Lazar's Latest Gus LeGarde Mystery Keeps This Series Moving Up! Picked for a 2014 Personal Favorite!

His eyes opened and he stared at the sky. I pressed the cloth against the cut again. The bleeding had almost stopped. “Sir? Are you okay? Can you hear me?”
His dark eyes flitted toward the plane. When he spoke, his voice resonated in a clipped British accent. “Of course I can bloody well hear you, Gus. You needn’t shout.”
Startled, I studied him closer. The man was blessed with a Michelangelo face reminiscent of the statue of David, but with more rounded features, including a strong nose and full lips. His black skin shone with vigorous health. A small silver earring pierced his right ear. On his left hand he wore an onyx and silver band. The ring sparked some distant memory, but I still couldn’t summon his identity. He turned his eyes to mine, forced a weak smile, and took my hand. In that instant, recognition flooded through me. Byron. Byron Cunningham. “Byron.” I smiled. “You’ve changed a bit over the years. I didn’t recognize you without your granny glasses and bellbottoms.” He squeezed my hand and pushed himself onto his elbows. “I have changed a mite, I guess...
I called to tell you I accepted  a post at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester... I'm chair of the voice department. Just began last month..."
"Eastman, huh? What a Plum job."
"Quite. Many consider Eastman to be the best music school in the world, you know." Pride flitted across his face.
I couldn't resist. I gave him a bear hug. ...you've damned lucky you didn't die in the crash."
"Lucky? I'd say it was some sort of divine providence. If you hadn't been riding in this area...if you hadn't dragged me out...I'd be charcoal, singing with the angels."

The Liar's Gallery:
A Gus LeGarde Mystery
By Aaron Paul Lazar

If I were a man, I'd want to be like Gus LeGarde... What? You've never thought about being somebody of the opposite sex... Or maybe somebody of the same sex who you admire? Gus is a man that garners respect, love, and demonstrates those qualities and more in return. Somehow I always think that he must be much like the author, don't you think? When a character is drawn so beautifully, I tend to think that the character represents either the author or somebody who was greatly admired by the author... One of the first suggestions through my search was Kelsey Grammer. You know, I think Google knows how to work for me! LOL

