Sharon Sala Speaks to Women in her Novel - Broke-Ass Women's Club

It was nearing the end of May. David had been working the St. Louis area for almost a week, and it was time for him to head southeast. He was packing, getting ready to leave, and Janie was fussing with his suits and clean shirts, always making sure he had everything he needed for the time he would be gone. “David, darling, I'm putting in a few extra shirts… just in case,” she said. David smiled, poked a finger through one of the red curls above her forehead, then ran a finger down the side of her face. “You, my love, are the best. I don't know what I'd do without you. I'm going to miss you so much. I'll text every night. Oh… and don't forget, the plumber is coming tomorrow to see about that garbage disposal, so be watching for his text.” Janie hugged him. “Thank you for always taking such good care of me.” “It's what I do,” David said, then closed his suitcase and picked it up off the bed. “Come walk me to the door.” And so she did, falling into his embrace and goodbye kiss, then standing in the doorway and waving until his car was out of sight. Only then did she go down the hall to her office to begin her workday.

Within moments of getting on the interstate, David Logan shifted to his David Lowry alias and was on the phone with his third wife, Gretchen, in Springfield. She answered breathlessly. “David! Darling. What a perfect way to begin my day.” He chuckled. “You are such a sweetheart. I just wanted to give you a heads up that I’m headed your way today.” “Wonderful! Will you be here tonight?” “Yes. I think I have about a week's worth of work in the area, so we have some special time ahead of us.” “I'm so excited! Have a great day. I can't wait to get you home!” “I can't wait to get there,” David said. “See you soon.” After that, he put his phone on Bluetooth and headed south. Less than an hour out of St. Louis, he drove straight into a thunderstorm, turned his wipers on high, and found an oldies station on Sirius XM. The traffic was steady, and David was driving seventy. He was singing Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain with Willie Nelson and keeping up with the traffic when his cellphone rang. When he saw it was his second wife, Bettina Lee, who knew him as her husband, David Lee, from Kansas City, he let it go to voicemail. A few seconds later, it rang again, and he rolled his eyes. It was his fourth wife, Pauline Lord, in Columbia. He loved his women, but he often wondered what the hell had he been thinking? All of a sudden, a semi came flying past him in the fast lane, and he was abruptly awash in water. It hit the driver's side window so hard and fast, it startled him into thinking he was about to get side swiped. He swerved, and when he did, his car hydroplaned and spun him to the left, right into the fast lane of traffic, into the path of another fully loaded semi. It took a rescue squad two hours to get his car out from under the truck, and then peel what was left of him out of it. He was identified by the driver's license in his wallet, which happened to still be David Logan, and the tag number on his car, which was registered to the company he worked for. Then they found a briefcase wedged partially beneath the seat with three more driver’s licenses, all with his photo, but with different names: David Lee, David Lowry, and David Lord. At that point, it became the responsibility of the Missouri Highway Patrol to find his next of kin and to notify the local police to see if any of his aliases turned up in open crimes. A detective named Fairfield got the file dumped on his desk, shuffled through it, and began a search on David Logan, David Lee, David Lowry, and David Lord. What he discovered was shocking. The man had different Social Security numbers for each name, which led him to believe it was a case of stolen identities. But further investigation revealed that while the man had been using Social Security numbers of deceased men, he'd been paying taxes on all four identities. He also discovered David Logan had a rented mailbox in a post office in St. Louis, where the mail for his aliases was being sent. The detective was floored.

David Logan wasn't just a bigamist. He was a skilled conman who knew his way around the systems it took to hide what he was doing. Now he had to find out if he had next of kin under any of his other names. That's when he found the four wives and didn't know who to call first. In the end, it didn't matter. They all had to be notified. After that, it was up to David Logan's first wife to claim and bury him, although he was in so many pieces, there would have been enough to go around.

It was just after lunch when the doorbell rang. Janie was mopping up a spill on the kitchen floor, and when she heard it ring, was glad for the momentary reprieve. She leaned the mop against the cabinet, ran her fingers through her curls to get them off her forehead, and hurried through the hall to answer. What she didn't expect to see were the two Missouri Highway Patrolmen standing on her doorstep. And she still wasn't processing what she was seeing until they asked for her by name. “Janie Logan?” “Yes, I'm Janie,” she said. “Mrs. Logan, I'm Officer Danfield from the Missouri Highway Patrol, and this is my partner, Officer Kirby. May we come in?” “Yes, of course,” she said, and led them to the living room. As soon as she was seated, Danfield delivered the blow. “Mrs. Logan, I am sorry to tell you that your husband was in a car accident on I-44, and he did not survive.”

This book is for every woman who finds herself on the hard side of life through no actions of her own.

