Willem Pain's Tattoo Fascinating Romantic Tale With PTSD Twist...

Note: This Tatoo is my Selection Based Upon Story.
 It is not described in detail in novel...

"Tell me more about the tattoo," Dana suggested.

"It'll take your mind off the pain."

 "I did learn one thing in getting this tattoo. Truth is like air. You can hold your breath all you want, but when you stop the air's still there."

Spenser's remark felt more like an insinuation directed at her. It made Dana uneasy and eager to redirect his focus from her to him. "So what happened? Last time you said your dad had shipped you off to Hawaii," Dana said as she continued to work on Spenser's back. "You promised me last time to tell me all about it. Tell me about Hawaii. I've always wanted to go there."

"All right, as long as you keep massaging."

"I arrived on Oahu a year to the month after the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. December, 1942. At that time the city of Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, was where everything was. Pearl Harbor, the city, everything. The other islands of Kauai, Maui, and the big island weren't even on the map. The Navy had pretty much gotten things straightened out, although there was still a lot of confusion. War is like that, confusion and death. Along with a large dose of incompetence as I later learned...

Cool Book! Thoroughly enjoyable read with a heartwarming story running underneath... I loved the guy with the Tattoo...You will too is my guess... Don't miss this one. It's a memorable tale...

Dana is a battered wife of Kirby. She is also a masseuse and makes the money for the family. But that doesn't stop him from hurting her, mainly while he is drinking. As of now, she has not filed
charges against him, even though the Sheriff is quite willing to take him in... She had learned to become a masseuse because her best friend, Belinda, operated a shop and would give her a job.

Although it had been another bad night, Dana dragged herself into work and was immediately asked to take a new client, from the V.A. Hospital. But when she went into the room, he was sleeping and having a nightmare, crying out just as she was near him, yelling and scaring her into falling back, knocking over a table. He immediately turned around and grabbed her, asking, "Who are you?"