A good portion of each book will be set at the LeGarde family farm where LeGarde will be either gardening or fixing a meal...or picking up one of the little ones carefully and loving...
Gus' daughter lives with them now with her three children and Gus has recently remarried Camille, after losing his first wife a number of years ago through cancer. Gus also gained an adopted daughter, Shelby, with his second marriage and she is not exactly happy with her father when she falls in love with an "older man." She's still in high school and he's in college...
A new character introduced to readers is actually Gus' best friend, but they've not seen each other for years--a little fault on both while the busy world is really the culprit! Gus had played for Byron when he was either in concert or preparing for class work. Now Byron was just appointed as head of the music department at Eastman in Rochester... The new boyfriend just happens to be attending Eastman!
Byron had been flying his own plane when it went down. Fortunately, it was near where Gus had been out riding. He had just gotten Byron out when the gas blew and the plane was destroyed. Once they were back at the farm and had a night's rest, they went to the site of the plane and found a long tube that had a painting inside! Byron knew nothing about it but later at home an accidental spill caused them to realize that the original painting had been painted over!
Another image emerged beneath the garish New York City painting. The newly revealed section was beautifully textured with short violet brush strokes. I exchanged a wide-eyed glance with Byron and dabbed more juice onto the paper towel. The over-painting dissolved quickly. “Waterloo Bridge,” I whispered. I knew the painting well, having visited it frequently on the second floor of the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery. It was my favorite canvas from the museum’s Impressionist collection. Painted in 1903 by Claude Monet, it was entitled “The Waterloo Bridge, Veiled Sun.”
Byron’s jaw dropped. “I think it’s time to call someone, Gus.”
Johnny had stopped crying and was sniffling now. “That picture’s prettier, Opa.” He wiped his cheeks and turned to Byron. “Is that your cup-a-coffee, Mr. Cubbingham?”
He smiled at Johnny. “You bet it is, lad. Cup of tea, cup of coffee. Any way you say it, this one I like.”
~~~
While discussions began with the police art experts, another famous piece was discovered when Byron was given the tour of the house...
[Note from BRH: The painting in the book is supposed to be undiscovered...this selection is an example of his work]
He took out his glasses, cleaned them with a shirttail, and put them on, scrutinizing the signature at the bottom. Hishands were shaking. “Gus,” he said in a hoarse whisper. “This is a Knight. A Daniel Ridgway Knight.” “It sure is,” I said calmly. “Are you familiar with his work?”
 “Don’t be daft! I adore him. I have several of his French countryside paintings in my apartment. I paid a fortune for them, and have them securely guarded. I’m on the website daily, looking for new offerings. But this—” he said, stepping back to admire the piece. “I’ve never seen anything like this. My God, Gus, do you know how much this is worth?”
I looked up at the old man playing fiddle beneath an ancient tree whose branches spread like a protective canopy. His bushy white beard and rustic clothing reminded me of a French country peasant. A red knapsack lay at his feet, and a little white dog danced on his hind feet to the fiddler’s music. In the background, a distant village sprawled across the horizon. “Never really thought about it. I imagine it could be in the thousands?”
 Byron rolled his eyes. “Good God, man. You have a lot to learn. A piece of this quality could easily be worth half a million. Maybe more.” He ran his fingers nervously through his hair. “You need to get it appraised and insured...
Without going any further into the artistic world, let's just say that Gus and Byron got involved with the seamy side when they discover there is a ring of thieves working in Rochester and millions of dollars of art had already been taken and... now comes into the LeGarde's home and lives... While Byron is under suspicion since the Monet had been found in his plane...
So let's get back to Shelby. Here, too, Byron's visit brought her into the primary story. When Shelby learned that Byron was a singing teacher, she took his being there to tell Gus that she wanted to sing. Byron spent time with her, and as the family listened, they were all surprised at Shelby's beautiful voice. Needless to say that Byron immediately suggested lessons, Gus agreed, and Gus was soon driving Shelby to Rochester, but not until after the family had enjoyed many solos and duets including this piece from the Mikado... [I found this interpretation fun, don't you?And the first time she was there, she met the "University man" of her dreams... Without going into their story too much, let's say that it just may be the typical teenage romance? Maybe not!
[I loved the video background on this, plus it was shorter version!]
Maddy stood up, rummaged in her oversized bag, and drew out a CD. “I just bought this, Gus. I wanted you to take a listen. It’s André Rieu. You know how they’ve been featuring his orchestra on the public station lately? I just adored it, and couldn’t resist ordering the CD and the video.”
 I glanced at the collection of Strauss waltzes performed by the violinist/conductor and his orchestra, sliding it into the CD player. The three-four beat music swelled across the room. Camille’s eyes sparkled. She swayed to the music. When her feet started tapping, Byron turned to her. “Camille? Do you waltz?”
“I do, but my husband is a bit reticent to try anything more than a two-step shuffle.” She looked at me apologetically.
 I shrugged. “I can’t deny it.” Byron stood and offered his arm to her. “In that case, would you do me the honor?”
~~~

Ok, I admit it...I played up the parts that were "extras" or "fill-ins" around the major thrusts of the book. I did it and I'm glad I did it...My review is for readers, who have never read Lazar before, one of the reasons many place his books as must-reads! I know Gus better than I know any of my neighbors and I adore his love of family, music, and all things meaningful. LeGarde has to be my favorite series, but I also enjoy reading all the rest. Gus also has a very special brother-in-law who does not have too big a part in this book...but a very important part...he knows that Shelby is in trouble and starts the hunt for her!

One other mention that deserves a spotlight is the relationship between Gus and Byron... After being close friends for a major part of their lives, it was only when Gus saves Byron's life in this book, that Byron emotionally came "out" to Gus. It is a truly touching scene as one close friend tells his best friend that he never quite trusted him...enough... Needless to say, Gus was both angry and hurt... What a world we created in the past,  and which still needs work... This became very important in the story because Byron's lover had just died and... Well, you're going to have to find that out for yourself! Read this book!

I loved it! You will too!

Aaron Paul Lazar wasn't always a mystery writer. It wasn't until eight members of his family and friends died within five years that the urge to write became overwhelming. "When my father died, I lost it. I needed an outlet, and writing provided the kind of solace I couldn't find elsewhere."

Lazar created the Gus LeGarde mystery series, with the founding novel, DOUBLE FORTÉ (2004), a chilling winter mystery set in the Genesee Valley of upstate New York. Like Lazar's father, protagonist Gus LeGarde is a classical music professor. Gus, a grandfather, gardener, chef, and nature lover, plays Chopin etudes to feed his soul and thinks of himself as a "Renaissance man caught in the 21st century." This book has since be rereleased in 2012 as an "author's preferred edition," via Twilight Times Books.

The creation of the series lent Lazar the comfort he sought, yet in the process, a new passion was unleashed. Obsessed with his parallel universe, he now lives, breathes, and dreams about his characters, and has written ten LeGarde mysteries in eight years. (UPSTAGED - 2005; TREMOLO: CRY OF THE LOON - 2007 Twilight Times Books; MAZURKA - 2009 Twilight Times Books, FIRESONG - 2011, DON'T LET THE WIND CATCH YOU - 2013, VIRTUOSO - 2014, with more to come.) The author has just completed his twenty-first novel.