I dedicate it to the strong ones who refused to quit. You are my sisters. And you are not alone.

~~~
This is a book for women--all women... Men are free to read it as well if they want to learn an important lesson... Still, given the numbers of books, movies and personal stories shared by one friend to another, most of us--women, that is--knows what it is like to be "screwed" by a man, or even...many men... Name one good man and most of us will match you to those that could be called, simply, Bad... And, in the case of David, it was pure Bad to the Bone!
Have to tell you, Sharon Sala knows how to tell a gripping story! Real, Honest, and in-your-face Truth! Some men are naturally working a con, no matter what they are doing...
men--you know what I mean. Of course, we've lived with the biggest conman of all, haven't we...?
The thing is, though, that most women, are pretty open and involved with their emotions. When they fall for a guy, they're going to try to stick it out. Sure, there are some players out there (and I think I'll share next an article I wrote about them...) but their long game is almost always to find somebody to love and be loved by and move on into family life of some kind.
So, it was with all four women who had, in good faith, married a conman named David... He had been playing the game most of his life, but then figured it was time to think about the future... So he looked around for a job that would take him away from home to work... Then, he planned it meticulously, using the social security numbers of dead men and establishing different lives for each life... In his mind, he had it made, he could travel around his area and always have a woman in his bed no matter where his job led him...
But then in the midst of relocating from one home to another, he was killed in a horrible accident which left his body in pieces... By the time that each of his four wives discovered what had been happening, they all decided--burn him and throw away the ashes!
And, then, each woman had to look hard at where she was, realizing that the man she had loved had left her penniless and without a home! But she knew one thing, she would make it... All she had to do was figure out that first step...
Janie was David's first wife, thus, the only legal wife of the four. She also had owned a family home and had her own accounting business, so she was at least minimally able to continue without too much damage of her husband's theft via credit cards... After learning what had happened and especially that the other three would probably wind up homeless, it didn't take long for Janie to make a very important decision...of love and friendship...
She opened her home and her heart to who quickly became sister-wives--in the truest sense of the term!
From the very beginning, once everybody got settled, it was as if it was truly meant to be... With a home that was wonderfully available, each began to think about what they could do for the future--to help bring in money to maintain and build on what they were now sharing!
At first, gossip was tough and seemed to be the only thing people wanted to talk about... But, then, each of the women began to work or take on tasks at home to fulfill the day-to-day operations of running a househld. Soon, even a next-door neighbor, whose son had moved in and was, somewhat crowding her out of her past life, was spending time next door...
“It's so sweet of you to invite me to your picnic,” she said. “Our pleasure,” Janie said. “Take a seat, and what's your poison? Iced tea or lemonade? Oh… and the tea is unsweetened.” “I haven't had lemonade in ages, and it sounds so good. I'll have that,” Florence said. Pauline scooped ice into a glass from their ice chest, filled it with homemade lemonade, and set it at Florence’s place, and then they all sat down. Just before they started to eat, Janie tapped her fork against her glass, and then picked it up. “Ladies, a toast! We've gone from sad-ass to bad-ass. To friends and sisters of the heart!”
“Sisters of the heart!” they said, and lifted their glasses in unison. After that, it was all about passing food and filling plates, with AC/DC blasting “Highway to Hell,” a song that could have been their anthem. “This is the best time this house and I have had in years,” Janie said, as she served herself another deviled egg. “True that for me,” Bettina said. “Just think of all the weeks and holidays we spent alone.” Florence frowned. “What do you mean?” Gretchen shrugged. “Think about it, honey. You're a man with four wives, strung out from one side of the state to the other. You can't be in four places at once, so you pick one location, and spin some big story to the wives in three other places as to why they're spending yet another holiday alone. Then you’re so charming to all of them when you do see them, they blindly accept the
bullshit.”
Florence's eyes widened. “Oh my God! I never thought… I didn't realize the ramifications of…” And then she stopped and shook her head. “My hat's off to all of you, and my sincere sympathies for the tragedy and the travesty of your lives.” And in that moment, Janie knew Florence meant it. “Well, you can bet the last piece of fried chicken in the bucket that it'll never happen again,” Janie said...
 “Oh, my Lord… I am so full, I don't know if I can eat another bite,” Bettina said. Pauline came back with a plate piled high with the little buns, and Bettina was the first to take one. She ate it in three bites. “Yeah, that's how I diet, too,” Gretchen said, and snagged one for herself. They were sitting around the table, still telling stories from their childhood when Spotify shifted to a new song, and all of a sudden, the girls squealed and began a litany of comments.
“Yes!” “My favorite!” “Oh my God! I can't sit still and just listen!” “Nobody like Queen!” Florence waved her hand. “I'm older than you girls. I don't recognize this song. What is it?” “It's Queen! The song is ‘Somebody to Love’!” Janie said, and bounced up from her chair, grabbed a spoon for a microphone, and started dancing and singing with the song as she moved up and down the length of the verandah. Bettina licked the potato salad off her spoon and joined her. Gretchen stood up, threw her arms up into the air and started belting out the chorus, with Pauline right beside her.
Florence sat back in her chair, reveling in their abandon and the joy on their faces. In that moment, she knew if her hip wasn't so arthritic, and she knew the words to the song, she'd be dancing along with them. These women weren't bemoaning their fate. They were celebrating their own independence on Independence Day. But once they were up, they danced and sang from one song into the next until sweat was running down their backs and beaded across their foreheads. Still, it didn't matter. When one song ended, their neighbors on the other side of the fence started clapping and shouting, “More, more, more!”
Janie took the lead on Bon Jovi's, “Livin' On a Prayer.” Bettina did the same on a Green Day song.
And Pauline rocked out on Nine Inch Nails. It was all music from their youth. And then it shifted to Chris
 Stapleton's bluesy, country song called, “You Should Probably Leave.” By the time the Stapleton song was over, they were laughing. “That's something we should have told He Who's Name Shall Not Be Mentioned,” Bettina muttered, and they laughed even harder, because it was easier to laugh than it was
to let go of the tears they still held inside. “It's getting too hot for this, and I need to get the potato salad back in the refrigerator,” Janie said. Florence stood. “I ate my way from one end of this table to the other without having to cook a thing, but I'll sure help you clear the table,” she said, and together, they began carrying food into the house. While Janie put leftovers in the refrigerator, the others started clearing off the table. Before long, the only thing left as a reminder of the day were the two flags still flying from the porch. They sent Florence home with leftovers for her supper, and a round of hugs for her company. And all the way back to her house, Florence kept thinking of what amazing women they all were, and how horribly, terribly wrong she'd been. It had been a life-changing day for Florence Lane. And it had been a life-changing day for the residents of the Broke-Ass Women's Club, as well. They'd hosted a party. With guests. Well, one guest. And they'd danced themselves into a whole new mindset. It was a good day, and it wasn't over yet. As soon as the kitchen was clean and everything put back to rights, Bettina spoke up. “I have an announcement to make.” They all stopped and turned around, giving her their full attention. “I am full as a tick and going to take a nap so I'll be ready for fireworks tonight.” Gretchen grinned. “Fireworks as in the kind you and Johnny shoot off, or the kind that explode in the air?”
And every single sister found herself in a situation where her personal ethics, her truth, her reality was tested...and she won!
