OMG, when the blurb for this book said "action packed, pulse pounding psychological thriller/suspense novel", I didn't really think it would be--from Melissa Foster? Well, Foster has certainly put it out there this time and, believe me, the action begins and once started, you will be turning pages fast, wondering what was going to happen next! She has stretched herself into a true thriller writer with a villain that in almost unbelievable!
Now Melissa Foster, in an article published yesterday on my blog indicated that she was quite happy with her villain...
The only response from me is that I didn't "hate" him... But then, that is often the case in a psychological thriller since the character is often flawed based upon some major trauma in his life...
Roland is the villain Foster has created. He was moved out of his home when he was small, lived in hospitals or foster homes until he was old enough to be on his own and now works in a small town.
Marissa also lives there...
It had taken a long time for Roland to track down the documentation and follow the many changes that had been made, including name changes, but he would always recognize Marissa. "...die together." Roland's birthday was coming soon...He had it all planned, even a party...

"He pushed himself off the bed with a groan, arching his chest forward in an awkward stretch. Each day the waiting became more difficult, weighing on him, suffocating his thoughts. His greasy brown hair stuck to his forehead in thin strands as he turned to face the wall opposite the bed. The edges of his lips curled upward in a sinister grin...
"He reached one sausage-like finger up and ran it over the beautiful blond woman's hair..."Marissa," he whispered...

Kara Knight had applied for nursing school and couldn't wait to leave her hometown. She had discovered that her husband was involved with another woman and quickly made the decision to split. But her mother had seen Daryl as someone who could protect her daughter and knew it was important for her to have a man around. Kara had moved in with her and her new husband, but, although he loved Kara and her mother, he wanted his own space and time with his wife. Kara had moved out and now, possibly, had been accepted to school!
She told her mother, but as usual, she immediately started talking about staying in town, getting back with Daryl... That wasn't going to happen! Her present job at the Plant would soon be over--they were tearing the Plant down and already layoffs had been made...
It was in the Plant where Roland had explored in the dark, that he planned the birthday celebration.
..
But things didn't work out just as he planned...
As a thriller slowly turns to horror, Kara meets Roland...and is confronted with her past, her identity, her family's lies, and a man determined to have her...
The old saying, oh, the webs we weave...when we deceive...surely brought all of this about. Readers are confronted with choices recommended, made, and their results. Was it right in the first place, or could it all have been prevented? But, in the end, that is a moot point. Once a plan is set in motion, it must either occur, or be dramatically or traumatically altered. You will keep the memories of what happened in that condemned building far after you read this climatic ending.
This is undoubtedly the best-written novel thus far by Melissa Foster...but, then, I'm already looking forward to reading her next one that is coming out soon! If you haven't read her, this is a good one to start with, although each of her novels so far has been free-standing... Now if she starts a series, look out, because her characters are people with whom you get involved... Don't wait another minute, right now there's a sale going on... March 5-7th, 2013...Check it out!
