From the Bittersweet Hollow Trilogy--Devil's Spring--by Aaron Paul Lazar

The woman who'd been checking Grace popped her head up. "You're six centimeters, Mrs. Rockwell. You're having a baby today."
Anderson recognized the woman as Dr. Rosenthal, Grace's obstetrician...
Grace's face twisted and she moaned. "Oh my God. I'm having another one."
Dr. Rosenthal nodded. "Good, they're coming regularly now. Let's get her up there." She backed out of the room and gave a little wave. "See you soon."
"Good?" Grace screamed. "This hurts!" She leaned forward and grasped her belly. "Anderson, make it stop!"
He glanced helplessly at the nurse, who smiled and shrugged. "Nothing you can do, sweetie. Just move back so we can get her up to the third floor. We'll probably get her some paid meds when it gets really bad."
Grace's face reddened. "When it gets really bad? Are you kidding me?"
The move to the Maternity ward proceeded swiftly. Someone shoved a packet of sterile clothing into Anderson's arms. "We'll tell you when to put these on."
He followed them to the elevator, where they whisked Grace's gurney efficiently to the third floor... He noticed he'd been dragging the suitcase behind him the whole way, and with a rush, he realized he had a job to do. He flipped it open and took out the photo Grace had chosen to be her focal point. Carefully, he set the picture on the shelf opposite her bed. It was a picture of her mother, Daisy, sitting in a bed of wildflowers as a young woman.
Daisy wanted to be with Grace when she gave birth, but her New York city doctor, a specialist in cancer research, had advised against it. She was in remission, but still frail. And the meds she was on lowered her ability to fight off viruses and bacteria. The photo was the closest thing Grace would have to her mother.
"I want my mother, Anderson," She started to cry.
"I know." He moved to her side and took her hand. "But your sister's on her way up honey. And we'll keep your mom informed the whole way,"
"I want to hear her voice. Call her, please.
Anderson glanced at his watch. Ten past six. Daisy would be up, because her husband, Dirk, always rose at five to tend to their horses and start his long day of barn work tending the fields. "Okay, hang on." He dialed Daisy's cell.
She picked up instantly. "Anderson? is my baby okay?"
"She is Daisy. She wants to talk to you."
He pressed the phone into his wife's hands and took a stop back.

Devil's Spring

By Aaron Paul Lazar

When financial problems hit an entire extended family, there is only one way to deal with the situation...family pulls together to help... When Anderson and Grace had their first child, they were both thrilled, but soon became concerned that they could not make it financially.

At the same time, both of the farms were having trouble due to weather conditions that had wiped their crops out. Grace's sister, Portia, had a suggestion, since their baby was now older, for Grace to go back to riding horses for show...and the result was that Anderson, Grace and the baby moved into the bunk house to have their own space... Grace started training with her father, hoping that their farm's name would again became known for good quality horses...

Portia also got a job at a local nursery... In order to allow that, one of the grandmothers agreed to babysit...but they were still afraid of losing their farms...
And then one day, it must have seemed a small miracle had happened...

A photographer in town noticed the two babies and exclaimed how beautiful they were... She noted that she thought she could use them for models to sell their photos to companies selling baby products...

Everybody was worried at first, but then decided to try it. And soon they were on their way to start...

The female photographer knew just exactly how to help the grandmother relax...and soon the children were happily playing with toys... The photographer asked the grandmother to leave so they wouldn't be distracted. Tess hesitated, and then went to the front room where she was offered a cup of tea... Tess was soon unconscious... If someone is out to make money through criminal actions, they have no concern for what they do to those they hurt... After some time, Tess awoke and everybody was gone; the only thing left was the baby carriage...

It certainly is a good thing that the Bittersweet Hollow Trilogy closes with this final book. This family has had enough grief for a lifetime! Find out what I mean by checking out my reviews of Devil's Lake and Devil's Creek! In this book, the older generation has two suffering from illness and dealing with medical expenses, adding to the stress and tension...

However, when the two babies, ages 2 and 1, are abducted, the tension went sky high and even with the FBI getting involved, the babies were still missing... Actually, I was surprised when the abductors were not found before the end of the book... They had already left the country...

After the babies were sold and delivered to a wealthy couple...