She couldn't get over the randomness of leaving the office for lunch. She'd never done that. Not once since she began working there. But today, on the anniversary of the day David Lowry had sworn everlasting love to her and said “I do,” she’d broken her routine.
Today, because she was sick to her stomach angry at a dead man, she’d saved a little boy's life. She saw the pattern—how one little rock thrown into the ocean can cause ripples forever. If David hadn't died. If he hadn't left her penniless. If Janie Logan had not invited them into her home. If she'd never gotten the job at the insurance agency. If this hadn't been her anniversary. If she hadn't been so angry, she would never have left the office. Or bought the cookies. Or gone to the park. They might never have found Billy Royal until it was too late. One rock… A million ripples… It was nothing short of a miracle...
Sharon Sala has presented all women with a sure knowledge that they are able...to be free...to be real...to be accepted just as they are... and never, never alone... Give yourself a Christmas Present! Get Broke-Ass Women's Club! You're Gonna Love It!
God Bless
The Desolate Garden by Daniel Kemp - Historical or Today's World???
http://ns1.wordpress.comns2.wordpress.comns3.wordpress.com.www-thedesolategarden-com.co.uk/
Chapter One: Poison Ivy The first time I saw her was three days after I was told that my father had died. All the national newspapers had carried the story in their first editions; most describing him as a private banker, others as simply a financier. All had speculated as to why. The majority of the more respectful had suggested pressure, and stress in the current financial world. However, the most popular tabloids had repeated the accusation for which he had successfully sued them, that his money had come from unscrupulous and tyrannical rulers of various African countries. Only this time they glossed over some previously mentioned names, and added the word 'alleged.' They had not known that he had been murdered...
“Lord Paterson? I'm Detective Chief Superintendent Fletcher of the Special Branch. I've got some news for you about your father…may I come in?”
It had been the previous Sunday, around about three in the afternoon, and I had just driven home from my local pub after spending all morning blasting crows out of the sky. I reeked of alcohol, sweat, and cordite. The twelve-bore 'Purdy' shotgun lay dismantled on the gun-room table, and the rest of my gear was scattered around the floor. He glanced at the gun. “Been busy, Sir?” He asked, in an official police tone.
“Yes. One of my tenants keep sheep, and they're lambing. The crows pick out the lambs' eyes almost the minute they're born, nasty creatures, so I lend a hand killing as many we can. My license is in the estate office, if you want to see it? Incidentally I'm not a Lord, only a lowly Honourable.” I replied, without looking at him.
“I never knew that about crows. As for the license, that won't be necessary.” He paused. “I'm afraid that your father was found shot in the head by the housekeeper at his home in Eton Square, London, at ten past one this morning; so, as I understand it, you are now a Lord,” he stated, in the standard perfunctory, manner that the police inform relatives of the unfortunate. “Can you think of anyone who may have wanted to kill him?” He enquired, without a change of tone to his voice or any pretense of remorse.
The shame of it was that I could not. However, that did not imply that he had no enemies; only that I had been unable to discover them, and I should have. “Absolutely none. He was the last person I would have thought of to have had enemies. It might have been money they were after…he had plenty of that,” I declared, not trying to hide my indifference.
“He was alone in the ground floor sitting room. There were signs of a forced entry Sir, and the housekeeper says that he was alone that night. He had no company.”
His monosyllabic style of speaking was beginning to annoy me. “Was there anything missing?” I asked, knowing exactly what the housekeeper meant by company.
“No, Sir, nothing that the housekeeper or his valet knows of. I was hoping you might be able to provide some information, throw some light on it. Has he been in touch with you lately?” He asked, fingering the bespoke carved stock. “Very lovely gun. Expensive, I expect,” he added.
“Yes to the gun, and no regarding him being in touch,” I curtly replied. I had never had much time for the police and he was not changing my opinion...
“Look… he and I didn't get on. We haven't spoken to each other since he left before my mother died. I haven't spoken to him or seen him in almost two years and, quite frankly, I don't give a toss that he's dead. If that's all, Detective Chief Superintendent, I've got lot more important things to do than discuss the personal relationship the two of us had or didn't have.”
My abruptness and directness had shocked him, or perhaps it was my inhospitality and his need of a drink that hastened his departure, I was not sure which. However, before he left what he considered to be an unfinished conversation, he summoned me to London the following Wednesday to meet with a Government Official. He did not name him, nor his office, but declared. “You will be met at the station, and we will expect your full cooperation in all of this, your Lordship. It is, as you will appreciate, a matter of great importance. I look forward to your collaboration at our next meeting.” Irascibly, he stressed the 'next', as I closed the door behind him.
I had no qualms over the forthcoming journey to London, other than my complete distaste of that city and all who traversed its capricious streets. What did worry me though, was the question of who had shot my father? I could think of a reason why it had happened; but had no idea who could have done it!
The Desolate Garden
By Daniel Kemp
Given that each chapter carried a name that had something to do with gardening, I admit that in the back of my mind, I kept trying to figure out the association of the title and chapter headings to the book itself. While I was unable to immediately confirm why Garden became an important theme, I enjoyed learning how it evolved from one character in particular...
One of the first English words that Paulo learnt from the old man at the postal office in Leningrad was 'Garden.' At his tender age, everybody was old. Even his own mother was ancient, and as far as his father was concerned, the fact that he was nearing his fiftieth birthday was beyond his youthful comprehension. A colorful garden, however, was not. Yuri, a name he was to use himself later in his life, had been a gardener's apprentice on an estate in England before the Great War had started in Europe and he had begun Paulo's education by showing him pictures of how the huge kitchen garden looked, behind the walls that sheltered it and kept it warm. The young, aspiring, Paulo found a parallel between life and gardening, and he became more aware of the words that Yuri used to describe the art in which he had wanted to prosper, before the world erupted.
The sun and the rain were important, of course, but so too was nourishment and care. Knowledge of where best to grow a particular plant and how to prune it, to keep its shape, or to maximise its production. “Have you ever seen a plot of land that's been left to its own and God's devices, Paulo? All overgrown, with the plants strangling each other?” he asked, then answered without delay, “Of course you have. They're all around you. That's what happens when nature has its own way, without us to supervise and manage it.
The world would be in a sorry state without gardeners, that's for sure.
Do you know what God's answer to pruning is? It's war and desolation; that's what it is. A messy way of doing things,” he sagely proclaimed.
He had forgotten to add an important aspect of prolonging a flowering plant's life before it turned to seed; that of deadheading, allowing the production of more flowers to flourish.
To the aging and skeptical, more pragmatic, Paulo, life was
equivalent to war. The strong must survive at the expense of the weak. He had adopted and followed this philosophy, except for on one occasion; when he failed to spot a shoot left to grow from the base of his rose bush, one that threatened to suck the life out of its host, the merciful Paulo himself...
...and set for a night of bliss, as my
undoubtably charms had obviously
seduced her, or so I thought!
"It was because I was ordered to
meet you, and you haven't
disappointed me. You're exactly
as your file reads. I can summarize
it in one word: chauvinistic.
Thought you'd scored, didn't
you? Shame...you couldn't be
further from the truth. I've got
to hold your hand all the way
through the debrief. I'm your
liaison officer, and I'm stuck
with you. How did your reunion
with our lord and master go?
Was Trimble wearing that
sarcastic smile of his?...
~~~
It was there in the discussion about working in a garden that I learned...

