Journey to Creepy Hollow this Halloween with Erika M. Szabo and Joe Bonadonna

Nikki, Jack, and Mister Bonejingles!
They jumped to their feet at the same time. “How come you can talk?” asked Jack, feeling scared but curious. “You’re not supposed to talk, Mister Bonejingles! You’re just a wind chime.”
“I am not just a wind chime.” Taking a step closer to get a better look, Nikki asked the silver skeleton, “Then what are you?”
“My name is Wishbone Jones.”
“Where did you come from and how come you can talk?” asked Jack.
Creepy Hollow - Find Celestria, Wormbelow!
“I come from Creepy Hollow, a land that exists in another realm,” said Wishbone Jones. “Never heard of it,” said Nikki.
“Of course you haven’t,” said Wishbone. “Few people in your world know of its existence, and those few are all children, just like yourselves.”
“Well, my name is Jack, and this is my cousin Nikki,” said Jack.
“I’ve been watching you two kids and it’s very nice to meet you both.”
Nikki took the wind chime off the hook and held it in her hand.
“So how did you end up here, on Grandma’s front porch?”
“That’s a bit of a long story,” said Wishbone.
“We have plenty of time before we go Trick or Treating,” she said.
“Well,” Wishbone began, “once upon a time I was a great warrior. I fought many battles until I was badly injured in the Troll War, protecting The Trinity of Wishmothers, who watch over Creepy Hollow.”
“You mean…you don’t mean you’re dead, do you?” asked Nikki
“No, I’m alive but I’m not a flesh and bone man anymore,” Wishbone told her. “I’m sorry.”
 “Me, too,” said Jack.
Nikki frowned and said, “Wait! Your body is silver. How can that be?” “The Healing Witch turned my body into silver in order to save my life. That’s how I became known as the Silver Skeleton of Celestria,” Wishbone explained with a cynical tone in his voice.
“What’s Celestria, Mister Wishbone?” Jack wanted to know.
“Celestria is the Realm of Spirits, where I live with my friends. It’s a cemetery in Creepy Hollow.” Wishbone cleared his throat with a metallic-sounding cough. “You see, in Creepy Hollow the spirits of the dead can live side-by-side with the living.”
“Awesome!” Jack exclaimed.
 “Wicked!” Nikki said, clapping her hands. “Okay, but now you’re a wind chime. So how did that happen?”
“Well, let me tell you, and I’ll try to make it as short as I can,” said Wishbone. “It all began with a Goblin named Hobart. Hobart was just another ordinary goblin who had fallen on hard times. He lost his job and his home and had no luck at all. So one day he went to visit The Trinity of Wishmothers and begged them for help.
Taking pity on him, the Wishmothers gave him a test in the form of three wishes. He was supposed to use the three wishes to help others, which in turn would help him and bring him good luck.
Hobgoblin and Tasmanian Devil
But Hobart was greedy and he used the three wishes for selfish reasons. He wished for wealth and power and fame, so he failed the test. When he wished for power his body turned strong and his new strength made him over confident and mean.
The Wishmothers tried but they couldn’t take away the three wishes they had granted him...”
Nikki and Jack hung onto every word Wishbone said as he continued. “First, Hobgoblin used his wealth to build a great castle, which he calls Crag Heap, and he used his fame to attract a large band of followers. Then he used his power when he and his minions took over Goblin Acres and locked the mayor in the Deep Dark Dungeon.”
“That Hobgoblin sure is one bad dude,” said Jack. “He certainly is,” Wishbone agreed. “But wait, there’s more. Hobgoblin wasn’t satisfied with all that he had accomplished. He wanted more wealth and more fame, but most of all, he wanted more power…magical power. So he summoned one of his favorite minions, the Tasmanian Devil, who helped him murder the three Wishmothers...

