Bad Things Happen...by Harry Dolan. Just What's Needed to Spend a Great Weekend Reading.....

I've been waiting for you to come by," said the man in the blue suit. "That was clever, leaving your name off. It sparked my interest." He tossed his hat onto his hat onto a filing cabinet. Loogan said nothing.
"Is this the same one again, or a new one?"
Looking down at the envelope in his lap, Loogan saide, "It's the same one. I've made some improvements."
"You ougjt to be careful. If it gets much better. I won't be able to publish it." The mjan took a seat at the desk. "The reason I've been waiting for you--I wanted to make you an offer. I want you to work for me."
This was unexpected. Loogan frowned. "I'm not really a writer."
"I don't need another writer. I've got writers scrabbling between the walls here, gnawing on the wiring. What I need if an editor."
Loogan shifted in his chair. "I don't think I'm qualified. I don't have the training."
"Nobody does," the man said.
"It's not like people go to school for it. No one sets out to be an editor. It's somethat that happens to you, like jaundice or falling down a well." He pointed at Loogan's emvelopes. "I like what you've done here," he said. "There's a clear improvement from one draft to the next. The question is, could you do the same thing with someone else's story?"
Loogan looked to the window, where the twilight was deepening. This isn't a problem, he thought, you can always refuse.
"I suppose I could," he heard hijself saying, "But I'm not looking for a job. I don't know how I feel about coming into an office every morning."
The man in the blue suit leaned back. "You won't have to come in. You can work from home. You won't have to follow a schedule. You'll only have to do one thing...

Bad Things Happen
By Harry Dolan

When I read The Last Dead Girl last year, I knew immediately I wanted to read more so I ordered the first two books in this series. Last weekend I wanted to sink into what I thought would be a great book and I was right! I've always enjoyed books that are set in the publishing area, so I was pleased to immediately read that our main character, David Loogan, had just been hired as an editor for a mystery magazine...

Of course, he never would have realized that he would soon become part of the greatest mystery he might ever have to wade through! He had never been taught to be an editor--he also had never been taught to solve a murder. Especially the murder of the man who had just hired him!

The shovel had to meet certain requirements.
A pointed blade. A short handle, to make it
maneuverable in a confined space. He finds
what he needs in the gardening section of
a vast department store.
He stows the shovel in his cart and moves
unhurriedly through the wide aisles, gathering
a few more items: D-cell batteries, a bag of
potting soil, a can of week-killer. Leather work
gloves, two pairs. In the grocery section he
picks up four deli sandwiches wrapped in
plastic and a case of bottled water.
~~~
David Loogan was not always David Loogan. He had legally changed his name after a violent incident from his past. When you meet him, however, you will wonder how that could be. He's calm, cool, collected and stays that way through most conversations.  I enjoyed the dialogue whenever he was involved!
The Washington Post called this book the best first novel of the year (2013) so just assume I've written some gracious witty words to describe the book--LOL! Better I tell you more about it, right?!
Grub Street sitting in for
"Gray Streets Magazine..."
So David is soon working with Tom, who is quite satisfied with his work as well as David. In fact, when he needed help, that was completely out of the business environment, Tom called David...
He needed him to help bury a body...
David was sent to get shovels and others things they would need.  Even that didn't go well, since the cashier decided she had seen him before and started a conversation. Fortunately he realized she was flirting...but not before he "sees himself stabbing the blade into the base of the cashier's neck..."
When David reached Tom's home, he had told him what had happened. At least the story he wanted him to believe. But when David caught him saying one thing, he questioned Tom and got a different story. It was only later that David found out that even that was a lie and so was the name of the individual they'd buried!
Interestingly, David had been having an affair with Tom's wife but had stopped contact when he had started working for him...Now, he was confronting her:
"Come sit with me David," she said. "I didn't come here to talk about editing...I think we should put these cushions on the floor, David..."
He said nothing. Her hand drew back. It went to the front of her blouse... David's face held no expression...Finally he said, "The thing is, I like him."
"Yes, it would have to be that," she said in a small voice. "I knew you liked him. If you didn't, it wouldn't have worked. If you hated him, I wouldn't have had anything to do with you. But he's your friend. And I should have known--David Loogan is an honorable man.
She sighed. "You and Tom, You're like that fable..."Androcles," she said. "Androcles and the lion...
"Am I Androcles in this scenario?"
"You're the lion and the lion is grateful. He's not going to attack Androcles, He's not going to let any harm come to Androcles...He's certainly not going to sleep with Androcles' wife..."
~~~

As the police would say, she was a person of interest. And David knew that he would do anything in his power to find out who had killed Tom...That meant talking to his former lover as well as all other employees at Gray Streets...

Including Tom's wife, there were four older employees who were now looking to keep the magazine going. They asked to meet with David and asked if he would step into the editor's position until they could determine what to do. Without thinking, David said he had thought they were going to ask him to investigate his death... But he then agreed to take the job for a time...