Do you know what God's answer to pruning is? It's war and desolation; that's what it is. A messy way of doing things,” he sagely proclaimed.

The Desolate Garden starts out as a murder mystery, but as you read, it becomes primarily an historical investigation that flashes back to activities in Great Britain and in Russia...

The Honorable Harry Paterson had just become Lord Paterson as a result of his father's death...murder, that is... Harry had not been close to his father, and the specific position of each child was automatically declared based upon their placement in birth. Harry was fortunate when a younger son had been born and he had not had the responsibility to take over the family bank, about which he'd been quite pleased!

But his father being murdered naturally placed him as a "major person of interest" because of his inheritance of being named "Lord."

But instead of being interviewed and returning to his home, a liaison officer had been named to stay with him through the entire investigation, perhaps for safety of the new Lord, but primarily to determine exactly what he might know about the murder.

I must say that I became fascinated with the interview process and imagined it must be similar to that now being done by Special Investigator Mueller, for certainly, tracking the money became a significant part of the discussions with the new Lord Paterson.

It was quite clear that Judith knew much more about Harry and his family than he does. On the other hand, Harry's father had contacted him before his death about secret transactions that he'd discovered at the family bank and asked for help in trying to learn more about them. What evolved is a long history of collusion, spying, financial payment for political reasons, as well as personal family secrets that went back three generations.

The further I read, the more I was intrigued in discovering not only what and why things had happened as they did, but who was now committing murder, perhaps to hide some of those historical secrets...But, I have to share that nothing prepared me for the ending! Very Cool! I love being stumped by the author as he weaves his magic...