 Nick and Kirby both looked at each other and
 then at Dana. "Sure we'll drop our charges,"
Nick agreed. "I mean, we'll still have to testify.
 It's the local DA that's prosecuting Spenser.
 Not us. But we'll do everything to let the court know
 that Spenser was just crazy.
That he really didn't mean to hurt anyone."
"So Spenser won't have to go to jail? Just
 some psycho ward or something? Right?"
 Dana confirmed. "That's the deal my attorney
 has worked out with the DA. All they need is your
 corroborating evidence," Nick reassured her.
"My attorney will present your testimony to the
 DA and then he'll just go over it with you
 on the stand. Just like they'll do for us.
My attorney thinks that if we all tell th
e same
 story the chances are real good that Spenser
 will be judged incompetent. Makes sense?"
"Okay, that makes sense," Dana agreed as she got
 up from the table. "Call me at work to let me
 know when and where to meet your attorney."
Dana began to leave the table and then turned back.
 "And what you said before still stands?"
"What's that?" Kirby and Nick both replied.
"That Kirby will sign the divorce papers."
Nick and Kirby looked at each other with
 indecision and then at Dana. "Yes. Sure.
Of course.
Right, Kirby?" Nick replied as he
 gave Kirby a stern look. Kirby nodded
reluctantly. "Before I testify," Dana
 added before she turned and walked away,
her heart beating so fast that she had to cover
 her chest with her hand.
~~~
After an unusual introduction, Dana was able to get everything settled and she began to massage Spenser. She was immediately drawn to the tattoo that covered his back, especially since he had requested most of the lighting be turned down--the tattoo was not the only alterations to his body...
Soon, Dana was the only person he was willing to have work on him and she began to ask about the tattoo, how he had got it and about his life...  Of course, she only learned as much each time as an hour permitted, so she waited anxiously to learn more, especially about the tattoo since he had refused to do anything, but start from the beginning--when he had entered the armed forces...
And then one day Kirby came to the Hospital looking for Dana and Spenser was there... Needless to say, Spenser stopped Kirby from doing what he'd planned to do. And not only that, he offered his old trailer for her to live in!
At the same time, a friend of Kirby was telling him he needed to keep on good terms with Dana, especially since she was working with Spenser, who owned a major land site that had beachfront property...
One Fortunate thing had come out of Kirby's abuse. Dana had made friends with her physical therapist and hoped for more...
But, of course, nothing could be considered as long as she was still married. And then she got a request that she couldn't refuse...
Nick, a real estate agent, and Kirby promised that Kirby would sign divorce papers if she would tell them about what she was learning from Spenser during his massages. They hoped to figure out how to get him to sell his property or at least a right of way to the beachfront.
Then they realized there might be another way, considering that Spenser had already attacked Kirby. They figured if he could be proven to be incompetent to handle his affairs that they could maneuver something to benefit them. So they were exploring more, trespassing on his property...
Spenser instinctively bent down, not sure of what he had heard. Suddenly the sound of Japanese language mixed with the flashes of explosions rocked the trailer. Spenser fell to the floor, unsure of what was happening. The angry words of Japanese filled his ears along with the reverberation of what sounded like bombs. Spenser felt himself slipping away as his present reality became Nggela Island in the Pacific so many years in the past. He looked about the trailer for a weapon, breaking off a broom stick before he scrambled out of the front door.
"Once outside Spenser was greeted by a hail of explosions that seemed to light the sky, the shouts of Japanese troops seemingly everywhere around him. Spenser dove into the thick grass and looked about not sure of where his enemy might be.
"He looked down the road and spotted the faint outlines of two vehicles in the distance. Without hesitation he knew what he would do. Disable the enemy before killing them. Cut off their retreat. Spenser moved silently through the tall grass as he made his way toward the vehicles under the thunder of explosions overhead. He rolled under the fence and crept to the rear of the car, first making sure that no sentry was visible. Spenser used the broom handle to pry open the gas panel from the car and quickly unscrewed the gas cap. He pulled off his tee shirt and tore a measured strip of cloth from it. Spenser stuffed it down the gas line and then repeated the process to the truck that stood nearby. He flipped open his lighter and lit the strips of cloth before rolling back under the fence. Spenser spotted the area from where the artillery was being fired. He decided that whoever was there would be his first kill when his diversion took place. Spenser crept back through the tall grass, retracing his route past Dana's trailer just as the truck exploded in a hail of fire. It was followed immediately by the car. Both vehicles soared into the air as if catapulted by a rocket, only to fall back to earth in a mighty ball of fire. The explosion happened with such fury that it knocked Spenser to the ground, freezing Nick and Kirby in their tracks. Bits of flaming debris filled the air like molten snowflakes as the cloud quickly overtook Spenser's and Dana's trailers. Spenser pulled himself up from the ground and shook the cobwebs from his mind just as a lighted ember was blown under Dana's trailer. The spark was just enough to ignite the cloud of gas that had been gathering there. In a heartbeat Dana's trailer exploded with the fury of a twenty-ton bomb, the trailer bursting apart like a smashing pumpkin. The power of the blast lifted Spenser in the air and threw him several yards through the illuminated sky...
!!!
And with his drinking and dreaming, Spenser himself created the situation for his arrest...
Spenser's story is sadly poignant and as Dana listened, she became close to him, loving him as a father--he had done everything he could to make sure she was safe...
But Dana was still so afraid of Kirby that she was willing to do almost anything to get free from him, and possibly begin a new life.
I found it interesting that the Tattoo was never described, although we do hear how Spenser had received the tattoo--and it wasn't at his request! LOL Sometimes you just have to take the bad with the good I guess. "When" you read this one, let me know if you think I chose an appropriate substitute for when, where, and how he got it...
Spousal abuse and PTSD--two major issues in today's world have been effectively spotlighted with realistic characters, as well as how the potential interaction with those individuals might actually occur. The ending was far from what I expected, but I loved it! Highly recommended for romantic suspense of a different kind...
The Beatles Last Album Molded Around Family Saga by Chad Gayle... "Awesome!"
..."But for now, now that the song is ending, it's enough to nurture what she has,
the memories that will always be hers.
"It's enough to let it be."
~~~

Let It Be
Chad Gayle

Even if this novel is not based somewhat on an actual family, readers will feel that it is... Primarily written by the mother, although both the daughter and son take over as well. For instance the daughter opens the novel with a...simple?...fact...
"When my brother was ten years old, he almost killed a man..."
 It is never easy to decide to proceed with a divorce, even if you have an abusive husband. Most times it's about the children and how it will affect them.

It was no different for Michelle when she filed for divorce and moved to a home near her brother.

It was the year that The Beatles' last album came out. Michelle had fallen in love with their music, even though she could only afford that one album, which she played all the time...

But when her husband lost his job, he pawned many of Michelle's personal belongings, including that album...

