Responsive Poetry from Adolfo Caso - A Birthday: for Me!

I love responsive poetry...poetry that is written, inspired by a recent event, perhaps even partly, by my blog article wishing Adolfo Happy Birthday recently... If you haven't already read it, click over now and come back!

As I read this latest poem from Adolfo, since he starts with his first birthday party when he was 14, it started me to wonder what my friend might have looked like in his early years. So with Google's help, this is my mind's images for him...although the one at 14 was the only one about the right age and is not what I would have chosen...hope the pics engenders a bit of fun!

And then he was 14...solemn for his school picture...

A Birthday: for me!
By Adolfo (Al) Adolph Caso

Though fourteen,
And,
Much to my surprise,
New relatives and friends
Celebrated
The first Birthday in my life;
Thus giving value to Little Al.

Yet, I was the same person
As the day before,
One who hardly spoke English,
Who spoke a dialect no one understood.
And, yes,
My father named me Adolfo,
After Sant’Adolfo--
Sant 'Adolfo di Osnabruck
“No, No! I was named after Adolphe Menjou,”
I objected, knowing better in either format.
Adolphe Menjou
There was only one man with that name,
And it was Hitler’s—a real devil;
While he bears the name of a Saint,
I live with that name every minute of my life,
Happy to know:
Every human being is basically good.
No wonder my American friends called me Al.

All of us evolve according to a plan
That reveals itself as we become what we are;
And,
Regardless of whether we are men or women,
We can only comply with a single destiny:
On one hand,
Hitler was the worst example next to the devil;
On the other,
An infinite number of human beings
Regenerate themselves,
Every single one for the good of all.
On calling me Al,
My friends gave me a passport to: We, the people,
(As explained by Dr. King)
To a place in time wherein we develop from within
And not from frameworks
Of some saint, or, worse: the devil himself.

Now, more than ever,
With the celebration of my eighty-fourth,
I have become better aware
Of having fulfilled the attributes
Which have shaped me
Into the A D O L F O
That I am,
For whom
I proudly make this claim.

English Translation
What a wonderful thing a sunny day
The serene air after a thunderstorm
The fresh air, and a party is already going on…
What a wonderful thing a sunny day.
But another sun,
that’s brighter still
It’s my own sun
that’s in your face!
The sun, my own sun
It’s in your face!
It’s in your face!
When night comes and the sun has gone down,
I start feeling blue;
I’d stay below your window
When night comes and the sun has gone down.
But another sun,
that’s brighter still
It’s my own sun
that’s in your face!
The sun, my own sun
It’s in your face!
It’s in your face!

Dear Adolfo, you, my friend, could never be considered named after Hitler! And, I find, you are not an Al to me since Adolfo does indeed seem just right...

May each day continue to fulfill your destiny as Adolfo Caso, poet, photographer, author, publisher...and friend...

Toby's Tails Presents The Christmas Kittens Shared by Susan Keefe... to BRH and Invited Friends...

Merry Christmas! Welcome! Come In! I've invited a few friends in from Pinterest's Christmas Cats Community to hear about the new Toby's Tails books - The Christmas Kittens... But, shhh, right now we're hearing one of my guests sing my favorite Christmas song, O Holy Night... Isn't it beautiful?!

Hello, my name is Toby, I am a Border Collie and
I live on a real smallholding which is called
Fantasy Farm.
Exciting things happen here all the time, but in
this story I am going to tell you about how three
little kittens came to live with us, just before
Christmas.
!!!

Toby has an established series of stories at the Fantasy Farm where he lives with the author. In many ways, he is the "shepherd" watching over the animals to keep them safe... What a wonderful friend, right?!!!

One of the things I especially liked about this story is that you can tell it's a true story, with real animal characters. For instance, take a look at the cat in the
tree of the front cover...he really is not happy to be stuck. Curiosity and cats, right? Me, I haven't had a full Christmas tree since I discovered one of my babies sitting looking up at my tree, ready to pounce! You know what I mean! Take one tree, add one cat...or more...and, well, that's what our story is all about!

The Christmas Kittens

Using color photographs to present her characters, the sense of realism for The Christmas Kittens is unique for children's books. I loved it since readers get to meet each one with their real names and learn all about their activities at Fantasy Farm...

 While these three kittens stand in for them, I should tell you that there were two tortoiseshell girls and one tabby boy...
"Oh, aren't they gorgeous!" Mum said.
Mum was an immediate "sucker" when her friend Peter brought three little kittens  and put them down on the patio where Mum and Dad were having coffee. Peter explained that the mother was feral and she had deserted them when they were weaned. Which was just as well since they were soon to have a new home!

Dad knew what was going to happen and laughingly started thinking about their names!  Their full names were Cleopatra, Nefertiti, and Ramesses but you'll learn their nicknames in the book.  Toby went over to touch noses and make them more welcome and soon they were settled in, wondering what came next... Of course, food was one of those things so Mum had to hurry out to the store--food being delivered straight to kittens/cats is the first step to becoming slaves for your new friends...LOL

Toby goes on to tell about the first night, because he was the one chosen--cats were sleeping on his tail or cuddling in tight to his body. Toby claimed he got a little grumpy, but I'm thinking this was not really the case--he was merely showing them who was really in charge!