Oh, you think the story is close to the end? NOT!

Actually, the majority is just starting...

While the rest of the book is exciting and breathtaking...in a bad way...personally I didn't enjoy this last book as much as the first two. The only word I can use is that the two-step theme seemed contrived, artificial. As earlier mentioned, not capturing the original abductors seemed to me an oversight...

The characters in the second theme were quite interesting, but it was hard to accept that the new father would have bowed to the wishes of his wife, who had already suffered hallucinations about having children and losing them... In general these two rather small issues that seemed "off," does not result in a book that you should not consider, especially if you are already a fan. I have come to expect continuous excellence from this author, so I tend to pick up on even small issues when one of my top favorite authors does not totally satisfy...Sorry Aaron💖 Yes, I admit it, I've been spoiled by loving every single book of his up to this one...

Lazar has been dealing with family health issues and I applaud his continued writing through this stressful time... Please join me in good thoughts and prayers for him and his family members...

Great Solid Suspense Mystery, Hidden, by Thomas Hall Spotlights Child Abduction...

"The dream always started out innocently enough: Jonathan and his wife, Cindy, are sitting on a beach blanket by a lake, laughing and joking about something or other. Cindy then decides to go for a swim. Jonathan stays on the blanket, preferring to read.
"After several minutes and without warning, the sky turns the color of putty. It's as if God has taken a paintbrush and on a single stroke obliterated the blue overhead. Even more startling is the condition of the lake. There are rolling waves and whitecaps heading toward Cindy. Jonathan calls to her with fear in his voice, but she dismisses him.
 'If it starts thundering and lightning, I'll come in..."
"Other  than the fact that Cindy had died, nothing in the dream had actually occurred...

Hidden

By Thomas Hall

Jonathan's wife had been killed just months ago and Jonathan had fallen apart until he was able to realize that his son, Eric, had lost his mother and was also grieving. Eric was just now beginning to respond to his attempts to establish a better relationship between the two... It had been an average morning when Jonathan had dropped off Eric at school...

When they told him Eric was gone, Jonathan couldn't really be sure that he had waited there until Eric had actually opened the door and entered school. But that didn't matter, it didn't change the fact that he was gone--possibly kidnapped, possibly a runaway. Eric was six years old...

As two of the most important individuals in this drama, readers will not have much interaction with either. Jonathan must meekly stand by, perhaps praying, perhaps trying to remember any little thing that might help the police, the FBI...

Eric? He's Hidden...