"One After 909" reminded me of their situation since Bill was the type of abuser that could be very nice, apologize, ask forgiveness, be much more involved...and then would go back to his old habits. Michelle had left one other time, but had not taken the kids. Bill told Joseph that this was just like the other time, that Michelle would come back to him and they would be together again...

"There's a track on Let It Be called "One After 909," a groovy tune about a guy who's trying to get with a girl that's on a train he can't seem to catch. To a thirteen-year-old girl like me, it seemed like a cool number, even though it was old news, and I had fun with it whenever it was on; I thought it was a great song. Joseph hated it, however; for my little brother, "One after 909" was a meaningless, worthless lyric that wasn't about anything, that was nothing but a ruse, and he was willing to argue this point for hours, which should tell you something about my brother. He was a smart kid, but he was a smart kid who could be ruthlessly stubborn when he was convinced that he was right and that someone else was wrong...

And that is part of the reason he got into big trouble...

"Get back, you stupid turd!" she shouts.
"I call Joseph's name and he stomps into my room, muttering to himself.
"What happened?"
"He shoves his hands in his pockets. "Pam kicked me."
"Why did she do that?"
"Because I pushed her..."
"Bill used to spank them whenever there was any punching or kicking, regardless of who punched or kicked first. That always bothered me, but I couldn't say anything about it; if I did, he told me that I didn't know how to discipline the kids..."

Joseph was very interested in all things related to astronomy, as well as art. His mother would take him to the library to get him the adult books that he would study and then draw...But he loved his father and he wanted the family to stay together, or, if it didn't, his father talked to him about living with him... He talked to him many times, asking questions to keep up with the family events...and more...He was also calling Michelle at work for which she'd gotten in trouble. Her boss was quite demonstrative in explaining how to just hang up whenever he
called...

 "Now, I realize that some of the women who work here are going to go to the powder room every fifteen minutes, but I can allow that. And I can excuse some of the others for spending half an hour of each and every morning gossiping like a lot of chickens in a henhouse...But what I cannot abide, what I will not stand for, are women who make personal calls from this building while the salesmen up are doing their damnedest to make the sales that pay your wages. The first tear rolls down my cheek... "My husband, sir. My ex-husband." I try holding my breath, but it doesn't help; I hate myself for letting this happen, for crying like a child...I've asked him to stop calling me. I tell him every time, Mr. Maxwell...
"So it's his fault? Is that what you're saying?"  Of course it's his fault. I want to get up on the desk and say this over and over again, proclaiming it to the world, but I only shake my head...
~~~
Home wasn't any better because Michelle had to leave Pam in charge after school and when she had to leave for a short time. Joseph was getting upset, especially when Pam made a friend and spent more time with her. But then when Bill was due to pick them up, it really started and before long Bill had punched Michelle in the stomach...and more...
"Then I hear Bill's voice behind me, and I turn around as he comes through the gate.
"I've had it with you, you crazy bitch."
"He punches me in the stomach, hard, and I fall. I watch him stretch over me as he blots out the sky. I can't see his hands, but he's pressing down on me, and he has me pinned to the ground. He's crushing me, and I grab at the earth, but all I can find is mud that I dig through with frantic fingers. I reach out for the face that I hate, smearing wet silt over his nose, his round cheeks, and this his hands are at my throat, squeezing my throat so hard that I have to cough but can't."
"The outline of his face begins to blur..."
~~~
While, at the same time, Michelle had started dating Dan...who was the sales manager where she worked...

But Bill had quite a different plan for Michelle...and he was quite willing to involved his son...

The totally surprising ending of this novel is one that could not easily be projected. The first page gave us a hint, but I never picked up on what that could mean. And in the end, Michelle could only say...Let It Be...

Beatles Fans? A must-read recommendation! For me, there were a number of these songs I had never heard. I was able to totally get into the book and, only later, added the music. So don't worry if you, too, don't recognize the song/chapter headings. The mother's love of the music is an integral part, but the story line will have totally pulled readers in so that those who don't know the music will not miss understanding the novel. Still, I hope that including the vids will help you enjoy this extraordinary story of a family who is...no more... all wrapped up in music...

For Christian romantic fiction...this one's a winner!

spectacular Montana skyImage by justinknabb via Flickr
Consider reading McKenzie, the first in
the Montana Skies Series...
Kaydie:
Montana Skies Series

By Penny Zeller

I received Kaydie via a giveaway on Susan Holloway's Blog--what a delightful surprise!

