Anna Klay Takes Readers Deep into the Memorable Raw, Dingy, Dirty Underground "Life" Within A Small Community

Prologue
The devil claimed me. He grabbed my face, holding
my cheeks with his long, knotted fingers, and spit
into my eye. And that nasty, gray phlegm oozed
into my veins and turned the blood black. When it
reached my heart, I doubled over and held my chest,
retching out pieces of black meat. I didn't tell a
soul. No one would've believed me. They would've
said I was crazy, but then, no different than what
they say about me now.
I've been watching the evolution of what is called Contemporary Urban Fiction, or Street Lit... And I believe that ultimately it will encompass much more than what is formally defined today. Take, for instance, this novel, which is set in a small town. It is not so much based upon racial issues but more on the societal parameters that are faced by those within a given community. Thus, for me, I see the small-town community, in which I grew up, just as inclusive as the city environment... These streets are just the opposite of urban, city streets...

Street Lit, to me, is getting raw and deep into the life that we faced when we were young. In my case and in this particular book, it included power and control, sexual abuse. as well as violence, within the community, family and/or the church. These are the issues that have tainted, torn, and/or shaped our lives for the good or the bad. By its nature, street lit confronts readers directly with the specific, individual environment... In this particular book, the setting was certainly a major part of the lives of the community...

I'd appreciate any comments on what I'm projecting to be a wider definition for Street Lit!

Broken Wing
By Anna Klay

This is a unique book that will speak to readers who will allow it to be just as real as the book cover warns. This is not horror--the crow is just a crow... Someone shot it one day... The boy cried when he killed it...

Who makes a young boy kill a bird? Not for eating--nobody eats crow, do they? No, this kill is purely to be mean, to cruelly kill just because you can. To show the power of the gun owner, the man who owns the gun and wants the boy to know the man has the power of that gun within him. He can kill the bird... Why, he can even kill the boy and his mother with that gun. In fact, he doesn't even need a gun--his large hulking body can be used just as effectively to destroy the body and the mind of those he wishes...

I know nothing about Tarot cards, so I found this interesting Cheat Sheet... I didn't have it during the time I was reading so I would study the picture on the front of each of the cards that began a new chapter, wondering how it related and whether it was illustrative of those who appeared in the chapter. For instance, the first chapter showed the picture of The Magician. Did he represent Ray Long who is the first character introduced
or was he the leader of the town in which he had just arrived?

I'm not sure knowing is totally relevant, except to say that this little town with just around 500 had a shop that sold readings and other metaphysical items...

It also had a whore house... actively visited on weekends... If there were other businesses or even a church, they apparently were not a major addition to the activities of the citizens... Two garages were there...and so was a tattoo shop... and a place to drink and dance.

Ray Long was the newest member of the community, not exactly a welcomed one but then there was not much of a welcome for any new members. Madam Charon, and Cinn, her daughter, were the most recent, coming a year ago, who had come to stay. Madam Charon owned The Spiritual Gate. On the weekends, she used another name to manage the whore house...

A young girl, by the name of Skye is the main character. She's the princess of the town--the daughter of the man who essentially owns the town of Pettington...Actually, her father was not a bad man--he had just had no idea how to raise his daughter after his wife left... He tried but she was now old enough to start living her own life. Had given up her job to work for him and had taken a job at The Spiritual Gate...

But Skye had never understood why her mother had left her and she could not give up her memories of the time she had been there and her need to reestablish contact...

At the same time Ray Long had left his home to get away from his abusive father...

Was it fate that brought these two together? Or was it just the unknown freedom that both had finally escaped and were running their own lives? But they did meet and fell deeply in love...

Until the constant daily gossip, which was essentially the main activity in Pettington, forced Skye to take another look at the man with whom she fell in love--and with whom she now found herself to be pregnant.