One day while rototilling his gardens, Lazar unearthed a green cat's eye marble, which prompted the new paranormal mystery series featuring Sam Moore, retired country doctor and passionate gardener. The green marble, a powerful talisman, connects all three of the books in the series, whisking Sam back in time to uncover his brother's dreadful fate fifty years earlier. (HEALEY'S CAVE, 2010; TERROR COMES KNOCKING, 2011; FOR KEEPS, 2012) Lazar intends to continue both series.

Lazar's books feature breathless chase scenes, nasty villains, and taut suspense, but are also intensely human stories, replete with kids, dogs, horses, food, romance, and humor. The author calls them, "country mysteries," although reviewers have dubbed them "literary mysteries."

"It seems as though every image ever impressed upon my brain finds its way into my work. Whether it's the light dancing through stained-glass windows in a Parisian chapel, curly slate-green lichen covering a boulder at the edge of a pond in Maine, or hoarfrost dangling from a cherry tree branch in mid-winter, these images burrow into my memory cells. In time they bubble back, persistently itching, until they are poured out on the page."

In 2009, Kodak gave him up for grabs, and during the year off before he landed in his coveted new job with KB America, he had time to explore and reconnect with his environment. Little did he know that several trips to the Adirondack Mountains would reawaken his passion for that part of the country. Two new books were written in that time frame, starting yet another mystery series, Tall Pines Mysteries. The first two combooks in the series, FOR THE BIRDS - 2011 and ESSENTIALLY YOURS - 2012 have been winning literary awards. Keep an eye out for SANCTUARY (2014), and MURDER ON THE SACANDAGA (2015), coming via Twilight Times Books.

In between all the novels, Lazar found time to issue three writing guides based on his many years of writing advice blogs, entitled WRITE LIKE THE WIND, volumes 1-3. These are available in eBook and audio book.

In his twenty-first book, Lazar has jumped genre. THE SEACREST - OCT 2013 -, a love story, is poised to capture hearts across the globe.
The author lives on a ridge overlooking the Genesee Valley in upstate New York with his wife, mother-in-law, two dogs, and cat. He finds grandfathering one of the most precious and important times of life, and spends as much time as possible with Julian, Gordon, and Isabella.

Lazar maintains several websites and blogs, was the Gather Saturday Writing Essential host for three years, writes his monthly "Seedlings" columns for the Voice in the Dark literary journal and the Future Mystery Anthology Magazine. He has been published in Absolute Write as well as The Great Mystery and Suspense Magazine. See excerpts and reviews here:

YA Readers Have The Gus LeGarde Series Too! Check Out Don't Let The Wind Catch You! Latest from Aaron Paul Lazar...

Stolen from the Author's Web Site!
"I dropped the reins on the grass and my trusty black gelding began to graze as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. I rolled onto my back, breathing hard. “Holy mackerel! I’ve never been so scared in my life.”
"Elsbeth slid from Golden Boy’s back and tied him to a fencepost. Sig did the same with Frisbee, and they joined me on the grassy hill.
“Mein Gott! How did he know we were out there?”
"Elsbeth propped herself up with one elbow and turned to me. “And who was he talking to?”
"Siegfried was quiet for a moment, but I could see his brain working furiously behind half-closed eyes. “Maybe he has a prisoner in there. And his mouth was gagged. That’s why we couldn’t hear their answers.”
"I sat up. “But he heard the answers, right? He was really talking to someone.”
"Sig’s mouth twisted. “Ja. I guess so.”
"When Elsbeth turned on her stomach, her dark brown curls fell forward, nearly obscuring her face, her cheeks still flushed pink from our gallop to safety. “I think it was a psychic child, his only daughter who can read minds and make spoons bend. She sensed we were outside and told him. Maybe she told him in his head. She didn’t even need to talk.” Her eyes flashed with excitement, even though Siegfried seemed to dismiss the theory with a half head shake.
“It could be.” I rolled onto my stomach beside her, finally feeling my breath come under control. “Or maybe he was talking to a ghost. What the heck was that weird singing sound, anyway?”
"Siegfried snorted and ignored my question. “Let’s face it. It’s more likely he was delusional. He imagines a friend is with him. He is so lonely he had to make one up. And he has conversations with them on a regular basis.”
“That would make him nuts,” I said. Siegfried looked at me as if I were a slow student. “Ja, precisely.”