I'm not a fan of war, but, you know, this historical story provided me a better understanding of what is happening in today's world.  I knew there were things that the average national citizen didn't know about...but I realized after this novel, just how corrupt and ruthless politics and wars between and among nations can be. By the dialogue method between the two main characters used to follow past and present steps, readers feel as if they are right there, working within the investigation, discovering each detail, and able to see how and why each action took place... Clearly the author's past profession has allowed him to transfer his experience into edgy stories!

The conclusion was quite satisfactory, but I did wonder what the future held in store for Harry, the son who lost not only his father, but his younger brother, who was also murdered, and was, for quite some time in danger of losing his own life. The book is slow-moving, meticulous in detail, while suspenseful and complex enough to pull readers into the story more and more. A sub-plot where new members of Harry's family were identified at the same time he was losing those from his immediate family gave a softening effect to the overall horror that had happened through the years.  If my comments sound interesting...do check it out...it's highly recommended.

Daniel Kemp, ex-London police officer, mini-cab business owner, pub tenant and licensed London taxi driver never planned to be a writer, but after his first novel —The Desolate Garden — was under a paid option to become a $30 million film for five years until distribution became an insurmountable problem for the production company what else could he do?

Nowadays he is a prolific storyteller, and although it’s true to say that he mainly concentrates on what he knows most about; murders laced by the intrigue involving spies, his diverse experience of life shows in the short stories he compiles both for adults and children.

He is the recipient of rave reviews from a prestigious Manhattan publication, been described as —the new Graham Green — by a managerial employee of Waterstones Books, for whom he did a countrywide tour of signing events, and he has appeared on ‘live' television.

Ever Met a Klepto Cat? Check out Rags, the Cat-Eye Witness presented by Patricia Fry

Savannah glanced up and saw her friend rushing toward her. "Iris, what's wrong? You look pale. Are you okay?"
"The money's gone," she said breathlessly.
"What?" Savannah moved closer so she could hear her above the hustle-bustle of activity behind them.
"The money's gone," Iris whispered loudly. "Someone took it."
Savannah froze in place, squinting her green eyes in disbelief. She motioned for Iris to follow her into the dining room, where they wouldn't be overheard. "Are you sure? Could you be mistaken about where you left it? This is a big house, you know."
"No," Iris hissed. "The box is there, but the money's gone..." she wailed....
"I'm just sick." Iris said as the two women ascended the staircase.
Savannah squeezed her friend's arm. "It'll be okay." Okay? How can it be okay that someone took the money we all worked so hard to raise for the neglected and abused horses? she thought. And how is it okay that there's a thief among the guests in my home?
..."Iris, you're babbling."
"I know. I do that when I'm nervous or scared." She crossed her arms tightly across her chest and shuddered. "Right now, I'm both," she said, tearing up again...

Cat-Eye Witness:
A Klepto Cat Mystery

By Patricia Fry

When I need a break from world issues, I turn to my TBR bookshelf for one of my waiting cat mystery books. I thoroughly enjoyed this one by Patricia Fry! It is a light murder mystery for which you can take a cup of tea and sit down to relax and read...

I liked the main character, Savannah, and her interaction with Rags... And also enjoyed the family and other characters developed for the series...

Interestingly, there is also quite a cat community involvement that shows the author's vision of a small-town setting where I'd love to live! In fact, it is a fundraiser sponsored by the Hammond Cat Alliance at which all the trouble began!

Savannah and her friend Iris were very involved with the activities and it had been Iris who had handled the money and then had counted and put it out of the area where people were congregating... When later she went to check, the money had been taken, leaving the box!

But that was only the beginning, because soon, a body had also been discovered in the bedroom across the hall! And nobody knew who that man was... Following the clues was a fun exercise and keeps readers involved... However, there is lots of
action outside of the crime...

For instance, how about having a cat whisperer be called in to spend time with Rags? Well, Rags had been safely tucked in that bedroom in which the murder occurred! Savannah had realized that something was wrong... She learned that Rags had been kicked...and...that Rags had seen the murderer!

Both Savannah and her fiancee Michael are veterinarians and so we have the opportunity to be involved with the birth of a new baby... It was an interesting side plot that the Cat Alliance was helping to raise funds for abused horses... The pregnant mother was in such bad shape that they feared she'd not make
it through the birth... Then Savannah takes some times to get back into riding...

But no matter what else was going on, Klepto solved the case, first by her natural kleptomania and then by her own personal identification of the killer! I loved it!

If you enjoy cozy mysteries, especially starring cats, I highly recommend this book! It was easily free-standing, but I'll be checking out the series as well... Would you believe she has 25 books in the series since I bought this second book! I picked up the latest to see how things have changed for Rags!

Patricia Fry began writing articles for magazines in 1973 and that's how she earned her living for decades. Her first book was accepted by a New York publisher in 1978. Every five years, or so, she'd evaluate the potential for her writing business and make adjustments accordingly. In 1983, she established a publishing company (Matilija Press) and began producing her own books. By the late 1990s, she was teaching publishing workshops. She wrote her first of many books for authors in 2000 and she also became a speaker at writers' conferences in many cities throughout the US. Around the same time, she hung out her shingle and started working with other authors on their book projects.