Afterward, they both laid still,
letting the cool fall breeze dry the
hot sweat on them both. Skye reached
over and grabbed Ray's shirt and rolled
it up into a ball to put under her head
as a pillow, when she felt something
hard in his pocket.
"What is this?" she asked as she held
onto the pocket of his shirt. "It feels
like a little toy soldier."
Ray laughed. "That's not a soldier,
baby. That's the commander."
~~~
If I was to stop there, you'd have the bare bones of the book. It is only when you add the emotional lives of these individuals that the book comes alive for readers--more alive than you may want to know about... Ray Long, for instance, was a seriously disturbed man, who tried constantly to ensure he didn't become like his father. He carried a little talisman of his mother's teachings and love--a small plastic statue of Jesus, who was almost unrecognizable from being rubbed and held, and prayed with...
They sat down at a table, which
was really a picnic bench, at the
edge of the dance floor. The
country beat filled the room and
bounced off the walls. Ray ordered
a bourbon and Code for himself
and a daiquiri for Skye. And as he'd
promised himself he would, he asked
her about working at The Spiritual
Gate. "Do you believe in that
hocus-pocus shit?" he asked.
"I believe we control our own fate,
but I can see the purpose for
whatever religion or faith people
choose to believe in. I imagine it
gives people hope. What about you?
What do you believe in?"
"I believe in the toughest, most
badass God there is."
Skye laughed. "And what has He
done for you?"
Ray wanted to tell her how his
God was going to keep him out
of hell, but he knew she wouldn't
understand. "Well, he's certainly
taking his time on buying me that
car," he said instead as he laughed.
~~~

On the other hand, Skye's mother had also been heavily into the metaphysical. Bonnie would take Skye out to gather rocks that could also be used as talismans and now she was going to be doing some jewelry designs to use her knowledge of the power each rock could provide.

Skye had never been to JZ's
when Ray asked her to go to get a drink and dance. But he was also interested in talking to her about working at The Spiritual Gate. Her mother's training was so very different than what his had taught him. But did it matter since neither of the fathers had demonstrated any real spiritual life to his children?

Unfortunately, it was in the bar when his flashback activities started to occur. A drunken man had grabbed Skye to dance. "Ray felt the adrenalin as it began pumping through his veins like water. His muscles tensed, and his feet became firmly planted in his place of comfort. And as the snakes inside his head slammed against the cage, he forgot about wanting to be someone else..."

No matter what comes to a child later in life, it is extremely hard to delete everything about childhood abuse from the mind. Both Skye and Ray had a parent who had no desire to show love that was expected by the child.

As these two meet, can love for each other and a child help or further hinder what they want in the future?

This is an amazing, extremely open and raw exploration into the life of a boy who was not only abused but watched as his mother was also. Once he found someone to love, however, and a somewhat routine event occurred, as a drunk approached his beloved, Ray was thrown backward to when his mother was attacked over and over... The cycle had once again begun...

The difference was that Skye was "almost" spiritually strong enough... Watch the tragedy of a young couple drawn together but torn apart by the community, the gossip, the violence and the sexuality that marked the lives of each and everyone in Pennington, a small town that slowly got back to normal when the "outsiders" were...gone...

This is not a novel to sit back and enjoy. It is alive with today's world, whether in a large city, or in a small town... Religion, or some sort of spiritual guidance is looked to for hope, while physical and sexual abuse is rampant and sexual diversions are a routine weekend for most... The question I was left with was whether it was really possible for those who have not given in to today's despair can really escape to find that hope and happiness...Anna Klay has imagined a "story about family relations, the need for love, the devastation of rejection, and the merry-go-round that keeps turning." She writes with the passionate openness of a writer who has something to share and the expertise and, perhaps, the experience, through which she can shape and creatively imagine this ugly world, yet lighten it with glimpses of the love and concern that we find everywhere, even in a town of 500 or so... A fantastic, memorable, and impossible to put down drama! Highly recommended...

Latest Mac Faraday Mystery by Lauren Carr Provides Outrageous Hostages, A Jealous Dog, A Ring...and Murder!