Don't Let the Wind Catch You:
A Gus LeGarde Mystery
By Aaron Paul Lazar

For those who already love the Gus LeGarde series by Lazar, you'll be happy to hear that the same characters at younger ages are back in this latest novel and will continue in the future! And, of course, the mystery is just as exciting for young readers as it is for we adults who enjoy the wonderful characters!
Conesus Lake, NY

It doesn't take more than one book by this author to consider future books! His characters become friends that you'd like to invite into your home, get to know, and invite back often... Maybe that's because he's already invited you into the characters' homes, fed you with home-grown garden items and told you about the surrounding areas as he tells his stories...
The mystery is always fun but it's the characters' involvement in the solution that really pulls me in, especially these young ones! LOL Young adults will enjoy spending their summer riding horses, roaming the countryside, and, of course, getting in trouble with Gus, Elsbeth and Siegfried! As well as more than enough danger!

"Siegfried and I finally stopped our mad flight when we arrived at a field of sunflowers. The heavy-headed stalks stretched hundreds of acres over a gently rolling hill that sloped toward the Conesus Lake basin. The view of the westernmost Finger Lake was phenomenal, showcased by two hilly ridges that cradled the shimmering basin of water. I slid off Pancho’s back and tied him to a black locust tree. He jerked his head back a little, loosening the reins enough to let him yank the tall grass at the bottom of the tree with his square white teeth.
Siegfried jumped off Frisbee’s back and tethered him on a nearby honeysuckle bush. I found a log to sit on and made room for Sig beside me. With my head in my hands, I swayed and moaned. “What the heck was that?”
"Siegfried looked paler than I’d ever seen him. A scared boy sat in the place of my quiet, knowing friend. He rubbed his eyes with his hand, then ran it along his slack jaw. Without saying a word, he shook his head over and over again. Finally, he brushed back his enviably long blond hair and looked me straight in the eyes. “It’s just not possible.”
"I slid down to the soft dirt beside the log and leaned back, closing my eyes. “I know. If you hadn’t been there, I would’ve thought I was dreaming.” We sat quietly for a while, trying to absorb the weirdness of it all. I pulled absentmindedly on a grape vine that ran along the log, and rolled one of the leaves into a little ball. I tossed it up and down, catching it with one hand and throwing it with the other. My eyes stayed unfocused, however, and the scene kept playing itself over and over in my brain. Visions of the Huck Finn pages flipping by themselves sent shudders of nerves down to my toes. The weird singing ended up stuck in my brain. It reminded me in a strange way of the minor tunes in Chopin’s mazurkas. “It was the same weird singing we heard the first time.”

“Is there anything I can do to help, Elsbeth?
I’m so sorry.” Something more than affection
 pulsed through me, and it may have happened
 to her, too, for she nuzzled closer to me.
“Hold me, Gus.”
She reached her arms up to my shoulders and
 kissed my cheek. I kissed her back, close to
— but not on— her soft lips. Tears still
 streamed from her eyes, and when she laid
 her head against my neck I felt the warm
 moisture wet my skin. We held each other
 until Siegfried called to her from the doorway.
 “Coming!” She looked at me with a rush of
 affection and whispered, “You’d better go.
Try calling tomorrow morning. See if my father
 will let us talk to you.” I fell back against
 the rough wooden planks that separated
 both stalls and nodded. “Okay.”
It was all I could manage. “Thank you.”
She lifted her hand to her lips and blew me a
 teary kiss. I was too dumbfounded to catch it,
 but smiled back with a goofy grin.
 “Tomorrow.”
Mixed feelings surged within
 me.
 I felt awful that she’d been hit again,
 and that her father found the books.
I wanted to protect her. I cared so deeply
 for her. Now I felt all floppy and
happy inside..."

Take a good look at this beautiful cover and you'll soon realize that there is a bit of the paranormal. Ahhh, you know, a ghost! Indeed, she's a beautiful Indian maiden who is earthbound and has been for many, many years!

Gus, Elsbeth and Siegfried were out looking for a place that they could claim as their own and had snuck up on an old shack. They saw smoke coming from the chimney but were so close that they kept on going, trying to see who lived there...

Before long, an old man was yelling at them, and next had a rifle in his hands, telling them to get away! Naturally, they all turned and ran! But that wasn't to be the end of that! They soon knew the man whose name was Zach Tully and became friends with him. And Gus was chosen by the ghost to be seen by him. She was called Penni now, but her real name was Penaki. Somehow she had found her way to the hermit's home and had been welcomed and stayed! Cool, right?! Even a hermit likes a little company!

But soon Gus discovered there was another mystery. His mother refused to acknowledge Tully or wanted Gus to have anything to do with him! Later, Gus discovered that it had something to do with his grandfather. Without going further on this mystery, I do want to commend Lazar for tackling an important issue in such a sensitive fashion for the time period in which the story is told...