I'm skipping about their trip to the V-E-T since my invited guests really don't like you-know-who to be talked about much... But, this is certainly part of the educational benefits of the book as the author slips in info about care and safety of animals...

The kittens were soon exploring their new home and Toby showed them around the Farm, soon nearing where Casper was resting... Casper had been on the farm for a long time and he really wasn't interested in those kittens! And he was quick to let them know that!

If the kittens scampered over and tried to say hello he would grumble "Now you three, leave me along, I'm getting old and I want some peace and quiet."
It didn't take long for them to realize he didn't want to play, and they learned to leave him alone, after all there was a whole new world to discover, and interesting new things to do...
                                                                            ~~~
Then one day the kittens disappeared! Everybody was worried because they lived in an area where hunting was allowed!
All I can tell you is that they were back at the Farm for Christmas and were soon helping trim the house, of course...
Just in time for gathering around the finished tree to sing more Christmas Carols!
If I haven't said it before, I loved this heartwarming story about the new kittens who came to Fantasy Farm! There are 42 pages, which includes dialogue, with Toby narrating--such fun. You also will have a chance in the back to see more of the stories about those that live at Fantasy Farm. Such a delightful surprise and small enough to stick right into your children's big Christmas stockings! Highly recommended!
Meow! Hello! I'm quite excited to be be here at Book Readers Heaven. You see, I'm not a star of a series, so I just never thought that I would ever be asked! I did play one of the starring roles in the story though, plus I heard that the blog owner's cats Honey and Calli put in a good word for me... Thanks to both of you and I'll try to do a good job in telling everybody about what happened...
As you might know, there was a murder! What you don't know was that he was my human Dad--and that I was right there as it happened. Unfortunately, my kits had already been born, so when everybody was crazily disappearing, I couldn't leave! Well, look at those faces...would you leave those two?!? Of course, they are much bigger now!
Ok, Ok, I'm sorry...but I love my kits! I love showing their pics! Yeah, there's a little difference between my picture at the top and the one here...This is my sister Sadie. I promised I'd add a picture of her today, but I just don't know why I did...doesn't she look mad? Of course, I told the photographer not to get too close to her, but he just wouldn't listen...anyway, I promise no more pictures! Ha!
Anyway...it all began when my Dad started stealing. You see, he's brilliant and is trying to create a new food for us cats...but his money was low and his research grant had not been continued, so he went and stole from that nice couple who keep the nearby shelter... Jillian--I think you met her through her babies--was helping at the Shelter. She was nervous because there were new babies, so she had asked her friend, Candace (the cop!) to be there with her... That was after he had already broken in and stole milk from another  neighbor...
They had learned that it was my Dad that had been doing this and why--his research cats were hungry, and that included me! But before I realized what was happening, he was dead! And there was such a "stink" in more ways than one, since they found a large amount of raw meat that had been out for awhile, if you know what that means!
Well, of course Jillian thought of the cats first, while the police was dealing with the murder. She called Shawn and he rounded up potential homes, brought cages, etc. Fortunately, Jillian chose to allow me and my kittens to come home with her temporarily. She even fixed us up with a beautiful room in her basement, gave us one of her quilts and everything... But, you know what was best of all? One of her kids came down and helped me take care of my babies!
"What are you doing in my house?" Dumb thing to say. But there are no adequate words for a situation that made fear and dread do flip-flops in my stomach.
"I focused on my cat and saw that the man was holding Merlot's scruff with a gloved hand. Merlot would have scratched his eyes out, would have been yowling, if not for that near-death grip.
"My heart pounded against my ribs. Someone was sitting in my living room dressed in a Halloween disguise. And he did not likely have my best interests in mind. But all I cared about at this moment was Merlot.
"Dried off now, Jillian?" the man said in a harsh whisper.
"Merlot squirmed, and he tightened his hold. He was now pulling so hard, my cat's eyes were drawn into near slits.
"That got my Irish up.
"Four quick strides and I reached the couch. The man started to rise, but I snatched Merlot before he could fully react, and then I gently tossed my cat in the direction of the hall. "Go, baby. Run..."
~~~
Which was just fine cause I needed help, especially since Jillian was out trying to find out who had killed my Dad...and then somebody broke into her home and had Merlot in his hands when she came home! Such excitement was a bit much for me and I admit I was scared! Not going to tell you what happened, but will let you know that her cop friend took up residence in the house for awhile too! Me and my kits were getting a lot of attention, care...and love!

Well, you can tell that this was all a dangerous time and very confusing to all the cats involved. You'll be happy to know that all of us were safe and found new wonderful homes...But if you want to know how it all ended, I've been told to let you know that this cozy mystery is BRH Highly Recommended!