About that time, the police become very active in the investigation, so much so that the lead officer is constantly in conflict with David about staying out of it! Of course he doesn't, and they become attracted and fight off those feelings... At the end there is a date set up and I'm hoping that this police team reappear in the future...I enjoyed their interaction so much! I also enjoyed the three writers who were watching over the business now...not for liking them but for seeing them as being so appropriately created and seeing the potential of whether or not and which one, if any of them, could have done it...but, even though this sounds like a simple one central plot, it is not.  So plan on working to keep things straight in your mind...who is writing what, are they really writing what is published...or...

As David gets further and further into what could have caused Tom's murder, the mention of a manuscript suddenly starts flavoring his thinking,,, And then more are murdered, all of which are related in some way--but how!?? And how about a little blackmail to mix up the pot of confusion?!! And then there's the tag game for "who's got the correct USB drive--and which is more important--the original or the edited book?!
Tom had a plan..."He worked on it for a long time and he wanted it published. The plan didn't go the way he expected, but that wasn't his fault. A bad thing happened but when it was done, it was done. There was no reversing it...Whether Tom told the police or not, it couldn't made any difference...

She brought her palms up to rub the weariness from her eyes..."Bad things happen. Tom died, and then it was up to me to decide what to do. Maybe I should have told the police...maybe I should tell  them now. But none of that can make a bit of difference to Tom."

This is such an exciting book--a page turner that hooks you from the first page when Tom starts buying the shovel and other items to bury the body of a man...on through the interviews, discussions and possibilities of solving one murder, then another, and then another... A thriller, yes! But, you know, I wonder how many writers out there are "dying" to get published... A great weekend Read!

Wingless Flight by Adolfo Caso; Response by Moi...A Bit of Poetry to Brighten Your Day...

Wingless Flight

By Adolph Adolfo Caso

If you had wings
I could not teach you
How to fly,
Or teach you how to love-
Even if one is in love
And the other is not.
Birds soaring into the sky
On wings spread wide
Never reach heaven
No matter how hard they try.

Even eagles, soaring above,
Can only fly
Within the boundaries
Of a horizon
That is both fixed
And pre-determined.
But,
When two people fall in love,
Heaven
Mysteriously
Comes down to them,
And teaching them how to love
Continues to become
Useless and unnecessary,
Because,
Love
Cannot be taught
As a subject

Wingless flights--
Not possible to birds,
Always abound
Within two people
Who are really in love--
With one another!

My heart is like this stone-cold eagle
Trying to fly, but held to the earth
In flight, yet not finding the love that moves
A Heart frozen and bound...

Love Swans glide by expressingg
that for which they were destined
But was I destined to be alone...
Never feeling that love about which songs are sun?

I had always sang...

"When I fall in love it will be forever..."
Was it you or I that didn't want
that togetherness for eternity?

Or did I just move on ahead
"And Never fell in love at all..."
Still I find myself looking toward heaven
Finally realizing I'm looking in the wrong direction...

Forgive me Adolfo, I had to get a little fun out of all your loving...

Do You Believe? Loriel Has Many Adventures to Share with Children of All Ages! Enjoy This One!

Hello! I'm  Gabriele, a Wood Nymph... in the words surrounding
Book Readers Heaven.
When I decided to read this story for my fairy friends' children, I decided to use images that would be easy for children to easily come to recognize.  But when I started thinking about my review for Book Readers Heaven, who we all know has friends of all ages from all over the world, I asked if I could share some different pictures of my wood and water friends...and a few enemies that are part of the adventures!

I hope you enjoy yourself while visiting and let your children know about us!
We'd love to have them as friends too!

The Adventures of Loriel
  The Wood Fairy
By C. J. Walery

In the picture above, the young girl on the right is me! It's been around 500 years since I first came and decided to stay.  I met GrandFairy one time when she had her two granddaughters visiting. GrandFairy is the one in the middle about to drink! She's the oldest fairy living at this time. Her son is the King of Fairies and his daughter is Loriel a wood fairy. My other granddaughter is Lilly, a river fairy...We're visiting  Lilly, since we came with her when she left for home. Of course, when I heard about the adventures they had, I just had to hear about them!

"Well, we thought no one would ever
come?" a small voice said, and
Padra, the house mouse, bounded
up to her, pointed peered into
Loriel's face with his beady little
eyes. They were very nearly the
same size, but Padra was must
bigger around.
~~~
"Meanwhile, Anya was  happily
dive-bombing the top of her head.
Loriel was so relieved to see them
she couldn't keep the tears from
her eyes...
"Where is Grandfairy Cyce...?"
~~~

Of course, everybody was talking about how Loriel was a heroine, while she passes on the credit to Padra...... but I was quick to point out that it was Loriel who had first been concerned about not having seen the Grandfairy and had set out on a long journey for one so young. Her birthday had just occurred. At the age of 202, she was just an infant and had not even been trained yet like the older powerful fairies..