The three friends were at first scared to be seeing and talking to a ghost, but Penni was so friendly and knew that they were not going to hurt her or Tully, so they started to hunt for clues about the time that Penni must have died. They all believed it was around 1799 when the war had been fought right in that area!

“Look. Here are the names of the guys who died.” I had more excitement in my voice than I should have, and tried to tone it down when I read the list. “Sacred to the memory of… .” I squinted and tried to pronounce the name as best I could. “Hanyerry, a loyal Oneida chief. Sergeant Nicholas Hungerman, Privates Benjamin Curtin, William Faughey, James McElroy, William Harvey, John Putnam, John Conrey, John Miller, and seven others, names unknown who fell and were burned here.”
Elsbeth’s hand flew to her mouth. “Burned?” I leaned forward and peered harder. “Oh, sorry. Not burned. Buried.”
"Siegfried read from the adjacent side [of the Ambuscade] “November, 1901, erected by the Livingston County Historical Society. Scene of the massacre after a desperate and heroic struggle of Lieutenant Thomas Boyd’s scouting party of General Sullivan’s army by an ambuscade of British and Indians under Butler and Grant. September 13th, 1779.”
“My turn.” Elsbeth took a deep breath and traced her finger in the carved granite while she read. “Sacred to the memory of Lieutenant Thomas Boyd and Sergeant Michael Parker who were captured and afterward tortured and killed.” She turned to us with a somber expression. “There’s a poem underneath.”
 “Read it,” I said.
" Afar their bones may lie, but here their patriot blood baptized the land for aye and widened freedom’s flood.’“ She turned to us with confusion in her eyes. “What’s that mean?”
“They tortured and buried Boyd and Parker in Cuylerville. Remember the plaque that marks where the ‘torture tree’ used to be?” Siegfried nodded. “It’s a park now, right?” “Right. And I think they buried their bodies there, but they were first attacked and captured here..."
~~~
So we've got a ghost, a historical mystery to solve, a family mystery to solve, new friends, and, I'm saving the best for last, a budding romance between Gus and Elsbeth, with Siegfried quietly looking on, pleased that his loved ones are beginning to get along quite well! LOL There are lots of other wonderful characters including neighbors of Gus. And we see a change in attitude for Elsbeth and Siegfried's father which was totally what we wanted to see after what we had read earlier in the book! This is a perfect gift for that YA that's just discovering a love of mysteries. Check out Tremolo, which is the first book with the young threesome...
And, adults, please don't be embarrassed to read YA books...especially this one that's highly recommended... Yeah, I loved it... Make Lazar one of your preferred authors--you'll be glad you did.
FireSong:
A Gus LeGarde Mystery
By Aaron Paul Lazar
Once again Gus LeGarde welcomes us into his home. And while he's shucking corn and shelling peas, preparing enough dinner that we just know we'll be invited, we sit back and begin to feel comfortable with this man who has surrounded himself with family, including his new wife, Camille. As I was thinking about writing my review, I had an interesting vision--of what had taken place in that home since the last novel!
Sure, life went on as usual for his daughter and grandchildren and for Siegfried who lives on the property in a separate building, but for Camille, she was moving into an established house, needing to find a way to make that house her home. I think she was successful because by the time we are visiting in Firesong, the latest book in this series, she has begun to explore the history of the house and the details of the architecture. In fact,  she has discovered her own mystery--was her new home once a shelter for slaves escaping through the Underground Railroad?!!
FireSongSo while she is exploring, tapping walls, she finds that Mary Hill, once the owner of their house was a "conductor" of that Railroad. Readers will be enchanted as further history of their home is provided, leading to  the discovery of a secret room in their house...and much more!
But it was at church that the latest town mischief occurred--and it was caused by a major storm and tornado that caused considerable damage to the church. In fact, the storm began just at the beginning of a service and everybody was forced to relocate to the ground floor. Reverend Nahum Hardina was quick to help members of his congregation, and I wanted to introduce him early because he became a major character in FireSong when someone tried to kill him...and he was accused!
It all started when a body was discovered after the storm...
Hunting clothes remaining on the skeleton, together with a rifle and license quickly led to the identification of the body as Colin Springer. His disappearance had been quite a mystery and there had been stories of missing money and a possible trip with another woman as the reasons he had never been found. Now it looked like he had died from a hunting accident victim.
But he had been murdered! And, of course, Gus manages to be involved with most of the investigation!
It is always in the midst of Ordinary that something seems to happen in the LeGarde family home. Seigfried had suggested to Johnny that they go camping, so with his mother's consent and lots of food, Seigfried and Johnny head for the hills...