Three Ghosts in a Black Pumpkin:
Creepy Hollow Adventure 1

By Erika M. Szabo
and Joe Bonadonna

Nikki and Jack were wondering what to do until time for Halloween treat gathering! Nikki wanted to go to collect rocks since she was fascinated with them and that day, she found an especially beautiful shiny blue stone in the river... Jack on the other hand was interested in weird things and he always took a picture to post online, but when he came upon a large black pumpkin, both were excited and carried it back home to Grandmother's...

And by that time, magic had happened!

For Mr. Bonejingles, the wind chime, started talking and suggested that they not carve the black pumpkin. Well, once he got started, Nikki and Jack wanted nothing more than to learn more about a talking wind chime. Immediately Jack wanted to know why he could talk! (check out some of their conversation above).

But, it wasn't too long before Nikki took Wishbone Jones--that was his real name--down from the hook on the porch and they set off for Creepy Hollow! And wouldn't you know that that beautiful blue stone Nikki had picked up was the magical piece needed for them to go there! And if you held that stone and said the magic words, you could go too! Or you can travel along with Nikki, Jack and Wishbone, like me, to go there right now! Soon a whirlwind of color appeared and everybody walked through!

Whew! By this time I'm really enjoying the book...The writing is great. I always wonder how two writers work on one book. Erika Szabo has written many children's books, and this is Joe Bonadonna's first effort. I found myself comparing these magical books with the Harry Potter series. First, I found these more age appropriate and more exciting, moving more quickly into the fast-paced action. After all, Nikki and Jack had to be back home by Midnight when the the Ectomagic gate closed. The writing is edgy enough to spark an immediate interest and, for me, I was already hooked on the fantastic cover and internal pictures within the book and was so excited that the artist, Erika M. Szabo, was willing to allow me to share some of my favorites! The formatting and overall effect of the book is excellent, with each of the "spells" by the witches placed within borders for added highlighting!

Hannah - Ghoulina
Otto - Catman
The first place entered was Wormbelow and that's where Wishbone introduced us to two of his friends! We noticed right away we were in a cemetery! But here in Creepy Hollow, both the dead and alive, mostly magical creatures, are able to communicate. And the dead's ghosts float above the ground. In fact, we also met three powerful Wishmothers who had been murdered by the villain, Hobgoblin!

The never-ending story of good versus evil is played out as, now that Wishbone is back, there is new hope that they will fight to free the land from Hobgoblin. Each of the wonderful characters have a fascinating backstory that allows readers to know and get to appreciate their personalities and magical attributes. Hannah, for instance, who prefers to be called Ghoulina, and dresses Goth all the time, was in training to become a Wishmother before they were murdered. That was bad enough, but the three women were chained inside the Black Pumpkin which, thankfully, at least had been returned home, found and carried back by Jack. Jack, by the way, was enchanted, you might say, with Ghoulina who was already able and helped out when healing was required.

Using magic, as well as intellect in working to take back all that Hobgoblin had stolen in their land. Nikki and Jack were also to be involved, empowered by the Wishmothers with strength and uniforms, as well as three wishes to be used as needed.

And the adventure of their life began for Nikki and Jack...helping all good magical people fight against the injustice that Hobgoblin had done to Celestria.

After reading what happened, and how Hobgoblin came to his doom, I wanted more! So I went out and purchased the second book and completed it last night! Wow! Start with this first one, but don't stop until you read all the exciting events that occurs! If you wish you can get both stories in one book! Wish I knew that earlier, 😖! LOL!

My review of The Power of the Sapphire Wand will be posted tomorrow. This adult loved the two books and added them to the 2018 personal favorites list! You just have to check them both out! Highly recommended!

The Last Infection by Michael Garza May Become Addictive...Have you been Infected?

I think Zombies have been around forever and there are always fans, aren't there...but...once you've seen one zombie, or a group, is there more to be said about them? I didn't think so, until Michael Garza sent me his latest...

The Last Infection began as I expected...but before long I was become more and more interested. Why do we love to experience fear vicariously? And yet, Garza presents us with more than fear...

The main thing that Garza adds are the characters who are running for their lives. Even while they are running, their personal life issues do not disappear and that's what pulls readers in... The hope that there will be some to escape the terrible apocalyptic...

