and its bounty--fishing and hunting to feed his family, caring for others by giving his life to the scouts and church, and, above all, loving his family--including me... He had a droll sense of humor that you could easily miss if you weren't watching his face, his eyes, to catch the twinkle shining there. I learned that his favorite song was "Shall we Gather at the River..." and thought how very appropriate--it spoke of him and how he loved the land and his country...
I shall miss him greatly...