Gus woke in the middle of that night from storm lightning. Immediately he thought of the two campers and jumped up to go to them. Arriving just in time, he got Johnny and Seigfried awake but just then lightning struck a tree, flames sprung from everywhere in the dry woods caused by a drought. Soon all three were surrounded by fire!
And then they heard the song. “What’s dat song, Opa?” Johnny asked again. (p. 194)
Just like I said, Gus invites you into his home for dinner and before long, there's a dead body, an accused Reverend who by the way is drugged and in a coma, terror during a forest fire, and so much more--all leading to solving the crimes from this century as well as the past! Ok, I'll give you a hint, Mary Hill's skeleton was also discovered, along with the body of a slave...
I love Aaron Lazar's books! His style is homespun background that continues to flow daily while readers are tossed into tragedy, terror and some of the best mysteries you will find! If you haven't read Lazar, I highly recommend that you start at the beginning of a series. Sure, you can read FireSong immediately and thoroughly become involved and enjoy it. But I promise you're going to want to read the whole series...so don't say I didn't warn you! Highly recommended!
Review: Final Book in Lazar Marathon Surprises and Delights!
loons in the mistImage by Steve took it via Flickr
Tremolo: Cry of the Loon
By Aaron Paul Lazar
I have sooooo enjoyed the opportunity to read all of the books this month that have so far been written by Aaron Paul Lazar. That included all of the Gus LeGarde series, and the first in his new series, Healey's Cave!
Tremolo: cry of the loonBut Tremolo: Cry of the Loon took me on an entirely different trip--back to my childhood! Because, you see, Tremolo is a Gus LeGarde novel that takes us back to when Gus was just 11 and is involved with his first mystery. Yes, Siegfried and Elsbeth, the 10-year-old twins are both there and we get to know Siegfried as the little genius he was. I especially enjoyed that Elsbeth, as well as Siegfried, became "blood brothers" with Gus--while Gus was eyeing an older woman of 15!
Gus' grandfather owns a summer resort/fishing camp and the family, friends and other patrons are enjoying the time in this quiet area.
At that time, children spent most of their days on their own exploring and were even allowed to swim and take boats out on the lake. In fact that's where we meet Gus and his friends. But a mist and then a deep fog fell while they were out and through a series of events, Gus' grandfather's boat capsized! At first they had trouble getting on shore and then weren't sure where they were.
Finally realizing they were on the other side of the campsite, they started through the woods and that's when Gus saw her--a young girl was coming toward them, she was bleeding around her mouth, her eyes frightened and, after almost colliding with Gus, she ran quickly in another direction.
Soon they heard a man calling, "Sharon," and running after the girl. Siegfried had quickly pulled Gus and Elsbeth into the woods until he had passed, but they could smell the whiskey and saw and heard his anger. They assumed the man was her father and hoped she would not be hurt any more once he caught her!
But Sharon never came back...
And Gus couldn't forget the terror he knew Sharon had been facing...
The summer was not to be as quiet as previous years, as thefts began to happen and a mysterious woman showed up who had men guarding her from anybody's contact. On the other hand, there was time for roasting marshmallows, sleepovers, swimming and boating, after taking on additional chores since one boat had been lost already...
So what did you do during summer vacations when you were young. No matter what, I guarantee that, like me, Aaron Paul Lazar will pull you backward as he explores the summer through the eyes of three young friends as they talk about the mysteries surrounding them and another little girl. The ending was not quite a surprise but surely was excitingly tense as the Blood Brothers solved all the mysteries, almost as accidents!
Don't expect the Hardy Boys...these children are unique and special in their own right...in fact I'd like to see a "Young Gus" spinoff for the LeGarde series! It's bound to be a hit with the younger audience, just like Tremolo is easily recommended for older children and teens, as well as adults! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting these kids and you will too!
Review: Mazurka "Must" be Spotlighted in Gus LeGarde Mystery Marathon!
Mazurka (A Gus LeGarde Mystery)
Mazurka:
A Gus LeGarde Mystery
By Aaron Paul Lazar
Lazar is the first—the very first author who forced me to go to the back of the book to find out about a character. I didn’t read anything; I just made sure the name appeared again—I didn’t want to grieve if I didn’t have to! Ok, I’m giving away a little by saying that, so I’ll stop and just add that Aaron Paul Lazar’s characters in this series are so wonderfully created that I’ve become attached to them!
And no wonder! Would you believe that he changed a Honeymoon Trip into a Fantastic Mystery (for readers, that is)? I didn’t know whether to be irritated or excited!
You probably realize that Mazurka has now become my favorite in the Gus LeGarde series. They do indeed keep getting better, but I absolutely loved this one!
Gus and Camille are now married—you’ll see a wonderful rerun of the wedding near the end of the book—what a clever idea for sharing this important moment in such a unique. touching way! Gus and Camille had decided to first stop in Paris and then on to Vienna for their honeymoon. But since that early decision there had been a slight change.