Last Infection
By Michael W. Garza

It had started out just like AIDS and other world-wide infections... sometimes passed on through used needles...not something that resulted in death for those who were infected... No, this became
worse... They didn't die, but they acquired the same taste as those
who died--the need for blood to keep them alive!

The infected were treated,  and others were placed in isolation, but no matter what, those who were helping them, even wearing masks didn't stop the spread..

But there was something different about those who had become infected, they were still in fairly decent shape and could move faster... If you watched their eyes, you saw some sign of life... and they could think... slowly, they began to evolve, adapt and communicate with each other... Worse, they had started to round up Zombies! What d they plan to do with them?

It happened much faster than any other plague; people died as soon as it reached an area and cities were empty, vehicles abandoned. If anybody was still alive, you would see them at the top of hi-rise buildings, having used equipment to block off the lower floors...

The infected had an awful look about
them and they made unnatural
lurching motions with their
arms that scared the heck out of him.
 He hoped they would give up...
~~~
Most everybody was gone now...If you were still alive and uninfected, you were being hunted... Jake and Alicen had always fought alot, over nothing and anything... Jake was the only one to help Alicen stay alive... They were now on their own, their parents had lost their lives as they tried to escape... Jake was now all that kept them from dying as well...
The news had called the growing mobs, the infected. Alicen and Jake heard terrible things from school and their friends. Some called the infected, vampires, because they wanted blood. Others called them biters because they chewed through your skin. Jake didn't know what to think. He only wished that he hadn't heard all the stories that were stuck in his head. "Don't let them get me," Alicen whispered.
"I want mama," Alicen said. "Hold on ," Jake said. "I told you we have to hide first." He spoke so low, he had to move his lips against her ears before she could hear him. "Please stay quiet." There was nothing in Jake's twelve years that prepared him for what was happening. He'd spent the last few weeks terrified, held up in his family home as his parent's tried to figure out what to do. The man on the news promised that they'd find a cure and this would all be over soon. That was three weeks ago. A few days later, the news and every other channel went black.
~~~

He swore under his breath. He'd let down his guard and fell asleep in what was a sporting goods store before the infection. The mistake left him trapped with only one way out into the rest of the mall. The quad outside the entryway was crawling with a group of infected. He'd counted two dozen, but more were coming. Their quick twitching movements identified their infliction at once.
                                                 ~~~
Chris becomes the lead character in the story. But no way did he want the role. He had made it through a major detox on his own and now he wanted to live and that required him being on his own...He had been living on his own, and able to stay alive, but he was being pulled in to help with the children--by a woman who just would not accept "no..."
A gunshot was easy to recognize and these days, someone had to be in real trouble to waste the round. Chris froze and waited for the echo to clear. He closed his eyes and turned in the direction of a new sound. His eyes sprang open and he ran towards the side of the building. The sound of voices, now screaming, guiding him and as he neared the front of the building, he made them out. “Get behind me,” a distinctively feminine voice cried. There was another gunshot as Chris reached the corner of the building. “Here they come, get ready.” Chris peeked out onto a parking lot in front of the store and found the woman behind the voice almost immediately . She raised a handgun and fired...
                                                                         ~~~

He had seen the two kids before but they had turned away from him. Now some woman was trying to protect them! The feeling of guilt swirled inside of Chris, eating away at him until he called out, “Come on,” Chris yelled. “Follow me.” From then on, whether he wanted it or not, Chris was the leader...working to get them all to safety. Where would that be? Well, Jake knew of an island... Catalina...

They had barely started on their way when they came up against a barricade...and were facing a different type of danger. A group of survivalist had so far been lucky. They had been living far in the woods and had not been infected. But now they were trying to keep it that way and they captured anybody who was not now ill. They quickly separated Chris and Jake and took the two females...they would become wives for two of the most loyal members!

But did they really think they would be free of those out there hunting...for blood?! Soon, the infected were coming and, much slower, zombies were following!