Although this is historically set, I found the novel more character driven...they are remarkably created, so much so, that you feel you know the individuals personally. All of them could easily be found in today's world, albeit with slightly different stories.   I love characters to whom you immediately respond, either caring for them, or loving to hate them, don't you?

Kaydie (Montana Skies V2)Kaydie was a very proper Bostonian, born into a wealthy, connected family. Somehow two out of three of the daughters found their way out of the social structure...all the way to living in Montana!

Kaydie had stood up to her parents and had married Darius Kraemer, a man who completely changed after he had access to her inheritance and had squandered it. Thereafter, he became abusive, even to the point of near starvation. Interestingly, her sister McKenzie loved her enough to make her own way to Montana to find her... How? She became a mail-order bride!

Now, after Darius had died, Kaydie was living with McKenzie and her new husband and an adopted son and expecting a child. At the same time, their parents were back in Boston, creating a false story about Darius, his death, and planning to bring Kaydie back home to be properly married and now fulfill the duties of being a member of the Worthington family!

"...the Worthington family has one of the most upstanding reputations in the State of Massachusetts, despire your unseemly elopement with Darius and McKenzie's reckless marriage to a rancher. We have already told the other families in our social circle that you married Darius, but we altered the details in order to protect your reputation. We did this from the moment you made the egregious error of choosing him as a husband. What else could we say? Our disappointment in you, as you know full well, was profound. Had our peers been privy to the frustrations you placed on your family by your foolhardy choice of a husband, the damage to our family's good name would have been immeasurable..." (p.36)

Isn't it wonderful how children can rebel and become somebody better, because, after all, there are many ways to abuse children...

Kaydie had been physically and emotionally damaged, however, by her first husband and she now vowed she could not ever think of marrying again. At the same time, she knew what would happen if she returned home.

But then she met Jonah, a ranch hand who lived there with the family.

Readers will enjoy the struggle Kaydie faces in overcoming her past. Especially because Jonah brought a similar background into the relationship. But both had something important that had happened in their lives--they had met Jesus Christ and made Him a part of the decision-making for the future. Soon they acknowledged their growing friendship and when it was time for Kaydie to have her baby, it was Jonah she wanted to stay with her:

"Jonah felt helpless. "Is there anything I can do?" he asked. "Anything I can bring you?"
"Can you..."
"Yes?"
"Can you...pray with me?"
Jonah gulped. She wanted him to pray out loud again? He still wasn't comfortable doing it, but if it would help to put Kaydie at ease, he figured he could give it another try..."

Many Christian books include internal dialogue and prayer, but I enjoyed the intimacy of the Christian relationships in Kaydie where often a character would ask another, or offer to pray for the other. Zeller's ability to seamlessly intertwine her faith into her characters' lives is exceptionally well done, so much so that you feel as if the faith belongs to that character alone...

For Christian romantic fiction...this one's a winner!

...'This is the most perfect summer day." Kaydie sighed.
"The summers in Montana are something to treasure," Jonah agreed.
"I reckon they are far shorter than the summers I was accustomed to in Mississippi,
but it makes one appreciate them all the more."
"I love how the Montana sky is so blue, and with not even a cloud in it,"
Kaydie said. "I just imagine the Lord dipping His brush in the bluest of blue
paints and using broad strokes to create the perfect sky..."

Review: Deception Explored By Brandilyn Collins in Novel Released This Month:

he hit me.Image by Bridgette Taylor via Flickr
     Deceit

      By Brandilyn Collins

Would it turn out well if {God} examined you? Could you deceive him as you might deceive men?
Job 13:9

God sees not as man sees, For man looks at the outward appearance, But the Lord looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7  (Book Front Pages)

Brandilyn Collins has produced another trademark book of Seatbelt Suspense, with her latest novel out this month, Deceit. It's another winner for this author--so be sure not to miss this one!

Deceit: A NovelJoanne Weeks is a Skip Tracer but this job is personal. Seven years ago, her best friend died. Joanne believed that her husband, Baxter Jackson killer her. Now Jackson's second wife has died, through falling down the stairs at their home; and Joanne is positive that she, too, was murdered. Problem is, nobody believes her--or, they don't want to deal with it!