Siegfried’s great aunt had requested Sig come to Germany—her health was bad and she had asked for a visit. If you’re following the series, you will know that Sig is the twin brother of Gus’ first wife who was now dead. Sig had also been Gus’ best friend so when he became his brother-in-law, he had moved to live on their property. As you may also know by now, Sig was hurt in an accident when he was twelve. Although he still has moments of brilliance, especially related to math, and has learned to drive a car and other things, his mental capabilities had been limited at that time. Interestingly, he had reverted to speaking the German he had known as a child and was quite comfortable in planning a visit with his relatives.
Sig wasn’t quite sure that he was not interfering with the honeymoon, but Gus and Camille both loved Sig and assured him he was welcome. Except...none of them could have realized what was awaiting them!
From all over the world, with one even on the plane with Gus’s small group, young men who were referred to as neo-Nazis were planning major terroristic maneuvers. So while Gus, Camille and Sig went to their hotel in Paris and began to tour, a major leader of the Nazi group also arrived. It was during their first shopping trip that the leader spotted Sig. With long blond hair pulled into a ponytail, Sig’s tall body stood out in any crowd, so as he waited outside for Gus and Camille to come out of a shop, the Nazi leader, thinking he was talking to a local German man, yelled out to Sig.
That was the worst thing he could have done. For Sig didn’t quite understand what was happening, but he did know that the Nazis had killed many of his family,  Sig was part Jewish and he screamed that back to the man. Instantly a fight began and during that fight Sig was seriously injured and one of the young men accidentally killed the leader, while aiming for Sig.
But to the young rebels, they didn’t care who had pulled the trigger. Sig, and Gus and Camille who had by then joined Sig were at fault. Revenge was what came after that!
The excitement, danger, and anger against the group who were imitating the old Nazi regime affects everybody in various countries, but only a few know of the chase after Sig, Gus and Camille. Sig has made it into Germany where he will recuperate, while Gus and Camille decide that it is all right to proceed to Vienna, although that, too, proves to be wrong. While there, they hear that a bomb has destroyed the home where Sig was staying!
Against the fear and hatred that is stirred by this terrorist group, Lazar as placed a beautiful family intrigue. During the time that Gus and Camille are still in Germany, his great aunt shares a precious secret that has been handed down from generation to generation and now would go to Sig. At the same time, she is joyous to learn that her niece had a daughter about whom she have never heard—an important fact since the secret was to be handed down through the female side of the family. Sig was the one who quickly mentioned that it should go to Freddie who had received the formal name that was part of the story—Fredericka. This story in itself is worthy of its own short story and I commend Lazar for making it so realistic and beautifully presented within the overall novel! Indeed the title reflects this family heritage and fits so well within the overall theme of the Gus LeGarde Mystery series.
Aaron, you are getting better and better and I can’t wait to read the next in this series, as well as all of your future books! Aaron Paul Lazar has officially been added to my must-read favorite author list! I loved Mazurka...but I truly do recommend you begin at the beginning of this series. As mentioned above, the characters are so important that you just must meet them long before Mazurka “happens!”
Review: Second Book in Gus LeGarde Series Became My Favorite...
Two hippies at the Woodstock FestivalImage via Wikipedia
Upstaged:
A Gus LeGarde Mystery
By Aaron Paul Lazar
If you enjoy stories like Sister Act II or others where students are brought together to perform in a major production, then you will enjoy Upstaged just as much as I did! In fact, having extensive information and character involvement with music just might place the Gus LeGarde Series versus Sam Moore a little ahead for me. But no matter what, Aaron Paul Lazar is a wonderful storyteller and has the ability to create characters for whom you care about. Adding mystery and suspense is just like icing on the cake!
In addition to being a social worker, Camille, Gus' fiancee directs the musical productions for the local high school. And since she has the inside track with Gus, it was quite natural that he help by playing the piano for rehearsals. In fact, it was a musical that Gus had written ages ago, Spirit Me Away, that was going to be performed.  Everybody was excited to wear the hippi clothes from the '60s and pretend they were heading for Woodstock!
Upstaged: A Gus LeGarde MysteryBut even at the very first rehearsal/tryouts, nasty things started to happen. The first was a snake being tossed from above into the costume room. Mrs. Bigelow, a mother and volunteer helping with the performance was the one screaming as the first incident occurred to disrupt and cause problems. As he is often the hero, Siegfried, who was also a volunteer, quickly came, and took care of the snake...