Nearly forty years after she began writing for publication, with forty nonfiction books to her credit and after working with many dozens of clients on their fiction and nonfiction books, she felt she was at a crossroads. Patricia reminisces about that period in her life. "All my friends were retiring. I wondered if I should, too. But how does one retire from something they love? Writing is not just a job, it's my passion."

The year was 2012. Patricia knew it was time for another career shift and she asked herself, "What writing dreams have not been fulfilled?" The answer came in one word: FICTION. That year, she gave herself a birthday gift--the time and space to write a novel.

She says, "The idea came rather quickly. And within a relatively short time, I was the author of a published novel, "Catnapped", the first in the Klepto Cat Mystery series." Every two or three months since, Patricia has produced a new book in the series. While you're urged to read these books in order, many readers agree that each book can be read as a standalone.

"I write these cozy mysteries with love and hope that you enjoy my stories." (Patricia Fry)

The Klepto Cat Mysteries

Rags and Savannah don't stay single long. After meeting Michael, a handsome veterinarian, Savannah settles down, but the cat doesn't change his thieving ways. Even though his kleptomaniac habit is annoying and embarrassing to his family, he has earned the respect of the local sheriff's department and he was even asked to star in a documentary.

Meet Dex! A Middle-School Chef! By Sheri Lynn Fishbach...

Looking at all the ingredients he had lined up for today's menu made Dex feel better. There was just no way to look at a ripe, red tomato without smiling. If was an example of nature's perfection and he knew how to show it the respect it deserved. He looked at the clock and grimaced, realizing he was running behind schedule...He took a try of piping hot cookies out of the oven and Marla snatched one. She sat down at the kitchen table, careful not to get in his way. There was a very big wheelbarrow in the middle of the kitchen, but Dex was used to working around it. He had no choice. It was his portable restaurant. The wheelbarrow didn't slow him down a bit. Marla was as unfazed by the wheelbarrow as was her son.
"A lot of orders today," Marla said, looking around the kitchen. "Is something special going on?" She didn't seem particularly interested. Most of her attention was being given to carefully rolling off her beauty gloves.
"Not really, I think people are telling people, that's all."
"That's the way any good business starts." Marta took a bite of her cookie. "It's word of mouth," she said as she took another bite, "And in a word--outstanding!"
Dex looked at his mother appreciatively. Growing up in a restaurant had made her a tough critic. If something didn't taste right she wasn't shy about making her pinion known and whether he liked it or not, she was usually right. He took both jalapeno raisin cookies and wasabi tuna parmesan subs off his debut menu when she said they tasted like hot, smelly feet. Come combinations, he was learning, sounded better in theory than in practice...

If you are one of those kids or teens that love food and food shows, as the book cover says, I guarantee that you are going to enjoy meeting Dex! I've been told that the book is part of a package now being developed which includes a screenplay, a TV pilot, and a title track song... Plans call for celebrity chefs in a variety of roles will be involved... But let's first get to know Dex and what he's been doing thus far in his life...

Dex was fortunate to be a member of a family who owned a restaurant and, of course, everybody was involved in some way... At the age of four, he was right there in the kitchen with his Poppy who patiently talked with him and guided him in learning how to do things there in the kitchen... I can just imagine his young thinking--I'm hungry. What sounds good to eat? And experimenting with food combinations until he found what was quite delicious!

If only Dex would have been there the day that everything changed. But nobody even knew that it had until years later... There had been a theft there in the kitchen...The theft of a very important recipe that had been developed by Poppy himself...

Poppy had since died and his grandmother was trying to hold on to the restaurant, although she had not shared the financial problems with the rest of the family... Dex was in middle school, already industriously working at his chosen career - Chef...

To start, he'd begun a gourmet lunch menu that he sold out of a wheelbarrow on his lawn.  He got up early every morning, made everything he needed for the day, and had it made, and sold, before he headed to school! His customers came in by car, bus and he also had standing orders for many of them... He was succeeding and becoming more well known...

But Dex wasn't a success at school--at least in the areas that counted to him! He had a serious crush on a young lady, Sarah, who was now involved with a jock, with muscles...That's all Dex could think about--if he just had some muscles, so he was saving his money from his food sales to buy an expensive machine to help!

Until then, he spent most of his time with two friends, Kyle and Liza and soon Lisa brings Jordy into the group... All of them love Dex's food and help whenever needed, especially Kyle... When Dex and Sarah was paired in their cooking class, it was at least the beginning... and the beginning led to Sarah, in an emergency, asking Dex to fill in to handle the stir fry table at her Bat-mitzah... Since I'd never been to a Bat-mitzah, I checked out what it was like...
So instead of being a guest, Dex was working...cooking for the crowd that was attending Sarah's special event. Ahhhh, but a man was attending that event and saw that Dex was drawing a crowd of people as he was responding to their food requests! And he liked what he saw! And the rest, of course, is history, since Dex was next offered his own network TV show!