"The silence was brief as Walker continued. "You
know, it's funny. Over the years I've gotten a lot of
satisfaction from what I do. But if someone asked
me whether I love my job, I'd say no. How can you
love doing something that half the time ends up
with some kid being scarred for life, or worse? So
why did I keep doing it?" A pause, "Well, at the
risk of sounding like a self-serving jerk, I'm good
at it. And just maybe a few more kids are alive
because of that. But as great as the successful ones
make you feel, somehow they don't make up for
other ones."
~~~
This is a solid mystery that will keep you in suspense, until--everything starts falling apart for the bad guys! And when that happens, a variety of criminal activities will fall out... from many, many places...
Eric, though, has been hidden...
The man who kidnapped him has been killed...
The man who fed him has been killed...
The criminal investigation team leaders for this kidnapping are, simply, two characters that would, if we were in this situation, be the best possible men to be working the case.
Dave Munoz is the local detective but has been joined by FBI agent Craig Walker. Walker surprises Munoz by being a very informal, let's-work-together type of agent. In fact by the end of the story, they are thinking about working together... I'm hoping that the author decides to do at least another sequel...and possibly a series! That's how good these guys are. They work the case, rarely take time off and use every means possible to, in this situation, find the child! Walker has plenty of experience in abduction cases, while Munoz adds the creative thinking and perseverance...
Action moves back and forth between the kidnapping case and the activities of the criminals involved. Tony Sarno is the front man for most of the events that occur. We find him initially being arrested in a hotel that is being used for prostitution--he is in the hallway, but had dropped his cell phone as the police do a raid...
Tony Sarno is into just about anything you can think of, but because the police found an email that had porn photos attached, they were able to take him in as well. The important part of this is that we meet three other characters--a volunteer public defender and an ADA who become involved with the kidnapping case... And a possible corrupt judge...
This is an exceptionally well-written suspense novel that moves directly into child abduction, pornography and trafficking, with the emphasis on solving the crimes... But also honing in on the potential criminal activities that are kept secret...by people you might pass in the mall or on the street... daily...
Highly recommended for mystery lovers! Enjoy!
Melissa Foster's Chasing Amanda Provides Riveting Suspense!
in the abandoned stone mines under Paris. Call...Image via Wikipedia
No! I want to go home!” She clawed at the dirt,
    kicking fiercely at her captor's face,
“I'm not going back in there!”
         Tracey felt her arm being pulled and twisted
     behind her back. Her terrified screams
          were absorbed by the dirt walls of the tunnel.
Chasing Amanda
By Melissa Foster
Melissa Foster hooked me from the first page and I stayed there reading until I finished it that evening! If you have the time, I'd recommend you plan to do the same...because Foster's second book is full of suspense, intrigue and a story that grabs you and holds on tight until you've read the final words! The subject matter is horrendous, of course, but I find that well-written novels with a tremendous impact, also serve to make more and more people aware of how easily, how very easily it is...to lose your child...
Molly, our lead character, had not only found that out, but had been traumatized by what she had seen. Amanda, a little girl had been abducted. Molly had seen her screaming and struggling with a man she thought was the father who had calmly told Molly she was upset about not getting her doll. Molly had driven away but later discovered that the girl had been abducted and later found murdered. Although years had passed, Molly had never forgotten, or forgiven herself. She had sunk so far into depression that her husband decided to relocate the family...
Chasing Amanda
But little girls alone are not safe, no matter where you go...
Now, in Boyds, a little girl was missing. Her name was Tracey... And Molly was adamant she was going to do everything possible to help find her, even if it meant losing her husband...
Besides, she was tortured by visions of little Tracey."She called the powerful episodes the Knowing, as her mother had. Now, she'd give anything to be able to close her eyes against her ability, wash it away like dirt from a fall.Before Amanda, Molly's visions had been vague and sporadic, sand under a breaking wave, morphing from one second to the next in unclear shapes and patterns. Amanda's death had changed every aspect of her life, including the clarity and frequency of her visions..."
While Boyds was a quiet small town where Molly had become involved and gotten to know most of the members of the community, she found that people were not happy that she was diligently working to find Tracey. Asking questions had led to the fact that another little girl had disappeared there 20 years ago and never been found. Secrets of small towns may disrupt an entire community and the person asking questions may be in danger...
No! Not now! She closed her eyes and tried to will away the pressure in her head. There was no escape. She clenched her fists and brought them to her forehead, bracing herself for what she knew was happening. A fog enveloped her mind, and her legs became weak beneath her. A passerby, seeing her body shake and thrust, would have thought Molly was having a seizure. A passerby wouldn't have been able to distinguish between a seizure and the Knowing. Molly could...She felt like a puppet on a string. Visions flashed in her mind: A cavern-like room surrounded by shadowy darkness; a young girl huddled in a corner, scared and shivering; the smell of rancid, wet earth. Molly fell to the ground and cried out in fear and frustration, “No!”
The police wouldn't support her; her husband didn't want her to become so involved. The one woman, her pastor, who had helped her through many discussions when she had first arrived, now seemed distant, secretive, and Molly had even seen her out in the night in strange places. But she wasn't the only one--another friend who had been out searching had stopped strangely in the middle of a cornfield and touched the ground, saw Molly and moved on. When Molly reached the spot, she bent down and "felt" that something was there...
But time was passing and Tracey had still not been found. Molly was finding clues, but kept them to herself, hoping that they would bring psychic connections...but when they did, nobody would go with her to the place where she knew Tracey was being held... Now she faced Tracey's abductor, and found that Tracey had been so traumatized that she no longer wanted to leave the one who had kidnapped her...
You DO NOT want to miss this one! I considered this a must-read...for many reasons! Readers--you know who you are! Melissa Foster is a true storyteller, able to create strong believable characters, provide riveting suspense, and, at the same time, spotlight the major issue of child abduction. Melissa, very well done!