Even though Mrs. Bigelow was the brunt of this action, she got over it quickly as she tried every way possible to ensure her daughter Lisa played the leading role. The problem was that there was someone better for that role and everybody knew and accepted it except this stage mother, who was vocal about favoritism for everybody except for her daughter. And, later, when the lights unexpectedly went out and Camille was pushed off the stage, it was natural to wonder if jealousy could have led this mother into such an act.
As the delightful activities regarding the production are enjoyed by the characters as well as the readers, one particular student who was dating Molly, the lead, had hoped that he would be chosen to play against her, but didn't get chosen. When he tried to argue with Molly and got physically and sexually aggressive, so much so that Gus had to get involved, he was questioned extensively about the other problems. Especially later when Molly did begin to date the student who had been selected as the male lead.
Even the school principal came under careful scrutiny until he talked to Gus and asked him to intervene on his behalf by sharing a secret from his past that would not be made public...
Because as the actions got progressively more dangerous, the police had been called in and now everything seemed to be under control, with protection provided for the opening night.  But nothing could have prepared them for what actually occurred!
What a climatic ending!
And what a wonderfully written and suspenseful novel! In addition to the great whodunit, we learn and grow to love the ongoing characters. Gus and Camille are getting closer and they share a beautiful miracle, amidst everything else happening...You've just got to admire Lazar. He writes a stirring family-oriented story, while setting up a terrific tale that keeps readers totally involved! I loved this one!
Review: First in Gus LeGarde Series A Winner!
Double Forte'
A Gus LeGarde Mystery
By Aaron Paul Lazar
When you get to do a marathon of books, it’s logical to start at the beginning of a series. Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the first Sam Moore Mystery, I next turned to Double Forte' which is the first in the Gus LeGarde series. I must confess that the title and the subsequent role that music plays in this series gave it some extra points for me.
In fact, Gus LeGarde is a college professor of music, so plan to find this beautiful addition to Lazar's books... We may not be able to hear the notes, but we can see how the music affects him and his family’s life, especially when Gus’ grandson cries, “I called and called, Opa, but you didn’t come. I call you and Mummy, dubbew fortay—he sobbed.” (p. 170)
Gus’ grandson knew that he should cry loudly when he couldn’t find anybody, based upon his ongoing lessons of music terminology...to me, that is soooo cool!
Double Forte': A Gus LeGarde MysteryAnyway...to the story... Gus has his daughter, son-in-law and Johnny living with him along with a special character, Siegfried, who is Gus’ brother-in-law and friend. Gus’ wife had died five years ago, although he still had strong loving feelings, missing her.
Gus and Siegfried were out skiing when they discovered a dog that had been caught in a trap. Both rushed to help her. Freddie, Gus’ daughter, was a vet, so Gus went to a nearby house to call her in advance to meet them at her clinic. While getting a very poor reception from the occupant, he was allowed to use the phone, but he also thought he heard and perhaps saw a child...
After getting the dog taken care of, Gus began to think and wonder about what he had possibly seen. It bothered him so much that he began to investigate and ultimately found a child that was held captive. Taking her when he left, he opened the gates to the anger of a mad man, her father, who had, they found, taken the child from her mother.
It was because of the child that Gus formally met Camille. Camille was Gus’ secretary’s daughter, who, playing matchmaker, was very anxious to have the two meet. But both had a background that had left much pain and despair and had not been helpful in that activity.
Still Gus, for the first time since his wife had died, realized that he was attracted to Camille...and then felt the guilt engulf him later...
Camille was a caseworker for children who needed an immediate safe home, so she was asked to take the rescued child; however, Sadie had latched on to Gus as her savior so he was called upon to spend time with her—and thus the relationship to Camille began to be closer.
The father was causing major problems, threatening Gus and his family. Camille was also in need of protection as she was unable to find a foster home and was keeping Sadie herself.
In the meantime, Freddie’s husband’s business partner was missing and then later found dead. And news was coming in that Sadie’s mother had apparently been murdered. Was there just one man out there killing whoever got in his way?
The great thing about Lazar's books is his storytelling and writing ability. He has created characters that you immediately want to know more--making the series ready for followers--and he spends time allowing you to see them at home, at work and within the family and within themselves! When Gus is still mourning his wife after five years, you know that if he is now looking toward Camille, it is going to be a delightful romantic story, especially when he learns of the abuse of Camille's first husband--and her secret!
No doubts in my mind...Double Forte' is great and the series is bound to get better! Especially, since I've already read the next book, which will be coming soon!