People are more what they hide than what they show. --Unknown

Stillman Mansion on Deep Creek Lake, Maryland

"Austin is back this year," Olivia said in rhythm with the pace she had set for her power walk.
Two paces behind his wife, Roland took note of the white stone mansion along the chilly lake shore. The mansion looked closed up. All was quiet, as it was with many of the estates along the lake in the early spring. With each passing day, the quiet was giving way to the snowbirds coming in to roost at their summer homes in the resort town of Spencer, located in the corner of Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland...
I wonder if Janice will be throwing her week-long Fourth of July bash with all her has-been clients this year?" Roland asked.
"I can tell you right now that I'm not going if that loser Lenny is there." Feeling her heartbeat slowing down, she picked up her pace.
"Come on," her husband said with a laugh, "Lenny Frost isn't that bad. He's really kind of funny."
"He's crude," she shot at him from over her shoulder...
The couple continued on their way. They had only made it to the other end of the property when Derrick's screams stopped them. The
young man was running out the front door and dropped to his knees in the yard when they made it back to the driveway.
Olivia rushed over to Derrick, who had his face buried in his hands. "What's wrong?"
Shrieking, he pointed to the door. Roland ran inside. Olivia's heartbeat was racing. "Roland..."
"They're dead," he said in a panicked tone while taking his cell phone out of his pocket. "Both of them. Janice and Austin...Janice wrote something in her blood," Roland said before turning his attention to the cell phone. "I'd like to report two murders."
"Her killer," Derrick spat out. "I saw it, too. Lenny. Why else would Mom have written out his name in her blood while she was dying? Lenny Frost did it. He killed my parents."

Twelve To Murder:
A Mac Faraday Mystery
By Lauren Carr

By the time Mac trotted up the steps
to the living room, Molly had ambushed
Gnarly from behind, chomped on his
tail, and pulled him back down onto the
floor when he had jumped up on the
front door to check out the visitors.
With a yelp, Gnarly whirled around
to get an earful from the white German
Shepherd...
His ears laying on the side of his head,
Gnarly slumped and gazed with big
brown eyes at the other dog who
returned to the kitchen with her
mistress...
~~~
Lenny whipped up the gun and
aimed it to Mac's forehead.
Edith, the barmaid, screamed.
With a growl, Gnarly jumped
to his feet...
~~~
I loved the title and cover of Lauren Carr's latest novel. Simple, but yet a portent of what is to come--Murder! And there are so many involved that the bodies are falling fast--faster than Mac is able to put the whole shebang together! Of course, there are many who are working with Mac, including Gnarly, who is called upon to use his former military training to help Mac! But still has time to get in trouble with his new girlfriend when he greets her after having been loaned out for...LOL

The two important reasons I enjoy reading this author is that her mysteries are complex. Readers need to be paying attention and looking for any clue she slides in, because you could very well miss them! The second is that there is an underlying feeling of humor that provides both a relief from the twists and turns as well as providing a love diversion. In this book, there is a very interesting exchange about marriage and then some internal soul-searching by Mac about the woman that sleeps in his bed...

And, of course, Gnarly... who, by the way, did "NOT" have a say in whether or not he was taken somewhere else just to be with another girl dog!

