Maggie Tideswell's Latest, A Convenient Marriage, Out October 13! Get It!

Out October 13th

Without Love
Nothing manifests as it was intended
Without Love
Energies distort and warp the world
And it becomes a treacherous place

—Susan Kirk

MOONLIGHT SLANTED ACROSS THE floor, a gentle breeze lifting the gossamer curtain. Shadows moved across the wall. The sleeper moaned and turned, muttering, the bedding shifting to the floor. Down the hall, a few mumbled words as if in reply, and then silence again. The house sighed and creaked as it settled for the night. A dog barked at shadows down the street— a melancholy sound— joined by another bored canine farther away. An owl hooted in the tree outside the window, its heart-shaped face turning to survey the night before it swooped soundlessly into another dimension.
The sounds belonged to another world, because the sleepers didn’t hear. Somebody heard, though, crouched in the swirling mist, careful not to disturb the shadows on the wall. Breath rasped in the still of the night, power in the plume.
This is a place that is not a place,
at a time that is not a time.
Please, release me from the dark,
and let me rest in the light.
The clock in the hall ticked down the minutes to midnight. Something scratched at the glass in the window frames, the breeze sighing around the corners, piling dead leaves into a doorway. The mask hanging against the landing wall fell from its hook and clattered down the stairs.
Within moments, they were at the top of the stairs, three wispy white figures illuminated by the moonlight.
“Something is about to happen,” one of them said, a hand to her throat.
“A big change is coming,” another agreed, grasping for a hand to hold on to.
“We have to prepare,” the third one added, turning into the circle of protection.

A Convenient Marriage:
The Moragh Saga, Book 1

By Maggie Tideswell

I loved this book! It's a little bit paranormal, with witches, psychics and the ghost of the series, but mostly an endearing romance with a little bit of astrology thrown in for fun, although if you don't know much about astrology in its full form, you'll not be too affected by portents such as this:

Dark Moon in Virgo
Ending Relationships--Contact
With the Dead
Attention to Detail to Make Life Better

Even Holly didn't pay too much attention to any of this paranormal stuff...unless it was her sister talking, for Holly knew she was a true psychic...That's why she didn't interact much with her any more...

Soooo, how did she wind up living with three witch wannabees who very conscientiously enjoyed watching out for their room mate? She was always expecting them to break into a trio version of bubble, bubble, toil and trouble!
And Holly really did need help. Her ex-husband and new wife, had her children and they were refusing to let her see them or abide by the original divorce orders! And don't be surprised to learn that a bit of "witchy work" was used to break up the marriage in the first place... So that Holly was at her wit's end. She had tried everything she could think of to get the children returned to her, but there was always one excuse after another when it was time to return the kids...

And Holly was worried, even felt a little creepy looking at her friends. "The three of them looked as they always did, only now they had the same soft little smile around their lips. That never boded well." And then they threw out their idea... She must get married so that she could prove that she, too, had a suitable home in which their children could live... Holly's immediate response to them was that they were bonkers! LOL!

But you know do-gooders often think they know exactly what needs to be done...and they acted on behalf of Holly, by placing an ad!

In the meantime, in another place, a young woman engaged to be married was enjoying herself romping in the straw with one of the hired hands... Indeed she had been engaged for four years and kept procrastinating setting a date for her marriage, while enjoying herself any time and with whom she wanted...

What could make things worse?! Why, how about the spell on Holly's husband wearing off and he was beginning to be unhappy in his new marriage, regretting that he'd ever replaced Holly... Even if Holly didn't want him back!

But what's this, Holly's sister is worried about her so she uses her cards to "read" what was happening...

The first card was The Lovers. It was high time Holly found someone of her own to love. She would have to do a reading for him when she met him, to see if he was worthy of her Holly, but for the moment, Heather knew that a new man in her sister’s life was not what was bothering her. It was the second card that had quickly followed.

The Empress. A pregnancy? Was Holly pregnant? The card was reversed. Did that mean the pregnancy couldn’t come to its natural conclusion? Yes, but it wasn’t Holly who was pregnant. A frown pulled Heather’s brows together. A pregnancy… not Holly’s— but one that was going to affect Holly in some way. The cards would reveal the significance.

Heather stared at the third card. The High Priestess. told her exactly that, that the truth would be revealed, all secrets would come to light. Heather’s hand hovered over the card to feel its vibrations— it had fallen in the position of the distant past, which meant that something mysterious was at work in Holly’s life.