Baxter Jackson is one of the richest, leading citizens of the town. He is a church elder and beloved by community members. But in Joanne's frustration and anger, she tried to convince the police chief to investigate the latest death. Being overheard, she was now reading the headlines, "Skip Tracer Accuses Police Chief of Shirking Duty." (p. 15) Now the town members, or most of them, were turned against Joanne!

Then as she was going home, she noticed someone was walking near her home--a hooded figure suddenly darted into the road as she was making the last bend in the road. Joanne quickly braked trying not to hit him, but she heard the bump on her right fender. Stopping, worried that she'd killed a man, she quickly got out and went to him to help, but he wouldn't let her...he interrupted saying, "You want Baxter Jackson?" (p. 25) Stunned, Joanne realized that the man was wearing a mask! But he went on, telling Joanne to find Melissa because she knew what had happened, claiming she even knew where the body was!

Now, of course, Joanne (and we readers) were sure this was some setup! But on the other hand, Melissa had been a teenager who was living with the Baxters at the time, taken in for foster care and possible adoption. Social Services had removed her when Linda disappeared, but Joanne realized that, indeed, Melissa might have seen what had happened to Linda, her foster mother and Joanne's best friend.

Using her skills as a Skip Tracer, she immediately turned to her computer and started the search! As Melissa is brought into the story, readers begin to learn what had happened those years ago, as a young girl was taken into the beautiful Jackson home, had clothes purchased and began to see potential for her future.

What Melissa also saw, and what Joanne had long ago found out one day when Linda visited her, was that Baxter was physically abusive and could possibly one day also start in on Melissa! He was smart enough to hit Linda on her back or other areas which would not show. Linda had pulled up her blouse in the back for Joanne once, but would never talk about it again. Nobody else had ever seen the cruel side of Baxter Jackson.

Joanne had nobody to help her; she couldn't find the man who had been on the road since he had been wearing a mask. But then one shop owner admitted to Joanne that he had always questioned what had happened--and he became involved in the investigation--as well as with Joanne, as they grew to care for each other.

But there was more than one individual using deception in this case. As more and more of the story becomes known, those willing to deceive, for money, for power, are all brought out into the open...with a surprise ending that was the biggest deception of all! Collins' willingness to highlight crime by a church elder has added a thought-provoking edge to this Christian novel! Very cool ending!

Brandilyn Collins has quickly become a favorite author for me. Deceit, however, with the suspenseful intensity and complexity forces me to go back and start looking for books I have missed  by Collins...I think she just might have become a must-read author for me!

Review: The Perfect Couple Not So Perfect...

The Perfect Couple

By Brenda Novak
MIRABooks
ISBN: 9780778326670
439 Pages

It’s a dog’s life! That is, if you live close to The Perfect Couple. This was my first Brenda Novak novel. Let’s just say that I didn’t immediately order the rest of her books as I would when I enjoy finding a new author.

The Perfect Couple, Tiffany and Colin, are next-door neighbors of Zoe Duncan and her fiancee, Anton. Zoe has become involved hoping that she will be providing a good, stable home for her thirteen-year-old. Even though Samantha really does not like or want him as a father figure.

And then Samantha disappears, perhaps kidnapped, perhaps a runaway. Zoe doesn’t care which; she is going to do everything possible to find her daughter. And if that leads to a separation with Anton...so be it.

Actually, Colin has never understood her attraction for Anton and when Sam is gone, he takes the opportunity to “support” her, putting together a search team from his office as well as other assistance.

And then gets upset when Zoe hires a PI and seems to become involved with him.

Given the title and that the book opens with what The Perfect Couple is all about, there is really little suspense, other than seeing how far the degradation of human beings can be performed by another. Since that degradation not only involved outsiders, but the wife, Tiffany, I found it a sad commentary of what is really a prime problem in today’s society, where spousal abuse is quite common. Perhaps there was just too much reality in this one for me?

Novak does have the writing skill to pull off her twists and turns. I did appreciate the inclusion of “The Last Stand” activities, including Jonathan Stivers, to somewhat counter-balance those seeking Zoe’s attention. And the book did keep my interest to read until the end. Still...it just didn’t sit well in my mind...

Includes youth and wife abuse—you decide whether you want to participate in reading The Perfect Couple by Brenda Novak. I give it a 4 for overall writing and storyline but recommend Novak considers her readers more in the future...If she wants mature women to support her, then we want more than Zoe, Tiffany, Samantha and the other “dogs” got out of this deal. Hating a bad guy is one thing...but wanting him dead by our own hands is another...