...he stepped inside to hear a baritone voice say, "Not
only do I feel violated, but I feel--these monsters stole
something from me that I'll never get back. I spent
four days handcuffed to a bed. I couldn't go anywhere.
They didn't just take away my freedom, but they made
me realize the true meaning of a word I had heard
uttered so many times without realizing what it really
meant. Victim. And I swear, with God as my witness,
that I will never again be a victim...
"Speaking in a manner that sounded eerily like
Andrew, the role in the first Mickey Forsythe movie
that had won him an Academy Award, Lenny Frost
told Barbara Walters about being kidnapped and
held for a million-dollar ransom...
"Seems the media has already identified their
prime suspect..."
~~~
Then, there are the hostages, which takes us back to the beginning, when Mac is called to a local bar by Lenny Frost who calls him by a name from a movie in which Lenny had played while in his teens! He was on top at the time but since then he had moved into drugs and alcohol as his daily acquaintances. He even claimed that the only way he could do his comedy club act was while using...
Lenny had been at the bar when the announcement came on the TV that the police had found the bodies of the Stillmans and that Lenny was named! This set Lenny into a frenzy and he immediately took everybody in the club as hostages, demanding to see Mickey Forsythe. Fortunately, the Sheriff called David, who, some of you may know, is Mac's half brother... They had both already been looking for Lenny due to the murders...
Just a word about the hostage "event." It's hilarious! And the police have no idea what to do when the hostages vote to have Mac leave and send in dinner for all from his resort!
But the medical examiner had already confirmed Mac's belief that Mrs. Stillman couldn't have used blood to write Lenny since she would have died too fast. But Lenny now taking hostages and seeking help from somebody who had played a role during the years he'd been kidnapped, confused everybody! Maybe...
So, while trying to solve the deaths of the Stillman family, which obviously placed their son as someone with a motive, and others who would have had a connection [Mrs. Stillman had been a talent agent for young actors], the cold case that had never been solved--that of who had kidnapped Lenny when he was a young star, and where was the money--all had to come back out for another examination!
..."Can I bother you for an autograph, Mac?"
Stunned, Mac stared at her with his mouth
hanging open. "Autograph? Mine? Why?"
"You're Robin Spencer's son," she gushed
while extracting a marker from hr bag. "You
are the offspring of a literary legacy. No one
in my book group will ever believe I met you
if I didn't get your autograph." She held out
the marker to him...
"You can sign it on my chest." To their dismay
she unbuttoned the top of her blouse and held
it open to expose the top of her left breast.
"Just sign your name right here over my heart."
~~~
By that time, bodies have started to appear, some of them likely part of the criminal activities. Can the entire set of mystery issues be solved? Why, of course, Mac wouldn't let something hanging when he's involved. After all, he's the son of the most famous mystery writer of all time! LOL

Hey, I think I was wowed more by the humor (which reminds me of another scene I loved!) than the mystery in this one... But then, again, I had to wait until the end to know whodunit...Tough mystery case, so be prepared... and, most of all, Enjoy!

Spending A Little Weekend Time With Favorite Author Iris Johansen!

Atlanta Airport
Dead.
Eve was dead.
The words kept drumming in Catherine Ling's mind as she walked up the gateway to the terminal. No matter how many times she told herself it was true, she still couldn't believe it. Not Eve Duncan. Not her friend, the woman who had helped to save her son.
"Agent Ling?" A sandy-haired young man was running after Catherine as she headed for baggage. "I'm Brad Linden." He showed her his CIA credentials. "Agent Venable sent me to pick you up and take you to the memorial service."
"Then go get your car while I pick up my bag." Catherine Ling didn't stop as she strode ahead of him. "And why the hell didn't Venable come and get me himself? I heed to have a few choice words with him."
He's at the service. It's going on right now. He didn't want to show disrespect. I'm afraid you're a little late."
"Because no one told me that Eve--" She broke off. He was gazing at her warily, and she knew she must be radiating all the ferocity and sadness she was feeling. There was no use ripping at Venable's errand boy because Venable had left her in ignorance of Eve's death or the search when she was kidnapped several days ago. He would only try to make excuses for the inexcusable. Yes, she had been undercover in the jungles of Colombia, but that didn't mean that she wouldn't have somehow extricated herself and come home to help find Eve. Venable should have gotten word to her. Ne, she'd had to find out in Miami when she'd retrieved her own computer and been hit in the gut with the news story in USA Today. "Just have that car out front and get me to that memorial service ASAP Linden."
...The actual story of Eve's kidnapping and murder was fairly cut-and-dried...Since the details were sparse, they had concentrated on Eve Duncan herself. Her background, her accomplishments, quotes from famous law-enforcement officials who had used her services. All were very worth reading, Catherine thought bitterly. It wasn't often that the media got a chance to spotlight a genuinely good person...