Exciting yes, but Dex was extremely nervous, so he scheduled a rehearsal with his friends at home so that he could get used to an audience...
Dex stood behind the kitchen counter assembling a line of ingredients and utensils. His rehearsal had to be authentic and he knew cooking shows always had than kind of stuff prepared in advance. That was the secret behind a meal made on TV being ready to serve in a half hour. Dex knew that with all the chopping and measuring he needed to do, he would have to add on at least another half hour.
The only thing he decided to save for his audience was the chopping. He knew people liked to watch a chef dice onions, grate ginger, and smash garlic. Maybe it was the speed and precision, or maybe they were waiting to see a professional make a mistake. He had to admit when Geema forced him to watch figure-skating, he counted on someone doing a butt-flop.
But that wasn't going to happen to him. There would be no flopping of any kind. He had gone over the recipe a dozen times and he was more than ready to cook...
"What's she doing here?"
"You like her. I invited her." Liza smirked and gave Dex a little pinch on the cheek. "You can thank me later, doughboy."
"I will," Dex groaned, with a nervous smile. He walked behind the counter and took a few deep breaths hoping to quiet what felt like an octopus clawing at his gut. Just start, he murmured to himself. Pick up a spoon, an onion, grate some garlic; do anything but stare at Sarah...
"Meatballs!" he shouted, realizing his little misstep. After a moment of hyperventilation, he continued. "Let's go back to the sauce," he said, regaining composure. "Now when you make tomato sauce, be sure to use the right utensils. I've got my own favorite wooden spoon, right here. My Poppy gave it to me."
Dex lowered the spoon toward the pot, but a surge of hot steam burned his fingers. "OW!" he yelped, letting go.
The spoon plopped into the boiling pot, and red hot tomato sauce splattered all over the counter and his apron. Dex did a pained dance as some of the burning sauce hit his head, and he smacked himself a few times to get it off. Jordy couldn't contain his laughter and Liza punched him on the arm...
"I can't do this!" Dex pounded his fists on the counter...
~~~
Then he had his first successful show on TV! And that's when the trouble started! The villain of the story appears and starts a campaign to sabotage Dex... and when it still wasn't going right, Dex was blackmailed to sabotage himself!
I've got to admit, I'm not much of a cook, so I was learning about some really strange menu options in this book. You may even want to try some of them, although there are no recipes for readers. But, really, that's not the purpose of this book. Readers are meeting Dex, learning of his expertise, and solving a long-ago mystery that has led to the financial problems that are plaguing the family now. Will they lose their restaurant, what you might call Dex's inheritance--his future sometime when he's older?
You might have guessed it, but there's a lot of humor throughout the book, some laugh out loud, especially as Dex meets his problems at school... There is a great side story as Dex's sister begins school and complicates matters for Dex, as she decides to make Dex her film project...along with finding herself a nice young man! Another word about the characters. I was pleased to find many different friends for Dex who showed true caring and loyalty to each other. The book definitely is a great example for middle-school and older students, as well as a fantastic introduction of the possible love of cooking that children may find with Dex as their mentor...Dex was even being asked to autograph frying pans! Cool, right?!
Do check this book out for your children in grades 7 and above, although personally, I think some children who are interested in cooking already, even with lower reading skills at this time, could easily find enjoying the book with parents reading along! Highly recommended...
And by the way, on New Year's Eve when everything was over, Dex was right there, doing what he dreamed of doing when the clock struck midnight... Loved it!
Right to an Attorney Challenges Reader With Complex Story Wow!
An upfront comment... I had to work to read this book... There were many characters and I found I couldn't keep them all straight. Because of the story, however, I could see why there were so many, and I was able to follow the storyline without worrying about learning the names of the characters, except for the main ones. Once I made that internal decision, I discovered what an amazing book this really is... If you like psychological thrillers and can accept a writer's challenge to follow the story where it is leading, then you, too, may find it just as fascinating as I did...
“My research tells me that you have state and federal licenses and that you also practice in California.”
“Yes. I moved here from California four years ago. Did the crime occur here in Pennsylvania or in California?”
He said, “Here. Harrisburg. I’ll eventually face more unrelated charges in California. I’ve already retained counsel there, though I haven’t met her yet. I’ll need for you to assist with that case as well.”
Janet shut her eyes tightly then quickly opened them. “Let’s start over, this time from the beginning. The two homicides…”
He grabbed the newspaper and opened it up to page 3A. He folded the paper below an article then gave it to her. “Read the story about the missing investment banker and his driver. They’ve only been reported as missing, but pretty soon the cops will eventually investigate it as a double homicide. I believe this because a white guy named Eric Adkins will likely tell the police that I killed them.”
Janet was reading the article but stopped and said, “And why would this Eric guy say such a thing about you? Try to answer that without incriminating yourself.”
“Well, I owe him some money.”
“How much money?” “That depends,” Dexter smiled, “on how much you think is fair.” She began reading again but stopped and said, “How much does Eric think is fair?”
“About $ 3.3 billion.” She looked up at him. The number caught her attention only because she’d heard it more than once this morning on her way to work. The $ 3.3 billion investment scam had been all over the radio.
He leaned forward, gently pulled the paper from her delicate hands, and showed her the front page. THE $ 3.3 BILLION TRAFFIC STOP. “You can read about the traffic stop first; it’s more interesting,” he said. Janet studied him, looking for signs that this guy was just playing games.
He said, “Why the silent treatment?”
“I don’t know if I should take you seriously.” She didn’t mean to say that. Actually, she meant to say it but it came out wrong. This could be her career client. She would have to be careful with her words, careful not to run him off to another lawyer. “I mean, are you kidding me?” She smiled.