Before Long, she smelled the spicy scent of nasturtiums and knew she had found a safe spot. About the only natural enemy a nasturtium had was a black aphid, and they were too small to give Loriel much trouble.
~~~
Grandfairy Cyce came every spring to take Loriel back to spend the entire season with her, Padra and Anya, her pet hummingbird. But she had not come yet. There was no other choice, Loriel would travel alone back to the Woods but as the day went by, she knew she could not make it there that night! She was no longer afraid since she could hide within the flowers...And she even drank water from the leaves and ate the flower itself for breakfast! She was glad she had learned and remembered earlier lessons about the woods!
Soon she saw signs that helped her until she heard Padra! But Grandfairy Cice still didn't come to greet her...
Padra explained and even took me to where she was and allowed me to get a quick look at the one who held her captia mean goblin! He described what happened and even how she looked so frightened when he grabbed her! Loriel didn't care how frightened she was, though. They had to figure out how to get Grandfairy out!
Grandfairy Cyce had taught Loriel many fundamental spells and magical incantations, but best of all, she had taught her to communicate with her telepathically over short distances...
"Loriel," Grandfairy thought, "where are you."
Unfortunately Grandfairy could not help Loriel in suggesting any way to help her, but at least it helped to have talked a little...
And, of course, it is now time to stop so that you'll keep wondering how they are going to rescue Grandfairy from this scary goblin!
Balack!
And guess what? Even after  they succeed with that, there are more adventures to come! With only one hint for me to share... I don't mind telling you that I'd liked to hear more about the adventures Loriel has.  After all, one day she'll be queen and she will have gone through many experiences by that time!
The book is just 60 pages but packs great adventures within those pages... I enjoyed it very much and do hope this might be just the first in a series... It is very well written and suitable for reading to young children and still be of interest to some teens...and older individuals such as myself who enjoy fairy tales!
Highly recommended! Oh, and enjoy your evening with the sounds of our night fairies...
I have always been a reader and I loved reading to m,y children as well as my grandchildren. I hope that comes through in my writing. Opening children's eyes to the world of books is awesome. Seeing their eyes light up to an exciting passage is so special. Computers are wonderful but holding a book and relying on your own imagination is special and individual to each one of us.
Latest in Children's Series, If You Were Me and Lived in Russia By Carole P. Roman Great Cultural Experience for All Ages!
 If you were me and lived in Russia (rush-a) you would live in Northern Eurasia (Ur-ray-ja). You might call it the Russian Federation  because it has many different nationalities and ethnic groups living within its vast borders. Russia is famous for being cold, but it is so big that it has nine different time zones and a variety of climate from warm to cold.
Helping to Bring Peace Around the World!
If You Were Me and
 Lived in...Russia
A Child's Introduction
to Culture Around the World
By Carole P. Roman
You may have noticed from time to time that Book Readers Heaven is honored to have visitors quite often from Russia and the Ukraine... I was so please, therefore, to have an opportunity to read the latest addition to a wonderful Children's Series! Imagine how much it might affect world-wide peace if our children could learn and know about the children who live in other countries!
This time your children will have an opportunity to visit Moscow! How I wish I could visit it in reality, but this color-illustrated book certainly did a wonderful job on the major cultural points in this great country! In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a small flag from the country--quite beautiful! And speaking of beautiful, the art work is brilliantly bold with deep, dark colors that stand out to clearly delight all children. I was very impressed with the colors shown for the domes to be seen on many of the buildings. almost saying non-verbally, come see me! Here's a pic the author showed before the book was out...but I guarantee that the colors actually are bolder, brighter, simply fantastic!
You could live in the capital city Moscow (MOS-cow) and people would call you a "muscopvite" (mus-co-vite). It is the most populated city in Europe and fifth largest city in the world.
~~~

If you are a boy, your parents might have chosen to name you Ivan (ee-van)

 Maxim (Max-eem), or Alexander (a-lex-an-der).

If your parents needed a girl's name, they could have picked
Natalya (Nah-tal-ya)
Tatiana (tah-chee-ah-nah)
or Anya (Aan-yuh).

A shapka ushanka

Russian Children got coloring books for Olympics!
Children ready for another school brings flowers!
In addition to learning about the capital, popular names, and family information, readers also learn about clothing, money, food, games children play and more about primary important sites such as the Red Square... and so much more! Check out the special dolls available!

Red Square is the main market place and the site of state ceremonies and parades. It is very central to the city, and all major streets which connect to the highways originate there. You can also see both St. Basil's Cathedral and the Kremlin...

Do check these little gems out. Included in addition to information about the country is pronunciation help for what you will see there... And wait until you hear about Grandfather Frost! Highly Recommended! Enjoy!