Silencing Eve
By Iris Johansen

When you pick up a recent book in a long-running series like "An Eve Duncan Novel", it's almost like coming home for a holiday. You know all the main characters and even some of the occasional--those who have met Eve and/or have received her help in some way, just don't forget... I have other Johansen books on my "favorite authors" TBR stack, but I had just picked this one up. Silencing Eve is the closing book of a trilogy and if you can't read them all, this book should be a must-read for her fans! OMG! I don't know how she does it, but these novels seem to get better and better! How is that possible?!!!

"He was the father of Kevin Relling, who was
assassinated five years ago. His son was in Special
Forces in the Army and turned very dirty. He was
working with al-Qaeda in Pakistan and blocking
the hunt for Bin Laden. He also indulged his pen-
chant for raping and killing little girls in whatever
city he found himself. He killed the five-year-old
daughter of General Tarther in Marseilles because
the general was trying to zero in on the al-Qaeda
group...
"The general went crazy and eventually hired a
hit man, Lee Zander, to find and go after Doane's
son. Zander killed him and hired a funeral director
to cremate the remains. Doane arrived too late
to grab anything but his son's skull from the
furnace...
~~~
"Okay, then that would be a reason for his
 kidnapping Eve. Doane wanted Eve to do a
recon
struction on the son's skull. Right?"
"I understand that she was doing just that
while she was his captive."
"Then why would the crazy bastard
kill her? She was smart.
If that job was the ransom he
wanted, she wouldn't risk her life by
refusing to do a reconstruction."
...We traced him to an abandoned
saloon there. When our units, Quinn
and Jane MacGuire were closing in on
him, he set off a charge that blew up
the saloon and half the town..."
~~~
Eve had been kidnapped and was still in the hands of the psychopath.  They had seen Doane take Eve into a Ghostown saloon in Rio Grande, Colorado and had not come out. James Doane had been in a safe house in Colorado but had escaped. Doane was the father of Kevin Relling who had been assassinated.

Later they discovered that the bodies in the explosion were probably  not Doane and Eve. But they kept that secret and announced her death. It was during the memorial for Eve that Catherine Ling made it to town, on the warpath for Agent Venable.

In fact, everybody was angry with Venable. They were sure he had acted without regard to saving Eve! Actually by that time, they knew a lot more about Kevin. They had learned that he and other al-Qaeda had more than likely planted bombs in two different locations somewhere in the U.S.!

Even though Eve's death was a hoax, hundreds of people showed up for her memorial and spoke for her. Of course, Quinn and their adopted daughter, Jane was there. And Jane had an interesting friend I had not met there as well...A young lady who could speak with animals... The man who had killed Doane's son was also there. There was considerable discussion about Lee Zander's possible connection to Eve; i.e., he could be her father. Both of Kevin's parents believed that and one of their plans was to kill Eve while Zander watched!

And, of course, Bonnie was there! For those who don't know, Bonnie is Eve's daughter who was killed many years ago. An interesting event occurred between Bonnie and Eve because of the action of Doane that I thought was a unique touch of this paranormal connection.

Talking of paranormal--just think about how the three pictures below have been connected for this story! Whew! Guess who saved the day?!

Okay, the rats.
And she didn't have much time. She'd have to open her mind and do a general
scan. Not pleasant. With rats, it was like
having your brain devoured.
She drew a deep breath and tried to armor herself. Then she opened her mind. And was swept away by impressions. Darkness. Hunger. Yellow teeth gnawing, Biting. Some short, some long. Try to isolate the rats with the long teeth. They would be the oldest. Rat's teeth continued to grow
until the day they died.
Savage, hunting, scavenging.
Where? Dark hallways, a hole near the scoreboard. Across the field and behind the kitchens of the refreshment stands...
Running. Clock. Wires. Eat the wires.
Run. Eat. Eat...
~~~
Lots of action, suspense, and surprises...a perfect break for the weekend or any time! Enjoy this one!