 At times through their journey, Chris' small group was able to join with others and, on the way, Jenn wanted to try to find her mother and father... Living and escape items, food, bandages, water...and gas for the latest confiscated  vehicle each brought a fight...with somebody... and, always, the zombies were coming up from behind...

And when they had made it to the building where Jenn's parents were supposed to be and climbed to the top floors, as hostages of those inside, they were already surrounded and the infected soon were working to get into the building... while Jenn, who had found only her father alive, Chris, Jake, and Alicen, joined with a few others, were moving on via a different route...

But would anybody really escape?

You know who you are, don't you... Zombie enthusiasts are bound to get extra thrills as new combatants join the war against the few humans still not infected... Will any escape? Or is it really the final ending of the world?

Michael Garza has gone well beyond the pure chase scenes in most zombie fiascos...If you enjoy bloody gore and freaky dead humans...do check out The Last Infection. While it's not my kind of thing, I believe Garza has done much to add depth, diverse, and character issues into the zombie savagery... What more could you want? LOL

Michael Garza's The Hand That Feeds Holds Readers in Suspense as Zombies Roam!

"Evansville Kansas
Alex's lungs burnt in desperation as he vomited a powerful rush of the rotten, black mulch. Unable to control his body, his bowels released and he felt a warm rush as he struggled for consciousness. In a fit of madness, he pushed with his arms, finding only enough strength to life his head. Pain wracked his eight-year-old body.
http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog
"He heaved with another powerful purge, the force of the motion giving him enough movement to flip himself over on his back. He coughed and gagged on the spewing sludge. The stench clunb to him, filling the pores of his skin. He lost the strength to move and laid in the darkness trying to catch his breath, as a slow burn rose from his feet, up his legs, and into his thights. Terrified and alone, he cried in between violent purges calling out for his mother. Alex fought against the pain. His feet were numb and the burning sensation sent writhing throbs into his spine. It reached his waist and he felt like his skin was on fire. He dug his fingers into the ground and turned over. He dragged through thick muck, struggling with every inch. Shrouded in darkness and guided by his memory, he pulled over piles of bones buried in the ground. By luck, he reached the chamber's edge below the tunnel entrance. It took every ounce of strength he could muster to get to his feet...
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UndeadChild