Heather turned the fourth, fifth, and sixth cards over in quick succession, placing them below, above and to the right of the spread. Studying the cards closely, her hair blew off her face and she sucked her breath in sharply. They were powerful cards...
~~~
And so a bargain had been made... Holly was going to meet the man she would marry for her marriage... of...convenience...
Only one problem... Holly fell head over heels in love... with a man who already was engaged...
No, this isn't a soap opera...it's exactly what a brilliant author has dreamed up to entertain, delight and take you away into a world where princes really do exist!
Oh, dear, if you don't like this as much as I did, well, you are missing out on lots of fun with a simply wondrous book of enchantment!
Maggie Tideswell is a South African author with a passion for romance. All over the world people are falling in love, even the birds and the bees are doing it. Ghosts just can't seem to leave her alone and she combines things that can't be explained, sweaty bodies and rumpled beds in a way that will make your toes curl and your hair stand on end.
Maggie just can't do without perfume, coffee and the internet. She is nearly as passionate about food as she is about creating alpha heroes every woman will fall in love with, just as she does, every time. The strangest thing is that cats have never played any kind of role in her stories, as she is owned by three of them. That might change soon.
Time Traveler to Civil War Era Creates Delightful and Humorous Romantic Suspense!
The Nation's Police Officers killed in the lin...Image by Livsafe via Flickr
Mike's Partner and Brother-in-Law, Killed in Line of Duty,
Some Like It
   Hotter
By Deb Stover
I loved the storyline for Some Like It Hotter! First the reader is in the midst of a police activity where one of the officers is killed...and then suddenly we are time traveling back over 100 years...
Why? All because of a "deal with the devil"...
Well, that is not exactly right. It was more a deal with a demon. And, consider this, the demon is not on great terms with the devil! After all, the demon had recently tried to tell the devil that he could do a better job of managing...you know where...LOL!  So, watch "Slick" and read him carefully and you just might be able to predict the end of the story! I did not... And it's a cool ending!
Some Like It HotterMike Faricy is a detective with the local police and was on a stakeout with Barney, his partner,  trying to learn more about the Druglord Milton and his men. Suddenly action starts and the two officers give chase and Barney is killed. Mike and Barney are not just partners. Barney is married to Mike's sister Carrie and a child is coming. When Mike realizes that Barney is dead, his immediate thought was for his sister and the baby. But then more of Milton's men came and Mike had to run for his life. Finally he came to a long-time vacated home that was said to be haunted and he entered, hoping that the men would not think of following him there.
As he waited, he heard something--music! It stopped and then began again, definitely piano music, but Mike knew there was nobody living in this old house. And that's when he met Slick... The negotiations began. Mike wanted Barney to be alive; Slick wanted Mike's soul... Bargain accepted. Time moved backwards...
There in the same building, Abigail Kingsley and her friend/maid Rosalie found Mike sprawled out on the floor in the great hall. The Civil War had ended, but for Abigail, the effects would go on for much longer. All of her family had been killed. The slaves had been freed; Rosalie had stayed because she had always been part of the family's life. They were near starvation and both Abigail and Rosalie were eating even less so that Wade would have enough to eat. Wade was Abigail's son.
Once Mike had put things together and realized that he had moved back in time, he realized that in other to fulfill his part of the bargain, he was going to have to kill the ancestor of the Druglord so that, in essence, Barney's death would never occur. Yes, quite an elaborate scheme; Slick admitted he was enjoying setting up the event! From time to time, he even would give hints as to how Mike could find Milton.
What was not part of Mike's plan was to be attracted to Abigail and ultimately to fall in love...
And Abigail surely wasn't looking for somebody to love; in fact she was terrified of men after what had been done to her years ago.
You're going to be reading about a great romance with some steamy scenes. What I most enjoyed, however, was seeing a character being thrown back into an earlier century and seeing him adjust to the loss of conveniences--learning how to milk a cow, fishing before every meal in order to have food, not having any money because what he had was not "real" and definitely no credit cards accepted!
As mentioned earlier I also enjoyed the interface between Mike and Slick. Mike was not willing to assume that he was going to die and, if he was, he visited his local church to prepare!
This was a page turner for me...it's a different type of suspense when you are following a man who is trying to fulfill his bargain with the devil...Sure makes you realize that you'd better not act quickly to do so! LOL A thoroughly enjoyable and unique book...Highly recommended!
Dakota Talks Sex in Paranormal Romances
10 12 09 Bearman Cartoon Marge Simpson PlayboyImage by Bearman2007 via Flickr
Why is it okay for the male in the story to sleep with multiple partners, but the heroine has to be virginal?