“How much for a high-profile double homicide?”
“Why don’t we wait until you’re charged before we talk numbers?”
“How about we do this my way? Give me a price or decline representation.”
She held his stare for a few seconds. “How does a half million sound? That would also cover my investigators, experts, and…”
“I have a better idea.” He opened his briefcase, removed two documents and four stacks of hundred-dollar bills, and dropped the six items on her desk. “That’s $ 100,000 cash, just to get you to take me seriously.” She was definitely taking him seriously now. “That’s yours if you agree to do everything my way. I’ll pay your fee of $500,000 as soon as I’m indicted, and you’ll get another 2.4 million if I’m not convicted. All of that includes your assistance with whatever charges I may face in California as well. Any questions?”
Right to an Attorney:
A Psychological Legal Thriller
By R. Sims
Dexter Parker had already started working on the whole plan many months ago... An a brilliant financial high roller, he had the contacts, the background, and the charisma to persuade... I thought of one man who would easily play the part--Denzil Washington. Denzil who has been called one of the Bad-Ass actors of all time. Readers might find that Dexter Parker would fit in that badass category too... Cool, sophisticated, and...B A D...
Now I wouldn't want to see a steady of diet of the bad guys winning, but there is a softer side of Dexter that comes through as the story goes on, especially for responding to the needs of a certain charity... So, I have to admit, I was watching this Dude soar through every glitch that came up and, with the help of his attorney, Janet, played by Viola Davis.... I picked her as soon as I'd read the court scenes... Janet is a beginning but also intelligent lawyer who, when she starts negotiating for working with Dexter, soon allow her mind to wander far from the money he's offering as she explores his physical presence and how she's feeling about being with him...
At that point, I should point out that there is a number of explicit sex scenes, as Janet lets Dexter know that she requires much more than the job, the money, and him... She requires her own...satisfaction... Quickly I should also mention Dana, another female lawyer who is being interviewed and hired, but... well, let's just say, she's not part of Dexter's life later in the story... And, oh yes, just one other little tidbit that plays into their relationship... Dexter is looking for the future mother of his child... Whew!
Readers are brought into the book as various criminal partners to Dexter are being discovered... Some talk, some blame Dexter as the bad guy, but readers think that Dexter is already aware of what they people might do...Is Dexter also able to evaluate the psychological strength of each of his connections? Readers will begin to think so...
Especially when you consider that a small group of people were able to successfully sell, scam, and steal billions of dollars from some fairly high profile mega-dollar investors!
Now, I have to tell you that when you're talking about hundreds of thousands and more dollars used to pay for each and every thing that must or could happen during such a money scam, that goes well beyond my ability to comprehend...I mean, do you even have to keep any type of accounting process when there is that much money available to you? LOL... In any event, Dexter is shelling out money to as many people that are in the book...so many, that you'll never remember their names...maybe just what they were paid, LOL! For instance, students were being hired at $1000/day to march and support Dexter in front of the court house during his trial...
And, about that trial, Dexter was doing all the planning upfront as to when he would be willing and able to start dealing with the legal system... Of course, by that time, the biggest investor in the scam, who'd lost $1Billion had made his own arrangements about getting his and all of the rest of the money! And that's when the kidnapping comes in...
But who, exactly, had that money and where was it?
R. Sims has put this book out for feedback and comment...He has placed the main character as a criminal, yet shows the good he is trying to do. We wonder, what will he do with the last billions he'd stolen? I think I'd like to see more to find out!
At first I thought the author might be a woman...his two female lawyers were written to be strong characters who were willing to both meet Dexter on his terms, as well as to demand their own. No matter whether male or female, he has shown me the ability to create an empathetic and contemporary female character...
As mentioned earlier, I always root for the good guy, so while I cannot personally support the actions of the main character, I cannot allow that to detract from the brilliance of the plot, the writing, the continuity, and how each action and most words push the story forward... I can easily applaud the author's writing, and commend the story in response to his upfront statement of his art following today's world... As many know, I read many similar stories which focus on today's world events and I believe this author has captured, through his experience, the ability to become well known for his writing choices... I recommend him as an author to watch as he publishes his already-written books...
RIGHT TO CONFRONT HER: A Female-Driven Revenge Thriller... was released Friday, December 9, 2016, as an e-book (now with Kindle Unlimited participation). RIGHT TO AN ATTORNEY: A psychological-Legal Thriller That Will Dupe You Senseless... was released November 3, 2016, as an e-book and a paperback (also with Kindle Unlimited participation). The next R. Sims thriller will be released in late March 2017.
While most thrillers are written from the perspective of the good guy, an R. Sims thriller could focus on life from the bad guys’ point of view, and the bad guy could actually win every once in a while. And, because human beings are so complex, sometimes the bad guy might actually be the good guy as well. Just trying to make art imitate life whenever possible. You have been warned.
Just want you to know what my thrillers hope to establish. Having pointed that out, I am asking you all to judge my storytelling and editing skills, and try not take anything personal. Can I write well? Can I tell a good story? I invite you to fairly criticize my works based on those two things. I write thrillers, so don't be surprised to find violence, unethical behavior, corruption, deception, lies, vivid and explicit sex scenes and some extra homicides. Just another warning. But I can promise you the story will be well-written with multiple plots that all tie-in seamlessly.