His fingernails bent and split as he fought against his body to get up into the tunnel. The climb ahead felt impossible. In near blinding madness, he wept, his face buried in the dirt. The head was in his chest and his lungs cooked with every breath. He was sure he would never see his parents again and the pain of it crushed his will.
There was no sense of time down in the hole. Alex lost his grasp of reality as the maddening heat worked its way into his neck and face. He pulled his way in the first chamber without the use of his legs. The final burrow remained and the smell of fresh air hit him with a powerful reaction.
"Alex pulled by instinct as the heat consumed his face and stole his sight. Visions filled his mind of death and decay. He pulled free as the burning took control and he screamed wildly in the night. He rolled on his back and howled like an animal baying at the moon. The guttural growls coming from him carried in the air and desperate ears heard his cries...
~~~
Alex had died there in the black mulch. It would have been better that he had stayed there in his unknown grave. We do not know, as readers, how Alex became one of the walking undead... Maybe everybody that dies in strange places, alone and frightened decide not to stay die. I don't know...
Do you? Then maybe you can explain what happened to Angela and John Mason, the parents of Alex, who had disappeared and had been missing so long that Angela "was consumed by her own madness..." Perhaps that is why she was able to hear his cries, his guttural growls--for by that time he couldn't speak...
Their doctor was his first kill... They had called him, rather than an ambulance, since he was closer. He had taken blood for testing and some of the dark substance that had changed his skin to a darker color. He had asked, but neither Angela nor John knew where it had come from...
By that time, Angela had begun to talk to Alex, rubbing his hair across his forehead and whispering that nothing was going to happen to him... And, it was Angela that had turned to John explaining that they needed to provide...food...for Alex... Did I mention that Angela had been in an institution in the past???
She had successfully brought a stranger home from a bar, but John didn't successfully do his part. He had gotten away, but not before their "dog" had bit him... So you know what was next!
I had given up zombie movies many years ago, but what I found in reading rather than watching movies, this book created much more suspense and the ability to follow an underlying story. There are some good chase scenes with John being in town and seeing how quickly the "infection" spread. Of course, officials called it a form of Ebola...but, then, they were already gone and there were few individuals left who had not become undead... Still John was able to escape, needing to get back to his wife and son...
By the time that was happening, Angela was quite bizarre--so much so that I began to see humor in it! I'm not disparaging the story--or maybe I am a little, because, maybe, I'm not a parent??? Soooo, what would you do about an undead son???
I enjoyed the hypothesis placed before readers in his scifi novel that truly does catch immediate attention (as above, don't you think?) I feel confident in saying that horror lovers will enjoy this zombie thriller...And if you want a "taste" of what to feed a zombie son, you can't go wrong with this one! Have fun!
Reggie Ridgway's Horror Introduces Readers to Scorched Earth Protocol...
Moon Shadow
The soldiers on board the C130 knew their lives were in danger when they joined the service. Pepper felt a tinge of regret for allowing his men to be in harm’s way; after all, he had trained them, knew their families, ate meals and even gone to church with some of them. They were more then soldiers, they were like members of his family. It was their sworn duty to sacrifice their lives for their country. It was, in effect, friendly fire, if he should do what he knew he had to do. And he did feel deep regret for the deed, but he also felt pride welling up. He was, at least in his mind, saving the world from a potential pandemic.
“Once more into the breech,” he whispered. He made the call at precisely 3 PM. He walked to the railing along the deck, looking around covertly before he dropped the burner phone overboard. If somehow it was ever found, it could never be traced back to him. Burner phones were good for that. If it was somehow recovered, the fingerprints and DNA would have long ago washed away.
The escort jet reported back to its headquarters that the Hercules C130 cargo plane exploded suddenly and burst into flames at exactly 3PM, and that tiny bits of burning wreckage was strewn for several miles across the uninhabited and desolate desert floor. No survivors were reported seen by the pilot in the escort jet. The C130 was annihilated.
The escort jet was ordered back to base and a search party was hastily deployed was made up of soldiers dressed in protective HAZMAT gear. When they arrived on scene, they reported they found no human remains, but placed every item they found carefully into a pile which was later incinerated and reduced to ash. No physical evidence remained of the Hercules C130, any of its crew, or passengers.   The fire ball in the air consumed almost everything anyway. Fire was the only way.
Mariah had taken the cruise to get away for awhile, never imaging that she would leave the ship in Alaska, get married...and die there...
She had been married by the Captain of the ship, believing the man she had met on shore would be giving her a good life. But as soon as he had her home, he changed, regularly abusing her, beating her... The only things that kept her going was her dog, Rusty, and her garden...
Ironically, it had been something in her garden that led to her death... But, it did give her, for a short time, the strength to kill her husband...
The neighbors had heard the fight and discovered what had happened, taking Mariah to the small local clinic. Unfortunately, there was no reason to look for the small prick of her finger that had happened in the garden when she found "it..."