Hi, I'm Dakota Banks. Thanks, Tori, for letting me guest post on your blog today. This question is a little ambiguous, so I'm going to break it down into two parts.
1. The male has slept with multiple partners before this current story even begins.
2. The male is sleeping with multiple partners during this story.
First, let's take YA off the table. Theoretically paranormal YA shouldn't be measured by the same standard as adult books, although these days those standards are shifting. With so many adults reading YA books, and with the target audience more aware of and struggling with sexual identity questions at an earlier age, it's hard to tell where this subgenre is going.
Let's talk about before the current story begins. There are a good number of paranormals based on an immortal male and a normal female who, in the process of the story, discovers her abilities, destiny, etc. So if a guy is three hundred years old, can we honestly expect him to be a virgin before page one given that today's men have their first sexual experience on average at age 16.9 years? Get real. If he is still virginal, he has a very serious mental or physical problem, and how often does that situation show up in the hero of the story? Maybe in the villain, but we're not rooting for the heroine and the villain to get together. He could be a creature that has a very slow development to adolescence, and that would work.
The heroine, generally speaking, is between twenty and thirty years old. She could be a virgin if she had been raised in an unusual situation, such as in a convent, and is just now stepping out into the world. That would be explained in the book to give her a believable background. Given a typical background, though, how likely is it that she's still a virgin? The Kinsey Institute says that 92% of women have had sex by ages 22-24. If the heroine is in her twenties and still a virgin, there has to be an explanation in the story. A strongly religious upbringing, extreme shyness, aversion to sex due to something horrible in her background. and so on. On the other hand, the woman might be a creature who is vastly older than she appears, which puts her in the same category as long-lived men: unlikely to be a virgin.
Sacrifice (Mortal Path, Book 2)Sacrifice (Mortal Path, Book 2)Sacrifice (Mortal Path, Book 2)Sacrifice (Mortal Path, Book 2)During the story, should the guy get to play around while the relationship with the heroine is developing? In reality, men usually do. The Kinsey Institute says that only 20% of men have had one sex partner in their lives, whether they are married or not (compared to 33% who have had 11-21+ partners). Do we want our fiction to mirror reality? I say no, because we're talking about paranormal stories. That means the author isn't bound to the behavior of a majority of men in real life. The author can decide whether the male lead is a player or not, and how that figures into the plot and the romantic relationship.
Now I want to take a step back and look at romantic relationships in paranormal books in general. What are we, the readers, looking for? To identify with the male or female lead and be swept up in the romance by putting ourselves in the story in place of the character. That's when the element of fantasy comes in, not only in the paranormal part of the story but in the romance. If I'm a guy reading the book, I want to put myself in the story as an experienced player, charming with women, and attractive. It doesn't hurt if I'm super-strong or immortal. This plays right into men's fantasies. A man's interest in the book might wane if his representative on the page is a loser in his eyes--I'm not a man, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I don't think too many men fantasize about being a virgin. If I'm a woman reading the book, I go straight for the fantasy of new love or first love, allowing myself to relive it or experience it. Women's fantasies tend to be more emotional and romantic than men's and that's what I'm looking for in the book--to escape into a romantic fantasy, something that--let's face it--probably doesn't closely resemble our current love lives.
Were there any actual conclusions buried in all that, or was it just a brain dump? I think that the age of the character is a strong factor, but it depends on how realistic vs. fantastical the author wants to make the relationship. It's possible to create any combination of experienced/virginal desired and mess with their individual characteristics. For example, let's invent a male lead a thousand years old to whom something bad will happen when he first has sex--he loses his powers, changes into a frog (!), or even dies. Understandably, he's going to be selective about choosing a partner. That's part of the fun of paranormal for authors--and if readers can form a bond with your characters, I think they'll stay with you through the end of the book no matter which combination you choose. At least, I hope so! My series features Maliha Crayne who, after 250 years of decadent living, is beginning to open her heart to love. She's certainly no virgin, and she hasn't quite gotten the whole relationship thing down yet. She's like some unmarried women today in that she'll have sex on her own terms, when it's meaningful for her.
Have I gotten your blood boiling yet because you disagree with me? Or are you glad someone said what you were thinking? Let me know. I'd love to read your responses.