Trevor Bentley was the local doctor, having a nurse to help and, later, a visiting biologist to whom Trevor had given space for research, studying the potential environmental impact of the installation of a new oil line.
While taking blood from Mariah, who had been unconscious since she was brought in, the nurse broke a vial and then cut her finger...that was all it took. Whatever had infected Mariah was now flowing through the bloodstream of the nurse.
Neither Bentley, nor any of those who became involved, could identify the cause of death--but they knew it could easily spread...and did...as more and more of the local people started to become ill...
And then a major twist of focus! CDC had no way to identify what had been found in the blood samples. The USAMRIID, a special group that had been put together to handle biological warfare was now in charge.
But what happens when the leader of this group sees the "disease" as the enemy? And people as containers of that disease...
Ridgeway definitely put together a multi-genre novel that focuses on biological terrorism--part romance, part thriller and lots of horror! The story line is unique, the main characters, Trevor and Jodie Gibson, the biologist, quite enjoyable as a couple who find attraction moving toward something else, at the same time, they are trying to stop an epidemic, and then later forced to fight for their own lives when the Army arrives...
There are some rough spots of TMI--too much information provided which forced readers to slow their pace, which should have been edited out, and one major omission, although that could be because a sequel is coming as suggested at the end, but...somewhere in Alaska, a large black stone with a gem pointed out could be the cause of...more deaths...starting with birds...
The book was strangely compelling, especially when spreading of the disease became all important--and only fire would ensure safety--the Scorched Earth Protocol... I think many of you will enjoy this, if you don't mind the need for a little editing...I know I did...
To Some of You - I Call This A Must-Read! You Decide!
The Armageddon Chord
By Jeremy Wagner
"I Write And I Rock"
Note: A contest to accompany publishing of this novel took place...I don't know if results have been announced but I listened to some of the available tapes. I selected the one shown above as the most representative (of the ones I viewed) of the book contents...and, no, I'm not into heavy metal, but this one "told" me more about the story...hope you enjoy it as an addition to this review...
I selected to read The Armageddon Chord based upon my interest in adventure tales of archaeological digs/hunts into ancient history and in end-time themed novels. But I must admit that when I read the description, and then started to read, adding music reminded me of the Charlie Daniels hit, "Devil Went Down to Georgia." In fact, the theme in the song is the basic underlying theme of the novel...but there comparison to the story line ends...
This book...rocks...is cool...or, whatever the latest slang is for a really great book! I thoroughly enjoyed it, although caution that you should expect some of the "routine language" that may be heard from some of our young these days... In the novel's context, it was appropriate, not overdone and should not be a deterrent to those of us who preferr not to listen/read...
Money and power drove the two men who were the major team for the dig at the Egyptian pyramid honoring Aknaseth. Helmut Hartkopff was the lead archaeologist; his past which had left him disfigured, knew the history of Aknaseth and wanted the power that was supposed to be buried there in the sands...
For Festus Baustone the Third, it had started purely to obtain more of the artifacts he acquired to prove that he was the wealthiest man alive, but, now, his goal was different, he was dying. And he was trying anything and everything to save himself. Baustone was seeking...immortality!
Mask of Tutankhamun's mummy featuring
 a uraeus from the
eighteenth dynasty
When Hartkopff opened the tomb, he discovered there that the legends were true--that Sethis, the devil, had come to Aknaseth in his dreams and promised to make him a dark prince, bringing Sethis back to the world. He gave specific instructions regarding sacrifice and the use of a special uraeus and musical tablets.
The sarcophagus contained a mummy, one who had a large build, was eight feet long, with a scaly, red, and leathery embalmed head twice as big as a normal human cranium. The mouth was agape, twisted into a silent scream... An ancient book, bound in solid gold rested on the mummy's chest...Helmut realized what the hieroglyphics on the papyrus pages were.
Before leaving the pyramid that day, Helmut had murdered those who had been there when the tomb was opened...
Reporting everything to Baustone immediately brought action in America--a talented guitarist must be found...
for the music that had been written by Sethis was to be played on an instrument to be built, designed long before the guitar had ever existed, and created for just one reason...
Kirk Vaisto was a genius on the guitar, the "ultimate madman" and had even become known as the "God of Guitar..." But he recently had started to have dreams that he knew were dark and apocalyptic, leaving stains on his soul...he knew one thing--"something malevolent" was coming because of who he was...
And before long, without even discussing it with Kirk, his manager had signed a binding contract with Festus Baustone... And by the time he had, first, translated the song, and then played it for the first time, the music had possessed him and his home studio, all electronics, his guitar--everything had been blown--destroyed...
This horror novel is not the norm...  Jeremy Wagner has used his musical expertise to mold an adventure tale of lost treasure, together with graphic depictions of supernatural power unleashed, and created a fantastic memorable key to how Armageddon could come...If you are the "least bit intrigued" by what I've provided here, I'll close with a must-read designation for YOU...
